Go low in Korea and get back to basketball.
What do we know about Jonathan Motley? The NCAA and G-League star is in his first season in European basketball, and the adjustment is in the process, so there's no doubt that this is only the beginning of his extravaganza. The history of the forward - with its ups and downs and victories - in the exclusive material of the VTB United League.
Jonathan was born in Houston, Texas, where he started playing basketball. He played for North Shore High School, with which he won two district championships. Gifted with physical data, Motley trained and honed his talent from early childhood, which brought not only team results, but also personal awards - two MVP titles and three first district teams as part of the school team.
“Growing up, I really liked Kevin Garnett's acting. Those emotions with which he played, the way he fought for every ball. I always wanted to dominate the court in the same way, destroy opponents with dunks and make them afraid of me, ”recalls the forward.
But there might not have been a professional career. In high school, Motley was diagnosed with peritonitis - he spent 18 days in Texas Children's Hospital. Jonathan underwent two difficult surgeries, and the doctors said that "his recovery is a kind of blessing."
Before entering college, Jonathan was ranked 83rd in the list of the best students in the United States. The choice of university is the most important moment in the career of most young players, and Jonathan made the right decision by choosing Baylor, which was located in Waco, just 300 km from Houston.
Motley had three great seasons in the NCAA and became one of the most memorable players in the history of the university. His roommate during his first two years at the university was Kenny Cheri, who is currently rocking in Saratov with Avtodor, averaging 20.5 points and 5.5 assists per game.

Jonathan spent his starting season at Baylor in the Redshirt status, which means the minimum number of game minutes, but the maximum involvement in the training process. Even some inconsistencies can be found in various sources about whether Motley played at all in the 2013/14 season. A popular Real GM source lists 1 match, and most other reputable publications agree that Jonathan's career at Baylor began in the 2014/15 season.
That doesn't change the fact that he was the player who took the university to the next level. Yes, Baylor managed to win the national championship already without Motley in 2021, but it was with Jonathan as the leader that the team for the first time in history climbed to first place in the national ranking, which is compiled by the Associated Press and 25 coaches of the best NCAA teams. It happened in January 2017.
Interestingly, even though Jonathan was not in the Top 5 of all time at Baylor in key stats (1229points - 17th, 122 blocks - 8th), but he remains the only player in the history of the university who was able to score 1000 points and make 600 rebounds, 100 assists and 100 blocks. Versatility is a hallmark of Motley, he is good both in attack and in defense.
Jonathan's energy and unstoppable power led to the fact that in the 2016/17 season he received the prestigious Karl Malone Award, which is given at the end of the season to the best power forward in the NCAA. 17.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 blocks per game - that's impressive!
Utah Legendary Forward Karl Malone Award has been presented since the 2014-15 season, in which Montrez Harrel won the award. Subsequent recipients of the award were Georges Niang, DeAndre Ayton, Zion Williamson, Obi Toppin and Drew Timme last year. More than a good company.
Although then hardly anyone expected that it was Jonathan who would reach such a level and be stable throughout the season. The famous Baylor coach Scott Drew, who has been in charge of the team since 2003, did not hide the fact that even for him it was a little unexpected: “We always hope for the best, but we could hardly imagine that Jonathan would become the owner of the Karl Malone prize and the best heavyweight forward among students. He deserves a lot of credit for his hard work, but let's not forget his teammates who helped him achieve such success."
Baylor reached the National Sweet 16 that year, where he lost to South Carolina. At this, Motley's student career came to an end and after such a hurricane season, NBA teams should have lined up behind him, but ...
SHOCK: MOTLEY WAS NOT DRAFTED
Amazing! He was predicted for a first-round pick all season, Motley had the 5th wingspan (7'4) on his draft combine - and then such a fall. How? Why?!
It's all about the knee injury he suffered in that ill-fated game against South Carolina in the NCAA. Many experts believed that this injury would come back to haunt the best power forward among students in the near future. In addition, at the time of the nomination for the 2017 draft, Jonathan did not have an agent, who appeared after the draft combine.
A young guy with character has repeatedly proved to people that they are wrong, underestimating him, so another part of the experts confidently predicted that Motley would find himself an NBA team no matter what. Jonathan performed well in the Summer League and signed an agreement with Dallas, becoming the first player in the history of the club with a two-way contract. In 11 games with the Mavericks, he averaged 8.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He spent most of his time in the G-League as part of the farm club. Before the start of the 2018/19 seasonmoved to the Clippers, for which he played for two years.
Not to say that Motley succeeded in the NBA - for 3 seasons he played a total of 46 games with an average statistics of 4.9 points, 2.4 rebounds per game. But in the G League, Motley was very good: 85 of 87 starts, 23.4 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1 block per game. Jonathan was named to the G-League All-Star Team three times.
SHOCK NUMBER 2: MOVING TO SOUTH KOREA
He trained with Phoenix in December 2020, but moved to South Korea a couple of months later. The decision, frankly, is not the most predictable. Phrases about downed pilots and a station called "Final" immediately come to mind. And this is at 25 years old. There were many such examples.
However, if you follow the logic of Motley, then everything becomes not so confusing. Especially if you take into account all the difficulties of the pandemic time with the issuance of visas, documents and the almost complete lack of the ability to transport your closest people with you.
“It was my first time overseas and I have no regrets. I was looking for a club where I could play the last 2-3 months of the season and considered a number of offers. My daughter was just born and I found an option in which the family could go with me. The conditions that Elephants offered me were the most suitable. Moreover, I wanted to see the world and visit Asia. I can say that I liked everything there - from everyday life to the team in which I played. South Korea is a wonderful country!”
Of course, Motley was a superstar on the team from the port city of Incheon. In 24 games for the Elephants, he averaged 20.7 points, 8. 9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 blocks per game.
As usual in such situations, the fate of this talented player was difficult to predict. The possibility that the trip to Korea was just a reset was just as likely as the possibility that Motley could stay there for a long time.
RETURN TO BIG BASKETBALL
Nevertheless, Jonathan decided to return to the big game and signed a contract with Lokomotiv-Kuban. VTB United League and Eurocup after South Korea sounds solid. Moreover, he is not one of those guys who consider the VTB League solely as a springboard for returning to the NBA.
“I just play basketball, I don't have any far-reaching goals, I concentrate on the present, not the future. I know that European basketball is valued in the world, and if you show your worth here, then good offers will not keep you waiting. But right now I'm only thinking about how to be useful to my team, how to show my best basketball, ”says Jonathan.
Motley played three matches for Loko at the start of the VTB League season, and with each game he only progresses. In the opening match against UNICS, he scored 16 points and made 8 rebounds, in the home game against Tsmoki-Minsk, the red-green forward already had 19points and 9 rebounds. In Loko's last game in Saratov against Avtodor, he scored 26 points!
A decent start in the VTB League after South Korea.
“I like everything in Krasnodar – the organization itself, my teammates, the coaching staff, the conditions. I can say that I have almost adapted to European basketball, it remains only to slightly improve my understanding of refereeing decisions and some moments of the game. In Saratov, for example, there was my first match for Loko, in which I did not get hooked on fouls. If I am more attentive at this point, I can obviously play even better, ”the forward argues.
What will happen next if he is just warming up and already churning out such highlights?!
“It all happened quite spontaneously! When I got the ball, I was not in the best position to shoot and planned to pass to a free partner. I saw an open Darius Thompson, but when I almost gave a pass, it was closed anyway, there was very little time left to make a decision. I looked at the ring, gave myself a pass from the shield, and that's how it all happened. This is not the first such dunk in my career. It seems like I did something similar in Korea,” Motley recalls.
Jonathan himself noted that he was looking for Darius Thompson at that moment, which is not surprising, because both guys were born on May 4, 1995, so their connection must be on a subconscious level.
A long season lies ahead, during which Motley is sure to be featured in the symbolic team of the week and in the hit parade of the best moments. This guy is used to leaving everything on the court and does not hide the fact that he would like to become the best newcomer of the VTB League!
“The most important thing for me is the victory of the team. I think that we can win the Eurocup this year, and in general we try to win every match, no matter how trite it may sound. If we talk about my personal goals, then I would like to become the Rookie of the Year in the VTB League, I think that this is quite realistic. You need to work hard for this, but I do everything to become better, and it was not in vain that I chose Loko. I am sure that we will succeed, ”adds the player.
I wonder how the roles will be redistributed on the site when Alan Williams returns to Loko - another unstoppable "big".
