One on One
This is a delightful little modern silent film -- in the sense that it tells its story without the use of dialogue or even titles -- of a competition in basketball between two men -- each playing at a different time.
It's the jock against the brainbox and little more than an anecdote, but very natural and surprising in its humor. There is also a nice little musical score, whimsical in its nature, the theme played on the clarinet -- the woodwinds tending, as they do, to being the clowns of the orchestra. It will only take a couple of minutes of your time and will reward you immensely.

The Engineers: A Western New York Basketball Story
Book Description
“One person can make the difference and every person should try!”
Welcome. This is the official page for my writing project “The Engineers: A Western New York Basketball Story”. It has taken a while to compose my two-part story, but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel as they say.
Some peers may be surprised that I’ve taken the time and effort to craft this story. To be clear, it’s not something I’ve done out of vanity or self-indulgence. I personally did not go on to play big time college or professional basketball. As a writer however, I think it’s an important life story with several teachable lessons for everyone.
Regardless of how far you personally went in athletics, I think this story will touch you. Furthermore whether or not you’re into sports or have ever felt either the thrill or heartbreak of competition, the themes in this story will translate into life’s multiple arenas. At its core, The Engineers is a story about the human spirit, as the great Stephen King has said about some of his own works over the years. A lover of narrative stories myself, you’ll find that The Engineers reads like the 1980s television show The Wonder Years, or the classic movies Goodfellas and The Shawshank Redemption.
An Important Story To Tell
Hello all. Thank you for taking a look at this page. This was an important story for me to tell, and I can personally say that it helped guide me throughout my life. It absolutely guided into my science career and beyond. To find out more about the book and pieces I’ve already created related to this project, continue reading. This page will continue to evolve as the final stages of the books are completed. Feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions or comments. Finally, please share this page and check back for updates.
The Story
“It wasn’t about dumping the ball down to one person. It was like that but it wasn’t designed for that. He never said, ‘Get the ball. I want you to SHOOT! SHOOT! SHOOT!’ He’d say, ‘Move the ball and if you’re in that area, that’s your shot!’ It wasn’t a star system. ”
The late 1980s was an exciting time in the basketball world. Earlier in the decade, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird rescued the National Basketball Association (NBA) from the brink of extinction and ushered in its “Golden Age”. The top players in NCAA Men’s Division I college basketball stayed at their respective schools three to four years. Kids everywhere dreamt of playing the great game of basketball. For many, their dreams were ignited when Michael Jordan hit “the shot” against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1989 Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
In cities, small towns, municipalities, and villages all around the world, young boys everywhere dreamt of being “like Mike”, and the New York State High School Athletic Association’s “Section VI” was no different. Section VI which consisted of the city of Buffalo and its surrounding towns and counties teemed with boys dreaming about professionally playing the great game of basketball. Perhaps the most talented league in all Western New York was the City of Buffalo’s Yale Cup. Of all the leagues in Section VI, the 14-team inner city high school basketball conference was predominantly African American, underfunded, and had arguably seen its better days.
In the late 1980s, a special coach and a group of players gathered at the lone technical school in the Yale Cup, Hutchinson Central Technical High School, or Hutch-Tech for short. There they embarked on an unlikely ascent on the basketball court winning the Yale Cup and the Class B Sectional Championships during the 1990-91 season. They energized the school and caused other kids to dream of repeating and even surpassing their successes. Whether the subsequent classes could do it remained to be seen.
“The Engineers: A Western New York Basketball Story” is a two-part creative nonfiction life and basketball tale. It chronicles the basketball journey of author Dr. Anwar Dunbar, Coach Ken Jones, and the Hutch-Tech Boys’ Basketball Teams spanning from 1988 to 1995. It also captures the journeys of other players and teams from Section VI.
The story is based upon real life events and highlights the innocence of dreaming about playing the great game of basketball. It further visits experiencing life’s adversities when attempting to reproduce the successes of those who preceded you. In addition to holding keys to succeeding on the basketball court, this unique narrative journey also holds the keys to succeeding in life’s other arenas. Finally, It touches upon the consequences of coming of age as a boy with limited male mentoring and supervision, an important topic in today’s times.
“Use basketball to get your grades! Don’t use your grades to get your basketball!”
Part One: Innocent Basketball Dreams
“It is a long season, and all of our emotions will be tested over the three to four month journey that lay ahead!”
Part one of “The Engineers: A Western New York Basketball Story”, “Innocent Basketball Dreams” is a narrative story of a naïve teen who falls in love with the great game of basketball after seeing Michael Jordan hit the shot in the 1989 NBA playoffs. The teen sets out to play basketball and matriculates into Hutch-Tech High School. There in his freshman year, the boys’ varsity basketball team wins both the city and sectional titles before seemingly abruptly falling in the state regionals, just one game shy of the state final four in Glens Falls, NY.
Inspired by the 1990-91 Hutch-Tech Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team, a journey starts. Along with a host of other players at the school, the teen sets out to reproduce that magical season. Along this journey lessons are learned, not only about the game of basketball, but also about the game of life and navigating the world for years to come.
Part Two: Getting Into The Game Of Life
“You don’t just quit. You finish what you started!”
Part two of “The Engineers: A Western New York Basketball Story”, “Getting Into The Game Of Life” is the second part of a narrative story of a naïve teen who falls in love with the great game of basketball. After earning a roster spot on the 1991-92 Engineers as a sophomore, a second journey unfolds over the next two years where innocent basketball dreams take unexpected turns, and where life’s harsh realities are revealed. It is a story whose outcome is unlike anything imagined in part one.
Part two is a story about persevering through life’s hardships. This second part of the journey embodies a strong spiritual component revealing that our lives don’t always turn out how we plan them. It visits how the seeds for life’s eventual outcomes are often sewn early, and the importance of mentoring. The importance of leadership is also visited, and finally, the importance of chemistry among teammates and people in life’s many arenas. Lastly, it is a redemption story showing how victories can be found in life’s early disappointments, building blocks which can be turned into greater victories later.
*Note: These stories are based on real life events. The names have been changed for those individuals who were not interviewed, who were not in the newspapers, and who did not agree to be mentioned.
In Memory Of Coach Jones
“Your ATTITUDE Determines your ALTITUDE!”
“Success breeds confidence, and confidence breeds SUCCESS!”
“You have to be GOOD to be lucky, and lucky to be GOOD!”
“Basketball is our game and yours can be the same!”
“Be like a duck, calm on the surface but peddling like hell underneath!”
“Basketball is a game of fun. The better you become, the more fun it is!”
Dr. Kenneth Leon Jones, Head Coach, The Hutch-Tech Boys’ Basketball Team, 1988-1993
“When he took over the team, it was different. The things he had us doing, it was like in the movie Hoosiers!”
Videos dedicated to Coach Jones are below. I must acknowledge that this project would not have been possible without the contributions of the late Dr. Kenneth Leon Jones and his family. First. As I describe in my story, based upon my basketball talent level as a sophomore at Hutch-Tech High School, I truthfully don’t know that I would’ve played at any of the other Yale Cup schools, at least that season. I will always be thankful for my roster spot on the 1991-92 team as there were other kids in the school who were better than me in terms of talent. Thus, this story could’ve turned out completely differently. There could have been no story at all.
Second. Coach Jones was an integral piece of my research once we reconnected early in this century’s second decade. I needed pieces from others to tell this story the way that I wanted to tell it. It wasn’t just Coach’s stories and his vast knowledge of the great game of basketball though. It was also the extensive records that he kept of both the Section V (the Rochester area) and Section VI (the Buffalo area) high school basketball seasons in the form of his scrapbooks.
If you take the time to read my story, you’ll see that ours wasn’t an entirely smooth ride (see some of the background pieces below). It was like that for several other kids as well. It was however a very educational and life changing journey for me personally. Thank you again for everything Coach.
While I plan to generate promotional pieces for my two-part story here on Big Words Authors, I’ve already created pieces on my first blogging platform, The Big Words Blot Site. My interviews with notable Section VI basketball players and coaches from the early 1990s and essays related to the story are below and are hyperlinked. Simply click the links and you’ll be taken to them.

Sosnovka athletes play at Chelyabinsk basketball tournaments
Sosnovskaya Niva journalist found out which Chelyabinsk basketball courts can support Sosnovka teams.
BallGames Development League Tournament
Venue: Sports Hall of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf, Krasnoarmeiskaya Street, 140.
Team Dolgoderevenskoe secondary school
According to the organizers of the tournament, about 15-20 teams participate in the competition every year, including commercial, corporate, construction and sports teams.
The team of the Dolgoderevenskaya school under the guidance of coach Semyon Popov is one of the youngest in the tournament. Among the participants there are teams from the sports school of the Olympic reserve No. 8 and the sports school "Olimp", in which schoolchildren also play. But the main composition of the rest of the teams are students and already established athletes.
Dmitry Kozlov, Dolgoderevenskoye school team
– Pupils from grades 7 to 11 play for the Dolgoderevenskoye school, – says Semyon Popov. - We started training in September of this year and immediately decided to enter the city competitions. Of course, it is difficult for the guys to play with more experienced opponents - they are just getting to know this sport. But we will try and work.
“Last season, under my leadership, the Sosnovsky District U21 team played, which brought together the best young players of the Sosnovsky District under 21,” says Nikolai Kornilov. - We made our debut very well, beating strong and experienced men's teams. In the regular season, we managed to take sixth place out of 19 teams. And in the Development League Cup at the group stage, we suffered only one defeat in a match that already meant nothing to us from a tournament point of view. In the playoffs, we reached the final, where we lost in the end to a very experienced and large team "Impulse". As a result, already in the debut season, we became vice-champions of the Development League Cup. The result is more than excellent!
In the current season, Nikolai Alexandrovich decided to “rejuvenate” the Sosnovka team and showed up with players under 16 years old. At the same time, there is no need to talk about a lot of victories and medals. The main goal is to gain valuable experience by playing at a completely new level and prepare for district and regional starts for your age.
Game Sosnovsky district U16 against school Dolgoderevenskoye
As part of the team "Sosnovsky district U16" play Danil Abdrakhmanov , Rinat Vdovin , (p. Esaulsky).
Team Sosnovsky district U16
- Strong young players from our region are gathered here, who also take part in the championships of the Chelyabinsk region for the appropriate age, - explains Nikolai Kornilov. - The guys from Roschino and Esaulsky are pupils of Alexander Yukov and Kyazim Kazimov . Since the guys play mainly against men's teams, it was decided to strengthen with several 18-year-old players who, by their example, show how to act in difficult moments and give all the best in each episode.
– How long have you been training guys? What are your most significant achievements with this team?
- In fact, we are playing in this line-up for the first time. While we are only establishing interaction, we are trying to play as a team. It turns out so far with varying success, but we are progressing from match to match, and this cannot but rejoice. The main goal for the season is the victory in the rural Spartakiad of students of the Chelyabinsk region. Since 2018, the Sosnovsky district team has lost only one game in the framework of the Spartakiad. It happened last season in the final match. This season, we aim to return gold to the Sosnovsky region. Also, as part of the preparation, we will take part in various tournaments of the district and regional levels.
OldStars team Sosnovsky district
"OldStars" is a men's team, where the youngest player is 20 years old, and the most experienced is 35. Anton Grigoryev , Alexey Yeleshchin , Matvey Filatov (p. Mirny), Egor Vasiliev , Nikolai Kornilov , , Mikhail Galima, ollet0134 (Solnechny village), Kyazim Kyazimov , Dmitry Perov , Vyacheslav Spitsin (Esaulsky village), Sergey Rudenko (Dolgoderevenskoye village) and Denis Chernyshov (Chelyabinsk).
Initially Ivan Kochnev proposed the idea to assemble a team of guys from Sosnovka. He also came up with the first "working" name - "Solyanka", because the team brought together players from different settlements. The result was a "hodgepodge". But at some point, the guys decided to abandon this idea. The current name of the team is consonant with one well-known phrase from the world of sports "All Stars", which is translated from English as "All Stars".
- At one time, each player from the current roster was one of the leaders in his team, one might say, the star of the team. Therefore, the word "Stars" was well suited, - says Nikolai Kornilov about how the athletes came up with the name under which they are now performing. - We also changed “All” (“everyone”) to consonant with “Old” (“old / elderly”), since many have been playing for a long time and are a kind of “veterans” of Sosnovka basketball. It turned out to be an original and even funny name. It was a fusion of youth and experience.
Nikolai Kornilov (in red) participates in tournaments as a coach and player
- Your name is on the list of participants in the "Old Stars". How do you manage to combine the work of a coach and play yourself at the same time?
- Yes, in this team I act as a player-coach. This is probably the first time I've played this role. Therefore, now it is quite difficult to play and lead the team at the same time. After all, you need to understand in time when to replace players, when to change tactics, to evaluate the actions of an opponent from the outside. As a result, so far it turns out that on the court I don’t quite show myself as I should, and the team game periodically suffers due to untimely decisions. Therefore, we are still on the way of becoming together - besides, we are playing in such a composition for the first time.
In our conversation, Nikolai Kornilov did not forget to mention his fellow countrymen from Dolgoderevensky, whom we wrote about above.
- It turns out that our district is represented by as many as three teams, which is a record for both rural teams and, in principle, for teams from territories not from Chelyabinsk, - Nikolai Alexandrovich emphasizes. - This indicates the great popularity of basketball in the Sosnovsky district. In addition, Oleg Kapanets from the village of Roshchino plays in the ChMZ team. Nikita Kapanets from Sosnovka U16 is his son, as well as one of the leaders of the Youth Sports School team, which takes part in the open championship of Chelyabinsk among youths. What a great succession!
Tournament "Open Championship of the city of Chelyabinsk among men's teams"
Venue: sports halls of short track, UralGUFK, as well as the House of Pioneers and Schoolchildren named after Krupskaya.
Participants: team "Legend" p. Dolgoderevenskoye.
One of the Legends matches p. Dolgoderevenskoye (in blue uniform)
10 teams in the first and 15 teams in the second group take part in the tournament. Sosnovskaya "Legend" got into the second.
- The team "Legend" has been participating in the tournaments of the regional basketball federation since 2015, - says team captain Semyon Popov. - Many times became the winners of the Sosnovsky district championship. In April of this year, they won silver in the regional basketball tournament. (Chelyabinsk).
Tournament "Chelyabinsk Open Children's Championship "Konar Cup"
Venue: Olympic Reserve Sports School No. 8, Volodarsky Street, 14a.
Participants: boys "Kremenkul secondary school-2012", boys "Kremenkul secondary school-2013", girls "Kremenkul secondary school-2008", girls "Kremenkul secondary school-2013", boys "Dolgoderevenskoe-2010", girls "Red field- 2011, Lokomotiv 2006-2008 boys, Lokomotiv 2010-2012 boys, Lokomotiv 2011-2013 boys, Roshchino-2013, Youth Sports School Sosnovsky district.
The first game of Lokomotiv 2011-13 against Olympus
Tournament organizers report that this season the maximum number of teams in the history of the competition has been announced - 80 teams, of which 37 are regional. Participants are divided into nine groups: five groups for boys and four for girls. In total, the Conar Cup will host about 200 games. The competition will last until December 30th.
With the teams of the Dolgoderevenskaya and Kremenkul schools, which perform under the leadership of Semyon Popov and Alexander Teplyakov , we already know each other well, thanks to their success last season. The team of the Youth Sports School of the Sosnovsky District plays under the leadership of Nikolai Kornilov, with whom we have already talked in detail in the first part of the material. Let's get acquainted with the newcomers of this season - the teams of the Krasnopol and Poletaev schools.
Krasnoe Pole-2011 Team
The girls' team of the Krasnoye Pole School was registered in the age group 2011-2012 year of birth.
- We have six teams as rivals, - says coach Vladimir Dzina . - Of these, three teams of future professionals - the "Palace of Pioneers", the sports school of the Olympic reserve No. 8 and "Cats" from the same sports school. The other three teams are represented by school sports clubs - Pchelki Kunashak, Pervomaisky and the team of the educational center No. 2 in Chelyabinsk.
Alina Zyryanova , Polina Komar , Olga Zhuravleva , Maria Sherstobitova and captain Lilia Nigamatyanova Alina Zyryanova 0134 . Vladimir Yurievich notes that the girls, with the exception of the team captain, have been training for less than a year. They have little gaming experience, but a great desire to participate in serious competitions.
For the first time, Krasnopolie players tried their hand at the 3x3 Orange Ball Championship of the Chelyabinsk Region Basketball Federation in August 2021.
- Of the eight teams in our group, we took only eighth place, - says the coach. Disappointed, silent girls left the playground one by one. And the next day at eight o'clock in the morning everyone was already in the hall. Lots, lots of work. Over mistakes, over technique, over physical form, over tactics.
Vladimir and Daria Dzina
Vladimir Dzina has been coaching the basketball team for the second year.
- By education I am an officer and a military engineer for the repair and operation of automotive equipment, - says Vladimir Yuryevich. - I was accepted to the Krasnopol school without any problems - education allowed. Retraining, thanks to a well-coordinated school team, went quickly and successfully. The sports hall at the school is small, it is as long as a real basketball field in width. Because of what, the girls, leaving the large field, were lost. But difficulties only harden us. We circumvent this problem by agreeing on games in other schools in the Sosnovsky district and Chelyabinsk.
Daria Dzina (second from right) plays in the Russian Championship of the Student Basketball Association for the team "Gvardiya" of the Tyumen Industrial University
His daughter Daria , who began to get involved in basketball, played a big role in the development of Vladimir Yuryevich as a coach.
- In general, I started training athletes in 1992, and even a little earlier - from the army, - continues Vladimir Dzina. - Army experience has shown that with the right approach, an athlete can be made from any healthy person, of course, motivation is needed for both you and him. Perhaps he will not become an Olympic champion, but he will definitely become much better than himself today. Throughout the path of an athlete, there is a constant struggle, first of all, with oneself, one’s laziness, one’s complexes, one’s shortcomings, and insecurity. As for basketball, we can say that I got there by accident. At that time, I was engaged in putting athletes on their feet who, after severe injuries and operations, came to my gym on crutches, and my task was not just to teach them to walk again, but to teach them to run faster than before the injury. One of the athletes said that his son, playing basketball at the age of 10, trains for three months on the beaches in Turkey. Oddly enough, I wanted the same for my daughter.
Daria easily passed the physical training tests at the Olympic Training School No. 8 in Chelyabinsk (which, by the way, is now being played against by Krasnoe Pole). The girl was included in the team, but she did not get to Turkey, as well as to the training camp in the Crimea and Sochi. The political situation in the world has changed. As a result - fees in Kashtak.
- Daughter started playing basketball while sitting on the bench. I had to change teams. We moved to the Palace of Pioneers named after Krupskaya. They began to let them play for 3 minutes out of 40. Why am I telling this? To the fact that you can not despair and give up. You can't stop. In addition to basic training, they hired a personal basketball coach, which was inexpensive, due to the fact that I put him and his father on their feet after severe knee injuries, and my son three times. And I watched again, memorized, studied. How to and how not to. Intensity and intelligence in everything. All different. This is me about the girls of the current team. Tall and short, powerful and fragile, kind and aggressive, the ability to use each in the right place, based on its abilities and capabilities. Not breaking them, not changing them, but helping them. To make their eyes burn with a flame, to cultivate restraint to the provocations and rudeness of rivals, developing their best qualities, achieving solidarity and friendship, confidence in each other. Understanding that your mistake will be noticed, understood, forgiven and helped to fix everything, if, like the whole team, you give everything 100%. So, developing and raising my own daughter, I became the coach of the Red Field basketball team.
Darya Dzina, a 10th grade student of the Krasnopol school, is playing in the Russian Championship of the Student Basketball Association for the Guards team of the Tyumen Industrial University.
Among the successes of the Krasnopilska basketball players, two first places in volleyball among the senior and secondary teams of girls from schools in the Sosnovsky district in 2021–2022 can be noted. Vladimir Yuryevich called it a "side effect" of basketball training, where girls develop jumping ability.
- I would also like to add one rather important point, - says Vladimir Dzina at the end of the conversation. - There would be no Red Field team without the participation of parents who are interested in the success of their children, without the school administration, which, realizing that it cannot change the size of the hall, but will not stand aside, will provide us with time for training, balls of a high competitive level, will provide us with uniforms and, if possible, transport. In addition, the Sosnovsky District Administration has now found and allocated funds for the repair of the school gym and the purchase of new equipment. Many thanks to all these people who help to develop our children.
Members of the Lokomotiv Poletaev School team
