8 ways to start a sports ministry

Want a fun way to engage seekers of all ages? Sports and recreation ministries expand opportunities for your congregation to connect with each other and the community.

Living a God-centered life can involve a little sweat, fun and competition. Any church or cluster of congregations can consider starting an exercise class, developing a sports league or serving as a center of recreational activity. Consider these 8 ways to start a sports ministry.

  1. Build it.
In Mobile, Ala., Christ United Methodist Church built Christ Center, a community recreational facility, the hub of its sports and recreation ministry. Since more than 90 percent of people surveyed said they participate in or watch some form of sport or recreation weekly, the recreation center seemed a natural opportunity to reach as many people as possible.

  2. Assess interest.
A successful sports and recreation ministry should be developed with involvement from the congregation. Survey members to identify what activities interest them. Ask how they would be willing to work in the ministry (teach, coach, play, attend). Analyze results and see how your existing facility could accommodate the ministry's beginnings. Perhaps a nearby school could share its sports field for league play. You could move furniture in your church's community room to accommodate a weekly yoga class.

  3. Inspire others.
Mobile's Christ United Methodist Church wanted to reach and minister to people through sports and recreation "not only entertain, but [also to] strengthen bodies, sharpen minds and introduce people to clean, 'love inspired,' competitive sports, fitness programs, family outings and personal activities that will become a point of contact with the other ministries of the church. "

Open to church members and their guests, the CUMC center offers recreational facilities and sports leagues each season—soccer in fall, basketball in winter, baseball in spring and flag football in summer. Students are divided by grade. All sports except baseball are co-ed. Seasonal fees range from $40 to $75. Its detailed Web site offers sign-up information as well as electronic copies of brochures that could be printed and shared (scroll to bottom of home page for brochures).

  4. Offer more than athletics.
Tap into your congregation's expertise or find other community members interested in sharing their talents by teaching a class. In addition to sports teams in soccer, hockey and basketball, Atlanta's Northside United Methodist Church's Sports and Recreation Ministry has classes that encompasses such areas as art, yoga, ballet, drama, and more.

  5. Further the church mission.
Matthews United Methodist Church in North Carolina sees its recreation ministries as a way to further its mission of reaching, teaching and serving. It offers fitness programs. Cardio Dance is offered once a week, Forever Young workouts with weights and stretching three times a week and their Sit N Fit program offers exercise opportunities for those wanting to increase stamina and strenght in a safe way for those unable to do regular programs. Childcare also is provided for all classes. Fun and fellowship for men comes in the form of pick-up basketball in the gym one scheduled evening or afternoon a week. The pick-up games require little administrative effort, just someone to open the doors and welcome the players.

  6. Don't go it alone.
Matthews UMC partners with Christ Covenant Church to have seasonal sports leagues through SOAR (Sports Outreach And Recreation) Sports. Since 1990, the Christ Covenant Church national program has touched more than 25,000 youth whose coaches and referees follow Jesus' teachings and see what it means to have good sportsmanship, Christian character and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

  7. Get into the wider community.
Do not limit your sports and recreation ministry to your congregation. Welcome everyone by posting fliers and signs about the activities at community centers such as the YMCA, local park bulletin boards or school gymnasiums.

  8. Involve everyone.
Involving the entire church community can happen at least one Sunday each year. Celebrate "Sports and Recreation Sunday." Invite participants in the church's sports and recreation programs to attend a service, wearing their uniforms. Then gather afterward for a dinner. Be sure to include plenty of vegetables for vegetarians. One church uses the celebration meal to raise money for scholarships for the sports ministry.

Where is Napier, why didn't Pangos stay, what about the injuries? Alexander Tserkovny answers fans' questions - Eurostep - Blogs

Editor's Note: You are reading the official Zenit blog on Sports.ru.

- Why isn't Shabazz Napier playing? (Philip Ponkratov)

- Shabazz had a serious injury, this has been mentioned more than once. The club and the player himself did everything to ensure that the recovery went as quickly as possible. Experts from different countries were involved in the diagnosis and treatment, doctors-rehabilitators from the Zenit football club provided great help. Napier is training with the general group and will play as soon as he is fit enough to help the team. This should happen as soon as possible.

- Has the club considered bringing back Kevin Pangos or looking for another experienced point guard? (Ilya Smyshlyaev)

- We did not hide the fact that for this season the extension of cooperation with Kevin Pangos was one of the main tasks in the formation of the squad. But his performance in Europe was not a priority. At the moment we have the main point guard Shabazz Napier, and his level is not in doubt, we really hope that he will help the team a lot in the rest of the season. We have a great relationship with Kevin, we are always in touch and follow each other's performances.

- Is the issue of strengthening in 5 numbers being considered by the club? (Vladimir Lukyanov)

- This position is definitely not considered for this season, this position is fully staffed. Arturas Gudaitis is successfully recovering from his ankle injury and will soon join the team.

- Now it makes no sense to judge who would be the best legionnaire of the season in the VTB United League, if Napier had not received an unfortunate injury in the fall. But few people argue that now such is Mario Hezonja. In this regard, I want to ask if the club considered the possibility of signing this player, bearing in mind the connections of our coaches and leaders with Panathinaikos? Is there any regret that in the end he significantly strengthened his direct competitor? Is there a possibility of such a transfer in the future, given his one-year contract with UNICS? (Sergey Puzikov)

- Mario Hezona is certainly a great player, but for various reasons, he was not in the scope of our interests before the current season. What will happen next is difficult to say. I think you consider him the best legionary, first of all, because of his bright name and charismatic style of play, but in terms of usefulness and efficiency, he has many competitors. But in any case, the best will need to be evaluated based on the results of the season and the contribution to the overall result of the team.

- Hello, dear Alexander Tserkovny, do you think that the Academy of our club will give talents that will really, on a par with legionnaires will play at the start? (Wot)

- When is it tentative to expect our youth in the roster, at least as 8-9 rotation players, and not 15? (Maxim Kolyanov)

- When will the youth team be added? Are there any talented players in Zenit-M and CYBL who will be able to get into the main team in the near future? Who is the future of Russian basketball? (@allinyourhandsman)

- How is it planned to integrate Zenit-M players into the main team? After all, so far, even with games against outsiders in the endings, with a big difference in the score, young people do not get playing time. (Alexey Bogdanovich)

- Now the club has created excellent conditions for high-level pupils to appear in the Zenit system. We have a full-fledged youth project, and our generation of players, pupils of the Zenit Basketball Academy, is growing. Given the very young age of the majority, the high level of competition and the extremely tight schedule of the first team games, it is difficult to integrate a young player even into the training process of the first team. But we regularly do this, for example, at the moment our 17-year-old pupil is involved in training with the main team. There will be more to come. To say that a foreign coach and a club are not interested in training their youth and Russian players is absurd to say the least. It is extremely difficult to win anything without quality Russian players, especially the VTB United League. I am sure that the future of our club is in my students.

- Why is the access of fans to youth games closed? (Andrey Morozov)

- This is a temporary measure related to restrictions and limits on holding sports events, which was initiated by the territorial bodies of Rospotrebnadzor. Games at the Ice, Yubileiny and SIBUR Arenas are coordinated separately in a special order.

- I'm very interested in the prospect of recreating our team in Superleague-1 (Elena Egorova)

- I think that there should be a Superleague team in St. Petersburg. And, probably, it will not be very important whether it is Zenit or Spartak. Moreover, it is desirable that there should be at least two teams in the VTB United Youth League. In the city, through the joint efforts of sports schools, UOR No. 1, Zenit, more and more young basketball players appear who need to create conditions for sports improvement. Only a few, for a number of reasons, will be able to compete at the level of the United League and the Euroleague. Some people need more time to play at a higher level. Someone from the main team of Zenit may need additional game practice, as in the case of Andrey Toptunov, who was loaned out to Superleague-1 for a short time and immediately became one of the leaders there, and we are waiting for him back in a very good conditions. Many talented pupils of St. Petersburg basketball who have chosen professional sports as their profession are forced to look for work in other cities and clubs. Obviously, we need a full-fledged system, and we will definitely come to this. Moreover, we are already taking appropriate steps. We have already explained that we were forced to refuse to participate in the Super League due to the lack of our own players who are ready to play at this level, and this, I emphasize, is a temporary measure.

- There was an April 1st joke about ZhBK "Zenitochka". Are there any plans to implement it today? (Maxim Kolyanov)

- If we evaluate plans to expand the intra-club system in terms of sports, then now the presence of a Super League men's team or a farm club is much more priority.

A post shared by Zenit Basketball Club (@zenitbasket)

- Do BC Zenit plans to build their own arena? (Vitaly Greben)

- Zenit wants to grow and develop as a big club. For this, it is definitely necessary to have a modern material and technical base, which will make it possible to create conditions of the highest level for the training process of all club teams, and the main site, at least, must comply with the Euroleague regulations, which imply a permanent license. Of course, we want this to happen sooner or later, we hope that it will someday become a reality.

- When is it planned to get a license to play in the Euroleague without being relegated? (Maxim Kolyanov)

- To the question "when?" I can't give a clear answer yet. I can only say that both the club and our sponsors and fans want Zenit to play in the Euroleague and compete with the best clubs in Europe.

- Is it possible to put more neutral commentators on the channels of the Gazprommedia holding on the games of BC Zenit, especially with games against CSKA. (Maxim Kolyanov)

- I think that fans of any club regularly find some kind of bias towards their team from the media and match commentators, and often there is a fair amount of subjectivity in this. In order for commentators and other specialists to treat the club and the team with the same respect as CSKA, it is necessary, first of all, to achieve at least most of the merits and regalia that the “army” club has. And we will definitely try to get the fans of our rivals to ask for more neutral commentators in the matches against Zenit.

- Is it possible to change the medical staff of the club? (Maxim Kolyanov)

- I didn't quite understand the question, but if we are talking about problems with injuries and illnesses during the season, then it is hardly worth blaming the medical staff for everything, there is a whole range of factors. In addition, in December, the main team changed the head doctor and his assistant. The most experienced specialist Yevgeny Rozhenkov is in charge of the medical headquarters. Since this season, we have hired a physiotherapist, a rehabilitation specialist with 20 years of experience in one of the best clubs in Europe - Panathinaikos. Every year we seriously invest in medicine, the working conditions of medical personnel are improving, new highly effective equipment for treatment and rehabilitation appears. To characterize the work of our specialists, you just need to see in what schedule they are forced to work and with what intensity, especially in the conditions of the next viral wave. But based on the experience of this season, we will certainly pay even more attention to the issue of injury prevention and improving conditions for rehabilitation. Now the main thing is to make sure that the team approaches the decisive games in the optimal composition.

- What is the process for preventing injury to players? Will there be a "Zenith Insider with Players" in the future? (@jasinka766)

– We take injury prevention very seriously. Starting with the organization of the training process and an individual approach to each player. Even from the pre-season stage, the condition of the players is monitored using the most modern GPS tracking equipment. In addition to the medical staff, the state has a special trainer, whose name is Yaroslav Yalovchuk, who is responsible for injury prevention, as well as recovery and rehabilitation. Each player is individually prepared for both training and games. Medical rooms in the club are equipped with special physiotherapy equipment that allows players to recover faster after intense exercise. Before this season, the most experienced specialist Ioannis Zygouris, who has vast experience in injury recovery and prevention, moved to us from the Greek Panathinaikos. But, despite all our efforts, this basketball year with injuries and illnesses, we have an absolutely gloomy picture. Naturally, in our sport, with any injury, an element of chance plays a big role, but no one writes it off as some kind of bad luck and failure. Our task is to draw the right conclusions from each case. As for the insider with players like Zalgiris, we will definitely think about this idea. Thank you.

- Is there a psychologist in the club? Very often in the game it is his work that the players lack (Sergey Kalachikhin)

- At the moment there is none, and there is no need for it. I think I understand what you mean, but all questions about the motivation of the team and individual players, their psychological stability and other aspects of mentality are within the competence and influence of the coaching staff and the sports director, and they do an excellent job with this.

- Why did the club's social media work better in the 2020/2021 season than now? (Maxim Kolyanov)

- Perhaps you mean that there was more information. In the current season, we primarily focused on the quality of content, recognition and adherence to the seasonal style. I agree that there should be more information, including from the team, about the players, more news. We are working on it and will try to make it so that you feel it in the near future.

- When can we expect an update of the repertoire of the hosts in the arena? Just some bazaar barkers working on the principle that the louder the better. Pre-match show before the introduction of the teams, sluggish indistinct boring video. Where is the energy? Where is the power? Where is the charge? Does anyone in the club pay attention to this? (Victor Tarasov)

– The voices of our hosts Anton Zabelin and Artem Ivanov are familiar to everyone throughout all seasons, and I think most of our fans perceive them as an integral part of the game. But we will definitely discuss your remark with them and take into account the wish for the video.

- How do you evaluate the performance of the eSports team at the Russian Championship? Are you planning to continue @zenitcyber's participation in Russian interactive basketball championships and cups? (@alexaldohin)

- I think this performance should be considered successful and it is imperative to continue this project further.

- Will football fans come to the stadium? (Maxim Kolyanov)

- In my opinion, the integration of football fans into basketball should be natural. We are all Zenit, our arenas are nearby. To fall in love with basketball and begin to live this game, most people only need to visit the games a couple of times. If you are talking about a single game with Red Star Star, when there was a massive visit of the active part of the football fans, then after that we had feedback, and we have an understanding of how to do it in the future so that the football spirit adapts to the basketball atmosphere as much as possible.

- When can we expect games at the Ice Palace or are these still plans? (Maxim Kolianov)

- There were plans to play in the Ice Palace this season. We were in talks about holding games there with Real Madrid and Basque Country. Unfortunately, the deterioration of the epidemiological situation, and, as a result, measures to limit attendance made this idea inappropriate. We will wait for the right moment, we want to collect a full house in the "Ice".

- How do you plan to win new fans? (Maxim Kolyanov)

- Of course, first of all, by the appropriate team play and marketing moves.
