Marie Kondo Folding Shorts - Things That Fold

Miscellaneous

by Things That Fold Teamupdated on Leave a Comment on Marie Kondo Folding Shorts

What would Things That Fold be without a little homage to the guru of all things folding, Marie Kondo?  Even though I haven’t gone full KonMari (yet), her empathetic and functional style has changed my life.  After reading her book and bingeing her Netflix special, I finally learned how to part with the quasi-sentimental items that apartment dwellers must ruthlessly confront on a regular basis.  Note I didn’t say sentimental items, I’m still working on that one!

Anyways, with the newest addition to our family I realized that one tiny “bedroom”, if you could even call it a bedroom, with one closet, had to fit all of the clothes for both of my kids, not to mention all of the other stuff that kids need.   As one is a baby and one is a preschooler, that is a WHOLE LOT OF TINY CLOTHES. Kids grow so quickly that I try to stock up on on sale items in every size and wait for the kids to grow into them.

So this means that every nook and cranny of that closet has to be used to perfection.  There is no space to waste. The kids need blankets, crib sheets, winter pajamas, summer pajamas, socks, underwear, long sleeve shirts, short sleeve shirts, bathing suits, hats, gloves, leggings, pants, shorts, tights, sweaters, jackets, dresses and, my personal favorite, a tiny tuxedo.  For real we go to a lot of weddings.

In order to cram all of this stuff into such a tiny space it needs to be folded just so.  Enter the genius wisdom of Marie Kondo. Watching this lady fold clothes is like watching Serena Williams serve ace after ace after ace.  Perfection, every single time.

Now I’m not exactly striving for the same echelon as Marie Kondo.  I fold laundry with the help of my four-year-old, who gets an A for effort but even with the help of one of those nifty folding boards (stay tuned for our upcoming review!), well let’s just say that he is more, ahem, creative in his interpretation of her technique.

I try to give him the easy things to fold, like shorts.  They are relatively small, fairly symmetrical, and generally less complicated than, say, a button down shirt.  Marie Kondo has a really awesome way to fold shorts, because of course she does.

Like all of her folding, the goal is to make everything visible at all times.  She achieves this by making clothing stand up so it can all be viewed from above.  Each item is folded into a rectangle of the same size, and filed next to, not on top of, the other items.

In order to get that perfect rectangle when folding shorts she makes sure to tuck in the tiny part of the pants that protrudes from the seat.  When your shorts are folded in half vertically you will notice this little part that extends to make room for your bottom. Simply fold it in towards the center before continuing to fold the shorts in half again, this time horizontally.  A little tricky for a four-year-old but he’s catching on quickly.

I may never reach the level where I “convey love to my clothes from the palms of my hands”, but I can definitely appreciate a well-organized closet!

KonMari Method of Folding Light Shorts

Marie Kondo’s method of folding light shorts has three steps:

  1. Fold the shorts vertically in half
  2. Tuck in the extra fabric that protrudes from the back
  3. Fold the shorts again, horizontally
  • Folding Light Shorts
  • Step 1: Fold in Half Vertically
  • Step 2: Tuck in Extra Fabric
  • Step 3: Fold in Half Horizontally

KonMari Method of Folding Thicker Shorts

Marie Kondo’s method of folding heavier shorts has only two steps:

  1. Fold the shorts vertically in thirds
  2. Fold the shorts again, horizontally
  • Folding Heavy Shorts
  • Step 1: Fold one third of the shorts in vertically towards the center
  • Step 2: Fold the other third of the shorts in vertically towards the center
  • Step 3: Fold the shorts in half horizontally

Folding Shorts - What is the Best Method?

Keeping your clothes organized may seem easy: you just put things away when they’re clean, right? Unfortunately for our time and patience, a neat wardrobe involves much more effort than that. Different clothes in our wardrobe need different approaches to folding so they can look good and stay as wrinkle-free as possible.

You should also apply this logic when you’re folding shorts. They take up relatively little space and are fairly symmetrical, thus, less complicated than items like button-down shirts. However, you should still determine the best way to fold shorts by their style and material. Are you confused yet? We’ve put together an easy, comprehensive guide on how to fold shorts.

How to Fold Casual Shorts

Casual shorts come in all shapes and sizes. From long lounge shorts to trendy cargo and retro styles, folding shorts to save space means you have to make considerations for each style. Simple shorts, like trousers, are pretty straightforward. It is the bulky kind that requires a special technique. Below, we’ve broken down the steps for folding even the trickiest materials.

How to fold jean shorts:

  1. Smooth out the pockets by inserting your hands into each pocket hole.
  2. Hold the shorts upright and shake them out before laying them down on your folding surface.
  3. Fold one leg over the other, making sure to line up the short’s legs so that the seams remain on the outside. This helps to prevent wrinkles.
  4. Fold the shorts in half or more, depending on space.

Note: Because jeans can be bulky, it’s better to leave out the crotch rather than tuck it into the sides before folding.

For heavier shorts like cargo shorts:

  1. Button the waistband
  2. Smooth out the pockets.
  3. Fold the shorts vertically in thirds: One third towards the center, the same for a third of the other leg to create an overlap.
  4. Fold them once horizontally.

How to Fold Athletic Shorts

Athletic shorts come in different materials— polyester, nylon, and other fabrics which are often flimsy and sometimes bulky. Depending on the pair, it can be hard to get them to sit the way you would like. The best way to fold basketball shorts may differ from running shorts due to size, but the technique is generally the same.

  1. If your shorts have an elastic waist or are bunched up by the drawstring, undo the string and flatten it out as much as possible. Tie the drawstring in a loose knot so you don’t lose it in the depths of the waistband.
  2. Align your shorts on one leg and tuck in the crotch area.
  3. Take the bottom of the legs and fold them to just below the waistband.
  4. Fold them once again, this time lining the bottom end up with the waistband.

How to Fold Dressy Shorts

When looking at how to fold shorts of this kind, the aim should be to reduce creasing as much as possible.

  1. Button the waistband.
  2. Shake the shorts out before placing them down.
  3. Lay them out flat, with the front side facing up.
  4. Fold one leg over the over, making sure to line up the short’s legs so that seams remain on the outside.
  5. If the seat or crotch area sticks out, fold it over the legs of the shorts. Tucking it in will lead to bunching and extra wrinkling.
  6. Fold the shorts in half lengthwise. If they are short, one fold is enough. But you can fold longer shorts into thirds.

How to Fold Shorts for Travel

When you're traveling, the less space your clothes take up, the better. This is why people love the rolling method of folding for a travel bag. This method works especially well for shorts.

  1. Lay out the shorts after shaking them out to smoothen.
  2. Roll them out from the waistband to the leg opening, making sure to avoid bunching and wrinkles by smoothing them out as you go.

Folding Tips

As we mentioned before, how to fold shorts to save space depends a lot on the size and style of the pair. Apart from using the appropriate technique, you can take some steps to ensure a neat fold.

  1. While you may want to get a perfect rectangle by tucking in the part that protrudes from the seat, be mindful of the material and creasing. Thick materials can lead to extra bulk, which takes up more space in the closet, while other materials will end up with an ugly crease.
  2. Always smooth out your shorts before folding them.
  3. Shaking out your shorts helps to make the process easier.
  4. Always make sure to close buttons, whether at the crotch or pockets, before folding.

How to Create the Most Space Folding

The standard practice of stacking clothes in your wardrobe is one of the least optimized for storage space. This is where the popular “Konmari Method” comes into play. Popularized by Japanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo, this method is a simple space optimization technique that vertically arranges your clothes in a file, as opposed to stacking them on top of one other. You’ll also make it easier to take your shorts out without distorting the rest of the arrangement.

If you choose to stack your folded shorts, place them with the waistbands facing opposite directions to offset some of the bulk.

Slamdunk Journal :: Sports shorts: what to look for

Which sports shorts are right for you.

Which sports shorts are right for you.

What to look for when choosing shorts in the first place?

There are so many different options for shorts in the collections of sports brands today, so choosing at first can be difficult. The first thing to think about when choosing men's or women's shorts is the destination.

Most sports shorts for fitness are form-fitting. They are wrinkle-free and made with flat seams, which minimizes discomfort during training. These shorts are made from elastic and hypoallergenic synthetic materials.

The ideal shorts for basketball opposite - as loose and light as possible. It is from this simple element of a sports wardrobe that the maneuverability of an athlete when dribbling depends. Too tight or form-fitting may restrict the movement of the leg muscles, which is not acceptable for the player.

Both men's and women's basketball shorts have the same cut: narrow elasticated waist with wide legs. Unlike fitness shorts, they don't have to be too short and don't have pockets. The optimal length is just below the knee. So the fabric covers the heated ligaments and joints of the legs, protecting them from sudden cooling. When choosing basketball shorts, it is permissible to take a model one size larger, which cannot be done when choosing tight and even more so compression underwear.

Material matters: what else to look for when choosing?

When choosing shorts and sportswear, we often come across a lot of obscure names: Dri-FIT, StayWarm, HyperCool and others. All this is the name of materials production technologies.

Most modern sports shorts are made from high-tech synthetic fibers. And these innovative materials have many significant advantages over natural fabrics, such as those that absorb sweat well, stick to the body and become heavier because of this, causing discomfort.

Modern synthetic materials such as polyester, microfiber, elastane, viscose and others are lighter and more comfortable for sports. In addition, they provide better breathability, maintain the temperature of muscles and ligaments, and accelerate the evaporation of sweat, which ensures comfort during training. An important advantage is that modern sports synthetics have high strength, retain color and good condition after many washes, and clothes made from such materials do not stretch, shrink or change shape, which is also an argument in its favor.

How to choose basketball shorts for children?

The choice of sportswear for children is practically no different from the choice of clothing for adults, but there are a few nuances that are worth paying attention to.

The first one is hypoallergenic. Children's skin is more sensitive to materials. Natural fabrics can cause allergies with prolonged and intense contact. The form of modern synthetic materials does not cause such an unpleasant reaction of the body.

The second important quality is softness. Things should be pleasant to the touch and should not rub or cause irritation during prolonged intense contact. Properly sized synthetic shorts for basketball or fitness are devoid of such unpleasant disadvantages.

The most popular materials for children's sports shorts are false mesh, microfiber and polyester fiber based fabrics.

When choosing a material, cut and manufacturer, remember that shorts, like sportswear, are not only an element of style, but also an important part of a comfortable, enjoyable and productive workout.

How to fold clothes so that they take up less space in the closet

November 19, 2016Tips

One of the main secrets of order in the house is neatly and correctly folded things. They take up little space, and your shelves look like they stepped out of the pages of Ikea advertising booklets. Spending a few hours putting your closet in order will save you a lot of time in the future, as you will instantly find the right thing.

1. Short socks

Fold the socks together, then in half and then in half again. With the cuff of one of the socks, wrap both socks, sealing their friendship forever.

2. Long socks

Fold the socks together and in half, then three. Wrap the cuff of one of your socks over both.

3. Women's panties

Lay the panties in front of you, fold them in half, then three times, folding the sides. Now fold your panties in half again.

4. Men's loose briefs or shorts

Lay the shorts face down on the table. Fold in three. Then fold in half and in half again.

5. Jeans

Fold the legs together, then fold in the corner. Fold the jeans in half so that the leg ends reach the bottom of the waistband. Fold it into thirds and put it in the closet so that you can see the pocket, by which, when searching for the right pair, you can determine which jeans it is (if you have several pieces of the same color).

6. T-shirt

You have probably already seen this method called “How to instantly fold a T-shirt”. However, not everyone succeeds in repeating this trick from the first and even from the fifth time. The result is a disappointment in the method.

Try to do everything slowly and thoughtfully. The basis of the method is three points on a T-shirt:

1 — the top of the T-shirt, approximately the middle of the shoulder;
2 - the middle of the T-shirt, on the same line as the first dot;
3 - the bottom of the T-shirt is in line with the first dot.

Lay the T-shirt in front of you, pinch the fabric at points 1 and 2. Then align point 1 with point 3. Carefully consider what position your hands should be in during this action.

Pull point 2 to the side and gently shake the T-shirt as you lift it to straighten any wrinkles. Fold the T-shirt lengthwise so that the second sleeve is at the bottom, and then in half.

Polo shirts can be folded in the same way.

7. Shirt

Lay the buttoned shirt right side out on the table.
