How hard is basketball

Why is Basketball So Hard?

Basketball is a multi-facet sport in which it involves many skills needed to perform a single movement to score a basket. I have played many sports and none of them in my opinion were as hard as the game of basketball to be effective and good at the sport.

Why is basketball so hard? Basketball is hard because it involves the whole body to perform many movements at once while completing the desired skills on the court. Balance, agility, and coordination all work together along with the fundamental skills of basketball. Many hours of practice and repetition are needed to be proficient in performing the necessary skills to score a single basket in the game of basketball. Performing the right decisions on the court also adds to the difficulty of the sport.

Basketball is very unforgiving, you could practice day in and day out and perform poorly when it matters most, that is just the way the game is. While on the flip side when a basketball player stops playing for a few weeks they can see a major decline in their game from taking a break. It goes to show working on skill development must be done every 24 to 48 to improve and still, that won’t guarantee success but that’s where it starts.

Is Basketball Hard to Learn?

Basketball is not hard to learn the rules of the game, it could be explained in less than 5 minutes. But performing the fundamental skills in the game while following the rules as a beginner can be very difficult. But with a good coach and practice, this can be achieved.

Here are just a few whole-body skills that a basketball player needs to develop:

  • Running forward and backward
  • Change of pace and directions
  • Jump stops
  • Pivoting and footwork
  • Moving without the ball
  • Jumping and sprinting
  • Lateral shuffle.

The great thing about developing skills in basketball in this day and age is the unlimited resources on the internet to help you do so. The problem comes when players are unsure where to start or what they need to do in order to learn to play the game to get better. They may jump from one skill to the other, without giving it sufficient time and practice.

Some coaches, writers, and even companies have a tendency to over-complicate basketball. While introducing new techniques, movements, and new gimmicks, this can really confuse players who haven’t even tapped into a piece of their natural potential.

For example, If you don’t have the necessary strength or power to shoot with proper form behind the free-throw line, you shouldn’t be shooting any further until you become proficient inside the free-throw line. At this point, You need to continue to work on the fundamentals until you have built the confidence needed and are able to perform that skill consistently. Then if you need a tool that could further help then by all means use one. That’s not to say all tools are bad, I think we believe that a tool is a magic device that will guarantee results if we use it. ( Tools I mean shooting aids etc.)

Basketball doesn’t need to be complicated, keep the game simple. You will see slow and steady progress throughout practice and training, which is completely normal. If basketball was easy there would be no NBA, nobody would play it and it wouldn’t be a sport.

Is Basketball Hard to Get Good At?

Some players have natural talent and athletic ability that any sport they touch they excel at, many of these players are in the NBA. As an average athlete who plays the game of basketball, yes basketball is very difficult to get good at. You have to play every single day for hours a day, you need to practice, practice, and practice some more. You really need to love playing the game or you will burn out quickly which can leave you being disappointed at your own progress.

To put things in perspective I was not the most athletic player in regard to being able to jump high and run faster compared to other basketball players. But I was a good athlete in regards I could play multiple sports and hold my own. With basketball, I spent a whole summer trying to get better for my senior year of high school by improving my game. The said practice regimen I used? It was nothing special or complicated. I shot 300 shots before going to play pickup basketball all day at the YMCA and then I would come home and shoot another 300 shots, usually those 300 shots in the evening were shots I missed in the pickup games. I rinsed and repeated that process every day, all summer.

After the summer, my shot was “WET” so to speak. I had my own competition come up to me and ask me what I did, I just shrugged and said practice. I hit a few game-winners that year put up career-high numbers and even scoring 44 points in a single game going 19 for 23 from the field. Rinse, repeat, it’s simple.

Why is Shooting a Basketball So Hard?

Shooting a basketball and making a basket on a consistent basis may be the hardest skill in the game. You are never shooting the ball from the same spot on the court all while having to adjust to the many variables the game throws at you, from the defense to the shot clock, to even how you receive a pass when you are ready to shoot.

You rarely shoot the same shot in a game, think about it how often are shooting the same shot twice. You may shoot from the same spot but the defense may be closing in with a hand up, or you are now shooting on the opposite side of the hoop because it’s the second half.

Many players just don’t understand that just like a golf swing or the swing of a baseball bat professional athletes are constantly working on their form. Players like Steph Curry and Klay Thompson have perfect form, the form that works for them in which they perfected over and over again with all the shot mechanics completely in sync. Rarely is their shooting form ever off, even when Steph Curry is shooting from halfcourt it looks the same as when he shoots it from the three-point line. They do not stop practicing form, that may be a secret in itself to becoming an elite shooter. Are you practicing perfect form?

Why am I so Bad at Basketball?

You practice you play and you practice some more and you feel like you are not getting any better at basketball. This leads to frustration, low confidence, and you are just not having fun playing anymore. Who can blame you, lets be honest, nothing is fun if you’re no good at it.

But I am here to tell you don’t be so hard on yourself. Growing up I played a lot of sports and excelled at many always being one of the best on the teams I played on. But basketball was very different and I played a lot of it. The game as we know is very technical and difficult to bring all the necessary skills together to perform a skill such as putting the basketball into the hoop.

It took me a lot of shots to become a good shooter and a heck of a lot more to be a great shooter, I knew I had to be obsessed with getting better if I wanted to improve. We are talking about hours and years of practice here. Hard work and consistency is key. Going through scoring slumps and wanting to quit because nothing feels like its going right, happens regularly, you get passed it and you become mentally tougher each time.

Again don’t be so hard on yourself, really ask yourself this one question. Have I been doing all that I can to get better? If you are just going through the motions and not trying to perfect shooting form and fundamental skills along with actually putting in quality practice time in skill development, well you may need to rethink how you are using your time.

I discussed in my last article how too much pickup basketball might not be helping your game overall. I talked about how if you played 2 hours a day 5 days a week of pickup basketball you may think you are improving your game when in actuality you are only shooting a small amount of shoot through the week. (Maybe 500 shots). What is needed to improve your game or any skill? It is all about volume and repetition day in and day out.   We’re talking up to 500 shots a day. You can check out the article by clicking here.

Advice to Get Better

The most important thing for you as an athlete is to have fun, don’t forget that, when something isn’t fun we tend to put less effort and energy into it. My advice is to continue to play a lot of basketball but be conscious of how much your playing in relation to working on skill development. Try to put a lot of repetition in every fundamental skill you want to improve at. If you want to work on a move, master that move until you are able to perform the move without thinking on the court. It becomes natural and fluid on the court during a game.

I like to use the one move a week where you practice the move repeatedly non stop if your playing every day that week it should feel somewhat natural by the end of the week. While still, that is only an introduction to that move you still need consistent practice to keep it sharp in your bag of tricks.

Do try and look up videos on youtube about moving without the ball, and other helpful concepts about basketball to boost your IQ. This alone will make you a better player without having to play the game, you can apply certain things right away from memory. That’s it, I hope that helps.

Why basketball is hard - The Only Colors

When we last left off on KJ's Mysteries of the Basketball Universe, we were talking about how getting more shots at the rim is a good thing for your offense. While the fact that two-point jumpers are so inefficient is pretty surprising, the fact that shooting the ball right at the rim is the most efficient form of offense isn't. The question then becomes: How do you get more shots at the rim?

That's the kind of question that neither conventional nor tempo-free stats can tell us much about. But we're starting to get a glimpse of some of the tools the insiders have at their disposal to provide more context on how to structure a basketball offense (or defense) more efficiently. Our favorite enemy blogger, Mr. Burkhardt, has been able to access some of Synergy Sports' detailed scouting-based statistical breakdowns. And the numbers he's posted on specific offensive situations have been interesting.

The two most straightforward ways to get the ball to the rim would seem to be:

  • Beat the defense down the court in transition.
  • Pass the ball directly to a player near the rim (in the post).

But neither of those strategies appear to be as efficient as you might think. Transition offense numbers from mid-December:

Keep in mind those numbers were posted exclusively against (generally weaker) nonconference opponents. While the numbers for several teams are quite healthy, they include breakaway steals where there's a sure two points at the end. It's not clear that pushing the pace will necessarily be an efficient strategy at the margins--particularly for MSU.

For low post offense, the numbers are even less stratospheric (these are only a week old):

Even a team like Indiana, with an elite offensive center, comes up short of a point per possession when they throw the ball into the post. And MSU ranks only in the middle of the conference pack.

So how do teams get the ball to the rim and score points efficiently in the half-court offense then? Well, here, courtesy of Synergy, is a peak at MSU's efficiency numbers under different offensive situations (extracted prior to the PSU and OSU games):

It turns out that the most effective offensive plays are the ones that are the hardest to plan: offensive rebounding (you're not trying to miss the shot, after all) and cutting (which usually happens in reaction to another offensive move and the subsequent defensive adjustment). Basketball is hard. It's not as easy to manufacture the specific result you want as it is in, say, football. Players have to be able to adjust and react.

In terms of generalizing those statements, I've only seen two other sets of this kind of data--for the MSU defense and the UM offense--but they tend to confirm that transition offense, cutting, put backs are the most efficient forms of offense (along with having Trey Burke run the pick and roll--but that's not an option available to everyone).

A few miscellaneous notes:

  • It appears MSU's transition offense has gotten more efficient of late. This is a good thing.
  • I assume "Miscellaneous" covers possessions where the offense turns the ball over before it can get into a specific offensive play. We should do less of that.
  • MSU almost never passes the ball to the guy rolling off the pick in the pick and roll. And whey they do, it doesn't usually go very well. A lot of that may just be the cost of having someone of Derrick Nix' girth setting most of the picks. Overall, the pick and roll is a very inefficient source of offense for MSU--although that's at least partly because it's the team's go-to strategy when the shot clock is running down.

Going forward, my biggest concern offensively (now that the turnover bug seems to be receding) is rebounding. MSU ranks just 8th in the Big Ten in offensive rebounding percentage during conference play. The lack of depth means that players can't attack the glass with as much abandon due to fatigue and/or concern about picking about fouls. That makes the offensive efficiency calculus that much tougher. (Perplexing on the other end of the court: Allowing opponents to shoot a league-worst 50.5% on two-pointers in conference play. A topic for a whole other post.)

The positive trend is the one that Tim covered last week: the emergence of Adreian Payne as a top-tier offensive threat. Payne actually ranks as MSU's most efficient shooter in all three areas of the court right now. He's making 78% of his shots at the rim, 54% of his two-point attempts away from the rim, and 75% of his three-point attempts (limited sample size on the final category, obviously). If he can continue to transcend the overall limitations of the field goal shooting heat map--and if MSU can find enough ways to keep him involved in the offense throughout the game--he could be a major boost to the team's offensive efficiency down the stretch.

To close, a couple big picture thoughts on the Synergy data:

  • As fascinating as it is (I've only scratched the surface of what the data covers here), it's probably a good thing I don't have regular access to this stuff. I think it would end up crowding out other things in my life--like, say, "holding down a job" or "being able to maintain a family."
  • As much as most basketball coaches don't talk in "tempo-free" terms, we shouldn't think they aren't doing advanced analysis. Tempo-free analysis paints a more accurate picture than conventional stats do in terms of big picture trends, but that's mostly stuff that coaches (but not fans or most commentators) are going to figure out through their own in-depth film study and analysis. And the data coaches have access to has a lot more value in terms of diagnosing specific problems or building new strategies. Given that we know our coach devotes as much resources as anyone to film study, we'll forgive him for citing rebounding margin in his public comments.

Basketball for adults: brief rules, benefits, contraindications

Eminent professionals are always in the spotlight in any sport. But those who practice at the amateur level are always much larger. That's the way things are in basketball, thousands of athletes don't pretend to create a career, they just play for their pleasure and health. The benefits of adult basketball in promoting physical health and psychological well-being, training affects the body, mind and mind. In this article, we will analyze what is the effect of basketball on the body of an adult, what benefits it provides, and whether it is possible to increase height with its help.

Basketball is fascinating, even if you are not playing, but watching the matches from the spectators' seats. Training strengthens physically and mentally, consider its impact.

Improving physical health

Intense running, sharp acceleration from a standstill, high jumps, maneuvering tricks - all this strengthens the body and ensures overall physical development. The effect extends to the respiratory and endocrine systems, muscles, heart and blood vessels, and immunity.

Increase in endurance

With regular training, the level of endurance becomes much higher. In this sport, endurance is just as important as throwing and jumping skills. In this case, endurance is understood as the ability to intense activity for a long time without reducing efficiency. Even the perfect execution of technically complex techniques will not help with a lack of this indicator, the basketball player simply cannot withstand the loads and will fail before the end of the match.

In parallel with endurance, volitional qualities and coordination of movements develop. In the training basketball programs there are separate classes aimed at developing the resource of the respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems, while accelerating metabolic processes. This means that the athlete will be able to easily endure extreme conditions and high levels of stress. This becomes possible due to the coordinated work of all systems in the body.

Keep in mind that each workout will be very energy intensive. In any training schedule, athletes should eat well, monitor the ratio of nutrients in their diet. If nutrition is inadequate or unbalanced, it will lead to malnutrition. Other essential conditions for training are listed in the article "How to learn to play basketball?".

Muscle and vestibular development

Amateur games may not be as dynamic as professional matches, but even they will have a lot of sudden movements, jumps, complex maneuvers, changes in position in space. This is how the vestibular apparatus is trained, it is responsible for adapting to changes in body position. People with a well-developed vestibular apparatus do not know what motion sickness in transport and motion sickness are. Valuable quality, especially for those who travel a lot.

The muscular system will also develop. Basketball involves all muscle groups, as it combines a whole range of diverse movements: running, jumping, squatting, turning, jerking, throwing. From such a variety, the body quickly comes into tone and retains it.

Because of this diversity, basketball is considered an injury-prone sport. In training, it is very easy to pull a muscle or injure a tendon. To avoid this, it is necessary to thoroughly warm up before the loads and follow all the recommendations of the trainer so that the development is harmonious.

About the effect on the immune system

The immune system is not something that immediately comes to mind when thinking about the benefits of basketball. However, regular exercise brings high loads that strengthen the immune system. The action occurs in several directions:

  • activation of antibodies and leukocytes. These immune blood cells are responsible for the formation of general immunity; with aerobic activity, they begin to spread throughout the body faster. Thanks to this, they can track down and neutralize harmful alien elements more efficiently and quickly. This is how the prevention of infectious diseases, including viral infections, occurs;
  • airway cleansing. During training, the respiratory system begins to work more intensively, due to this, it is better cleared of bacteria and other pathogens. The risk of contracting a respiratory disease is reduced;
  • purification of the excretory system. Toxins and other harmful compounds are removed due to increased sweating, the establishment of proper digestion and the genitourinary system.

Each session causes an increase in body temperature, a natural reaction to sports activity. Under such conditions, it becomes more difficult for viruses and bacteria to multiply, which also reduces the risk of many diseases. Another positive condition for immunity: a decrease in the production of stress hormones that weaken the body.

Strengthening the respiratory apparatus

While playing basketball, the respiratory rate increases significantly, a person takes more breaths in and out per unit of time. The frequency rises to 50-60 breaths per minute, while the air consumption is 120-150 liters. The lungs adapt to the high intake and expand, as a result, they are able to let in even more air and supply the body with even more oxygen. Increasing the vital capacity of the lungs has a positive effect on the health of all organs.

Improvement of the heart and blood vessels

Any constant feasible physical activity has a positive effect on the state of the cardiovascular system. Basketball training is no exception, they stimulate the strengthening of the vascular walls, normalize blood pressure and improve blood flow, and prevent congestion.

A basketball player's heart rate can rise to 180-230 beats per minute, while blood pressure does not exceed 200 mmHg.

However, even this pressure can be very dangerous if there are certain contraindications. Before you enroll in the basketball section, you must undergo a medical examination. The doctor will not allow you to attend classes if you have diseases of the heart and blood vessels, the musculoskeletal system and the respiratory system. Let's take a closer look at contraindications below.

Effects on vision

Basketball players improve the efficiency of visual perception. They have well-developed peripheral vision, those parts of the visual apparatus that are responsible for the boundaries of vision work better. As a result, the boundaries become wider.

It's all about the specifics of the game. On the court, it is not enough just to look carefully in front of you. To become a successful player, you need to follow your opponents and see the actions of your comrades, this allows you to sensitively and quickly respond to changes in the situation. The visual scope becomes wider, this happens automatically as experience grows.

It is also beneficial that athletes constantly have to shift focus from close objects to those that are further away. They also focus on moving objects. This is a real workout for the eye muscles. Scientific studies have shown that basketball players are more sensitive to light signals than the average person. For those who exercise frequently, this figure is about 40% higher than the average.

Weight Management

All high intensity aerobic activities contribute to weight loss and weight control. As mentioned above, a lot of energy will burn in the classroom, about 900-1200 kcal. Not only calories from food will be consumed, but also your own body fat, if any. The body will become not only slim, but also toned, as fat deposits decrease, and muscle mass comes into tone.

Agility development

Agility is a whole complex of qualities. For a person to be dexterous, he must have a quick reaction, a sense of balance, coordination of movements, speed, and flexibility. All these skills come from training and games, the situation on the court is constantly changing, and players need to respond adequately to this. Moreover, they have to synchronize their actions with teammates. To increase dexterity, the training programs contain complex techniques that are mastered on the basis of simple elements.

Investing in mental health

These benefits are not all. Basketball players are distinguished not only by good physical health, but also by an advantageous set of psychological qualities. This applies to all areas of sports, including street sports. The beneficial impact will be similar, but there are still differences between the disciplines, you can learn about them from the article “How is street basketball different from ordinary basketball?”.

Main positive aspects:

  • general strengthening of the nervous system. Brain cells begin to work faster, better controlling the work of all internal organs;
  • improving communication skills. Team games teach to work together and achieve goals by common efforts;
  • leadership development. There are no secondary players here, each has its own very important role;
  • gaining self-discipline. Basketball is interesting and exciting, but it is also very difficult. Overcoming difficulties makes a person more disciplined and successful in other areas of life.

We analyzed the impact of basketball on the physical capabilities of a person and his moral character. The development of all these qualities is important not only for children, but also for adults.

How does it affect growth?

Hard question: why are basketball players so tall? Is this sport only for tall people, or does it increase height? Actually, it's both. It will not be possible to significantly increase growth, since it almost completely depends on genes. But due to jumping, the spine is stretched, thanks to which people become a little higher.

Contraindications

Any active sport has strict contraindications. In this case, these are:

  • diseases of the heart and blood vessels;
  • pathologies of the respiratory organs;
  • diabetes mellitus;
  • epilepsy;
  • problems in terms of the musculoskeletal system.

If you have any chronic illness, you should consult your specialist doctor. He can approve adult basketball or ban it because of the high risks.

Basketball | Sports Hall of Fame

In 1992, a basketball department was opened at the Children's and Youth Sports School No. 2 on the basis of secondary schools No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 9.

The best physical education teachers (part-time coaches: Peregudov V.A., Yakovleva O.V., Gonchar V.V. Buichik O.L., Semyonova T.A., Zamyatin I.S., Moiseev V.A., Okunev A.V., Magomedova M.A.) begin a 20-year program for the development of children's basketball in the city of Gatchina and the Gatchina region, with the direct participation of Honored Workers of Physical Culture of Russia Tatyana Nikolaevna Slutskaya, director of the sports school and Kovalev Gennady Andreevich – Director of the DFC PNPI.

Teams of girls and boys were raised, which played the city Spartakiad of schoolchildren in 3 age groups. It was a children's basketball marathon, which traditionally took place at the DFC PNPI.

With the advent of young coaches Yurkevich S.N., Yurkevich Yu.A., Vorobyova O.A. Basketball has reached a new sporting level.

Now the department operates on the basis of 9 educational institutions of the city. The girls' teams of the Gatchina Youth Sports School No. 2 have been the winners of all regional competitions for 10 years, as well as the winners of the superfinal of the IES-BASKET SBL (2014). The teams include: Logvinova Irina, Smolova Vladislava, Soroka Polina, Skakunova Yana, Zelenkova Anna, Lybina Nadezhda, Maiorova Kristina, Denisenkova Anastasia, Glushachenko Anastasia, Mordinson Anastasia. All girls are candidates for master of sports of Russia. With their victory, they won a ticket to Milan to watch the games of the European Championship.

In 2019, the team consisting of: Fedorova Victoria, Mikhailova Anastasia, Dutova Polina, Krivokoneva Alexandra, Filippova Alena, Paddy Julia, Ryabikina Xenia, Balakina Yana, Demskaya Darya, Timarova Anastasia, Shubina Maria, Voevodina Anna in the final of the North of the Western Federal District of the IES-BASKET SBL championship of the 2018-2019 season. among the girls' teams in Arkhangelsk, they became winners, and in the superfinal of the IES-BASKET 2019 SBL championship in Tolyatti, they took 4th place.

In 2018, Gatchinskaya Pravda correspondent Irina Khrustaleva interviewed Sergei Yurkevich, head basketball coach of Youth Sports School No. 2. We present excerpts.

Is this a sport only for tall people?

– No, the trends of modern basketball have already changed. If earlier the whole game was built around one or two tall players, today a large number of basketball players are of average height. They have good ball control and can make quick decisions.

– How difficult is this sport?

- Complicated. Basketball is a contact sport. Athletes have to push, sometimes play hard enough. There are injuries and bruises. But, no offense will be said for my fellow coaches, you need to understand that this is not ballroom dancing. Nevertheless, basketball very harmoniously develops children not only at the physical level, but also mentally. Making decisions promptly and carefully will come in handy in later life .

– How do you motivate your athletes?

– We do not force anyone. For 20 years of his coaching work, he did not expel a single child from the section. Gatchina Youth Sports School No. 2 fully provides athletes with uniforms and balls. We are supported by the regional sports committee. Children only need a desire to attend training and play.

– How can I sign up for your basketball department?

– Every spring we hold open training and testing for everyone. Tests include: running 20 meters without a ball, running 20 meters with a ball dribbling, standing long jump, standing high jump. We also look at the growth of parents, find out the growth of grandparents in order to understand what we can expect from the further development of the child.

During the school year, parents can also bring their child to us. I want to note that it is better to start playing basketball from 8 to 10 years old.
