RUSSIA - POLAND - 79:82 / Russian Basketball Federation
The Russian men's team lost to rivals from Poland in the second match of the group stage of the European Championship - 79:82.
The Poles entered this game with a victory in the first match against the Bosnians. Our team, having lost to the Israelis at the start, looked somewhat nervous today, but during the first half it adequately resisted the Polish basketball players. In attack, our players demonstrated good interactions: there was a lot of movement, passes, discounts for the "big ones" who broke into the three-second zone. At the same time, the snipers on the arc, who attacked with a good percentage, did not remain on a starvation diet.
The Poles chose a similar tactic. Under the shields, the most experienced Marcin Gortat and the young Przemek Karnovsky exerted serious pressure. Against his left half-hook, our players have not found an antidote. The 21-year-old center, who plays for the University of Gonzaga, did not fail a single segment, allowing Gortat, the “Polish hammer”, to save energy for the end.
On the 3-point arc, Adam Waczynski showed himself in all his glory, he made 4 out of 5 long-range attempts, often attacking through the hands of our defenders, and scored 23 points in total. Mateusz Ponitka kept up the pace of the game with fast passes, two of which he finished with overhead shots.
The Russian team won the backboard (41:31), but the Poles were better at converting fast breaks and also scored more points after the opponents lost the ball. Our basketball players were in the role of catching up most of the match, in the course of the second half the Poles came off by 9 points. They acted more diverse and sharper in attack, and in defense they managed to disrupt our interactions, so every point was given to the Russian team with difficulty.
The intrigue in the match was revived by Dmitry Khvostov's long-range shot and two free throws realized by Vitaly Fridzon: "-2" 6 seconds before the end of regular time. But our team failed to achieve overtime.
Andrey Zubkov became our top scorer with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal.
Head coach of the Russian national team Evgeny Pashutin:
— We expected a serious fight in the match with Poland. We lacked concentration, especially in the second quarter, when Waczyński was allowed to scatter, and the Poles felt the game. Our guys came out without aggression, they could not put pressure on this sniper on the perimeter.
- We lost the second quarter - 18:23, played passively. The result of our team depends on how we defend ourselves. Yesterday we missed 76 points, today - 82. This is a disaster! At the moment, we have no defense, with the exception of fragments in the first and final quarters. We really need to focus on defensive play. But for this, all 12 people must fight like lions, play hard, on the verge of a foul. When only one five acts in this way, there will be no result.
Russian team captain Anton Ponkrashov:
We can't think too much. There is no need to calculate anything, you just need to go to the game with Finland, forgetting what happened in the match with Poland. Do not sprinkle ashes on your head and tear your hair out. There is no time for this. You need to play and win, while you should not think about your opponents, but about your own game. Let them think how to stop us. We have two fourth numbers in our team, who have both speed and throw. We must play our own basketball, and not adapt to someone else's.
Forward of the Russian national team Semyon Antonov:
— We didn't cope with Vachinsky, he scored several three-pointers in a row. And then there was a loss of concentration, for two or three minutes we made several mistakes, for which the Poles punished us, gaining easy points. Then came the hasty throws, as we tried to catch up with the opponent faster, because time was running out. Today we didn't have the best percentage of three-point shots, but with our composition, I mean growth indicators, long-range shots are one of the main trump cards. It's a shame to start with two defeats. But nothing is lost yet. You have to play and believe in yourself. We win together and we lose together. So you need to remain a single team and a real team.
Also in our group, Israel beat Finland 79:66, while the French were stronger than the Bosnians 81:54.
After two rounds our group is led by the French - 2-0. Also, two victories for the Israelis and the Poles. In fourth place is the Russian team - 0-2. Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina also have 0-2.
Tomorrow the Russian team will play with the Finns. The match starts at 16.00.
