Kirilenko on why everyone needs basketball | SPORT

An international friendly basketball tournament has ended in Kazan. The Russian team became the winner on it. The correspondent of AIF-Kazan spoke with President of the Russian Basketball Federation Andrey Kirilenko about a new stage in the development of Russian basketball, plans for EuroBasket and the preparation of future champions.

Home is better

Artur Mukhin, AiF-Kazan: Andrey, we are glad to see you in Kazan. How long ago were you last here?

Andrei Kirilenko was born in 1981 in Izhevsk. At the age of 15, he began playing professional basketball. In 2000 he was recognized as the best player in the Russian championship. In 2001, he received an invitation to play in the NBA, as part of the Utah Jazz club. European champion in 2007, bronze medalist of the 2012 Olympic Games. In the 2012/2013 season, he played in the United States under a 10 million contract for the Minnesota Timberwolves club. In recent years, he played for the Brooklyn Nets club team. On August 25, 2015, he headed the Russian Basketball Federation.

Andrei Kirilenko: I was here recently on a business trip, but when I was a player, I came here as part of CSKA. In any case, I am very glad that the Russian team, which has not been here since 2006, has finally reached Kazan. Two years ago, we decided that the Russian national team should play the maximum number of matches within the country, with its own fans, and so far we are sticking to this path. Last year we had full halls in Perm, Krasnodar, St. Petersburg. I am glad that now the national team plays at the tournament in Kazan.

- Tatarstan is thundering with its large-scale events, today's tournament is a new chapter...

- It's great that Tatarstan pays such attention to sports, it really is the sports capital of our country. As for big tournaments and basketball, I can say that we have applied to host the 2023 FIBA World Championship and Kazan is one of the cities that could potentially host it if Russia gets the right to host it.

- The head coach of the Russian national team said that the national team considers this tournament only a preparatory one, is that true?

- No, that's not true, of course, the team must try and go all out. The time for half the preparation before the European Championship is approaching and now is the time to show what the team is capable of. It seems to me that when you play in front of your fans, it is impossible to play badly: you set yourself up morally to some level (at the tournament in Kazan, the team won three victories in three matches - ed.).

- What is the state of the current Russian team?

- Looking at the EuroBasket, I can say that so far everything is going according to plan. While, of course, the team is not 100% ready, it is clear that there are both physical and technical failures, but it is progressing. From game to game, a picture begins to emerge, leaders and those who will bet on are visible. The tournament in Kazan is indicative in this sense, because now the pattern and style that we will see at the European Championship should appear.

About plans for EuroBasket

- Speaking of him, what result of the team at EuroBasket would you consider satisfactory?

- Getting into the semi-finals, that is, I will evaluate the game for any medals as a success. Failure - absence from the group, for me personally it will be a blow in the stomach. It is clear that in many ways 1/8 and 1/4 is a lottery, because at the European Championship there are about 10 teams of the same level that can beat each other on any given day. So I'm more interested in the content of the game. If we play confidently and, for example, lose in overtime in a tense struggle, then I will understand that we have a team, but today there was a failure. I don't want to see weak-willed games, I want to see a team that fights, that strives and realizes its potential. If they lose, then this is our current level, but if they don’t try, it will be a disappointment.

Unix needs to work with the fans

- By inviting fans to the tournament in Kazan, you called the city one of the most basketball-friendly in the country. Do you really think so?

- Isn't that right? If Unix is not performing successfully, then who else, except for CSKA? In fact, the Uniks have been among the elite of Russian basketball for the last decade, regularly ranked among the top 4 teams in the country. Of course, we want more from Unix, and for more pupils to perform. I would try to pay attention to this. Many talented children grow up in Tatarstan and come here from different parts of the country. I was at the Volga Academy of Sports, where many guys from different cities study, but I would try to focus on my students, because there are enough basketball talents here to play at the highest level.

- Basket Hall's stands are rarely filled, and not only Kazan sins with this in terms of basketball.

- I can say that it does not depend on the sports result at all. The presence of fans in the stands is only indirectly related to the success of the team. An example is the Perm "Parma", which won only one game for the whole season. 32 matches, 31 losses, but the best attendance in the country. There is no need to put an equal sign between sports results and fans in the stands.

Here, by the way, there is a huge layer of work that everyone should pay attention to, including Unix. I think he is able to work with his fans. I know that there are enthusiasts who should be brought in to work with those groups of people who are interested in basketball. They just need to create conditions and a comfortable atmosphere. It will be a big step for Kazan basketball if the club starts to work on the near-sport component, and not rely only on the result, with which Kazan is all right.

Let's not flatter ourselves and continue to work

- What did you manage to achieve in two years as President of the Basketball Federation?

- I can say right away that a lot of things have not been done yet, and it was foolish to believe that we would come and everything would suddenly change and sparkle with colors. But I would like to highlight three points.

Firstly, when I arrived, the Federation was disqualified from an international organization and there was such an isolated state from everything that was happening, which, of course, is not right for such a large country with such historical basketball traditions - starting with the USSR national team, which won the Olympics and the World Championship, and ending with the Russian team, which won both the European Championship and the World Championship, and was second at the Olympics. We managed to return and work very actively in this field, many representatives of the Federation joined various international committees - technical commissions, legal commissions, the FIBA central bureau. All this has led just to the fact that we are now contenders for the 2023 World Cup. Such a path, of course, is impressive, but we do not deceive ourselves and continue to work. We are glad that we spent these two years productively.

Second, reserve. This year, for the first time in the history of our basketball, we have two world champions at once. Sometimes attention to the main men's team of the country does not allow you to follow the rest of the national teams, of which we have eight. The women's team in 3x3 basketball became the winner of the World Championship, and the women's team in the under-19 category also became the world champion. In the final, they beat the Americans, who dominated at this age for more than 10 years. It's probably too early to talk about a certain system thanks to which we will all win. Rather, the ground has appeared for our reserve teams to grope for these threads and take a step from potential teams to winners.

And thirdly, the accessibility of the sport. Now on the website of the Federation you can find any game that takes place in the country, from children's basketball to national team games. During the season, we have about 4,500 games and, it seems to me, this is convenient for a parent whose child has gone to competitions, and he can click once and see the result on the other side of the country.

- There are successes of women's teams, but what about the men's reserve? Maybe there are young candidates for the national team?

- There are candidates for the national team, but the men's team is a bit more of a headache. We will look and try different options. We have already done some experiment by collecting the first team from the age of 15, although this is usually done from the age of 16, we have been leading them under control all year and now they will play at the European Championships and I want to see what condition they will fit in.

About youth

- Your personal project "School 2. 0" - what is it and how does it work?

- "School 2.0" is an application that you can open on your phone to conduct a basketball lesson. This is more of a methodical, educational part, in the future we plan to introduce a textbook on how to teach basketball to a girl or boy, various tips. Any physical education teacher or coach, if he needs additional information, can open the application for free and conduct a lesson. This is an educational resource that you can use on your own.

Every school should have a basketball hall, says Andrei Kirilenko. Photo: Ministry of Sports of the Republic of Tatarstan / Ruslan Ishmukhametov

- The Federation is working towards the training of professional athletes, but is the work being done in terms of the health of the nation?

- We take basketball very seriously as a sport that attracts young people. As for me, he is very intelligent and smart, because a lot of tactical and technical actions and skills are implemented here. That is, you can be strong, but this is hardly enough to be the best - you also need a jump, speed and, of course, a head. A lot of elements are involved and it is very important that every school has at least a basketball hall with rings.

With the advent of the 3x3 discipline, the phenomenon becomes even more widespread. Basketball starts from the yard, from school, and now it may not start with a 5-on-5 game, but I got together with two friends and played for a day in a neighboring yard, throwing in one ring. I think it will be a great springboard for even more love for basketball. Of course, we will try to hold as many mass tournaments as possible. Our geography is huge, except that in the northern regions they still play more in the halls due to weather conditions, but the rest will go outside. All you need to do is nail the shackle onto a tree and play for your own pleasure.

What techniques exist and how they differ

Let's first deal with the definition: playing techniques are skills that a professional player must possess. Sounds simple, but what exactly are the skills in basketball? What should an amateur who wants to improve the performance of his game pay attention to? Let's figure it out.

The main goal in basketball is to successfully hit the ball into the basket, and everything that happens on the court only brings the players to this moment. There are skills that basketball players work out in training to bypass rivals and make a successful shot.

Before we list them, let us remind you that basketball is a team sport, and even the most successful players do not master all the tricks perfectly. With a serious approach to training, you should decide on your position on the site and especially carefully work out the necessary techniques.

So the post must deftly pick up the ball under the hoop and throw it right into the basket. Back row players are highly regarded for their ability to pass and make accurate shots from medium to long distances. And for an attacking basketball player, it is extremely important to be able to make lightning-fast breakthroughs to the ring. All these techniques and skills are practiced in training.

What are the basic skills?

  • Holding the throw. Performed with two hands. Widely spaced fingers hold the ball from both sides. One of the basic skills for any player.
  • Catching the ball. Another basic skill that no basketball player can do without. But are you sure you know how to do it right?!

The easiest way to catch the ball is at chin level. To do this, you need to take a small step forward and stretch your arms towards the ball with widely spread fingers - a “funnel”. In this case, the thumbs should be directed towards each other and brought together up to 3-5 centimeters. This will save you from slipping and hitting the ball in the face if you catch it at high speed. At the moment the ball touches the fingers, you need to make a shock-absorbing movement and transfer it to the chest. When catching the ball above the head, the actions are similar, but it is necessary to extinguish the speed of its flight from the top-front, and then transfer it to the chest in an arc.

One of the most difficult tricks is catching the ball flying behind. Such a pass is often used to quickly break through to the opponent's ring. For him, without slowing down, make a slight turn of the shoulder and head towards the ball, and then catch it with the far hand and move it to the chest with a raking movement.

Basic passing techniques:

There are several technically correct ways to pass the ball. One of the most basic is a transfer with two hands from the chest. In this position, the ball is most protected from the attacks of opponents, and besides, the transfer from the chest is the most accurate and reliable, regardless of whether it is carried out on the spot or while the player is moving.

  • Two-handed downshift is more commonly used after stops and turns. During the swing, the ball is taken to the thigh, after which it is sent to another player with a sharp movement of both hands. Such a transfer is effective for beating especially tall opponents.
  • One-handed passes are less accurate and more often used when speed is important. Their development should be given special attention in training in order to achieve maximum strength and accuracy.
  • The shoulder pass is used when the ball needs to be passed as far and as fast as possible, and the hook pass, performed in an arcing motion, is good for passing the opponent.
  • A rebound pass is also good for getting around a nimble and agile opponent. It can be done with one or two hands. In this case, the push of the ball must be strong, and the rebound point must be closer to the receiving player.

What about dribbling?

Dribbling is the most basic thing in basketball. What makes this sport different from the rest. Simply put, dribbling is dribbling. It allows the player in possession of the ball, without violating strict basketball rules, to enter a position convenient for attacking, approach the ring and score the ball. The dribbling is carried out by elastic pushes of the ball with the fingers. It is dribbling that should be given special attention in training beginners.

Well-developed dribbling technique will teach you not only how to move on the court, but also skillfully take the ball away from your opponents, which will bring you closer to the coveted ring.

But we already wrote about how to properly throw the ball into the ring in our other article;)
