Who's Playing

UAB @ Western Kentucky

Current Records: UAB 16-4; Western Kentucky 10-9

What to Know

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will be returning home after a two-game road trip. WKU and the UAB Blazers will face off in a Conference USA battle at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday at E.A. Diddle Arena. UAB will be strutting in after a win while the Hilltoppers will be stumbling in from a loss.

It was close but no cigar for WKU as they fell 86-83 to the Florida International Panthers on Saturday.

Meanwhile, UAB was able to grind out a solid victory over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs on Saturday, winning 83-76.

WKU is expected to lose this next one by 3. However, those who like betting on the underdog should be happy to hear that they are 3-1 against the spread when expected to lose.

The Hilltoppers came out on top in a nail-biter against the Blazers when the two teams previously met in March of last year, sneaking past 64-60. WKU's win shoved UAB out of the playoffs, so they have a target on their back.

  • The best achievement of the Russian men's team is 3rd place at the 2014 World Cup in Moscow. The current world champion is Serbia. The Russian women's team won the 2017 World Cup and came second twice more (2014, 2018). Current world champion - Italy

The World Cup is also called the World Championship, and in principle this is not a mistake. In football, there are also two names in parallel: "World Cup" is more common in the world, "World Cup" - in Russia. FIFA doesn't mind.

But 3×3 basketball is the only correct name for the sport. The word "streetball" can hide games with a different number of participants and according to different rules. But only 3×3 basketball is included in the Olympic program. His motto is now appropriate: "From the streets to the Olympics." Everything became too serious, and it was time to get rid of the "street" prefix. Moreover, you can play not only in the open air.

Still, the best of streetball remains in 3×3 basketball. These are great street views. Now many tournaments are held both in halls and even in shopping centers, but the top one is to play basketball against the backdrop of the Prague Castle or the Eiffel Tower.

In Amsterdam, a 3x3 basketball court will be installed in one of the iconic places - the Museumplein.

How 3×3 basketball is played

Photo: © Jamie Squire / Staff / Getty Images Sport / Gettyimages.ru

The main difference from “classic” basketball is that they play on one hoop. They took half of the standard court (in 5x5 basketball, the dimensions are 15x28 meters) and shortened it a little more to adjust for dynamism and the number of players.

Another feature: for hitting from close and medium distances in 3x3 basketball they give 1 point (instead of 2), for an accurate throw from behind an arc with a radius of 6. 75 m - 2 points (instead of 3). And this is very important, because in the parquet version of basketball, a long-range shot is only one and a half times "more expensive" than usual, and in the street version - twice. In colloquial speech, long-range shots in 3x3 basketball are habitually called "threes", so don't let yourself be confused.

The ball in 3×3 basketball is also its own, special. First, ribbed. Secondly, it is slightly smaller, size 6 (in 5×5 this size is used only in women's tournaments - men play with "seven"), but at the same time the same weight as a "standard" men's basketball.

The surface of the site is also different. 3×3 basketball is played not on parquet, but on special mesh plastic. It is better suited for open air: it passes both liquid and street dust. Such a court does not have to be constantly wiped.

Rules

Only 4 players per team (3 players on court + 1 substitute). There are no official coaches in 3×3 basketball. That is, they are, but they sit only in the spectator stands and do not have the right to prompt during the game (technical foul for violation). So during the game, the team is on its own. Time-outs are taken only by players. Which combination to play is also up to them.

Yes, here's another question: if they play for one ring, how do they not get confused?

In 5x5 basketball, the transfer of possession from one team to another is easy to visualize: run to the left - run to the right. There is no such thing in 3 × 3, so they came up with a rule for taking the ball over the two-point line. If a team A player throws and misses, and a team B player takes the rebound, then he cannot attack immediately. First you need to get the ball past the two-point line. You can take him out yourself with a dribble, or you can pass to the partner standing behind the arc (then you don’t have to go out yourself). If you forget about it, it will turn out that you are attacking in your ring. The good news is that your opponents won't get points for this. Bad: you too, they will also take away the ball.

3×3 is much faster than regular basketball, and here teams play several matches a day (at the World Cup - no more than two, but in other tournaments there are 4). The attack here is given half as much - only 12 seconds, not 24. And the entire match lasts 10 minutes of pure time. You can finish it ahead of schedule - if one of the teams scores 21 points (it is considered a special chic to score 22 if you throw a two-pointer with a score of 20).

But if after 10 minutes there is a draw, overtime is played. Not counting time, just up to 2 points scored. They can be scored with two throws - or one long-range one. If 20:20 is played in regular time, then the game will not stop after 21 points in extra time.

There are no personal fouls in 3x3 basketball (technical and unsportsmanlike exceptions), but it is very important to keep an eye on team fouls. Until you have accumulated 7 fouls per team, only fouls on the throwing opponent will be penalized (1 penalty for a foul on a one-pointer, 2 for a two-pointer). If the opponent scored with a foul - both the ball will be counted, and an additional 1 penalty will be thrown to you.

But starting from the 7th team foul, the opponent will throw two free throws, even if you broke the rules 10 meters from the ring. And this is very dangerous: on the scale of 3x3 basketball, even two points is a lot. Your affairs are very bad if you have scored 10 or more team fouls: then after the free throws, the opponent will also retain the right to attack.

You cannot qualify for the Tokyo Games directly from the World Cup, but you can earn important ranking points that are given for participating in all tournaments (both in national teams and with club teams).

From 18 to 21 June — group tournament. There are 5 teams in each group, respectively, all of them have 4 matches at this stage. The schedule is designed in such a way that the two Russian teams do not overlap on days: men play on Tuesday and Thursday, women play on Wednesday and Friday. Playoffs on Saturday and Sunday.

Selection for the 2020 Olympics

Finally, the most important thing: the Olympic selection. Basketball 3×3 is a new discipline, and only 8 teams each for men and women will play at the first Olympics. Of course, this is very little. But Russia has good chances. We explain.

You can get to Tokyo through qualification, but there is a very big competition: 20 teams for 3 places. There is one more "small" qualification - for countries that were not represented at the last two Olympiads by either men's or women's teams in 5x5 basketball. The Russian national teams missed Rio 2016, but were in London 2012, so this selection is not for us.

The most reliable selection method in Tokyo is through the national ranking. Here, the system is approximately the same as in tennis: for each tournament, the player receives points. The higher the level of the tournament, the more points. The 9 best tournaments of the year are summed up in the player's personal rating, and the points of the top 100 players in the country are summed up in the national rating. The more massive 3x3 basketball is in the country (it is best with this in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, and now in Russia too) - the better for the country's rating.

It is according to this national rating that on November 1 this year, three men's and three women's teams will be selected for the Olympics (but no more than two from the continent). If the selection was carried out according to today's rating, then Russia would get into Tokyo with a margin. Among men, we are second after Serbia, among women we are generally first.

Photo: © globallookpress.com

The top of the national ranking now looks like this.

Men

1. Serbia - 34300515

2. Russia - 28992070

3. China - 20478360

4. Slovenia - 20299815

Women

1. Russia - 8263 729

2. China - 7664782

3. Mongolia - 6023116

4. Romania - 4935859

To keep it that way, you need to perform well in Amsterdam.

what to expect and where to watch

The 2022 World Basketball 3x3 Championship will take place in Antwerp, Belgium from 21 to 26 June . At the preliminary stage, 20 teams participating in the men's and women's tournaments will compete in four groups of 5 teams each. Group matches will take place from 21 to 24 June, with the winners of each quintet advancing directly to the quarter-finals. The teams that took second and third places in the groups will play an additional play-off for this. All matches of the play-off stage of the 2022 World Cup will take place on 25 and 26 June. Men's and women's teams of Russia do not take part in the current tournament.

The main favorite of the men's tournament is the Serbian national team, although at the moment it does not own any of the major titles in 3x3 basketball. The current men's world champion is the US team, and the first-ever Olympic tournament in the history of this sport in Tokyo 2020 was won by the Latvian team. Nevertheless, it is the Serbian team that is not only the most titled in the world (it won four of the six world championships held), but also approaches the tournament in Antwerp after the first starts of this season in excellent playing tone. Serb leader Dejan Majstorović was named the MVP of the recent World Tour in Manila, and the 34-year-old "Maestro" will compete in Antwerp for his fourth World Championship gold medal in his personal collection.

Olympic champions from Latvia and the US national team, which is always powerful in any kind of basketball, may well compete with the Serbs. Do not discount the home team, which will not only perform in front of the home stands, but also has a real basketball star 3x3 in its composition Thibault Vervoorta .

In the women's tournament, the main favorite for the 2022 World Cup is the US team. The Americans will compete in Antwerp with a different roster from their Olympic gold in Tokyo, but their current line-up of players – led by 2014 World Champion Sierra Burdick and Hayley van Liet – is truly stellar. An additional motivation for the Americans should be the desire to regain the championship title, since after winning the first two 3x3 Basketball World Championships (in 2012 and 2014), they then never made it to the final. And at the three previous similar tournaments, they were left without medals at all.

There are also bright stars in other women's national teams - Laetitia Guapo in France, Sonya Greinacher in Germany, Lili Wang in China.
