How to tryout for overseas basketball
How to tryout for overseas basketball
How To Get An Overseas Basketball Tryout TODAY
You Want An Overseas Basketball Tryout…
Playing basketball overseas will only become a more and more highly-desired job as more information is shared about the industry (you can stay tuned to me for that) and more players have the ability to share more about their experiences through social media, YouTube and the like.
Desiring a job doesn’t mean that you’ll actually get one, though. You have to cut through the fat, so to speak, and get yourself seen.
While the ideal process for getting hired to a professional basketball job is that a team comes directly to you with a contract offer — which you sign and then go start playing — it doesn’t always happen so smoothly.
Sometimes you’ll have to “work for food,” and get signed via a tryout with an overseas basketball club.
Tryout (noun): a test of the potential of someone or something, especially in the context of entertainment or sports.
If you’re reading this, you probably know what a tryout is — most sports teams at every level have them every season.
College teams call them “walk-on tryouts,” held for the wanna-be players who were not recruited and are not on scholarship.
In baseball, it’s Spring Training — and the players who don’t make Opening Day rosters usually end up in the minor leagues.
In the NBA and G-League, it’s called “Training Camp,” and more players get invited to training camps than actually end up on the opening night rosters.
Simply stayed, a tryout is your chance to show what you can do on the court in front of the powers-that-be. They then make a decision about whether to offer you a roster spot or not.
How quickly “they” (coach, management, ownership etc) make a decision is 100% at their discretion.
I’ve seen players get one-day tryouts, week- and even month-long “trial” periods during which players like you join the prospective overseas team and do everything they do: practices, games and all.
This article’s purpose is to share with you four specific methods that any player can use to get an overseas basketball tryout.
(DISCLAIMER: Getting a tryout still requires you to perform and earn your roster spot — consult HoopHandbook if you need help with skill development.)
1) Show Up Where They Are
In short: be in the country or town where your desired team is based, contact the team directly, and offer to show up on your own volition (and your own dime) to prove yourself as a worthy player for that team.
This is the overseas basketball version of (literally) walking on.
Requirements:
- You must identify a specific team (or teams) to which to make such an offer. How will you decide what country or what team(s) to target???
- You’ll have to actually be in (or travel to) the country or town where your desired overseas team is for this to work. Unless you’re traveling for pleasure, backpacking across the world, or just happen to be living in __________ (name of foreign country), I don’t know why you’d otherwise be there.
- Technically, you could arrange a tryout this way and then fly from where you are to where that team is — but this incurs the investment of an international flight ticket, the cost of housing, and your food while you’re there — all with zero guarantees of anything coming from it.
- If you’re gonna use this option, I would suggest that you reasonably hedge your bets; i.e. know someone on the “inside” of a team who can assure you of a solid chance of making the roster, or having some other business in that country other than just a hope and a prayer of making a team.
2) Let Your Agent Do Their Job
This assumes, of course, that you have an agent.
If you do, then trust your agent to do what an agent does: market you and help you get the right playing opportunity.
A good agent should be considering factors other than just, is this a team that I could play for?
That may be how you are thinking, but your agent would also be considering the reputation of the team, its coaching staff and management, the likelihood that you’ll actually receive the money owed to you, and whether your joining a specific team actually advances your career (depending on where you’ve played before, certain countries and leagues would be steps forward or backward for your career progression).
Not to mention that a good agent has key relationships that you don’t have — which means, their calls and emails get answered where yours would not.
A good agent would know and handle all of this on your behalf.
If you have a good agent, don’t get in their way. Stay in shape and be patient. If you don’t trust your agent to do this, they shouldn’t be your agent.
3) Have a Friend Who Can Get Your Foot In The Door
How it works: you have a friend, maybe an ex-teammate from college or the pros, who has a job somewhere.
(This option requires that you actually have a friend who’s employed overseas. Without that “plug,” this option isn’t for you — move on to point #4.)
Because they’re your friend, they invite (or allow) you to come to their overseas living space and stay there temporarily while you execute everything from point #1 and pitch yourself to local teams — minus the flight and housing expenses.
If you’re really lucky, maybe your already-employed friend recommends you as a player for the same team they’re already on and literally walks you into the gym with their personal co-sign.
Consider yourself super-lucky if this happens.
I know a player who got a contract this way — I’m not comfortable saying whether or not he would have ever gotten a deal without it. Luck matters in life.
I’ve known of some players who did this one successfully. Personally, athough I’ve had friends playing overseas, I never used this — because I was either already employed, or didn’t seriously consider it. But I have seen it work.
Use this option, along with all the others I share here, at your own risk. There are no guarantees in this game.
4) Earn Your Way In, The Old Fashioned Way
Plain and simple, you get a tryout based on you showing your game and a team taking interest.
How you would show your game —
- Exposure camp attendance
- Agent marketing you
- Touring team
- Pro basketball academy
A team can see you this way, and though they’re maybe not comfortable offering you a full-fledged contract, they are OK with giving you a chance while they get an up-close look at you.
While it’s not a season-long contract, this — a tryout offer from a team — is an INFINITELY better position to be in than to be just another unsigned player who’s on the outside looking in.
So don’t turn your nose up at it out of foolish pride. Take it and prove your game.
***
So there you have it: 4 ways to get a tryout with a professional overseas basketball team.
Keep in mind that there are thousands of players trying to get a playing contract right now, and this is a cutthroat business. Every opportunity counts.

Basketball owes its appearance to the “duck on the stone”. That was the name of the medieval game, which suggested the idea of the ball and basket game to its creator. A smaller stone was placed on a large stone, and the players knocked it down with their pebbles. How did the game transform into modern basketball, and what does it look like now?
James Naismith , a college teacher from the USA, tried to make physical education classes varied and not boring. At that time, while walking 1891 year, the students were constantly doing gymnastics in the classroom and were not united by some kind of gambling sport. Then Naismith came up with the idea of tying two baskets to different sides of the gym. He divided the students into two teams and invited them to compete in who would throw the most balls into the opponent's basket. It is hard to imagine, but at first the players practically did not move, they passed the ball to each other while standing still and threw it into the basket with both hands, from the chest or from below. After a successful throw, one of the players had to climb up the stairs and get the ball out of the basket, because then it did not have a hole at the bottom! Nevertheless, the game began to gain popularity, in which her father and inspirer played a role, spreading his experience beyond the college to other educational institutions. The game gained popularity in the US, then in Canada. Basketball solved the main problem - involving a large number of students in the game, becoming a collective game. Basketball appeared in Russia a little later, at the beginning of 1919.00s. The Mayak Society organized the first teams and helped in mastering the rules.
In 1932, when the first conference of national basketball associations was held, International Basketball Association (fr. FIBA) was founded. Already in 1936, basketball was included in the program of the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin. This was followed by the first world championships for men and women. And if at first the association planned to regulate amateur basketball, then later professionals also received admission to international competitions. The most famous basketball league - National Basketball Association (NBA) based in the USA. The best athletes in the world aspire to play there. The league's star athletes are also recognizable and famous as movie actors or famous musicians. Traditionally, the American team is a favorite in international tournaments, but over time, other countries have also improved their level of play and began to show outstanding results.
The final rules of basketball were established in 2004 and have not changed since then. Two teams are located on the site 28x15 meters. The ring with the basket is located at a height of 3.05 meters.
There are 10-12 people in a team, 5 of which are on the field. The number of substitutions is not limited. The object of the game is to get the ball into the opponent's basket and not to hit your own basket. The ball is only allowed to be thrown with hands. It is forbidden to just run with the ball, you need to lead it, that is, constantly knock on the floor.
For hitting the basket, the team receives a certain number of points:
- one point for a free throw;
- two points for a close or medium distance shot;
– three points for a shot from outside the three-point line. It is located at a distance of 6.75 meters (7.24 in the NBA).
The team with the most points wins. The average performance of matches is about 150-200 points. The game lasts 4 quarters of 10 (12) minutes each. If the winner is not identified, then overtime is assigned - 5 minutes of extra time, and so on until the winner is revealed.
During the match, teams take offensive and defensive actions. When the team hit the opponent's basket with the ball, it is passed to the opposing team, which begin their attack.
Important elements in basketball are:
- throw when the player throws the ball into the basket;
- rebounding when, after an unsuccessful throw, the players try to take possession of the ball after the rebound;
- interception ;
- a block shot when a player buries the flight path of the ball before or during the throw;
- transfer ;
- dribbling ;
- command positions .
In basketball, fouls are counted and if a player scores 5 personal or technical fouls, he will be forced to leave the court.
The game is played with a special ball - this is the only inventory in the game. Its diameter and weight is determined by the rules, basketballs are one of the largest and heaviest for all ball games.
Athletes do not have any elements of protection, only their uniform, T-shirt and shorts. The main thing is that the clothes do not restrict movement.
What to look for when choosing shoes for basketball, we examined in detail in the article: read.
One of the most popular games in the world, basketball attracts with its speed , dynamics and intensity of the fight . The game is contact, constantly keeps in suspense. Required to be equally proficient as technical skills for making throws and other elements of the game, and thinking tactically , anticipating the opponent's movements. And although in basketball there are different roles for players, each of them is universal and can play in any position. Basketball develops reaction and quick decision making . Constant rhythm changes, jumps and accelerations make basketball an energy-intensive sport, but in the process it is not so noticeable due to the strong concentration on the game. Basketball players are physically developed and have good jumping ability. And, of course, like any team game, basketball has team spirit - to win, you need to work together and work together.
All you need to start playing basketball is a ball and a shooting ring. And you can attach it right in your room! And don't let the constant jumping and throwing scare you, because as Bill Russell, multiple NBA champion, said: “As you know, in any culture, people jump for joy at the moment of the highest happiness. Jumping is an internationally recognized expression of joy, and basketball is a sport that is built on jumping. ..”.

Our today's hero Alexander Kudryavtsev is a master of sports of the Republic of Belarus, a nine-time champion of the country, a gold medal winner of the Cups of Belarus, a bronze medalist of the Ukrainian and Polish basketball leagues. Kudryavtsev was also recognized four times as the best basketball player in the country (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2017), and in February 2020 he was inducted into the VTB United League Hall of Fame.

How basketball came into my life
All my childhood was spent with the ball and on the street. When I was in the 2nd grade, my father was transferred from Minsk to Postavy for military service, where I started going to the outdoor games section. A few years later they returned to the capital. My father then became the head of the sports company of the SKA aviation regiment, so I had the opportunity to often come to the big hall and spend almost all my free time there. In general, as a child, I was an active child. Passing an obstacle course at the stadium, survival lessons in the forest, table tennis, football - I took part in all this along with soldiers from the sports company almost daily. Then, in my opinion, in the 6th grade I decided to go to the handball section, but due to the lack of outstanding growth data, they immediately made me understand that they did not see prospects in me. Getting angry in a sporting way, he decided to go the other way and signed up for basketball, where over the years he managed to prove that anthropometry does not always play a key role on the court.
First coach
My first coach was Vadim Nikolayevich Aleksin. I will always be grateful to this professional in his field for how he influenced my development in human and sports terms. He also managed not only to instill a desire to play basketball, but also to contribute to my further development. Vadim Nikolaevich taught me to appreciate and love basketball, which eventually took one of the main roles in my life.

When I realized that basketball is more than just a hobby
Perhaps the final decision to connect my profession with basketball was made in those years when I studied at the university in Grodno. I got to a new city in 1997 at the age of 17. Then it was almost impossible for me to gain a foothold in the "Grodno-93" of those times, since really high-level players were gathered there. At that time, first of all, an internal struggle with oneself began. I set the task not to give up and work, despite all external circumstances. I remember how then I agreed to participate in any competition, regardless of their rank (the championship of ZhES, regions, factory teams, etc.) in order to be able to just play. Then, after a while, Mikhail Feiman and Anatoly Yakubenko called me to the team created on the basis of BNTU and the city of Minsk. There I got everything that a young basketball player needs: playing time, the trust of coaches and ambitious teammates.
The first professional team in my career
The Grodno-93 team was the first professional club in my career. Once there, I was overwhelmed with completely different emotions. It was both scary and curious at the same time. In that season 1997-1998. spent an average of one minute on the floor. I remember how, when receiving the gold medal of the national championship, I could not get rid of the feeling that I did not fully deserve it. Only many years later I realized that you can’t be so casual about even one minute spent on the site, because it is worth daily plowing in training.

First experience as a legionnaire
After graduating from university in 2003, I decided that it was time to try myself in some foreign championship. I was 23 years old, I was full of strength and confidence. In addition, this year I was invited to the national team for the first time, as part of which I managed to perform at international competitions in Egypt. Then, together with the team, I had to go to another tournament in Ukraine, but I made a rather adventurous decision not to go there, but to go with the team from Lida to a tournament in Poland. I remember how then, by my actions, I caused misunderstanding on the part of Alexander Alexandrovich Borisov, who at that time was at the helm of the national team. But, despite the fact that at that time my choice seemed illogical and non-standard to many, this kind of adventure helped me to make myself known - a month later I signed my first contract abroad with the club from the Polish Extraliga Koszalin.

Debut for the national team of Belarus
For the first time in the jersey of the national team in official competitions he played in the EuroBasket 2005 qualification match against the team of Albania. Then we won on the road, and my debut turned out to be quite good: coming off the bench, I managed to score 20 points in less than 15 minutes of playing time. Since that moment, he has held 74 official meetings for the national team in a row, not counting various kinds of international tournaments and friendly meetings.

The brightest moment in the national team
Still, if you think about what was the most memorable moment for me as a player of the Belarusian national team, that very victory over the Slovenes in the framework of prequalification immediately pops up in my memory World Cup 2019. Beating the reigning European champion at home with the support of their fans was unforgettable. Also, I can't help but mention our victory over the Poles in the EuroBasket 2017 qualifier. Then, in 2016, we did the impossible in their arena: we won with a difference of “+19”and regained their chance to win a ticket to the continental championship. So close to getting into the top tournament as we had never been before, but an unfortunate defeat in the final qualifying match from the Portuguese, unfortunately, deprived us of this opportunity.

Club career
The period spent in Poland was a key one for me. Having trained and played under the guidance of Igor Grischuk in the Charny Slupsk team for three seasons, he gained invaluable experience and necessary basketball knowledge. I am convinced that thanks to this specialist and his approach to business, I managed to reach a new professional level, becoming one of the best defenders of the Polish extraliga. Those tricks and subtleties of the game that he showed and explained, the methods of presenting information, the ability to motivate - it was simply unrealistically useful and interesting for me. With his help, I realized forever that such concepts as relaxation, underestimation of the enemy, lack of discipline are simply not compatible with professional sports. Grischuk is a fighter to the marrow of his bones, being next to whom you also acquire the same desire and desire to win. No less significant for me was my period of career in Tsmoki-Minsk. With full confidence I can call this club my family. During the years that I spent there, I managed to get on the floor against the giants of European basketball, and even win over some of them. I will say this, if the period of my career in Poland gave me a map of big basketball, then Tsmoki paved the right path on it.

A new life stage
In 2019, I decided to end my playing career, and it's time to look for myself in a new field. To be honest, initially I wanted to stay in basketball and be something useful to our sport. However, upon reflection, I realized that so far I still don’t see myself as a coach. Therefore, when an offer to work as a manager of the women's national team of Belarus appeared, I was very glad to start my new life stage in this role. It so happened that I took up my job duties in the midst of events: first, it was necessary to prepare all the documentation for certification at the Ministry of Sports, and then literally a month later I had to travel with the team to the EuroBasket 2021 qualifying match in the UK. I confess that I have never before had the opportunity to work with documents, draw up orders and estimates - in general, deal with all the organizational issues of our delegation. But circumstances forced me to quickly master all the necessary nuances and subtleties regarding the solution of these issues. Colleagues from the RCOP for team sports and federations were very helpful here. Then in the UK for the first time sitting on the team bench during the game, I felt in a completely new role. It was very exciting to be there not as a player, but from the side to observe and experience the events on the floor. I note that I am very pleased to work with our girls and the coaching staff. All of them are true professionals with a responsible attitude to their work. In addition, I know firsthand the whole basketball kitchen from the inside, which helped me get used to a new place quite easily and quickly.
Solemn farewell from big sport. 2020
Why is basketball the best sport?
Having devoted about 30 years of my life to this sport, I can safely say that basketball is the best ball game.
