Agent Stanislav Ryzhov: Karasev missed his chance to earn credibility in the US.

Stanislav Ryzhov is the first Russian agent accredited by the NBA. Dozens of VTB United League players are his clients. He solved the problems of Timofey Mozgov and Sergey Karasev. Every year he brings more than a dozen legionnaires to Russia. The correspondent of "Sport Day after Day" learned from Stanislav Ryzhov what awaits Sergei Karasev at Zenit, what is the trouble with rich clubs, and how a former Spartak player became a violinist.

Zenit has a tradition keeper

— Let's start with your client Sergei Karasev's move to Zenit. Some experts believe that his NBA career was ruined by agents. Like, they chose the wrong club for Karaseva.
- Incorrect words. The current NBA draft system cannot be reversed. Timofey Mozgov could decide where to play, since he was not selected in the draft, which means that the rights to him did not belong to anyone.

- Karasev also had a trade from Cleveland to Brooklyn.
- Agents here, if they influence, then, as a rule, much less than they say. The most high-profile player exchanges took place without their consent. Often without their knowledge.

— Why didn't Karasev play in the NBA?
Let's go back three years to when the Clevelands selected Karasev in the NBA draft. That summer, he played at the Universiade under his father and missed the NBA summer league.

Is that bad?
- In the summer league you earn authority. If a drafted player arrives at his team's training camp at the same time as, for example, LeBron James or Kobe Bryant, it's hard to expect you to be very trustworthy.

— In what position will Karasev's best qualities be revealed in Zenit?
- Sergei is considered the third number, but good dimensions give him an advantage both from the second number and from the first. But this does not mean that he will carry the ball all over the court against pressure. There is such a thing as a "point forward" - a person who can play in a rally, who gives the ball well. I think Sergey will be used to the maximum in this role.

— What does Zenit need to do to become a Euroleague level team?
- Definitely - an increase in the budget. Next, you need to select new players and create team chemistry. The development vector of Zenit is correct.

— What will Zenit look like next season?
- The backbone of the team has been preserved. The leaders remain - Janis Timma and Ryan Toulson. Around them "Zenith" will be built anew. Also extended Kyle Landry. This is the guardian of the traditions of the team. We need strengthening in the position of the fourth number - Zenit is now doing this. There are questions on the first number.

- Will Zabian Dowdall leave the team?
- He is my client. The leadership of Zenit said that it was not yet ready to make an offer. Although, in my opinion, Dowdell had a crazy season. The best of his European career.

- Can we say that he was no worse than his predecessor - Walter Hodge?
- Each hero of his time. Hodge was also my client. At that moment, Walter was exactly what you need. Why did he leave? Hodge asked for an inadequate pay raise. As life has shown, he was wrong. We couldn't convince him. However, for Zenit everything turned out well. Let's imagine it was Hodge instead of Dowdall this season. How many balls would Tulson or Timma see then?

The bigger the budget, the worse

— In your opinion, the three most successful transfers in the history of Zenit?
— Perhaps the transfer number 1 is Timma. The classic third number for European basketball is quite rare.

- Can Timma play in the NBA?
- Maybe, but his position is highly competitive. By the standards of the NBA, he is purely the third number, of which there are many. Timma has nowhere to grow in power - no one can push him through anyway. Can be added in an individual pass, in ball handling. Some psychological qualities will be added by themselves with age and experience.

- Understood. Who is in second place among successful transfers?
- Ryan Toolson. Exceeded expectations from my purchase. Yes, Toulson is a famous player, maybe the best hand in Europe, but he didn't play an exclusive role in Spain. I didn't score as many goals as in Zenit, moreover, at crucial moments. If memory serves, for Toulson last season is the most successful in his career. Hodge or Dowdell could be put in third place. Each in its own way was useful in a particular season. However, I will be original: the third is Omar Thomas. At almost 35 years old, he came from the last team of the VTB League (Georgian "Vita" - "Sport Day after Day") and brought so much benefit.

Why didn't they leave Thomas this summer?
- He had injuries, and age is taking its toll.

- Now let's move on to bad transfers.
- Zenit is only two years old. Perhaps there were no failed transfers. Cameron Jones? Possibly, but he was not expected to act beyond the limits. In terms of price / quality - a normal transfer.

- What about DJ Stephans?
- Yes, this is a no-throw player. But it cost a penny! Stephans was ridiculous for the fans. I have often shared these emotions. In the NBA, there is such a thing as alter shots in defense - this is when you didn’t cover the shot, but changed it. Conditionally - scared. This is about Stephens. I can't write it down in selection failures. Somehow he helped.

- Why didn't Zenit keep Kaspars Berzins in the squad?
- In my understanding, if Landry was extended, then there is no room for Berzins. The Latvian was taken when Landry was injured.

— Why did two players at once, Pavel Antipov and Alexander Karpukhin, move from Zenit to UNICS?
- There is no connection here - just a coincidence. In UNICS there was a need for these players. No one has a desire to strengthen or weaken any team. I know this for sure from the inside, from the negotiations. There are quite a lot of players on the market, enough for everyone. By the way, Zenit could leave Antipov and Karpukhin.

- You probably already know - increased the budget of "Zenith" for the upcoming season?
- Yes. At least in words. I can judge this by inquiries to me. I get messages that Zenit needs to close some position for so much money. Now the numbers sound bigger than before.

- That is, Zenit feels freer in terms of choosing players?
— On the contrary! Practice shows that the larger your budget, the more difficult the choice. There is no freedom here: there are far fewer players for a million dollars than for 300 thousand. In addition, some expensive players were playing for much less money three to five years ago. You can’t just give someone a million and hope that he will come and solve the problem.

There are no transfers in basketball

- What are the current prices for players in European basketball?
— There is a psychological maximum mark of two million — if we talk about salary. There are certain players who step over it. Often these are false salaries. For example, you have a bonus. And you consider him a guaranteed salary and tell everyone about it. Although units really receive these bonuses.

- These are salaries. And what is the amount of compensation between clubs?
- There are almost no transfers in basketball. Contracts are usually short term. For a year or according to the "2 + 1" scheme. Departure from the club recorded in advance. For example, we are negotiating for two years. And the club wants three. Then I say let's put some way out. That's the difference with football - it's all about transfers. When I hear that in football players transfer for some money, I am surprised.

- Suppose CSKA wants to get Timma, and he has a year of contract with Zenit. What can the soldiers do?
- Come and ask: "How much?" In "Zenith" they will jokingly answer that a billion. Who will you buy instead of Timma? Theoretically, CSKA can pay, but until there are exit conditions, Timma will be a Zenit player.

— A year ago, Dmitry Kulagin moved from Zenit to CSKA. Why is he sitting on the bench almost without getting out?
— It's just about competition. Kulagin spent the season in the strongest club in Europe. I don’t really understand the popular opinion when people speak unflatteringly about the players going to CSKA: “That’s it, go, sit on the can.” In my opinion, on the contrary, the player's confidence and his desire to compete can only be praised.

— But two years ago he was the leader at Zenit, and now he only plays for five minutes.
- If you think like that, then no one needs to go to CSKA. But sometimes you need to. Someone earlier, someone later. Everyone has an individual. For example, Anton Ponkrashov moved to CSKA several times. He never went there blindly. Each time it was a conversation with the coach, he explained his role to him, he understood. But something didn't work out.

— Will Kulagin still try to gain a foothold in CSKA?
- His agent is negotiating with the army, and I don't know how they will end. Kulagin may consider other offers, but he wants to stay. The guy is very ambitious. Don't forget that CSKA's mentor Dimitris Itoudis is a relatively complex tactical coach. You can't play his basketball right away.

— Has the topic been closed for Kulagin with the NBA?
— Before there was interest in him, there was an offer to go to the summer league. Naturally, after such a season it will not be considered. But the trend is such that the NBA does not close the gates for anyone forever. We have children's coaches who wonder why they work so much at 27, you can't improve anything anyway. In America, a completely different attitude to this. You can improve technical characteristics at any age, there is no restriction.

NBA scouts visit Russia all the time

— Now let's move on to the foreign players limit. Previously, it was under the “3 + 2” scheme ...
— I will not hide it, such a limit was in the hands of agents. According to the laws of economics, the limit unequivocally leads to higher prices. Miracles can't be here. I do not want to say that the prices were inadequate or overpriced - there is no such thing. There is a market. Since this money was paid to Russian guys, it means that they were.

- What did it lead to?
— What is a limit? You play on the court and you know that you will play. Even if you make a mistake somewhere, you miss somewhere, you can only be replaced by another Russian player. What does it give? First on the good side - confidence. Take the current generation of 30-year-old players - Vitaly Fridzon, Anton Ponkrashov ... There are doubts whether they would have reached the same serious level if there was no limit. I'm not saying they wouldn't. It just can't be judged clearly. And now there is no limit. For example, in the end, many teams easily leave with all the legionnaires. This means that the Russian guys will not have experience in dealing with issues in the end. This leads to the fact that when they play in the Russian national team, where there are no legionnaires, in the end everyone can only play along, and no one can finish.

- But there is another side.
— I can also understand the position of the clubs. We had a lot of players who were relaxed by the limit. But I don't blame them. I would look at you at the age of 18, give you a million, probably, anyone will blow their heads off.

— Coaches with a 3+2 limit also had a hard time.
- For a basketball coach where there are constant changes, it's very hard. Forcing the coach to think about who you have in the clearing with which passport is probably still wrong. Personally, I see a scheme of five legionnaires as some kind of alternative to all this. By this we do not put the coach in the framework - he does not consider, but simply leads the game.

- Now the limit is different - at least six Russians in the application for the game. What if the old limit is returned?
— In the current economic situation, this will be difficult for our clubs. On the other hand, well, who makes you pay this money? We constantly joke with the leaders of the clubs: "Let's introduce a limit, I need to feed my family better. " I, as an agent and a Russian person, will only be happy. Until the age of 35, the guys will earn for life.

— Why don't our basketball players play in Europe?
- We have a strong league, good salaries. Do you, for example, know a lot of Spaniards in Europe? When you go as a legionnaire, what role do you need - obviously not to serve shells, but to resolve the issue on the site. Obviously, the American will do it better.

— Is there an interest in Russian players in the NBA?
- There is an interest in strong players. You won't believe how much each club's scouting services have grown over the past few years. They are everywhere - Asia, Africa, Russia. Tomorrow there will be a new Shved, Kirilenko or Mozgov, and they will be in the NBA. There is interest. Scouts constantly come to Russia, watch our players, take notes.

— How prepared are the graduates of our children's sports schools?
— Not ready at all. Huge gaps. And this is not the fault of children's coaches, but an objective reality. For example, we admire the Serbs and scold our players. But there is no economy in Serbia, the local championship is weak. And so young athletes can immediately play at the male level. We have objective factors - we have money, legionnaires. You can't blame it. No school in the world can provide a ready-made player for the VTB United League. It's impossible. But the fact that we do not have a middle class where the players could beat themselves, this, of course, is a minus. I'm talking about student basketball now - this is the place that needs to be developed. The best player in the youth championship cannot immediately play even in Super League-1. Because it's a male competition.

- Any more problems?
— Our children's coaches are often looking for immediate results. They can be understood. Won some gold in Russia - there is an addition to the salary. But how do they achieve this? They put in a healthy accelerator, which, when they catch up in development, he will not be able to play. Still, you need to look at a basketball player from the point of view of playing at the highest level. Relatively speaking, everyone should strive to get into the NBA. The third number without reference is ridiculous. Soon it will be funny when the fourth is without a lead. Now no one needs a “four” without a throw. In addition to universalism, all the guys should be taught to play facing the ring and handle the ball confidently. And you can always have time to drive with your back to the ring and put the guy under the bar.

— What qualities should be paid attention to from childhood?
- Footwork is very important. Why are African Americans so strong? The first step is so fast. You can be a brilliant player and see the court like Ponkrashov - it was from childhood. But at the same time, he never had the first step and he never appeared. Although Ponkrashov trains more than anyone, he is a fanatic. Or Swede. Well, it's just an American. His explosion, athleticism, a set of sharp qualities that allow him to get away from the spot, throw in a jump.

Beverly is the perfect second fiddle

Is it possible to bring some aging NBA star to Russia?
- In 1995, Dominic Wilkins beat all of Europe solo. Yes, even on foot. Now this is impossible. But outgoing NBA stars are still on offer. This is one of the habits of American agents who, from old memory, say: “We have such and such a player, once he scored 15 points, last season he sat on the bench, but with you he will score these 15 points ". Nothing like this.

— When Spartak St. Petersburg signed Patrick Beverly, was it clear that he was an NBA-level player?
- Spartak, of course, gave him a big push. But it cannot be said that Beverly was found somewhere. For specialists, he was a well-known player. His playing style is great for the NBA - the perfect second fiddle player. What he did in Spartak is less characteristic of him. Remember how many endings he screwed up. NBA scouts came to one game of Spartak, and Patrick found out about it and tried to show that he can do anything in attack. People were a little disappointed. They knew that Beverly was a great defensive player. But everything worked out in the end. His arrival in the NBA is not a miracle.

- How to figure out who will really become a star from the variety of American players?
- There is a great example - our client Malcolm Delaney. It was obvious from college that in Europe it would be a strong player. It is not obvious that a superstar - such predictions cannot be made. Delaney had a medium start in Europe. Then he had a step forward in Budivelnik. And then he withstood a year of work with Svetislav Pesic, and his shares immediately shot up. When an American of this style is able to play with an old-school Serbian coach, this is immediately a plus. Who could have guessed this? Yes, no one. It is also very important to get to your coach. There are situations when they call me from the club: "Stas, we need this player." I answer: “No, he will not play with you. Decide for yourself, of course, but these two people - the player and the coach - are incompatible. "

- How to protect yourself from mistakes?
- Absolute failures are difficult to admit. If you do not choose a player by highlights, then by devoting a few hours of your time to watching videos, you will fence yourself off from guaranteed mistakes. If you are offered a list of 20 people, you will watch the full match with their participation. Even if it's unsuccessful. Then, as a rule, you narrow down the list to three people and puzzle over who to take.

— What other factors should I pay attention to?
- Usually jewelry work with first years. Ideally, in Russia it is better not to mess with them at all. The whole point is not in the civilization of the world, but in adaptation. You have to consider where he used to live. For example, a guy is used to living in a metropolis, and then he is brought to a small town. Stress. You also need to pay attention to his family: he is close, far away, a single player or a married one.
