How to get unc basketball tickets

Three Ways to Get Tickets to UNC Games

It’s true that UNC teams have produced their fair share of champions over the years – many people associate the university with sports as much as anything else. There are a ton of opportunities to watch athletics at this Division I school that’s won 49 NCAA championships between its 28 varsity programs. Here’s how you can get that chance:

1    Call the UNC Athletic Ticket Office at 919-962-2296 or visit goheels.com. For most Carolina events, getting a ticket is as easy as showing up when the game is about to begin. Admission for all regular season events is free for the following UNC sports: cross country, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, women’s lacrosse, rowing, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball and wrestling. Boshamer Stadium (baseball) and Carmichael Arena (women’s basketball and volleyball) are both fantastic places to watch a game. The field hockey team now has their own on-campus facility while a new soccer and lacrosse complex is stunning. For football and men’s basketball, tickets go on sale months in advance of the season, with in-conference and rivalry games selling out in a matter of days.

2    Show up early on game day. If you missed the dates for ticket sales and the game you want to attend is sold out, try getting to the venue a few hours early. Occasionally, if you’re lucky, the ticket office will be selling a few remaining seats. If there’s inclement weather during basketball season, season ticket holders who live far away might not be able to make it into town and will turn their tickets in. That’s one of the best times to try to get tickets in addition to the early-in-the-season games when students are on winter break in December and January.

3    Join the Rams Club. This group of UNC boosters gets first priority for season tickets in football and for individual game tickets and mini-season packages in basketball. After a certain gift level, members are guaranteed season tickets. Hey, it’s not cheap, but there’s a certain peace of mind knowing you’ll be there when UNC beats Duke. And did you know there’s a Carolina Kids Club? Kids can get a shirt, lanyard and credentials, special event invitations and more.

GETTING TO GAMES
Chapel Hill Transit provides Tar Heel Express shuttle service from the park and rides located at Friday Center, Southern Village, Airport Drive (103 Airport Drive, Chapel Hill) and Jones Ferry. Shuttles will also be available from Carolina Coffee Shop located at 138 E. Franklin St. (no parking provided).

The shuttles provide continuous and fully accessible service, running every 10 to 15 minutes between the park and rides and the Dean E. Smith Center or Kenan Stadium. The shuttles will operate for approximately 45 minutes following the game. Shuttle rides are $5 for a round-trip or $3 for a one-way trip.

GOOD TO KNOW
The UNC Department of Athletics has implemented a clear bag policy at Kenan Stadium and the Dean E. Smith Center designed to reduce wait times for fans. Fans are encouraged to leave all bags at home, but the following items will be allowed into Kenan Stadium and the Smith Center:

• Any clear plastic or vinyl bag no larger than 12” x 6” x 12”, including gallon freezer bags.
• Small clutch purses no larger than 4.5” x 6.5”.
• Necessary medical items following inspection at entry gates

UNC Tar Heels at Dean Smith Center

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is home to one of the most successful college basketball programs of all time. The UNC Tar Heels play at the Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center, more commonly known as "The Dean Dome." The arena first opened in 1986 and currently seats 21,750. They are coached by Roy Williams, who was previously an assistant under Dean Smith before achieving success at Kansas and returning to UNC in 2003. The Tar Heels have won seven national championships, including three under Williams in 2005, 2009 and 2017.

UNC Tar Heels Men's Basketball History

The University of North Carolina first fielded a men's basketball team in 1910, and achieved success early on, joining the Southern Conference upon its founding in 1921. In 1924, Norman Shepard coached UNC to an undefeated record and their first (retroactive) national championship in his only season at Chapel Hill. In 1953, UNC was among seven programs to splinter from the SoCon to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. UNC won their first tournament championship under Frank McGuire in 1957, capping off an undefeated season with a triple-overtime upset over Wilt Chamberlain and Kansas. Dean Smith replaced McGuire in 1961, transforming North Carolina from an already successful program into a national power before retiring in 1997. Smith's "four corners" offense emphasized ball control and, as college basketball did not have a shot clock until the ‘80s, managed to shut down teams completely in close contests. James Worthy led the Tar Heels to the 1982 national championship, with the legendary Michael Jordan hitting the game-winning shot against Georgetown to clinch it.

UNC has many local and national rivals, but the most contentious and bitter by far is with Duke University. The two schools first played each other in 1920 when Duke was still known as Trinity College, and their proximity in distance (just 10 miles down Tobacco Road) and in conference fostered the competition. The two schools have combined for 12 national championships, with North Carolina having the slight edge in both titles and head-to-head record. In 2019, UNC beat Duke twice, defeating the No. 1 Blue Devils in their first meeting, before losing 74-73 in the ACC conference tournament. UNC went on to get a No. 1 seed in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, falling to eventual national semifinalist Auburn in the Sweet 16.
