How to evaluate basketball players

Basketball Player Evaluation Form for Tryouts

Any basketball coach knows the pressure of conducting fair and effective tryouts. No matter skill level, age, or competitive setup, picking the right players to populate your team stands as one of the most challenging choices to make. That’s why having the right basketball player evaluation form is integral for your tryouts.

Often times, developing your tryout can be more difficult that even setting up a playing rotation. Tryout day stands as one of the hardest yet most important days on the calendar. How a coach assembles to roster has wide ranging implications for the season.

Basketball Tryouts Form Opinions for Key Player Evaluation

The first question any coach needs to ask themself is: what type of team will you have? The answer to this question will largely influence the types of drills you select. These drills will be staples of any practice plan, but they’ll also be valuable evaluation tools during tryouts.

Key aspects to consider are skill and athleticism. Transition drills often provide an effective measure for these areas. In these drills, players need to demonstrate how well they run and what type of shape they’re in, as well as how they control the ball and finish. From there, higher level transition drills can evaluate decision making skills as well.

Station work tends to give coaches the opportunity to measure specific basketball skills for individual players. This becomes particularly effective for coaching staffs with multiple members. That said, even if you’re working alone, having the players rotate through stations gives you a glimpse of each player’s skill level in a given area. These stations can include ball handling, form shooting and free throws, among other things.

Grouping players together for small competitive games also provides basketball coaches with solid information for the player evaluation form. Organize players into 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 competitions to see how they operate in a team environment. In these small group environments, it’s harder for players to “hide.”

Another important element to consider exists outside the basic skill and athleticism evaluation. The intangible skills of communication and teamwork often separate a player’s effectiveness on the floor. Incorporating drills that push these skills to the forefront provide coaches with important information about each player. These drills or situations can shine a light on players with leadership potential.

Areas of Evaluation

The Basketball Player Evaluation Form provides space for coaches to consider several different skills and traits for each player. Among those areas are offensive skills like shooting, dribbling, and passing. In addition, defense and rebounding skills need measurement. Other general areas on the form include athletic ability, coachability, and game play. Finally, the form provides space for overall strength evaluation.

The Foundation of Basketball Player Evaluations

An accurate basketball player evaluation is an important part of a player’s development. It is also important to coaches that currently work, or plan to work, with players. Player evaluations are used by college recruiters and scouting services. Basketball player evaluations are also used by the Select Basketball coaching staff when selecting players for our teams.

When making a basketball player evaluation the goal is to get a thorough feel for the player as they stand today and project the type of player they will be in the future. The basketball player evaluation is based on both tangible and non-tangible factors. Though a decent evaluation can be made in a single session (such as a short tryout) the best evaluations are pieced together over multiple sessions and over a period of time.

Evaluating a basketball player is not easy and it often helps to break down a player’s abilities into different areas. This gives evaluators a way to compare one player against another and for multiple evaluators to compare the same player from different perspectives.

The Skill Set Evaluation

This area is pretty straightforward and is exactly like it sounds. How well does a player shoot? How do they handle the ball under pressure? Does a player know how to get position for a rebound and block out their opponent? Feel for the game is also considered a skill as it can be developed over time. One of the easiest things to evaluate is a player’s skill level at their position.

The Athletic Evaluation

As more basketball player evaluations happen over time, the more accurate the player’s evaluation becomes

Evaluating a player’s athletic ability is also straightforward. Often it is an area that lends itself to a player’s potential as most coaches feel like they can take an athletic player and develop their fundamental skills later. Athleticism includes things like a player’s lateral quickness, ability to get vertical and the ability to control your body through contact. A player’s athletic ability used to be considered an attribute that you are born with but it is now known that athleticism can be improved with hard work.

The Body Evaluation

The harsh reality about evaluating a basketball player’s body is that some factors are out of a player’s control. Their height, their length, and their frame are usually things that a player is born with and cannot be altered. But they do factor into a basketball player evaluation.

However, the player does control a lot of other factors. And these factors can also positively or negatively affect their athletic evaluation.

Does the player have the right kind of size and strength and is it improving? This is where working in the weight room and agility training pays off.

Is the player in good physical condition? Are they carrying extra weight? This is often controlled by their workouts and their diet.

The Game Time Evaluation

Let’s face it, often a player’s evaluation can come down to how they respond to game situations. Do they continuously make the smart play, no matter how simple? When the pressure is on to make a shot or make a stop, do they deliver, or do they shy away from the challenge? How do their teammates respond to them? Are they a leader when they are in the game? Do they lead from the bench? If things are going poorly, do they respond with bad body language or do they find other ways to contribute?

Often this is also referred to as mental toughness. This is an area where multiple evaluations over time can give an evaluator a more accurate picture of who the player is.

Developing an accurate basketball player evaluation can be tough. But done thoroughly it can provide great insight to the overall quality of a player and help project how that player will do in the future.

Basic positions of players in the basketball team

Basketball is a team sport in which everything depends on the unique abilities of each of the team members. And while the players on today's basketball teams are multifunctional and can substitute for each other to a greater or lesser extent, each of them has a role to play.

In this article, we'll talk about the five traditional roles in basketball without which no game will take place. Why know this? To understand how the team is initially built and, accordingly, how the game itself works.

Knowing your position in the team, you will be able to successfully lead your team to victory! For fans, this knowledge will help to better analyze the course of the game and assess the complexity of each movement on the field.

So, here are the roles that will be discussed:

  1. point guard
  2. Attacking defender
  3. small forward
  4. Power forward
  5. Center

The point guard is usually the shortest player on the team, but has highly developed ball handling skills and a high basketball IQ. Such players are usually responsible for dribbling the ball around the field. They are behind the fact that the attack was built taking into account the weaknesses and strengths of the enemy. It is no coincidence that the point guard is often referred to as the outfield general or coach on the court.

On defense, these players are responsible for holding back the other team's point guard, and their ability to analyze, predict, and disrupt the opponent's strategy is critical to the outcome of the game. Therefore, it is important that the rest of the team listens to the point guard's recommendations, and that he himself is good at communicating with others.

Attacker is the position of a player interchangeable with the point guard role as their roles are similar. However, unlike the point guard, who focuses more on building up the attack, the offensive player's goal is to score from anywhere on the court. Because of this, many offensive tactics are centered around defender throws.

This position is more focused on the offensive, and such a player implements defensive tactics around the weakest member of the opposing team. Attackers may also assist the point guard in ball play if the point guard is heavily guarded.

The small forward is the most versatile player on the team both offensively and defensively. This is due to the fact that they are usually slightly smaller than the power forward and center in height and build, but have the accuracy, ball control and basketball IQ of defensemen.

These players usually play near the edges of the three-point arc, as there is relative freedom of movement and a shot can be made from there. Small forwards usually block the best player on the opposing team because they have the ability to reach and block the shot, they have the weight to push the opponent away, and they are endowed with the speed and agility of the defenders.

The power forward is usually the second tallest player on the team and plays near the free throw circle. This player is responsible for blocking the opponent; it depends on him whether the offensive will be successful. Because the power forward plays such an important role in offense, he also needs to be able to accurately shoot the ball from medium range to score if the ball is passed to him after a screen by a defender.

In addition, the power forward is often responsible for holding the ball, allowing stronger team members to advance. With defensive tactics, such players take on the protection and blocking of those opponent's shots that the center cannot reach.

The center is the tallest and heaviest player on the team, playing under the basket. Posts dominate with weight and strength, using height and jump to get the ball over the heads of shorter players. Such players also block the opponent near the edge of the field to give space for a defender or small forward to shoot.

Traditionally, centers have not been able to shoot with high accuracy, but today everything is different: centers at least know how to make medium-range shots, and some are capable of three-point shots. Such centers are called "stretch 5".

Do you remember all the roles? Try to put them into practice: while watching the game or honing your own skills on the court!
