Regulation

In the NBA, teams play four 12-minute quarters en route to a 48-minute regulation game. In college basketball, teams play two 20-minute halves and 40 minutes total, differing from the professional game. In both cases, if the two teams are tied at the end of regulation overtime is played in order to decide a winner.

Overtime

Overtime in basketball happens when the score is tied at the end of regulation. Overtime is used to determine the winning team when the score is tied. Overtime always begins with the ball being put into play via a jump ball. If the two teams are tied after overtime then they play second overtime with the same rules and regulations. This continues until a winner is decided.

How Long Does Overtime Last?

Overtime is an extra period in both the NBA and NCAA. Each overtime period is five minutes long and the team that finishes the period with the lead is the winner of the game.

Overtime Jump Ball

At the start of overtime, a jump ball is used to put the ball into play. All jump balls take place at the center circle. The same procedure is used for this jump ball as is in regulation. A player from each opponent takes the jump ball by jumping into the air and trying to tip it to one of their teammates. Players are not allowed to grab a hold of the ball. Instead, they must tip the ball in the direction of a teammate using one hand. Jump balls are used in overtime in order to give both teams an equal chance at possession just as in regulation.

Additional overtime quarters are played if the score is tied at the end of the first overtime quarter. There is no limit on the number of overtime periods that can be played as a winner is always determined in basketball. There is no sudden-death method of determining the winning team like in other sports.

Timeouts

A timeout is the ability to stop the game clock and shot clock from ticking. Some reasons to call a timeout in basketball are for making substitutions, to ice a player, or to change the play design.

In each NBA Overtime period, both teams are given two 60-second timeouts. College teams, on the other hand, are only given one timeout. Timeouts that were not used in regulation do not roll over into overtime and this is the same from overtime period to overtime period.

Bonus

The bonus is a type of penalty situation in basketball that is given to a team when they are fouled a certain number of times during a period. In NBA overtime, if a team is fouled a total of five or more times they are in the bonus. Teams in the bonus get two free throws every time a player is fouled. In college basketball, a team’s foul count in the second half will carry over to overtime. For example, if a team has been fouled eight times going into overtime, they will be in the single bonus at the beginning of the overtime period.

FAQ

How many overtimes can a basketball game have?

In theory, a basketball game can have an infinite number of overtime periods. In both the NBA and college basketball, games cannot end in a tie. Therefore, teams will continue to play overtime periods until a winner is determined. One NBA game played in 1951 went into an NBA record six overtime periods. In the NCAA, a game between Bradley and Cincinnati went into a record seven overtime periods.

How long is college basketball overtime?

NCAA college basketball features a five-minute overtime period in the event of a tie. This is the same as the overtime period found in the NBA.

What is the record for the most overtimes in college basketball?

The record for the most overtime periods in one NCAA basketball game is seven. This record is shared between three games: Bradley vs Cincinnati (1981), Black Hills vs Yankton (1956), and Skidmore vs South Vermont (2010). These seven overtime periods equate to an additional 35 minutes of game time, which is just five minutes shy of a regulation game.

Overtime Rules in Basketball Explained (NBA, NCAA, FIBA)

Overtime is one of the most thrilling parts of any sport. It takes games to the next level and allows for extremely exciting matchups. However, it can also be confusing. In order to fully appreciate the extra minutes, you have to know the rules and how they all fit together.

I have watched and played basketball for more than twenty-five years. My own experience, mixed with my secondhand accounts and additional reading, has taught me about how the NBA, as well as other major leagues, operate once regular time expires.

Here, I will cover the overtime rules for every premier (and less than premier) in the world by going over how each one handles extra minutes, how overtime differs between different organizations, and why each one has the specific rules that they do.

Keep reading the below sections to learn more.

Quick Navigation

Done, but Not Over

Creating rules for overtime is not a simple process, especially because everyone does it a little differently. It is those subtle differences that are important.

Though most leagues have similar overtimes from a conceptual standpoint, they all put their own spin on it that’s important to note when watching or enjoying a game. Missing a key rule or critical piece can lead to confusion, which can then lead to viewing problems down the line.

1. NBA Overtime Rules

The NBA is the largest basketball organization on Earth, which is why its overtime is the basis for the other main leagues. First and foremost, overtime only occurs when two teams are tied at the end of regulation. If that happens, both go into a standard five-minute overtime period.

For all intents and purposes, those five minutes are treated like any other quarter when it comes to scoring and rules. Two points are two points, three points are three points, and any fouls carry over from regulation.

If you have five in the first four quarters, you can only get one in overtime before you foul out.

Overtime also utilizes a quarter-possession rule, starts with a tip-off, and each team gets two team timeouts for the period regardless of how many they used during regular time. If the score is still tied when overtime ends, the teams go into another five-minute quarter.

NBA games cannot end in a tie. As such, both teams will keep playing until one ends up with more points than the other. Six overtimes is the most on record, but a game could theoretically have even more.

It’s also worth noting that the WNBA, like its male counterpart, is a league that utilizes five-minute overtime periods with the same rules of regulation. The game cannot end in a tie, which means they keep going until someone comes out on top.

2. NCAA Overtime Rules

As mentioned, the NBA is the baseline for most overtime rules. That is why the NCAA is almost identical to the larger league when it comes to extra play. Teams have a tip-off to start, and then a five-minute long period to see who can come out with the victory.

As you might imagine, if teams are still tied during the end of the first overtime, there is a second one. That keeps going and going until somebody permanently gets the upper hand.

That being said, there is one major difference between NBA and NCAA overtime rules that makes college a little different. Where NBA teams get two team timeouts to use in extra minutes, college teams get one 75-second timeout as well as any they didn’t use in regulation.

That’s quite a big deal because it means there’s a bit more strategy in terms of using (or not using) timeouts at the end of the tight game. Most teams use them all, but there’s something to be said of getting them to roll over and have an advantage when regular time runs out.

When looking at all leagues, it’s also worth mentioning below-pro level. Any level that’s under collegiate, rather than going with a five-minute overtime period, uses half the length of a standard quarter.

For instance, in high school varsity, which has eight-minute quarters, overtime lasts four minutes. All of the other rules are the same as the NBA.

3. FIBA Overtime Rules

Basketball is an American sport, but FIBA does mostly follow along with the NBA when it comes to rules. The biggest difference between the leagues is that FIBA has a 40-minute regulation, where an NBA game runs 48 minutes long.

That allows for more comebacks and more overtimes. Even so, despite that difference, FIBA uses the same rules as the NBA when it comes to extra minutes. Though their quarters are two minutes shorter (10 vs 12) they still have a single five-minute period for each overtime session.

The game cannot end in a tie. Teams just keep going and going until one wins. Fouls also carry over and the timeouts reset at the start of overtime to comply with the regular rules.

However, it’s important to note the Euroleague does have a rule for two-legged ties. In that, if two teams play a double header, there’s no overtime if the first game ends with the same score.

Rather, the total points from both games is taken into account. Whoever has the larger aggregate score gets the win.

Final Words

Every basketball league utilizes overtime in some way. For smaller or less-professional leagues, it’s a shorter period based on quarter length. For everyone else, it’s five minutes again and again until somebody gets crowned the eventual winner.

It’s not terribly difficult to understand, but for those who aren’t familiar with the game or its rules, it can be confusing. Keeping everything straight makes for a better, and cleaner, spectating experience.

Teenagers make money playing high school basketball

Bryson Warren is probably one of the few teenagers you'll meet whose high school job brings in a guaranteed six-figure income.

17-year-old Warren is among the first high school athletes to join Overtime Elite, a New York-based company that recruits and pays some of the world's top high school and teen basketball players to play at its club. academy in Atlanta.

Overtime athletes attend classes and prepare for graduation. They compete against each other and other high school basketball teams from across the country. They also offer a base annual salary of at least $100,000 for each student-athlete, with on-court performance bonuses potentially pushing that figure up to $1 million.

For Warren, who grew up near Little Rock, Arkansas and was ranked by ESPN as the 14th best high school basketball player in the US in his age group, the attraction was clear. He and 26 other student-athletes in Overtime jump at a rare opportunity to make big money as high school athletes while they work to make an even bigger leap in the NBA.

“Not many 17-, 18-, 19-year-olds can say they made at least $100,000,” Warren told CNBC Make It. "We just get a head start in life just by playing the game we love."

What is overtime elite?

Overtime, founded in 2016 by Dan Porter and Zach Weiner, a pair of WMA talent agency alumni, is an experiment in both sports and entertainment.

The league, which started its first competitive season last year, is streaming games live and sharing the best player moments to Overtime's millions of followers on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. According to Overtime, content created featuring teen athletes like Warren is viewed more than 18 billion times a year online.

Overtime has also raised over $100 million from investors including Jeff Bezos' investment firm, rapper Drake, a host of NBA stars including Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony, and Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.

The league declined to share revenue information with CNBC Make It, but noted that the company also makes money from streaming content, merchandise sales and sponsors, including State Farm, Gatorade and Topps card company.

Aaron Ryan, the company's president and commissioner and former NBA marketing director, says the league is reinvesting some of that money in its players.

“We primarily cover food, lodging, transportation, and all costs associated with participating in the program,” he says. “But also a bonus for performance, as well as capital in our company, which is commensurate with what every other employee receives in overtime.”

Ryan says the league is also offering each player $100,000 in college tuition if they decide not to play sports as a full-time career. The scholarship is purely academic in nature: overtime players are ineligible to play college basketball as their salary makes them "professional" athletes.

That's why Overtime also spent money on a basketball operations team led by former Sacramento Kings assistant general manager Brandon Williams that could compete with most major college programs. The coaching staff is led by former NBA player and University of Connecticut coach Kevin Ollie and includes former NBA player Ryan Gomez and former University of Virginia coach David Leitao.

These names help Overtime attract top teens from around the world: According to The Athletic, Overtime's current roster of 27 players includes at least eight athletes who were previously five-star college recruits.

Warren was one such recruit. Signing with Overtime meant turning down offers from sports programs like Kansas, Maryland, Auburn, Georgetown, and Oklahoma.

"Almost every sentence you can think of," he says with a smile.

A Day in the Life of a Pro High School Athlete

Warren spends most of his time at the 100,000-square-foot Overtime facility in Atlanta, which is an all-in-one arena, training facility, dormitory and boarding school.

Nearly every morning at 6:15 am, he is picked up by an overtime sports coach to spend about 90 minutes in the gym before going to a three-hour basketball practice on the court with his teammates. After lunch, according to Warren, players head to the Overtime classes until around 4:00 pm.

Overtime Academy is an accredited institution with certified educators that allows student athletes to earn a high school diploma rather than a GED and begin college courses. Warren says it's a typical school curriculum that includes "mathematics, English, science or biology with social studies. " [and] history".

Warren says he particularly enjoys "financial literacy" classes, which teach student athletes the finer points of signing professional contracts, questions to ask agents and consultants, and how to practice responsible spending.

“They teach us who to have in our circle [of friends and family] and all that, just to keep your circle small,” says Warren. [Six-time NBA All-Star] Tony Parker came and talked to us. [and] he told us that it's not about who you say "Yes" to, but who you say "No" to.

After class, student athletes usually either go back to the gym or to the basketball court for some more practice, “and then the rest of the day is up to you,” says Warren.

Chasing His NBA Dream

Without overtime, Warren would be currently completing his junior year of high school and likely receiving intense recruiting offers from established college basketball programs. But if Warren feels like he's missing something by choosing overtime over college, he doesn't show it.

Right now, he says, he's focused on getting into the NBA. His high scores on rating sites such as ESPN indicate that he has a good chance of getting there. “My goal when the program ends is definitely to get drafted. [in the NBA] he says. "It's a common goal."

Warren also says he dreams of using his basketball success to positively impact his community. He says he respects LeBron James for what James has done off the court, including opening a public elementary school in James' hometown of Akron, Ohio, where students have a chance to earn free tuition at the University of Akron.

“Not everyone does it, but he is willing to give and open a school for free,” says Warren.

Warren is already contributing part of his overtime salary to the local co-ed AAU basketball team in his Arkansas hometown, helping to support children in 2nd through 6th grade. Still, he said, he couldn't resist at least one flashy purchase with his newfound income, something he's always dreamed of owning a Dodge Charger.

“It really came true. So I was just blessed that it happened,” he says.

Warren says he understands that such an unconventional path in pursuit of a lifelong dream can be incredibly risky. There's no guarantee that overtime will give him a better chance of impressing NBA scouts than playing in college or in the emerging NBA G-League.

“You can see overtime as a risk, or you can see it as an opportunity,” he says. "This is the opportunity I chose and this is what I'm going to live with and now I'm at peace."
