How to gain confidence in shooting basketball

8 Ways to Increase Confidence

One of the biggest things that is required to become a great shooter in basketball is CONFIDENCE.

It gets thrown around constantly from coaches, parents, teammates, and fans: "Shoot it with confidence."

During shooting slumps, it's constantly recited: "He/she needs to get their confidence back."

It sounds so simple, but building and maintaining confidence doesn't come out of thin air. It has to be built though hard work, discipline, and attention to detail.

That being said, here are 8 things all shooters can do to constantly increase confidence in their shot.

1. Start by Making Form Shots

If you've been following us, you probably notice that we're a broken record when it comes to form shooting. But we can't emphasize it enough. If done properly and focused, form shooting not only helps with building mechanics but it can significantly help shooters mentally as they constantly see the ball go through the hoop.

The next time you hit the court, I challenge you to spend 5-10 minutes focusing specifically on form shooting and working your way back. I guarantee after that quick session, you'll be more confident shooting the ball from all over the court.

2. Constantly visualize Makes

This is something all players can do away from the court. When you're thinking of previous games/practices/workouts, CONSTANTLY play back the shots you made. Remember the situation, your form, release, and ultimately how the ball entered the hoop.

Also, I recommend visualizing success of upcoming games. Imagine yourself coming off a screen, catching and knocking down a shot. Imagine yourself driving to the hoop and pulling up for a made jumper. The more you envision makes, the more confident you'll become.

3. Watch and Analyze Film

This takes visualization to the next level. If you have access to your game film, go through and watch all of the shots you made. Instantly your confidence will go up after watching these shots. Don't be shy on rewinding and watching them over and over again.

For the shots you miss, analyze why. Were you off balance? Did you not hold your follow through? Was it not a good shot? This can go for when you train as well.

4. Always Catch Ready to shoot

This is something rather simple but can do wonders for your confidence. By having hands ready, getting feet ready as the ball is in the air, and being 100% ready to shoot when catching the ball will help increase confidence and ensure you're completely prepared to knock down a jump shot.

This goes for games and training. During shooting workouts, you have all the time in the world to get your shot off and there's no defensive pressure. That's a big reason why players aren't as confident in a game situation - it's much more chaotic. It's essential to train game-like situations to translate into actual games.

5. Only Take Quality Shots

Shot selection is critical at all levels. Understanding what a good shot is for you and executing those shots in a game will help raise your confidence. On the other hand, taking bad shots will only cause you to second guess yourself and decrease your confidence.

6. Stop Being Afraid of Misses

This goes hand in hand with the last point. Once you know what a good shot is for you, shoot those shots with 100% confidence. Understanding that you won't hit every shot is essential, though you should EXPECT every shot you take to go in.

While being afraid to miss shots may stem from coaches or teammates, it's important to have open communication on what a quality shot is. Once that is established, there's no need to fear misses.

7. Track Progress and Improvement

At Dr. Dish we love the old saying, "You can't improve what you can't measure."

This is especially true when it comes to shooting. It's hard to build confidence if you're not sure you're improving. Once you establish a baseline, set goals, and reach them, your confidence will skyrocket.

The Dr. Dish Training Management System is so powerful when tracking progress and improvement. Here you can check out workout trends, overall leaderboards, leaderboards by workout, and more. This is a tremendous tool to build confidence and ensure your hard work is paying off.

8. Get GAme-Like REPS REPS REPS

Last but certainly not least...you HAVE to get up consistent, purposeful, and game-like reps if you want to build TRUE confidence. While the 7 things above can help with building mental strength and provide a solid foundation, they won't be nearly as effective if you don't get up reps.

Of course, there's no better way to get up purposeful reps than with Dr. Dish basketball shooting machines. There are no shortcuts to greatness!

We hope you can implement these 8 tips to improve your shooting confidence. At Dr. Dish we're passionate and dedicated to building better shooters and complete players.

How to Develop Supreme Basketball Shooting Confidence (Required to Become a Great Shooter)

By Jeff Haefner

Home > Player > Basketball Skills > Shooting > How to Develop Supreme Basketball Shooting Confidence (Required to Become a Great Shooter)

Just ask any shooting coach or expert about the importance of confidence...

They will all tell you that confidence can be the difference between an AVERAGE shooter and a GREAT shooter. Confidence will greatly improve your shooting percentage!

So how do you develop supreme and unwavering shooting confidence?

Here are three few extremely effective techniques:

  1 - GROOVING

Before every practice and game, face the basket and shoot 50 EASY shots about four to ten feet from the basket.

Not only does this improve your shooting form, but it helps to develop phenomenal confidence.

How?

You'll quickly become very good at grooving these shots over and over. You'll see the ball going in the basket over and over. You'll swish the ball repeatedly and probably shoot 60%, 70%, 80%, or more, which is great for your psyche.

Simply by seeing your shot go in over an over, you'll become more confident.

Why do you think that NBA players do this before games?

Why do you think that Tiger Woods starts all of his practice sessions by making 100 three-foot putts?

Because it works! So don't overlook this powerful strategy.

2 - CHARTING

This is another technique that you should NOT overlook!

Lots of coaches talk about it, but we give credit to Dave Hopla for helping us realize the power of charting. He has been preaching it for years.

To improve your confidence, start charting all of the shots that you take in practice. It's easy to do and you'll be absolutely amazed at how much it helps.

After every practice session, keep track of what kinds of shots you took, the number of shots taken and the number of shots that you actually made.

Why does this help?

It seems so trivial, but the greatest shooters in the world have discovered this secret and will all tell you the same answer.

Their chart continually reminds them of how great they are. They can see on paper that they shot 65% for all of their 10 foot jumpers. They can see that they shot 90% for free throws.

Then what happens?

You start believing both at a conscious and deep subconscious level that you're an awesome shooter!

And you have the proof right there on paper. It shows you that you've made thousands of shots. And you won't soon forget how to shoot because you've done this thousands of times and you can knock 'em down!

Take our advice. Start charting your shots, especially the shots that you groove.

The chart doesn't need to be complicated. It just needs to make sense to you and be easy for you to carry around, like a notebook, journal, or a binder.

Here's a simple example of a shooting chart, but you should come up with one that makes sense to you:

DateShot TypeAttemptsMakesPercentage
3/21/2008Form shooting504080%
3/21/20086' grooves503876%
3/21/200812' catch & shoot1006262%
3/21/2008Free throws10880%

3 - PRACTICE

This alludes to an obvious technique to improve your confidence...

Practice!

We all know that practice improves confidence.

If you're reluctant to shoot, not confident, and hesitant, then you're probably going to miss. Even though confidence is the mark of a great shooter, you can't invent confidence out of thin air. It has to be based on some evidence and experience.

This comes from practice. You will be able to relax and shoot with a confidence that has been earned.

No tricks or tactics here. You just need to get it done. For a little motivation, you might want to recruit a good partner. You can also set goals. Do whatever it takes. A high school player should be taking around 500 shots a day and charting them all.

We suggest that you implement all of the techniques above. You should groove your shots every day, chart your shots, and practice ALL the time.

Exercises for individual training

Players' actions on the field are aimed at getting the opportunity to perform a throw around the ring, therefore this element is one of the most important in the preparation of athletes. The coach should know well what shortcomings should be corrected, what to pay special attention to, how to dose the loads. As a result of control throws carried out with the player, a suitable method for throwing the ball around the ring is determined for the athlete.

Not only physical abilities are taken into account, but even the character of a person. And then - work on the technique, the athlete literally needs to bring the throw to the ideal and “memorize” it to such an extent that on the field without hesitation to throw the projectile around the ring correctly.

Technique

Throws have differences, for example, in one, both hands are involved, in the other, one hand. The method of execution can be very different: there is a jump throw, on the spot, throwing a projectile on the move, using a fake move, and also at a distance from the ring.

By the way! A throw at a distance from the ring, or a three-pointer has three options: close up to 3 meters from the target, medium from 3 to 5 meters and far, performed behind the line (6. 25m).

Ring throw training also differs in how many people participate in them: the athlete is alone, or in the company of teammates (training in pairs, triples, etc.), or maybe a mannequin or a bench serves as a kind of opponent.

But there is a need for live opponents precisely because the players can be in the psychological state that is present on the field in a real confrontation.

It would be right to start training with throws at short distances. Ideal would be 1.5-2 meters. Moreover, the throws should be clear, you need to make sure that the ball does not touch the ring itself, but passes exactly in the middle.

In addition to playing equipment, a chair can be useful, on which a beginner will climb to control the accuracy of throws. Gradually, the coach should increase the distance to the ring and put the basketball player in positions familiar to the technician.

For the throw to be the most accurate, it is necessary to bring the execution of the technique to automaticity without any errors and be confident in yourself and your movements. Also, practicing a confident confrontation with the players of the other team will be in your favor.

Important! Setting up a correct throw should be dealt with primarily with beginners, as correcting mistakes is more difficult for both the coach and the athlete. Therefore, it is best to immediately teach how to perform the throw correctly. Significantly helps in this watching videos, or programs with throws around the ring from NBA players, Russian and Latvian basketball players. It is also useful to consolidate what you see in practice.

The influence of idols on beginners

And if the player has the opportunity to see the competition live, he will be able to feel and understand the atmosphere in which he will be.

It will be great to see a throw from a famous athlete, or from a coach who himself is able to demonstrate the correct setting of the hands, or the position of parts of the body, body. But the main advantage of the coach is how well he can notice errors in the throwing technique and how quickly and efficiently he will help to correct the shortcomings.

Often people get interested in basketball even at the stage of watching programs. Then, if a person decides to devote himself to sports, he begins to imitate his idol. This, in turn, will help the coach in preparation, as the beginner will also copy the techniques for performing certain throws. The advantage is that the player will be able to acquire an accurate shot faster.

In general, there are 7 types of shots in basketball, but we will talk about the main and most used by both beginners and experienced snipers.

Jump shot

Basically, all attacks on the opponent's basket are made using the jump shot technique. This method is not bad when hitting the ring from a certain distance.

This attack can be performed in three stages.

First stage: the player receives the ball. Be sure to capture the ball in motion, as otherwise a violation is counted.

Second stage: the athlete stops, stepping forward with the left foot and following with the right foot. With the main hand, the ball is carried over the head, and the auxiliary holds it to the side. When jumping, the push is made by two legs at the same time.

Basketball element technique: is somewhat similar to a free throw. First, the auxiliary hand is removed, and the ball is reversed with the fingers of the main (strong hand).

Third stage: the athlete moves forward with his body and lands on his feet about 20-30 cm further than the point from which he took off. This is necessary so that when landing, you do not collide with an opponent who has approached to protect his ring.

Tip! How accurate the throw will be depends on the ability of the athlete to maintain balance in the jump and on how exactly the torso and head are located. Therefore, the player needs to direct his entire body upwards after kicking. Head held straight, look at ring before landing.

Pay attention to the fact that the jump shot is performed with a kind of "freeze", this is done by professional snipers, but of course there is no hang. The player simply stands at their highest point of the jump and then shoots. This is necessary in order not to give extra momentum to the ball.

Double shots

Any good basketball shooter is a treasure. In order to become a good sniper, you need a great desire, as well as constant self-improvement: a professional coach, as well as many years of training, including at a game pace.

The intensity of the throws must be comparable to the game. It turns out that 1,000 sluggish, relaxed throws will be less effective than 100 made at a game pace, because. the first in a real match will simply not be allowed to be carried out by the defender of the other team.

So one of the effective ways to work out the technique of throws is throws in pairs.

Here are some drills to work on these throws:

Drill 1. Throw and rebound

It is performed at a distance of 4 meters from the ring. To start, one of the players makes a clear pass from under the basket, and then moves towards the player who has caught the ball. He, in turn, makes a throw on the basket and moves to the ring. That is, the pair simply replace each other at the game pace, but the throws must be clear.

Drill 2. Shot and rebound resulting in

Performed the same as above, except that the passer under the hoop must not only move beyond the three-point line, but must also try to prevent the other player from taking the shot, as the defender would. . The passer, in order to become the thrower, must miss 5 throws around the ring in an honest confrontation, then the players change places.

Exercise 3. Fraudulent throw

Here, a feint is added to the second exercise. That is, while the player who made the transfer of the ball is trying to prevent the attacker from making a pass, he tricks the defender into distracting himself and then makes a throw.

The exercise is repeated five times, and then the pair of players change positions.

Exercise 4 . Move followed by shot

Defender passes while attacker moves at playing pace on the court, then the latter stops, catches the ball and shoots. This is repeated 7 times, then 2 free throws are made and the players switch places.

However, this exercise can be done in three different ways, or you can include three in your workouts at once:

  • attacker catches the ball and immediately throws it;
  • the attacker performs a fake throw, dribbles the ball without changing direction and throws;
  • everything is the same as in the previous one, but the direction changes after the feint.

Exercise 5.

This is not an exercise in the usual sense, because it uses all kinds of dribbling techniques and a jump shot. That is, the attacker first runs to the opposite edge of the field, receives the ball. The choice of the leading hand depends on the side on which the athlete is dribbling. So, the right hand leads on the right, and the left hand leads on the left.

The variety lies in the fact that you can change the pace, make transfers and generally try to feel the part of the gameplay, consisting of the confrontation between the attacker and the defender. Using the learned techniques, the player will be able to understand what tactics to choose in a given situation.

Double shots: pass and discount

There are two players per team, but there may be one defender, or there may be no defenders at all.

Through the center of the field, the attacker moves towards the ring so that the second defender pays attention to him, and then passes the ball to another attacker from the flank.

The passer catches the ball and throws it into the basket. The passer then picks it up and hands it to the thrower. So they switch roles. In training, 10 throws are usually performed for each.

To diversify the workout, you can add exercises starting from the flank and corner of the court.

Shooting training for centers and power forwards

If you make a list of the most used shots by centers and power forwards, you get the following:

  • hook shot The throw is made by spinning the hand that is farthest from the basket. This is a great way to shoot the ball at short (close) distances, and the hand located between the attacker and the defender becomes an obstacle for trying to interfere with the throw;
  • jump hook (translated as a hook during a jump) - the attacker is half-turned to the ring, the throw is made with the hand farthest from the ring. The half-hook is good because you can use it after stepping or turning;
  • pacing and then throwing - different executions, the player can use pacing after catching the ball bouncing off the backboard or basket, or simply while dribbling. It is used both in the position of the back to the ring, and the face. It is especially useful to perform various throws after pacing during training, this helps to develop the vestibular apparatus and improve coordination;
  • medium throws (3-6.5 meters from the backboard) or short distance with both hands from the top of the head, while the arms are first bent at the elbow, the hands are approximately opposite the forehead, and then straighten in the throw. This is a classic that Tim Duncan loves to use in the game. Having received the ball, he makes a deceptive movement, the body and leg are involved, the player seems to go into the pass, and then throws the ball into the ring.

Here are some examples of favorite offensive techniques for centers and power forwards.

Same Tim Duncan (NBA player) uses one-handed turnaround throw . That is, while in the penalty area or the post area, he makes a turn with his back to the basket, bounces slightly, and then performs a throw with one hand. If the throw is performed with the left hand, then the turn goes to the right side and vice versa.

Step back (Carmelo Anthony, NBA) is performed from the middle of the post. The player receives the ball, turns around to face a defender, so the attacker steps forward, hits the ball on the floor, catches it, and then pulls back to shoot at the basket, thereby deceiving the defender.

Marc Gasol (NBA) quick turn over the back - the player goes further from the basket, slightly to the right or left of it, and at the moment when the defender starts to guard him, catching the ball, the attacker quickly makes a turn through the back, hits and comes to the basket. Then the throw is made.

To sum up all of the above, for excellent center and power forwards, the most important thing is to shoot from the penalty area and around the perimeter. Therefore, more time is devoted to training these techniques. In general, the number of throws per workout is individual, since the main thing is not to perform until you get tired, but to work out the movements correctly.

Shooting training for small forwards, attacking guards in point guards

There will be less recommendations here, as programs for practicing shooting are quite enough and they can suit most players in these positions.

But a few tips are still worth considering:

It is better to start practicing throws not in motion, as in the previous positions, but vice versa - in a static position. You can stand at the side of the penalty area and perform five to ten shots with a hit on the basket.

Then you just need to move around the edge of the penalty area and shoot from different positions. When this zone is mastered, you can stand between the penalty and three-point lines and repeat everything from new positions.

It is also worth going through all the positions indicated in the figure below and learning how to throw from them.

If it's hard, you can reduce the number of hits on the ring.

In general, you can throw three-pointers from anywhere, but what is indicated in the picture is the minimum that is worth working out. Then work on dribbling, jump shots, and stopping.

Such a training technique is needed in order to work out both throws at the moment when no one interferes with throwing the ball, and those performed at a game pace.

Basketball Shot Training Summary

If you are hoping to find a ready-made training program on the Internet, you need to understand that it will not work without adaptation to your personal qualities - physical fitness, flexibility, punching power, leading hand, psychological characteristics, game position and style. There are many factors that can be the reason why a ready-made workout is not suitable.

Tip that any coach will give is to learn to play with both hands. This does not mean that it is necessary to be able to throw the ball in any technique with both the right and left hand. It’s enough just to learn how to turn around after the pass and throw the ball into the ring using a non-main hand so that the defender does not have time to interfere.

As has been said several times before, the main goal of training is not the number of throws, but the quality. So the main mistake is to do it without focusing on your movements, but to throw the ball in a relaxed way just to throw it. Play as if the final at the Olympic Games depends on you.

Conclusion

This article is just an indication of the direction in which you should move in order to improve your throwing technique. Productive training!

Learn how to throw the ball correctly in basketball: throw technique

Everything is important in basketball: dribbling, passing, tackle. But all this is not enough if there is no effective finishing blow to the ring. It is the final score that determines the winning team. There are plenty of stars in the NBA who don't rely on conventional shooting techniques. These are Rick Barry, Joaquim Noah, Sean Marion and others. But then they are stars. We will try to figure out what really attracts basketball, how to throw the ball into the ring correctly.

What a beginner player should know

Throwing techniques should be learned at an early stage of training. If you do not pay enough attention to this, you will have to relearn, and this is always more difficult. Accuracy directly depends on the technical component, which must be brought to automatism. Stability allows you to gain confidence, courage and the ability to resist the enemy.

Training starts from a short distance - one and a half to two meters. You can use additional equipment by performing throws from a sitting position and standing on a chair. After the young player learns to accurately hit the target without touching the arches of the ring, the distance should be increased.

One of the most contact sports is basketball. How to throw the ball into the ring, if you do not take into account the actions of the defenders? That is why you should practice hitting:

  • in game pairs or triples of players;
  • in conditions of passive and active resistance of the enemy;
  • in a state of fatigue or psychological stress.

Types of shots

Fans of spectacular ball play know that players can throw with both two and one hands. In the course of a match of any professional club, you can see how the attackers do it from a place or on the move. They score after passing, faking, jumping, sometimes flying over the backboard above the basket and pushing the ball from above. The legendary Michael Jordan, who did this especially spectacularly, was even nicknamed "His Airiness".

Depending on the distance to the game board, throws are divided into long, medium and close. The latter are carried out at a distance of up to 3 m from the basket. The indicator of a long-range shot is a mark of 6.25 m, after which the team is awarded not two, but three points for each hit.

How to learn to throw the ball in basketball into the hoop from different positions? To do this, you need to master the technique of basic throws. There are six of them:

  • From below with two hands.
  • From below with one hand.
  • Standing with both hands.
  • Standing with one hand.
  • Jump shot.
  • Hook throw.

Throwing from below

How to throw the ball in basketball from below? First, let's take a look at the player's stance:

  1. Foot position: shoulder width position. It is not necessary that both feet are on the same line, the left or right can be slightly pushed forward. The legs are slightly bent at the knees. Both socks are directed towards the ring. Body weight is distributed evenly over the balls of the feet. The heels touch the floor, but do not press against it.
  2. Body: back straight, shoulders back, elbows relaxed and slightly bent. The head is raised, the player's gaze is directed to the basket.
  3. Grip the ball: only with the fingers. The palms do not participate in the throw. The ball is held below the belt line at a fairly close distance to the body. The thumbs are directed towards the basket, the rest are looking down.

Movement during hit:

  • If a player is taking a free kick, a preliminary movement is often used. During it, the ball rises to chest level, and the legs straighten, after which the basketball player takes the starting position and begins to throw at the same pace.
  • The ball is again lifted up and forward while straightening the legs. As soon as the arms become parallel to the floor, the player releases the ball with the fingers and hands, giving it a reverse rotational motion. At the same time, the hands seem to accompany the throw, the back is straight, the heels come off the parquet.

With one hand, players score exclusively from under the basket during the fight at the backboard. In this case, the ball is given spin, which the attackers must take into account when preparing to hit the target.

Throwing from the spot

When beginners ask about how to throw the ball in basketball from the head, you need to understand that we are talking about hitting from a place. Such a throw is performed from two positions, the second - from the chest. This technique is used when you need to hit a target from a long distance. What is its fundamental difference?

Let's consider the throw from the head. As in the first case, the player must take a stable position, lifting the ball to a level just below the chin. It must be kept at a distance of 30 cm from the body. The elbows are pressed to the body. The throw is performed with the simultaneous extension of the arms and legs. The ball is given rotation with the thumbs along the trajectory up and down. As a result, it will fly towards the target with reverse rotation.

When throwing with one hand, remember that the height to which the ball is carried is determined by the player himself. If he is attacked by a defender, then his chances are increased if he is able to throw over his head.

In a jump

This is the most difficult element of the game, in which it is most difficult for the defender to repel the attack. He needs to predict the actions of the sniper in order to block. Not all professionals know how to throw in a jump. It is used at close range from the ring, although there are legendary athletes who hit the target from the eight-meter mark.

What is the correct way to throw the ball in basketball if there is an opponent in front of you? The answer is unequivocal: in a jump.

The player is pushed off with both feet, both from a place and with a turn of the body in the direction of travel. The throw involves not only fingers, hands, but also hands. It is they who, when straightened, give accuracy to flight. A very important element is the moment of hovering in the air. It is necessary to perform a prepared throw designed to hit the target.

Hook Throw

What is the correct way to throw the ball in basketball after dribbling? One of the most effective elements of the game is the hook throw. It is often used from medium distances, which is very important during the game.
