Kansas wins 2022 national title: Ranking the Jayhawks' all-time NCAA Tournament-winning teams

The Jayhawks won the NCAA championship by beating the Tar Heels on Monday, joining three other KU title-winning teams

USATSI

NEW ORLEANS — Kansas won the national championship on Monday night with a thrilling 72-69 victory over North Carolina. It is the fourth title for the Jayhawks in ten championship games and the second for coach Bill Self. That ties him with Villanova coach Jay Wright for the most among active coaches.

The four Kansas titles have been spread out in different eras. The 2022 title came 14 years after the championship in 2008. That is the shortest time between championships for the Jayhawks.

Let's take a look at how this team ranks among the four Kansas national champions.

2008 - Kansas def. Memphis 75-68 in OT

Kansas entered the tournament as a No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season 31-3. Despite that, the Jayhawks were fourth in the final regular-season AP poll. They were part of the only NCAA Tournament in which all four No. 1 seeds made the Final Four. Kansas beat Memphis in overtime after a last second Mario Chalmers 3-pointer tied the game at the end of regulation. Kansas had seven future NBA players on that team, including all five starters.

1952 - Kansas def.

St. John's 80-63:

The 1952 Jayhawks finished the regular season 24-3 and 11-1 in the Big 8. The MOP of the NCAA Tournament that season was Kansas' Clyde Lovellette who averaged 35.3 points per game in the tournament. Lovellette played 11 seasons in the NBA and was a four-time All-Star.

2022 - Kansas def. North Carolina 72-69

The current Jayhawks were 28-6 in the regular season and the No. 1 seed in the South Region. They featured All-American Ochai Agbaji, who was the MOP of the tournament and a likely first-round draft pick in the upcoming NBA draft.

1988 - Kansas def. Oklahoma 83-79

This is arguably the most memorable of the Kansas championship team. Nicknamed Danny and the Miracles, the No. 6 seed Jayhawks made an unlikely run to a title behind the play of Danny Manning, who averaged 27.2 points per game. Manning had a 15-year NBA career and Kevin Pritchard also spent some time in the NBA. This is still the only No. 6 seed to win the NCAA Tournament.

Chris Babb

Chris Babb, a native of the US state of Kansas, started playing basketball in the Oak Ridge school team after moving to Texas. Chris' adult professional career began while playing in the D-League with the Maine Red Cloves. Then the Boston Celtics signed a contract with Babb, for which Chris played only 14 games, as he could not finally gain a foothold in the National Basketball Association.

A few years later, Babb moved to the European continent and joined the Ratiopharma team. The next club was Lokomotiv Kuban, with which Chris went to the Eurocup final.

Since then, Chris Babb has represented Bahcesehir Kollezhi, Promiteas, Telecom Baskets and Bnia Herzliya. The athlete’s personal achievements include silver at the German Championship and the Eurocup, entering the second symbolic five of the D-League and the first symbolic five of the German Championship, as well as a successful performance at the All-Star Game of the D-League.

Whom should farmers root for in American basketball?

In the tops of gifts under the Christmas tree, farmers can find everything - from rubber boots and overalls to an ATV. We, knowing that there are many sports fans among the readers, and the best gift for a fan is an interesting match, we offer to plunge into the world of American college basketball for the New Year holidays.

When Ukrainian clubs leave for the New Year holidays, sports life overseas does not stop. The basketball season in the USA is just beginning and it's time to choose a team to your liking. Turning to college basketball rather than the NBA shouldn't seem counterintuitive. With a high level of play comparable to the best professional leagues in Europe, student teams offer a sense of kinship and belonging that is inherent in pre-professional sports. For some, the atmosphere in the basketball hall with a student orchestra, ceremonies, rituals and official events will remind you of your own student years.

In the next two winter months, conference championships will be played in college basketball, as a result of which the best teams will go to the March Madness. Among the teams, many participants represent the oldest agricultural universities in the country. During working hours, their scientists sequence the wheat genome, develop pest-resistant crop varieties and launch experimental quadcopters, and in the evenings, along with students, parents of players and tens of thousands of fans, they fill the arenas.

What is an agricultural university in the USA?

Understanding the need to train specialists in agricultural professions came to Americans in the middle of the 19th century. While US industry was growing, the classical education, overseen by the clergy, could not meet the increased demand for skilled engineers and mechanics. The decline in the teaching of agricultural disciplines (it was often necessary to write out professors of agronomy from Europe) fell on the heyday of the Homestead movement, which predetermined the further fate of the country's agrarian education.

Homestead movement (from "homestead" - manor, land) - US land reform in the middle of the 19th century, when the country's government gave everyone plots for business activities to develop new territories. In the course of this program, over the entire history, 2 million plots of 115 million hectares (12% of the country's territory) were distributed. The plot could be obtained not only by any American, the head of the family over the age of 21, but also by a foreigner. It was during this period that the American middle class was born, and America began to be considered a land of opportunity.

It is impossible not to mention that the territories that were distributed to everyone, although formally under state jurisdiction, were in fact the residence of indigenous Indians, who were sent to reservations in lands often unsuitable for agricultural activities by a special law of 1867.

After the adoption of the Homestead Act in May 1862, on July 2 of the same year, the Morill Act (Land-Grant College Act) was adopted, according to which all states were allocated 12 thousand hectares of land (in proportion to each seat in Congress) for the creation and financing activities of colleges providing agricultural education. In total, 32.5 million hectares of land were distributed - from 205 to 2,250 thousand hectares per state. The lands were sold or rented out, and all the profits were directed to the needs of education.

Established as a result of this act, agricultural colleges and colleges that received funding from the sale or lease of land began to be called landgrant (from land-grant). Their tasks included training specialists in demanded specialties for the needs of the region, conducting research activities and introducing scientific achievements among local farmers. From then to the present day, the activities of American educational institutions are built on three pillars: research, education, and practical implementation.

Graduates of the Storrs Agricultural College (University of Connecticut) planted a willow tree in gratitude. 1893

Insect control, research into fertilizers, and increasing knowledge of technology were the pressing problems of American crop production at that time. Crop advice was needed by the newly formed homestead farms.

Many urban residents who received land had no idea about agriculture. Often they chose a site because of the size rather than the quality of the soils. Despite warnings about the "purpose" of such plots (grazing), they plowed the land and failed. Subsequently, mismanagement will be named one of the main causes of dust storms that swept the central states.

In 1890, a law was passed for the additional appropriation of Land Grant Colleges from the resulting land fund. In 1908, in the United States, about 65 universities in the country received funding for research, namely, the construction and maintenance of experimental stations on the basis of colleges in exchange for detailed reports on the work done. Since most of the studies were "custom-made" and solved the local problems of local farmers, each experimental station received additional funding for research of a scientific nature, which was supposed to develop the country's agricultural science.

A century later, this system will make American college research one of the most efficient in the world. Billions of dollars are spent annually on it, but even more revenues to the country's budget from the results of the system. Today, the capitalization of research by individual universities reaches the size of the financing of industrial corporations.

Collegiate Basketball USA

Today there are 76 Land Grant colleges in the US, many of which have strong college teams. More than 350 student teams of the first division are divided into conferences. The five strongest (according to the composition of the participants) are called the Power Five:

  • Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC),
  • Big Ten Conference,
  • Big 12 Conference,
  • Pac-12 Conference,
  • Southeastern Conference (SEC).

SEC and Big Ten conferences can be called real student agricultural leagues. Of the 28 participating teams, 20 represent historic land-grant colleges (10 in each conference). Among them are teams representing universities that contain top agricultural programs recognized in the world - the University of Florida and Michigan, Texas A&M University. Among the sports leaders of the SEC conference is one of the most titled college basketball teams, the Kentucky Wildcats (8 national titles, the last in 2012).

If you love the competition of the best and do not understand why you should look at the amateurs, then US collegiate sports is for you. The best young players are represented there, who literally tomorrow will receive millions of contracts, and today they play for a scholarship. And literally! Players may not sign advertising contracts, receive expensive gifts or other financial incentives while playing for the college.

Few American NBA stars have played in the NCAA Collegiate League. Kobe Bryant and LeBron James immediately got from high school basketball bypassing the university to the NBA. But Michael Jordan, Hakim Olajuwon and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played three years in college, Magic Johnson played two years, Patrick Ewing and Tim Duncan played four years each.

Fourth-year student Svyatoslav Mikhailyuk and his parents receive congratulations from coach Bill Self before the last home court Allen Fieldhouse

Today, schoolchildren are in a hurry to become pros and often play only one compulsory year at the university level. So Zion Williamson ran for a scholarship at Duke University for a year, and after the first year he entered the draft and received a contract for $10 million a year.

Of course, it is problematic to interest future millionaires in science, and many professionals hardly remember who they studied at all. But in 350 teams of the first division against future millionaire stars, future physical education teachers, engineers, technologists and other specialists who will leave the sport with graduation from the university go to the floor.

And even if the number of future agrarians in the roster does not exceed a few people in the strong teams of landgrant universities, then they are certainly supported in the stands by teachers and students who form the backbone of the country's agricultural science.

Who should farmers support in student basketball?

College sports in America are a passion. Tourists and bored citizens go to see the NBA stars, real fans go crazy in the stands of thousands of college basketball arenas. The difference in the loudness of the stands of professional and student sports is colossal.

The identity of its graduates is built on the principles of an educational institution, decades after graduation they are drawn to the universities that raised them for annual meetings, they carry love for student teams through life. If you haven't graduated from American universities, here are some historical reasons for liking them and their teams.

Iowa State Cyclones

The largest university in Iowa has extensive research activities. The university was founded in 1858 and in 1862 became the first in the country to receive benefits under the Morill Act. In 1879It became the first public institution to establish a veterinary school. Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century, Iowa has been a leader in veterinary medical education. Today, the university has two hospitals for large (cattle, horses, camels, etc.) and small animals.

Historically, the university pays great attention to the analysis of the development of agricultural regions and the creation of methods for linear programming of agricultural production. Much research and discovery has been made in the field of plant genetics and the development of new highly productive crop varieties (especially corn).

Notable Representatives: NBA coaches Fred Hoiberg, Jeff Hornachek.

Season prospects: battling at the bottom of the Big 12 conference table to the ground. For a long time, it was the only land-grant college in the state, and therefore it had all the responsibility for training personnel for the region's industry.

Today, a large soil analysis laboratory operates on the territory of the university. In addition, K-State Research and Extension Soil Testing Lab analyzes plants, feed, seeds, and water for farmers.

More than 20 laboratories of the university conduct research in the field of ecological genomics. Much research is being done in the field of food safety, including plant pathology and product processing.

Famous representatives: NBA player Michael Beasley.

Season prospects: bottom of the Big 12 conference table.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

of the earliest campus buildings was the barn.

Oklahoma is one of the dusty bowl states. In the early 1930s, when farmers were particularly hard hit by dust storms, college students took part in a massive study to identify soil types and study economic activities in the region. Conclusions were made about the need to apply soil protection technologies that reduce wind and water erosion (terracing of fields, plowing perpendicular to the slope or wind direction, etc.)

University scientists have bred a cotton variety resistant to drought and insect pests - Oklahoma Triumph 44, developed a technology for the production and use of cotton flour as feed for cattle. Since 1937, a program has been established to develop the technology of growing wheat in the region. This made it possible to increase the area under wheat, while reducing the destructive effect of cotton monoculture.

Since the time of the dusty boiler and to this day, one of the main areas of work of the university is taking care of the condition of the soil. From 19In 1944, an association of flying farmers was established, which collects data on ongoing soil protection activities.

The state's failure to predict natural disasters (including the 1984 flood) prompted the creation of the Oklahoma Mesonet project. In partnership with the University of Oklahoma, meteorological data are monitored and recorded (every 5 minutes) at 121 automated stations.

Notable Representatives: NBA player Marcus Smart, US Olympic team coach Henry Aiba.

Season prospects: Big 12 mid-table contest.

West Virginia Mountaineers

West Virginia University is the only land grant institution to be deprived of funding by the state. The reason was the desegregation of the university in the 1950s. It was reinstated only in 2001. For this reason, and also because West Virginia is a mining state, less agricultural disciplines are taught there today. Greater emphasis is placed on medicine and healthcare.

Unlike cotton belt states, the university's agricultural research focuses more on aquaculture, horticulture, vegetable genomics, and plant breeding.

In West Virginia, the number of vegetable farms is constantly growing, so scientists are focused on developing cultivation technologies for greenhouses and breeding new varieties of plants that will increase the profitability of production. So in the field of genomics, research is carried out using the method of genome-wide analysis of associations. Quantitative signs of vegetable crops (yield, fruit quality, etc.) are compared with DNA sequences.

Notables: NBA legend Jerry West. 90,003 90,002 90,146 Season prospects: 90,147 Big 12 conference win, March Madness (NCAA final tournament).

Texas A&M Aggies

Among the American educational institutions that provide the best agricultural education, not all have strong basketball programs. For example, Ivy League universities - Cornell and Harvard - do not differ in achievements in team sports. They play in the Ivy League conference and have little to offer to the outside fan in terms of spectacle.

Among the top 30 agricultural universities in the world (and spending hundreds of millions of dollars annually on research), the University of Texas and Michigan have strong teams.

The University of Texas developed the LEPA irrigation system in the 1980s to conserve water and energy, generating a total of $48.5 million annually for the state's farms. The university's Insect Pest Management (IPM) program has developed approaches that used by 60% of Texas agricultural producers. Together with an increase in the effectiveness of pest control, the use of pesticides is reduced by 30%.

Extensive research activities are underway to develop varieties of crops that are resistant to diseases, as well as crossbreeding crops. The annual budget of these studies is more than $88 million.

Since 1949 (when the development of an aircraft for spraying crops began with the participation of university scientists), research is still being carried out to improve remote monitoring systems. Experimental UAVs fly over the 1,300-hectare Texas A&M Brazos Bottoms Farm. As part of the flights, not only monitoring tools are being improved, but information is also collected for work on plant breeding.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the contribution to the development of the agricultural industry in the southern regions of the country, a graduate of the botanist George Washington Carver University. He taught homestead farmers how to grow soybeans and peanuts to restore cotton-depleted soils. And in order to create demand for peanuts and sweet potatoes in the market, he invented 300 ways to process peanuts and 118 sweet potatoes as part of laboratory research. Including learned how to get flour, milk, ink, soap, cosmetics from peanuts, and sugar, vinegar, sweets, glue from sweet potatoes. As a result of his work, the south was freed from cotton dependence, and peanuts became the region's second cash crop.

Notable Representatives: NBA players DeAndre Jordan, Chris Middleton, Alex Caruso. 90,003 90,002 90,146 Prospects for the season: 90,147 fight in the middle of the SEC conference table.

Michigan State Spartans

Michigan State University became funded under the Morill Act in 1862, but since its inception in 1855, the Michigan Agricultural College was funded by state land grants. The positive example of the university in the future contributed to the passage of the Morill Act.

From the early years of its existence, the college paid great attention to research work to the detriment of the classical disciplines, such as the study of Greek and Latin. In this it differed from the vast majority of American colleges of that time.

University research in the first half of the 20th century contributed to the introduction of hybrid corn varieties (allowing local farmers to double crop yields), the establishment of a sugar beet industry in the state, the eradication of bovine tuberculosis, and the development of the Redhaven peach variety.

After 1925, when economic and social tasks were added to the tasks of a nationwide network of experimental agricultural stations, research activities expanded. Today, many of the university's projects aim to address the region's environmental problems, such as finding a sustainable way to rid the Great Lakes of sea lampreys or developing a pest-resistant soybean variety to reduce pesticide use.

Famous representatives: NBA player Draymond Green, NBA legend Magic Johnson.

Prospects for the season: fight for victory in the Big Ten conference, participation in the March Madness.

If you are ready to cheer for a team over a long tournament distance, then from the teams in the top 20 of the national rating according to the Associated Press, in addition to the mentioned West Virginia (9th place in the ranking) and Michigan (16th), 4 more teams represent Land Grant Colleges - Wisconsin Badgers (6), Tennessee Volunteers (7), Missouri Tigers (12), Illinois Fighting Illini (15).
