How to open a basketball gym

How to Open a Gymnasium | Small Business

By Heather Topham Wood

When you open a gymnasium, you are providing a space for athlete teams to practice various sports. Gymnasiums are also referred to as indoor sports facilities and may include basketball courts, indoor soccer fields, batting cages, racquet ball courts and matted areas for gymnastics. If you plan to open a gymnasium, you need a large enough building to accommodate sports team practices.

  1. Develop a business plan. It outlines your plan for the gymnasium and states your objectives for your company. Entrepreneur David Ronick explains that a business plan includes what you are going to do and how you are going to do it. List all operating and equipment costs you can expect as part of your business. When you seek out funding, financial institutions will want to review your business plan.

  2. Find a location for your gymnasium. You may purchase a previously owned gymnasium or find a site to begin construction on a new facility. Depending on how many courts and game play areas you plan to offer, you may need anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 square feet.

  3. Build up funds to open your gymnasium. Apply for small business loans and grants through local banks. You need to show how much money you’ll need to start operations and how much you can expect to flow into the business as a way to pay off the loans. An exit strategy must also be presented in case your gymnasium business does not succeed.

  4. Outfit the gymnasium with the necessary equipment. Required equipment and facilities may include hardwood flooring for the courts, artificial turf for indoor fields, nets, mats, sports equipment, lighting fixtures and furniture, and lockers and shower rooms.

  5. Set up a pricing model for the gymnasium. Gymnasiums charge customers a rental fee to use the space in the gymnasium. You could also offer classes and free play sessions to increase your revenue.

  6. Market the gymnasium. Advertise your new gymnasium through local newspapers and sports themed magazines and newsletters. Network with local clubs and schools that have sports teams that may need practice space.

  7. Launch your grand opening. Hire and train staff members to assist clients with renting and using space in your gymnasium. Host an event to announce your business to the community with tours, food and giveaways.

I am looking for ideas to start a small business. I am 30 years old and I have no business experience. I do have experience with basketball. I know the game very well and have played up to the high school level and have coached for the past 10+ years on the recreation level as well as a few years at the middle and high school levels. Recently I was thinking of opening a basketball gym with multiple courts. It would be members only. I would also rent courts out for people who wanted to use them privately. I thought this idea was good but I ran into a few obstacles. One was I don't know if the amount of money from members joining would be enough to cover overhead costs, monthly bills, etc. Also, I have never run a business so I really don't have a clue as to what to do to get it started and what I would need to do to maintain the business. I have other interests but I know most about basketball. I have heard people say that it is best to start a business in a field I am familiar with, but I have been having trouble coming up with a basketball related business. Any input you have will be appreciated. Thank you

Hi Aaron, I love basketball and have played causally 2-3 times per week for many years - however I have never paid to play. You could make a business like this work, but you need a way to draw in your customers. Your main competition would be the local park or church that offers their courts for free. You would need to add value to your service to get paying customers. Unfortunately, the value of renting a gym and paying the overhead costs is greatly reduced because your competition offers this for free. Consider what your competition does not offer that your customers may want. Non professionals enjoy aspects of the game such as competition, exercise and socializing. You may want to consider offering services that cater to these aspects. Perhaps hiring a referee, offer personal training and leading social events for your members off the court. All of these things you may be able to do yourself to start. Don't be afraid to start small, and expect to work very hard!

Hi, Shaw. I actually have a cousin who was living in Santa Clara. You might have run into him playing basketball. Anyways thanks for the advice. I think the competitive aspect could draw people in. Having referees is something I never considered but might be a good idea because it would reduce arguments and fights. As far as places that offer this for free, I don't know of any. I know of churches that charge for rental services or places such as 24 hour fitness, but no place where people can play indoors for free.

As far as starting small would you think having a place with two courts would be better than having a whole bunch? My way of thinking was I wanted to offer a place where lots of people could play without having to wait. I thought that would attract customers. But I don't know. Maybe I could make it attractive in another way.

My biggest issue with this idea is finding a way to make the profits outweigh the overhead costs such as air conditioning, electricity, office supplies, employees, etc. What do you think?

Good points here. Keep in mind that there are lots of free things in life BUT people are willing to pay for them anyway! Ex. A library has free books, computers, and movies, but many of us go out and buy a kindle, Surface, and newspapers daily. The key here is to create an experience around you gym that members will buy into.

Stages of construction on the example of a football stadium

The thickness of the foundation pit and the amount of materials that are needed for your foundation, we select depending on the size of the field. We select drainage and other systems based on the regional location (how much precipitation is in your region, what kind of drainage is needed). Additionally, we equip drainage wells, or divert them to the drainage system. Field slopes of several different types depending on site operating conditions.

Preparing the excavation, sand bed, drainage system

The quality of a football field is more than half dependent on the quality of the base! Our base is a monolithic solid single layer, which over the years does not form any fractures, the soil does not go anywhere and remains flat throughout the entire period of operation. Relatively speaking, even if a tractor passes over the base, there will be no tire marks, because everything is solid and dense!

Sequential compaction of base layers

We carry out all types of additional improvement works: we can install a fence for you, pave an asphalt path to something, level the territory, paint walls, curbs, etc. We will perform all the required related work!

Installation of the curbstone

The laying of artificial grass itself is as important as the preparation of the base. When laying the field, an important aspect is gluing the rolls and cutting the markings. Gluing must be done securely. The material in the work requires getting used to, because the two-component glue rolls down after a while and they need to work quickly.

Laying the grass on the prepared base, gluing it and cutting the markings

Be sure to remember: the gate is installed with a safety requirement so that it does not turn over. Therefore, this aspect is given special importance. In this regard, the gate is either concreted or attached to an accompanying fence.

Installation of the goal

The backfilling of a football field determines a large part of the playing characteristics. Backfilling is a responsible job, because the presence or absence of drops and bumps, which will eventually be felt during the game, depends on the uniform distribution of sand and crumb rubber on sports grounds. That is, there should be both a flat base and a high-quality pile with an even distribution of backfill under it.

Raising grass, distributing sand and crumb rubber across the field

We cooperate with the largest manufacturers of stands, fences and other sports equipment in the Russian Federation. Therefore, if necessary, we can supply everything you need to the object at a wholesale price. We install all this equipment, advise in which cases which is better, etc. We can supply many things both in a finished version and make them ourselves on the spot.

Installation of additional equipment (treadmills, jumping pits, safety fences, grandstands)

You can also be sure that we will carry out all the necessary arrangements for their improvement on the site and the adjacent territory.

We supply basketball surfaces from world manufacturers

The dynamics of basketball matches means high speed, sudden movements and heavy loads on the joints. It is very important that the flooring of the basketball court is both wear-resistant and injury-proof at the same time. For basketball courts we offer: tennis, hard or soft-hard, modular plastic, polyurethane coating and crumb rubber coating.

Our company only works with proven materials that have passed the strictest quality control, so we offer a wide selection of outdoor basketball surfaces from domestic and foreign manufacturers, such as: ERFOLG , BERGO , Plastfacto , Conica , Novol , Aropa , CRUMB , GUMBIT 90 MASTER FIBER and many more.

In addition to the construction of basketball courts, we take care of the complete set of the object and provide it with all the necessary equipment until it is ready for operation. In accordance with the requirements of the customer, any sports equipment can be installed: backboards, rings, stands of a certain capacity, running tracks, a sector for standing long jumps and, of course, various types of fences.

We offer metal fences or safety nets at the customer's choice
  • Metal 2D and 3D railings are sectional structures of increased strength with rod diameters from 4 to 6 mm, protected by a polymer and zinc coating. Unlike other fences, mesh panel fencing is maintenance-free - it does not collect dust, does not fade in the sun and does not deform under wind loads, and also does not need periodic painting
  • Protective mesh made of kapron or nylon threads can have different mesh sizes: 100x100, 40x40 or 20x20. Such a fence is ideal for zoning the playing space and protecting spectators from sports equipment. The mesh does not need maintenance and is easily restored

While building new basketball courts, we also work on existing facilities that need major repairs or minor restoration. We are happy to undertake the design of a sports facility, without including construction work, and for the implementation of the facility according to an already finished project.

"It's realistic to build in two years." Business Class learned the details of the construction of the Basketball Center

Sergey Butakov, General Director of NPO "AeroSphere" - about the Basketball Center in Perm, construction time, obligations of business and government, and return on investment.

At the end of February it was announced that it was planned to build a Basketball Center in Perm. It will appear at the intersection of Pushkin and Klimenko streets and will be the first sports facility in the region implemented in the format of a public-private partnership. The authorities will provide the investor with a land plot at st. Klimenko, 26, equipped with utilities. Now it is in municipal ownership. According to the investor, General Director of NPO Aerosfera LLC Sergey Butakov, the multifunctional complex will consist of 4 halls.

“One of them will be large enough to host professional basketball games. 3 more halls will be designed for everyone involved in various team sports, including sections, yard teams, etc. We want the complex to work around the clock,” said Sergey Butakov.

Sergey Valeryevich, why did you decide to invest in the Basketball Center in Perm?

– Firstly, we have been supporting our basketball for a long time (more than 10 years) (we started with Ural Great), and secondly, I myself have been involved in and played for the school basketball team for a long time, and most Most importantly, my partners and I have long wanted to do something significant, important and useful for the beloved city in which we grew up, which provided and continues to provide an opportunity for its residents to develop. As they say, there was a wonderful moment when the stars aligned. At one of the business meetings, in a conversation with the deputies, a proposal was received from the president of the Parma basketball club, Sergei Stanislavovich Boguslavsky, to participate in a joint project with the government of the region, within the framework of PPP - a public-private partnership. It should be noted that our Governor Dmitry Nikolaevich Makhonin and his team very promptly and competently (really in a partnership) helped in the preparation of a large number of documents, approvals, site selection, etc., etc.

The official information from the regional government said that the obligations of the authorities are the provision of a land plot with communications, and the investor is the construction of a palace. All right?

- Yes, that's right. The PPP law is very voluminous, and there are a lot of obligations on both sides. But if in large strokes, then these are the main points.

The site of the government of the region says: "The duration of the PPP contract will be 11 years." What does it mean?

- During this period, this beautiful sports facility will (under government control) be operated and developed by us only for its intended purpose.

The construction period of the Basketball Palace is quite short - 2021-2022. How real are they?

- Today they are quite real, given the government assistance in the preparation and use of prefabricated technologies in the construction. The city needs this project, and we will build it on time.

Is it planned that Parma will play at the Basketball Palace? Are there any ideas for competitions in other sports?

– It is unlikely that Parma will play, for games of this level a sports palace is needed, but the players, of course, will be able to train (if they want). But all other professional teams (slightly lower in the division) will be able to play. As for other sports, we guarantee to provide all the possibilities of this center to anyone who suits such sites, within 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Are there any concerts or other cultural events planned?

Don't miss: Hold on like a starfish on a rock. Big interview with Elena ZhdanovaMarch 15, 2021, 08:00

– Not for 11 years.
