Barney Stinson: [to Nick about Robin] I love everything about her, and I'm not a guy who says that lightly, I'm a guy who has faked love his entire life, I'm a guy who thought love was just something idiots felt, but this woman has a hold on my heart that I could not break if I wanted to. And there have been times when I wanted to. It has been overwhelming and humbling, and even painful at times, but I could not stop loving her any more than I could stop breathing. I'm hopelessly, irretrievably in love with her. More than she knows.

What didn't you know about How I Met Your Mother? Season 8.

    - Pro-KMS

But first I want to warn you that there will be spoilers. So, if you have not seen the 8th and 9th seasons, you better refrain from reading the article.

    Episode 1

When Barney tells Quinn the story of his relationship with Robin, he makes two mistakes. He says that Robin went to Brazil, although she went to Argentina, and that Teda was hit by a bus - in fact, it was Barney himself who was hit by a bus. Apparently after that he had a bad memory.

    Episode 2

In the fifth episode of the sixth season, Ted, Barney, Marshall and Max, who was Robin's boyfriend at the time, were discussing all sorts of weird things about sex in the locker room. Both Barney and Ted hinted that Robin loves something very unusual in bed. And Marshall was still trying to find out from them what she likes to do. In this episode, we learn that Robin looks at herself on the news during sex and even winks at herself.

    3rd episode

When Barney tries to pick up a girl in a bar dressed up as a cop, a sign with his name can be seen saying Longwood. Loosely translated, this means "long length" or "long tree". This is a kind of hint at the size of Barney's dignity.

    Episode 6

Ted's basketball jersey matches the colors of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who play in Ted's home state of Ohio.

When Lily is attacked by another bout of "wanting", she imagines together Robin, Nick and an international student named Nadya. Alyson Hannigan starred in the movie "American Pie", and there was just such a character - Nadia, played by Shannon Elizabeth.

    Episode 8

In one of the flashbacks, Lily whistles a tune as she walks down the street, causing all the street kids to run away. This is a reference to The Wire and the character Omar Little. He also whistled intimidatingly.

    Episode 10

A toy with a handprint can be seen in Barney's Christmas decoration box. Perhaps this is a reference to the movie Cast Away with Tom Hanks. Wilson looked exactly the same there - the ball and part-time, the best friend of the protagonist.

And Barney's Christmas tree has ties instead of decorations.

    Episode 15

Abby Elliott, who plays Jeanette, is Chris Elliott's daughter in real life. And he, as you know, played Mickey Aldrin, Lily's father.

    Episode 16

When Robin and Lily are shown in the future, Robin's left hand is deliberately hidden to hide the fact that her ring finger is missing a wedding ring. The fact is that Robin and Barney in the last episode 9th season will get divorced. No, but what, I warned that there would be spoilers.

    Episode 18

Barney, teaching Ted how to shoot girls, tells him through the earpiece what to say. And this couple has code names. Barney is Iceman and Ted is Neruda. Iceman is a reference to Val Kilmer's character in the 1986 movie Top Gun or Top Gun. In the film, Kilmer's character had the same call sign. And Neruda is Ted Mosby's favorite poet, Pablo Neruda. Ted talked about this in the fourth season.

    Episode 20

The cocktail named after Robin consists of coconut rum, peach schnapps, vanilla vodka, strawberry cream liqueur, cranberry juice, sugar and maraschino cherries. Now you know which drink will be the main one on the New Year's table.

    Episode 23

While playing laser tag, references to the 1994 movie Leon can be seen. The first reference was shown in the scene where Barney gives parting words to his fighters. And one of them asks: “What does the laser tag have to do with it?”, And Barney replies: “With everything!” This is a reference to Gary Oldman's character, who similarly yelled at a colleague. The second reference is noticeable in the scene when Barney is dangling from his weapon, hanging from the crossbar upside down.

Leon himself did the same in the film of the same name.

When Ted comes to help Marshall and Lily with packing, he says, “I came here to chew gum and collect boxes, so I almost chewed the gum ...” He refers to the movie “Strangers Among Us”, where the character Roddy Pipera says: "I came to chew gum and kick ass, and I ran out of gum." Then he kicks the asses of the aliens. And by the way, Roddy Piper is a Canadian wrestler. Well, you understand, Robin is from Canada. Solid parallels!

That's it with the eighth season.

how i met your mother barney stinson

Denzel Washington is the favorite actor of all basketball players. We weave his filmography into the mythology of the NBA

, "Parks and Recreation" , "How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days" and Jack Nicholson's .

It is known that Denzel Washington is loved by more or less all current and former NBA basketball players, especially African Americans, who are still the vast majority in the league. No matter who you ask about your favorite actor, almost everyone will name Washington. This is probably due to the fact that Denzel, being an incredible actor, created many memorable and inspiring images during his career, while always remaining understandable and "his".

Last but not least, this sense of Washington's closeness to the basketball community was influenced by Denzel's youth, which was most directly associated with basketball. He played very decently and for quite some time at Fordham University under the guidance of the notorious PJ Carlissimo, who later said that Denzel was significantly better than about 95% of students in the mid-1970s and could well play in the NBA. Especially, as I understand it, his defensive skills were highly regarded, which he later demonstrated in the famous episode of the film “His Game”, worthily shoving his elbows under the ribs of a young Ray Allen.

Somehow I ran too far ahead, I need a few more general words. Denzel did not go down in history as one of hundreds of unremarkable NBA players, but he managed to become the best African-American actor of all time and one of the most iconic actors of the last thirty years in general.

He played a great many roles during his career, many of his characters became folklore, so the text about the connection between his heroes and the NBA world was only a matter of time. After of 's legendary encounter with the Miami players during the past playoffs and pep talk, in which Washington seemed to be simultaneously a preacher and the coach's own character from Remember the Titans, many began to ask questions. Like, perhaps it was Denzel who influenced the fact that Miami beat Atlanta so easily in the first round, and in general, it would not be better for him to become the head coach of Philadelphia.

What will the text be about? Approximately about the same as the one in which we are with Vasily R. compared NBA players to characters in the Harry Potter universe. Clearly, this is not a list of the best films in Washington's career, but a list of those to which basketball analogies fit more than others. For example, I really like the pictures (the cloth word of film critics from the 1960s, only these are really pictures) “Gangster” and “Anger”, but basketball here would have to be pulled by the ears, which I would not want to do. Although it was impossible to do without it at all, well, such is the fate of the author who is trying to combine the incompatible.

I'll start with the most obvious.

The Great Equalizer (2014) - Definitely Michael Jordan and his famous NBA comeback storyline.

A film about a sense of duty and justice. God made people equal, Colonel Colt made them equal, and former CIA agent Robert McCall, played by Denzel Washington, made them even more equal. After the death of a close relative and, apparently, the dearest person in the world, he promised never to return to the dangerous old business. I decided to do the same thing that the same deceased loved one did - read 100 books before dying. In the case of Jordan, it is to make a career in basketball. Of course, it is impossible to calmly contemplate the imperfection of the universe for a long time. Sooner or later, the eyes will become bloodshot, the hands will remember the old inhuman tricks, around, as before, mountains of corpses of defeated enemies are formed.

"The Great Equalizer-2" (2019) - of course, also Jordan , only during the second return to basketball, already in Washington. Everyone was happy about the third coming of Michael and the continuation of the story with Denzel Washington, but at the same time, the feeling that all this was somehow no longer very necessary and irrelevant did not leave. The feeling did not disappoint, the second part of the film turned out to be much worse than the first, as well as the second return of Jordan, which, as you know very well, cannot be put on a par with the first.

The Great Equalizer 3 (2023) - Michael Jordan during a future match against Lavar Ball, which will be held specifically as part of the film's promotional tour. Yes, there is a strong belief that the third part will be just that terrible, because the story of Robert McCall seems to be completely exhausted. Why these sequels are needed for Denzel, who usually does not star in franchises, is not clear. It might be better for the movie not to be released at all.

Philadelphia (1993) - Isaiah Thomas and his Magic Kiss

Washington plays a lawyer who was originally homophobic, but eventually became the defender of the hero Tom Hanks, who contracted AIDS. About the same with Isaiah, who has always been (and remains) an unpleasant character, he was accused of being the one who began to spread information about Magik's HIV status. But then he greeted him before the All-Star Game, and a little later he almost strangled him in a brotherly embrace. It was a moment of pure cinematic pathos, how can one not remember such a thing.

The Magnificent Seven (2016) – Cleveland -era LeBron James, who wants to avenge previous humiliations in his hometown and assembles a super-team

The crowning achievement of a collection of comparisons. The questions of good and evil are slightly confused, but it happens. LeBron James, played by Denzel Washington, agrees to help a city in trouble. The only capable person in this lost and strikingly Cleveland-like city is Kyrie Irving (in the film, he was beautifully played by actress Hyley Benett, who is known for being very easily mistaken for Jennifer Lawrence). It was Hiley who took the decisive shot at the main villain - like the real Irving in the 2016 final.

Bennet-Irving's help alone was impossible, the enemy was too strong. LeBron-Denzel had gained confidence and wisdom over years of fighting, so he started calling old Civil War/Finals allies from " San Antonio " . The main friend and support was Ethan Hawke, a sniper familiar from old films. You know him by the name of NBA player James Jones. Kevin Love is the obvious Chris Pratt, a star who knows how to work for a team and, if necessary, die for a victory. The resemblance is striking - the same path from a cheerful fat man to an athlete-hero, friendship with the tree Groot ( Westbrook ), gradual loss of superstar status.

But even this is not the main thing. The important thing is that in building his own greatness, LeBron constantly replicates the career paths of past legends. I think there is no point in reminding that The Magnificent Seven is not exactly an original film, but a remake. And the remake is also not quite the original film. This is how life imitates art.

"Uncontrollable" (2010) - current Chris Paul , who took under the wing of a young and romantic partner Devin Booker

The classic duo of a retired veteran who has seen his life and his young partner, who thinks a lot about how to win the favor of his beloved again. Denzel seems to be as cool as can be for the entire movie, but at the crucial moment, he fails to jump into the driver's car, jeopardizing the entire operation. Perhaps such problems would not have been if he had been a little younger and healthier. Reminds no one? The situation was saved by Chris Pine, who, despite a leg injury, was still able to prove himself in a clutch from the best side, saved people and won the favor of his passion. There is hope that Pine played Devin Booker from the future, who, for the basketball feat, apparently needs to break up with Jenner again and win the final in order to resume relations.

Dangerous Passengers on Train 123 (2009) - any member of the NBA Survey Headquarters in Secaucus, NJ

Here Denzel Washington is a tough guy again, of course, but tough at a distance because he works as a dispatcher. Like those people who advise NBA referees on controversial issues, sitting at the headquarters in front of huge monitors.

"His game" (1998) - Wes Matthews , two-time NBA champion with the Lakers, father of quarterback Wesley Matthews (last year played with Milwaukee, now temporarily out of the team)

One of the most famous films in history was hard to miss. Denzel Washington plays the father of Jesus Shuttlesworth, known to the world as Ray Allen. They have a very complicated relationship, I won’t go into the ups and downs, the story is well known. In the end, they seem to come to reconciliation. The same was true for Matthews. The NBA champion almost did not take part in the fate of his son, who was raised by a single mother. They managed to get close already during the game of Matthews Jr. in the NBA, especially his father was touched after his son moved to the Lakers a few years ago.

A little more about the film. It best manifested Denzel's basketball talent (the same scene was already at the beginning of the text). Spike Lee said on Bill Simmons' podcast that the famous one-on-one scene originally had Ray Allen's hero beat Denzel's hero 12-0. But at the same time, Spike was well aware that Washington would never leave the site if he didn’t score through Ray at least once. As a result, the match ended 11-5.

The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) Carmelo Anthony from the time of the famous MeloDrama.

There is an opinion (mine, for example) that this is the best film in Denzel's career. Even without that, he has always been considered a fairly versatile actor, but here he successfully managed to get out of all existing comfort zones altogether. Carmelo also left the alpine comfort zone at the beginning of 2011, trying to conquer the whole world, but this burden turned out to be unbearable for him. In the capital, Anthony did not become a legend, he probably should have remained a Colorado thane. Pride rarely leads to happiness.

And yes, as Lady Macbeth, of course, Lala Vasquez.

"Fences" (2016) - Earl Lloyd , the first African American to play in the NBA

An excellent dialogue film about the unbearable life of African Americans in the 1950s during the days of racial segregation. Basketball player Earl Lloyd, who made his NBA debut just in 1950, was constantly attacked, a fan in Indiana once spat at him, and many other bad things happened. Only now Lloyd entered the history of the NBA as a legendary hero and pioneer, and the character of Washington in the movie "Fences" causes not only sympathy, but also disgust. This is not racism - watch the movie, especially the second half, and you will understand exactly what I mean.

Training Day (2001) – Kawhi Leonard (San Antonio fans will know what I mean)

Great movie about partners, one of whom becomes a corrupt cop. Here, an experienced cop betrays a young one, in San Antonio it was the other way around, Kawhi betrayed all his older partners and the unshakable ideals of the organization. It was a very unexpected plot twist, just like in Training Day. Who would have thought that Denzel Washington would play a villain? Probably the same people who assumed that the quiet Kawai would not repeat the path of the quiet Tim Duncan, but would arrange an escape from the banks of the Alamo. It can never be like this, can it?

The Book of Eli (2010) - Here Denzel plays the messiah in a post-apocalyptic world suffering from the effects of nuclear war. While there are no direct analogies, let's hope that they will not appear.

Titans Remembered (2000) - Avery Johnson

Denzel was a high school football coach in the early 1970s. The times of racial segregation have just ended, but only on paper, in the minds of people, nothing really has changed. Washington is shown as a real coach-dictator like Avery Johnson. He constantly makes references to the combat experience of brothers in arms who fell in various wars, even leads the team to the graves of soldiers who died during the Civil War. In short, the nickname "little general" suits Denzel's character no less than Avery Johnson himself.

By the way, this is Reggie Miller's favorite film, but it's hard to watch because it's so edifying and formulaic. As was Avery Johnson's latest coaching experience.

"Replica" (1981) - Taylor Griffin (Blake Griffin's brother, pretended to be a basketball player for a while)

Denzel's first decent role in a big movie, he is still very nicely presented as a debutant during the credits. Forgotten tradition! The film is about how a white male businessman (played by the very famous New Hollywood era actor George Segal) suddenly finds out that he has a black son. The comedy is rather strange, some of the characters should have been canceled long ago for obvious racism. The best scene has to do with basketball, because the enterprising dad takes his newly born son by the arm and goes with him to an old friend to play against him and his (white) son. Of course, Denzel's father is sure of victory, because it cannot be that his black son cannot play basketball well.

As it turned out later, it may well be. Washington cannot catch a single ball, the team of a friend and his son wins with a devastating score, Segal's hero is furious. How come you found an African-American son, but he doesn't know how to play basketball?! But only he is to blame, because he was captured by stereotypes. Just like the " Phoenix " when he chose Blake's brother Griffin Taylor in the 2009 draft just because of his last name. Then it turned out that Taylor did not know how to play at all. It would seem that such things are better to check in advance.

Much Ado About Nothing (1993) – Pau Gasol (what? Yes)

Screen adaptation of Shakespeare's classic. Denzel plays the elegant Prince Don Pedro, an aristocrat with perfect manners and from a good family. Despite his size and military bearing, he has a lot of feminine mannerisms, but if necessary, he can stand up for himself. In other words, the spitting image of Pau Gasol.

"Malcolm X" (1992) - a story about a specific person whose name is in the title. It is rather difficult to compare him with NBA players - except perhaps with by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar , but it's too banal and there is no other comparison.

The Devil in a Blue Dress (1995) – Rajon Rondo , retro style ambassador

This is a very underrated film, which was even included in the program of the Film noir festival held in St. Petersburg once. The Other Side of Hollywood as the brightest representative of the neo-noir genre. Denzel is involved in the classic role of a detective in a hat, who is trying to find universal happiness and conquer a fatal girl, but in the end is left with nothing. Just like the heroes of Humphrey Bogart and Fred MacMurray in classic noirs 1940s.

Rondo has the same story. He is clearly not a player of the modern era, he would have to imitate Bob Kuzi, but deal with opponents, as they say, in his own way. It is impossible to find fault with the stylization process, it seemed that Rondo came to every match in a time machine from somewhere in the past, while in some incomprehensible way moving basketball into the future.
