How to make a basketball return

The Best Basketball Return Systems of 2022

When I was a kid, I spent many hours shooting hoops in the driveway of my parent’s house. This driveway wasn’t exactly a regulation-sized basketball court: the front end of the sidewalk was our free-throw line, there were walls on each side of the narrow driveway, and the cobbled pavement was slanted significantly towards the street. Forget about working on your dribbling in these conditions!

But it turns out that the slanted driveway was a huge plus for working on my free throws. I could spend hours shooting the ball, and if I swished a shot the ball would automatically return to me. I only recognized this advantage later when I was shooting hoops on a perfectly even basketball court – rebounding my misses significantly reduced the number of shots I could get up in an hour!

That’s where basketball return systems come into play. They will rebound your made shots (and some will rebound your misses too) and help you to maximize the number of shot attempts you can take.

In this article, I am going to explain the differences between various types of basketball return machines and show you which one will work best for you.

As you can see, there are many different types of basketball return machines on the market. But how do you find the perfect one for you? There are a couple of questions you should ask yourself:

Do you miss a lot of shots?

The most basic and affordable rebounding systems like the Spalding Back Atcha are attached to the bottom of the ring and only change the direction of basketballs that are actually falling through the net. – you still need to rebound misses yourself!

If you are making 90% of your free throws, this won’t pose much of a problem, but if you are still a beginner, rebounding systems like that won’t help you much.

More advanced basketball return nets will also rebound shots that bounce off the ring, but if you want a system that returns 100% of your shots you will need to invest in a more professional basketball return machine like the iC3 Basketball Shot Trainer .

Do you want to work on your corner three?

A lot of return systems will always return the basketball towards the free throw line no matter where you shot from. If you want to work on your corner three, that’s counterproductive as you need to run towards the middle of the court after every shot!

If you’re going to work on your bank shot take a look at the SKLZ Kick-Out 360 or the iC3 Basketball Shot Trainer that allow you to adjust the direction of the rebound.

The Top 5 Basketball Return Systems:

Spalding Back Atcha

The Spalding Back Atcha is probably the most affordable basketball return system on the market. It is made from thick plastic and comes with two hooks that attach to the back of the rim. If you make a shot, the basketball will hit the plastic structure after passing the net and will be kicked slightly towards the free-throw line.

The success rate of this mechanism varies somewhere between 50% – 95%, depending on the length and material of your net (nylon or metal?) and how well the plastic hooks attach to the hoop. However, don’t expect long shots to be returned all the way to the three-point line. Also, the rebound of the ball will always go towards the middle of the court which can be annoying if you are shooting from an angle.

Overall, the Spalding Back Atcha is a very affordable basketball return system that you can attach to most hoops within seconds. While it doesn’t do a perfect job of returning made shots and won’t return misses at all, it will still allow you to save a lot of time. Chasing down the rebound after every second shot is still much better than running every time!

The SKLZ 360 works very similarly to the Spalding Back Atcha presented before, but the mechanism is a bit more complex and versatile.

The installation is pretty simple: If you own an height-adjustable basketball hoop you just lower the hoop and clip the four hooks to the rim. Otherwise, you will probably need a small ladder unless you’re 7ft tall.

The chute of the SKLZ 360 hangs about 28 inches below the rim and does a great job of returning the ball. The best feature of this chute is the fact that you can rotate it by 360 degrees! This way you can get the basketball returned no matter where you are shooting from. Small kids will not be able to do this on a 10ft hoop, but anybody taller than 5’8″ should be able to do it without a ladder or lowering the hoop.

The quality of the SKLZ 360 is a lot better than the Spalding Back Atcha, but some people still report that the chute might change direction on its own and that the plastic hooks won’t last forever. However, you should be able to fix these issues with a little bit of duct tape and metal wire ties.

Overall, this is a basketball return system with much-improved functionality that I can recommend if you are looking for something you can attach and detach easily. The only downside: it doesn’t rebound missed shots.

Goaliath Basketball Return Net

Goaliath is known for producing high-quality in-ground basketball hoops but they also sell accessories that make the life of basketball players easier.

This basketball return system is the first in this article that can rebound missed shots too. That’s especially useful for beginners who are still missing a majority of their attempts.

The installation is pretty simple: You attach the webbing harness to the metal bar at the top of the net and pull this harness over the back of the rim. On the other side, the net is attached to two bags that you can fill with water or sand.

The Goaliath return net especially well if you want to prevent the ball from going into the neighbor’s yard or a thorny bush of roses. However, if you are looking for a system that will replace your buddy passing you the ball while you are moving along the 3-point line, then you better keep looking.

SKLZ Rapid Fire II

The SKLZ Rapid Fire II is comparable to the Goaliath net but comes with one significant difference: the net is attached to two hip height stands. This small change is fantastic because you no longer have to bend down to collect rebounds. Instead, you receive the ball in a much more natural shooting position.

This ball return system easily attaches to the top-left and top-right corner of any metal frame backboard, unfortunately, it won’t work for molded backboards. The net is held by two adjustable metal arms that extend from the top of the backboard. By placing the stands differently and rotating the arms of the net, you can direct the rebounds to different spots on the court. You can also use the net as a ball stop by fully folding back the arms.

Overall, the SKLZ Rapid Fire is a very versatile basketball rebounding system that allows you to get shots up at a much higher frequency because you receive the basketball in a position that comes close to a regular pass in a game.

iC3 Basketball Shot Trainer

The iC3 Basketball Shot Trainer plays in a different league than all the other rebounding systems presented so far. It’s an affordable entry-level model by Dr. Dish Basketball, a well-known company that also builds basketball passing machines that cost thousands of dollars and are used by professional basketball players.

The iC3 is made of a sturdy steel frame that you hang over the back end of the rim and fix to the pole of your basketball hoop. If your basketball hoop doesn’t have a pole, you can still use the iC3 if your backboard is at least 60 inches wide.

The net stretches over the rim and catches almost every missed shot. This design also forces you to shoot with a proper arc and actually improves your technique. The net funnels the ball into a small ramp that you can rotate by 180 degrees to receive rebounds in every position on the court. The rebounding system is not very fast, but if you use two basketballs you can shoot nonstop rapid-fire style!

The iC3 Basketball Shot trainer is by far the most professional rebounding system that is still affordable and doesn’t cost thousands of dollars. If you are an ambitious basketball player and you want to work on your shot, then this is the system to get!

Conclusion

I recommend you to go for the iC3 Basketball Shot Trainer . It’s the most expensive system in this roundup, but also by far the best! It rebounds almost 100% of your shots, you can change the direction of the rebounds, and it even forces you to improve the arc of your shot!

If you are looking for a cheaper option and you are a pretty good shooter, then the SKLZ 360 is a good option too.

If your kids are learning to play basketball in the driveway and you want to prevent the ball from bouncing into the neighbor’s garden then check out the Goaliath Basketball Return Net .

How to Choose a Basketball Return

When training on your own, chasing down the ball between each shot can eat up valuable time. Squeeze more reps into your routine by installing the right ball return for your basketball hoop.

Going after loose basketballs sure does build endurance during practice. But what if you want to specifically work on your shooting skills? You can spend those valuable hours of solo training time working on your free throws or three-pointers more efficiently.

A good basketball return lets you stand in place while the ball rolls back to you, freeing up more time for taking shots. Whether you’re a coach looking to create an efficient, shot-focused environment for your team, or a parent or player trying to find a convenient way to keep your basketballs in your driveway, a basketball return may be exactly what you’re looking for.

But what style is right for you?

YARD GUARD

The yard guard style is a net that sets up behind your basketball hoop. It hugs the baseline and prevents balls from going far out of play. This style does not return your ball when you make a basket, but it does limit how far you’ll need to run to retrieve a shot.

Consider a yard guard to help protect your landscaping, garden or house behind your hoop.

RETURN NET

The second style is a ball return net. It typically hangs from the basket and stretches toward the player, secured to the ground with weight bags, which are normally included.

With a wide area of coverage, it can collect basketballs that go through the hoop or miss by several feet, gracefully rolling them back to a stationary player. For more versatility, find a model that adjusts easily so that you can practice shots from multiple angles.

Keep in mind that return nets may require a lot of space to accommodate their wide coverage area. At their smallest, return nets are around 5but many cover an even wider area. Check the dimensions of your playing space and the return net before making your final decision.

RIM-ATTACHED

A third style, and a significant variation on the previous two, is a rim-attached return system.

Whereas the yard guard and return net helped return missed baskets, this rim-attached style only kicks out sunk shots. If you’re a consistent shot maker, it can be an excellent option. Some models return the ball to a point directly in front of the basket, but other variations rotate, returning the ball to the player wherever the shot was taken.

OTHER FEATURES TO LOOK FOR

All three styles include a range of features and options. The most desirable models are made of durable metal or plastic and offer easy installation, removal and storage, especially for the winter months when you’ll want to keep your ball return or hoop guard safe from inclement weather. Before you buy a ball return, make sure that it pairs with the style of hoop you own — whether you have an in-ground, portable or mounted basketball hoop. This information should be found on the return’s packaging.

Basketball returns and net guards are valuable accessories for any gym or driveway hoop and can help you or your athlete maximize practice time for a more focused, intense session.

Basketball coaching hacks: how to score goals for beginners

Even if you are a novice basketball player, we will not give you a training plan, but we will tell you why the ball flies anywhere but into the ring and into your hands. It's all about technique: even with regular training and perseverance, novice adults and children often make simple mistakes. It's a shame, let's fix it. Below are 11 life hacks on how to hone your technique to increase the likelihood of a goal for your team.

    Basketball Shot Rules for Beginners

    1. Hands up

In pursuit of the attacker, raise your hands, even if you are standing with your back to the pass, and even more so if the ring is in front of you. Your raised hands will increase the chance of intercepting the ball from the opponent by 2 times. Don't overlook this little thing!

    2. Make shield rolls

Even Tim Duncan did not neglect them! A square is drawn on the basketball backboard. If you are standing opposite the ring, then aim at the middle of the upper part of the square, if you are standing on the side, then at the corner. If you hit this square, then the ball is at 90% of cases will fall into the ring. The law of physics and no cheating!

    3. Look at the ring, not at the ball

Practice driving the ball with your hand, not your eyes, develop tactile control. Your eyes should be on the hoop while dribbling and be aware of the position of your body in relation to the hoop. Then you will be able to take the correct posture, and the throw will be effective.

    4. Dribble with the balls of your fingers only

The palm should not touch the ball, only the pads of the fingers. Dribbling should become familiar to you, like an extension of your hand. Then you can change its trajectory at any time and you will have more chances to score goals. Practice with the ball constantly.

    5. Throw with one hand

If you throw the ball with two hands, you reduce the chance of hitting the basket. All the efforts of the throw are in one hand (in the right for right-handers, in the left for left-handers). The other hand only holds the ball, the leading one holds it with the fingers, not the palm.

    6. Do not jump when protecting the ring

Jumping is the main mistake of rookie defenders. To intercept the ball and block the shot, simply stick out your hands. When you are in a jump, the attacker will easily bypass you.

    7. Don't look back

When you dribble, don't look back, but dribble and aim for the ring, focus on shooting (or passing to another player on your team).

    8. Bring the throw to automatism

Incorporate the most basic basketball techniques into your training plan and bring the shot to automatism. Throw first from a distance of half a meter from the ring, gradually increasing it. Learn to throw the ball so that it hits the hoop without touching the edge.

Throw the ball with all fives and jump

    Throwing Rules:

    • Head in the center of the body - if tilted, accuracy is lost.
    • Look at the ring: mentally build a trajectory. If you are far away, the ball flies in a curved curve with a maximum height of 2 meters above the hoop.
    • A strong hand is in front and throws, a weak hand is on the side and directs, only holding the ball. The elbow of the throwing hand must be in line with the ring.
    • The ball must rest on the fingers without touching the palm. The fingers are as far apart as possible and grab the ball.
    • Throwing arm bent 90 degrees, forearm perpendicular to the floor. If you bend less, then you get not a throw, but a throwing of the ball horizontally.

The main thing in the throw is the position of the body and its balance. Place your feet apart and parallel to each other: it is important to orient them in the middle of the basket. Then the direction of the body during the jump will coincide with the direction of the throw, and the ball will fly straight into the ring. When the feet are uneven, the ball flies in the wrong direction or does not reach (although the throw was normal).

Take a deep breath and release as you exhale.

How to hold the ball and shoot in basketball

How to throw correctly: straighten your arm, point your wrist up, and with your hand set the ball to rotate in the opposite direction from the flight. The ball should seem to "roll" off your fingers.

    9. Copy masters and play as a team

Watch professional basketball games and try to copy the movements of your favorite players in training. And be sure to conduct game sparring - this will allow you to develop more techniques.

    10. Do not throw in a straight line

The higher the arc of the ball, the greater the chance of a goal and the less chance of blocking by the opponent.

    11. Do not throw the ball from a full height stand

This is the biggest newbie mistake!

Before the throw, bend your knees slightly and at the moment of the throw, straighten your body, making a jump. You need to straighten up and push off the ground at the same time. When squatting, keep the elbow of the throwing arm close to the body and towards the ring.

The jump will give momentum to the ball and will allow you not to make sudden movements with the brush.

    ***

And to be a long-term player, do not forget about your health: take care of your joints and muscles, use tapes, do a warm-up. And be sure to strengthen your arms, legs and shoulder girdle, develop coordination. Regular exercises on uneven bars and horizontal bars will help you with this.

Director of BC Parma, ex-player of Ural Great told Telesem about it Alexander Bashminov .

    - It can be said that the revival of Perm basketball began with the appearance of the Parma club last summer. When I was offered to lead them, I took a break for the sake of decency, but for myself I immediately decided that I agreed.

Now there are three teams in the structure of the club? these are Parma (major league), Academ-Basket DUBL (children's and youth basketball league) and Parma-2, which was organized quite recently for games in the First League, so to speak, in regional competitions.

Such a project as Parma-2 is necessary in the basketball system. It enables players to constantly improve and smoothly transition from children's basketball to adult. I myself remember how dizzy I was, how hard it was when I abruptly got into professional basketball.

Frankly speaking, we have conceived all this for the sake of DUBL. If there is no professional team, then children, after graduating from sports schools, face a problem? they have nowhere to go further. You need to either quit sports or leave Perm. Many players chose the first option. Now this problem is solved.

Of course, the revival of big basketball? the matter is not easy. Especially since he was not in Perm for three whole years? since the fall of Ural Great. Difficulties arise, first of all, with financing. Serious investments are needed for the full development of basketball. But we do not despair, we are actively looking for investors, we are negotiating. And Parma-2, together with the founders, is still financed from our own savings. Do volunteers help us overcome many difficulties? people who love basketball and believe in the success of the project.

Basketball is a kind of drive that gives strength to move forward. This season we have already played all home matches. We now have four more away games left. It will depend on them whether it will be possible to hold the semi-finals of the Russian championship in Perm. Do we have competitors? six teams at once. But none of them had as many fans at the matches as they came to us. In the hall of the Neftyanik sports complex (named after V.P. Sukharev), about 1800 people gathered for each game!

I am sure that now the Higher League will definitely remain in Perm. I would like the Super League to appear next season. It is much more interesting in terms of entertainment. And then the professional basketball league, and European cups, and victories?

We all remember the success of Ural Great: even those who never thought about basketball got infected then. That areola of glory and excitement that was, cannot be forgotten. We want to repeat this experience and, God willing, improve it. But to get to that, you have to eat a pound of salt. For my part, I am ready to do absolutely everything and even more for this!

    - Opera and Ballet Theatre. In the park, my family and I love to walk the dog. We like the performances, and the building itself is very beautiful.
