Hey! Are you still there?

“I am in the country under sanctions, this does not affect the quality of life in any way.” Anton Ponkrashov discovers Iran

Anton Ponkrashov, who won gold at EuroBasket 2007 and bronze at the 2012 Olympics and EuroBasket 2011, is not thinking of saying goodbye to basketball. This year, the point guard left to conquer the Iranian championship and right now he is dragging his team in the semi-final series.

In this interview he tells:

• what surprised him during his business trip;

• why is it scary to drive with Iranians in cars;

• what are the prohibitions in Iran;

• something difficult to get used to;

• and why he is going to perform for another 5 years.

At the age of 35, Ponkrashov felt like a leader, on which the result depends

– How is your season going?

- Yes, everything is fine. We beat the Mahram team in the quarterfinals. I think for many this name does not mean anything, but if you look at the history, then this is a team that has reached the Final Four for 17 years in a row. For us, for a club that has just risen from the second division, a debutant of the Iranian Super League, this is more than a worthy result.

Now we are getting ready for the playoffs. 16 teams participate in the Iranian championship, and it is absolutely normal practice that several teams are relegated and then returned to the top division. There are teams that, for one reason or another, skip the season and then return. Quite a serious turnover, but 16 teams are still recruited.

– And what are the chances?

- In the semi-finals, as a rule, it depends on who will be better prepared. The schedule here is very difficult, because we played the quarter-final series in six days, which is three games. It turns out, a game, a day of rest, a game. Really hard, because I have to play here for an average of 38 minutes. The load is overwhelming.

In the semi-final series, the games will be on the 8th, 10th, 13th, 15th, 17th (if necessary). Relatively speaking, in nine days you have to give out five matches (in theory). Anyone understands what happens to your body if you play five matches in nine days.

- And why do you play with one five, practically without substitutions?

- It depends on the staffing of the team. Everyone has different budgets, the team we just beat has a budget three to four times bigger than ours. In such conditions, when the team was being created, it was decided that they would take two good foreigners, and the rest of the places would be filled with local guys - they would take those who were available.

Roughly speaking, the finances were not enough to sign players of the level of the Iranian national team. We have to release five to seven people: the level is so serious, the cost of a mistake is too high, they are forced to play in a short rotation.

– What is your role?

– Only two foreigners are allowed in Iran. My role is very different from what it was in the Russian Championship: here you need to not only organize, but also score points. Basically, the attack is built around me - so that I myself create and score points myself. I have a role that foreigners usually play in the VTB League - they bring a person to us who must score 30 points. So, by the age of 35, I tried on the role of a foreigner for myself.

– And how?

– Very satisfied.

There was a feeling of love for the game. When you stand in the corner and nothing depends on you (as it works in the VTB League), this is not the same. Here, the result of the team depends on me, this is responsibility, pressure ... And there is also a lot of work, a lot of fatigue, but at the same time, the buzz is that I play basketball. The conventional wisdom is that at 35 players are already old, and I'm glad that I can convince people that this is not at all the case.

"Basketball is not just about getting high"

- What can be compared with the level of the Iranian championship? With an amateur league in Russia?

- No. I think this is something between the VTB League and the Super League: most likely, the last teams in the VTB League and the best teams in the Super League would not have won the Iranian championship. The level is very serious. The Iranian championship is generally considered the strongest among Asian countries. Iranians are very physically gifted, it is never easy.

And what I really like about the Iranian championship is that here any team from the first to the tenth place can beat any.

Which in itself characterizes the championship as very worthy.

- Can you name the top 3 stars of the Iranian championship?

- For example, Jerome Randle played for Mahram. I think many people remember him from his performances for Lokomotiv, an American with a Ukrainian passport.

Everyone knows Kirill Fesenko - he played for Avtodor, Lokomotiv and Utah.

The guys are quite serious. The top team is played by a person who was recognized as the MVP of the Chinese Championship, with an NBA background. There are many players who cannot find themselves in Europe and come to Iran.

– What kind of basketball is played in Iran?

- It depends on who is in charge of the team. There are very different variations here. There are teams that understand that they can't win in classic basketball and play with a small five - it's hard to play with them because they run. The majority plays regular classical basketball, but builds the game through foreigners. Almost always it is an American who comes out on the first or second number and can beat one on one, and some "big" who understands the inside.

In principle, there are few differences from VTB. Except perhaps in terms of the class of players, because the VTB League is considered one of the strongest in Europe.

- How different are the workouts?

- My coach has worked with Europeans and understands what the training process should look like. Perhaps Pascual's training is heavier, more intense, but the training process is good, I work as usual and don't see any difference.

Unless here I can correct the training process myself: I myself understand when I am overloaded, I control my readiness myself, because I almost always have to be fresh before the games and withstand 37 minutes.

– What about refereeing?

- It is very different. My Serbian partner Nikola Dragovic is less patient in this regard, I am more relaxed about this, because I often played a lot on the streets, unfair decisions do not cause particularly strong emotions. The level is different: there are those who judge well, there are those who let you play hard. They always play tough against me, such a handsome guy from Russia came - this is an additional motivation for everyone. Nothing, hold on.

In all games there are removals, scandals, and claims. But what league doesn't? Everyone feels that they are being treated unfairly. But I did not notice any dirty game for six months.

– What is the salary level? Do Iranian basketball players stand out from ordinary people?

– You have to understand that not everything is so beautiful and fabulous in Iran. There is a strong stratification between the rich and the poor, and there are quite a few players who have come from the poorer classes. Basketball for them is not only a struggle for victories, not only an opportunity to get high, but also a way to feed themselves and their families. In my team, this is clearly visible. There are a couple of people from poor families, for them basketball is a chance for a better life.

I won't talk about numbers. I don't know what their salary is. I have never been interested in this, and, in principle, the world is not built around money.

Ponkrashov - Ibrahimovic from basketball

- How long did it take to decide to move to Iran?

- The situation was very simple: I trained in the summer and thought with my family about options for continuing my career, there were no offers from the VTB League - I came from Iran.

I think that few people in Russia know about Iran, just like that, my wife and I didn’t know anything: I googled it, looked it up, didn’t understand anything ... Nikola, who once played with us at Spartak, called me, he said, that they are looking for a foreigner for the role of the first number. I had already somehow decided by this moment and answered that I was ready. It did not take very long: the championship began in seven days. It turns out that I signed the contract, packed my things and flew - six or seven days passed between my arrival and the start of the championship.

– Was there something that scared you but turned out to be false?

– The country itself scared me, and the rule that you can’t wear shorts, and people who were not like us… Everyone told me: “There is a war, where you are going, it is dangerous there. ” With whom I did not communicate, everyone tried to dissuade me from a trip to Iran.

And so I arrived. Here everything is completely different: in some way it resembles Turkey in terms of mentality. I feel very comfortable here. The nation itself is very open, sociable, there are no problems. Perhaps people on the streets are perplexed when they see two huge people of Slavic appearance, but nothing more. In everyday life and in all other respects, I am very comfortable.

Tehran is also a big city, with a population of 16 million, everything you need can be found here.

– Were you instructed what not to do, what could cause problems?

- There's a rule here that you can't wear shorts. Men always wear pants. The only exception is when we go to training. In general, this is not such a strict prohibition, but they try to comply with it.

The main rule is a ban on alcohol. Here with it strictly.

I am a calm person on my own, I have never had any problems with discipline. Therefore, I do not see any differences between Russia and Iran in terms of discipline. There are basic things to follow.

- They say that you can't touch women there...

- I haven't experimented. They have a rule that you need to keep your distance, but I don’t know, I haven’t come across such situations.

I know only such an interesting case. Nikola and I go to the same cafe here, where we often have breakfast and dinner. And then we learned that they were closed for a week due to the fact that the woman's head was not covered.

– You were always talking about how important the family is, and then they all left and went to Iran…

– It so happened that the wife was pregnant, the son goes to school. We thought that at this stage it would be the right decision that I would go and my wife would stay at home so as not to fly before giving birth and so on…

Yes, the family has always been in the first place. And this is for me both the first experience of playing abroad, and the first experience of parting with my family for a long time, but sometimes you have to make such decisions for the good, let's say, of the future. I think that basketball will still be in my life for a long time, somehow at the family council they decided that we had to be patient. If there are any other options in the future, I will of course take my family with me. I have always said and will continue to say: family comes first for me, this is the most valuable thing in life. I never forget about it.

– Why is basketball so important? After all, many already get tired of it even by the age of 30...

– Everyone has a different feeling. I feel that I can still play, I feel that I have not had enough of basketball ... When the feeling of devastation comes, then I will finish. But right now I don't feel ready to retire. Many also finish because there are some further prospects, but I see myself in sports: as long as I can compete and play at a high level, I will play.

The same question can be asked to Zlatan Ibrahimovic: “Why does he play football?”

Because he has motivation, there is an understanding that he can perform at the highest level. He didn't get enough of the game.

I have the same situation. I want to play, I want to improve, I want to win. Motivation is always the most important thing in sports: as long as I have it, I work.

The food was so bad that your stomach was in disarray

– In Russia, you had to wash your uniform yourself. How is the club organized in Iran?

– I didn't always play for clubs where I had to do my own laundry. Not always.

In Iran we live in a hotel - we have a team from another city, and all matches are held in Tehran. Therefore, we have a hotel lifestyle. With life here, everything is simpler: the training is over, things are in the bag, the bag was taken away, they brought clean.

In terms of everyday issues, everything is clear here.

- How closely does the club take care of the players? Here in CSKA they do everything for the players, but there?

- Specifically, we are very well taken care of, I don't see any problems. In general, the Iranians are very responsive: there is something you need, they will always take you, bring you, show you . ..

Probably, when you got to CSKA, you understand how the system should work. Well, this is the highest level in Europe, a top club that has been showing for years what the training system of a superteam should look like. Everyone is far from CSKA, but here everyone is doing everything to the best of their ability to make us feel good here.

Everyone who watches my vlogs understands that the atmosphere inside the team is more like a family, it gives a certain emotional boost. When you are in a friendly team, it is easier to break through in difficult situations.

– According to the vlog, they seem somehow too carefree and relaxed…

- I think it's just such a nation. They are much easier to relate to many things than we are. I don’t know if this is inherent in upbringing or if this is our team. They definitely have their problems, but somehow they manage, it is not particularly noticeable that they are stressed.

– What was the hardest thing to get used to?

- Food. She is very different. They have dishes that are similar to ours, but at first the stomach got used to it for a long time.

They almost always use rice. I am not a fan of rice anyway, and if we are talking about lunches, dinners ordered by the team, then there is always rice. So much rice! Plus, they love to add mushrooms to all dishes, but I don’t eat them at all. Plus sauces ... In general, the stomach was junk at first, but it took ten days to get used to everything.

- This food doesn't seem to be suitable for athletes...

- They just relate to it. We have cola, fanta, sprite, some juices at our team dinners. Here somehow everything is easier. If you want to drink, if you want, don't drink. There is no such thing that something is impossible, because it can affect the game.

– What surprised you the most?

- The Iranians themselves in the first place. Both openness and friendliness. They have had these family traditions for generations, it is felt that everything revolves around the family, any holiday is necessarily held in the family.

Tehran surprised me a lot. There are many museums here. I try to get out somewhere every two weeks, take pictures. There are things that evoke interesting emotions. In one of the vlogs, I filmed the largest shopping center, I have never seen anything like it, there is a library, and fountains, and everything ... We live in the world of social networks, but we don’t know anything about Iran.

Plus, I was surprised by the island of Kish, it is called the "Iranian Maldives". This is a separate world, not like Iran. There are a lot of places worth seeing.

- Let's name the top 3 places for which it is worth coming to Iran.

It is a must to go to Kish Island. Kish was made as a separate non-visa city specifically for tourist positions. I went there to prolong my visa without returning to Russia.

Tehran is cool in terms of museums and various historical sites.

Iran is generally a country for those who are interested in seeing what was before our birth.

– Is basketball popular in Iran? Are you recognized on the streets?

– It happens. I went to the market a couple of times, they even shouted after me: “Ponkrashaw”. So someone is watching my releases.

In general, the entire league is broadcast online on Instagram, so, for example, my wife follows my matches in Russia.

If we are talking about a high-level game, then it is usually watched by about a thousand people. For me, this is a good result.

Due to covid, all matches are now played without fans. I talked to the guys about this: last year they played with fans, and they said that in the stands in every city it’s crazy, from three to five thousand are going to the game.

This indicates that the sport is popular. Plus, Iran is a country that is almost always selected for the Olympics. The figures are serious. This means that basketball is interesting and developing.

The main thing is communication within the team (and a bit of hazing)

– Mozgov says that the most important thing in basketball is communication within the team. Is it hard to play when there are few people to talk to?

- Yes, no problem. I guess it depends on the guys. When I played in Russia - I can even tell by my own example - many are embarrassed to communicate, embarrassed to look stupid. At first, I was also embarrassed to communicate with foreigners, there was a language barrier. In our team, three people speak well, the rest speak badly. At the same time, we communicate, find ways to communicate. I like that they are all open - there is no such thing that he does not speak English and therefore does not communicate with you at all. Although this is the easiest. I've been through this myself, it's easier not to talk at all.

Here everyone is relaxed, everyone somehow jokes, trying to understand each other. I really like the mentality and manner of communication.

– Is there hazing?

– Of course, why not? Here Sergei Monya, Yegor Vyaltsev, Evgeny Voronov understand me. Where without it? As we were taught, so we teach. Not hard, of course, but present. No nonsense, easy things: somewhere to joke, to pinch the young God himself ordered.

- When Russia overtook Iran in the number of sanctions, did the locals react?

- No. In fact, here I am in the country under sanctions and I see that this does not affect the quality of my life in any way. Perhaps the quality of life of the locals is affected and they have problems, but I simply cannot know about it, I do not encounter it. The only thing is that some things cost more than they would cost in Europe, I don’t see any more difficulties. There is no McDonald's yet, for those who love fast food, this is probably a problem. Apple products are here, except that they cost 10 percent more than they cost in Russia.

I don't see much difference. Perhaps this is just for me, because I live a slightly different life.

– But, for example, how do they transfer your salary if the cards do not work?

- They have their own banking system, they are also disconnected from swift. She works within the country. There are ways to get paid. There were no problems with this.

Be afraid of Iranian drivers

- You showed how Iranians drive cars. Did this cause any trouble?

- No. Although, of course, when you go with a driver or by taxi, it is always stressful. They drive very briskly, they cross solid roads. In general, I myself learned to drive in Moscow very aggressively, at one time I was taught by Nikita Kurbanov, but then it turned out that Moscow is a kindergarten compared to what is happening in Iran. Even in Tehran, the movement is average, but in Sirjan, where my team is from, people perform, God forbid. I have to slow them down, calm them down so that they don’t drive so sharply: “checkers”, crossing two solid ones, driving in the opposite direction ... At the same time, all this seems to be not punished: there have never been any clashes or police in my presence.

– Why don't you drive yourself?

- Yes, somehow I did not ask this question. The club gave us a driver. And taxis here are very cheap - you can get from one end to the other for a few dollars. Why then a car?

- Remember, you showed how the lights went out in the hall. Is this a typical moment?

Universal Lennon Gimme Some Truth 9 Vinyl Record0029 “This happened for the first and last time. In the fourth quarter, three minutes before the end, the light was cut, and for everyone it was a shock. This is such an interesting experience. And we waited half an hour until the electricity was turned on. It may have been chopped off all over the area. It turns out that we spent the ending after 40 minutes.

Ponkrashov is going to play until the age of 40

- Looking at Iran, do you think that such closeness will benefit Russian basketball?

- I think so. This is an opportunity for Russian players to show themselves. It is clear that most of them know how to play basketball. But they often do not have the opportunity to express themselves. They operate within a narrow role. Almost everyone, with the exception of the Swede. Now they have to get a new challenge, a new chance. For Russian basketball, this will definitely be beneficial.

– Do you think you will come back yourself?

- I don't think about it at all. All my life I thought and thought: what will happen, how will it pass, and what is the prospect ...

There is no point in this. Who would have told me a few years ago that I would end up in Iran would never have believed it. But I'm here, I think that you just need to trust the universe, trust yourself, and then you will find yourself where you should be. Thinking will get you nowhere. I calmly wait for where they will send me next: if Russia is good, another place is excellent.

Ready for anything.

– So you don't regret going to Iran?

- It was a super experience and an opportunity to feel what it is. I had options to leave many times, but I never dared to take such a step. Finally, at the age of 35, I did it and I think that this is the right decision.

All my life I have been playing in the “comfort zone”. Everything suited me: Russia, good contracts, good teams... Due to some circumstances, I never managed to try what it means to be a foreigner, to be a person from whom results are required. I am very glad now that I can pass this test with dignity.

– If I ask where you see yourself in five years, what would be the answer?

- I don't know. I want my daughter to see her dad play basketball. It's important for me. My whole family sees that I play, understands what I do in order to stay on the level . ..

- Wait, she was born two months ago.

- Well, in five years she will be five years and two months old, she will remember her dad playing basketball and doing things. It's important for me.
