How Much Does It Cost to Play AAU Basketball?

The American Athletic Association (AAU) is a youth sports organization that develops youth sports and promotes physical fitness. It is competition among non-school teams. When does AAU basketball start? It runs from March to late June for elementary school players and March to July, with June off for high schoolers. But tournaments are going on throughout the year.

Enrolling your child in the program does not come cheap. Parents can expect to pay between $400 to $4,000 per summer depending on the team and club, the players’ skill, and the coach’s salary.

AAU basketball is confusing and a harsh landscape to understand. This material will help you determine if the AAU basketball program is worth it for you and your hoopster.

Can Anyone Play AAU Basketball?

Players who are not older than seven can start playing AAU basketball and can compete up to 19 and under.

It’s easier to find a boy’s basketball team closer to home than a girl’s program. Often, girls wind up playing in a boy’s team until they grow out a girl’s team or find an all-female group in another organization. AAU allows a team composed of girls and boys if there is no girl team around.

AAU has no room for beginners starting to know the basics of basketball. Players in the program have acquired the fundamentals and are playing up their skills to be better players. Before inking the registration sheet, ask yourself if your hoopster has the skill level to enter the program. Ponder on these things:

Skill and abilities

AAU is not a program for beginners. Most players have been playing basketball for a while and use the program to acquire an experience from an elite level of competition that they won’t get in their community.

You don’t want your hoopster to get discouraged at the start. Some programs teach the basics of basketball, like dribbling, shooting, and passing.

Goals

Define your goals. Will the skills be used in playing a more competitive level such as college basketball or the NBA? Most kids playing in AAU have parents who have played basketball for a long time, are currently playing, or love the sport.

Basketball is a fun sport; are you willing to invest time and effort to keep it enjoyable?

Travel

There are AAU games that require intercity or interstate travel. Traveling will bring you to unfamiliar territory; new players to compete with, new coach’s plays, and a new venue. The experience will step up your level of play from either good or bad competition.

What Does It Cost to Play AAU Basketball?

The cost to play AAU basketball comes with a price.

A parent or a player might ask how much it costs to play AAU basketball?

The cost ranges from $400 to $4,000 per year. We came up with a table showing the breakdown of costs involving AAU basketball players. There might be costs that were not included; these vary by team. The $ amounts are placeholders and cannot be used as a reference in preparing a budget.

Why is AAU Basketball So Expensive?

Families pay thousands of dollars for their AAU basketball player, hoping to land a college scholarship. Why is AAU basketball so expensive? AAU games require travel, and registration and coaching fees add to the program.

Out of Town Travel

AAU basketball requires travel, and players have to shoulder the expenses for airfare, gas, board, and lodging. There are about eight intercity or interstate journeys per tournament. It takes about $900 to defray the costs for every tripper. Prepare the same amount if you’re a parent accompanying your hoopster.

Competition breeds success. Out-of-town sorties will bring players to unfamiliar territory upping their skill level a notch higher. Facing new opponents, new plays designed by the coach, and a new environment will give them the experience to make them better players. Without out of town sorties, hoopsters will be playing against familiar players in their locale, taking time to develop their skills.

Team Fees

Team fees start at $50 and go as high as thousands of dollars for elite AAU teams. Think about LeBron James from the Oakland Soldiers, Mokan Elite producing Trae Young, Illinois Warriors featuring Dwayne Wade, the likes of Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter out of Patterson New Jersey, and Derrick Rose’s Mainstreets team.

Basketball Coach

The basketball coaches in the AAU earn between $29,500 to $51,500, with top earners receiving $70,500. The pay covers only regular games; practice sessions require additional payment.

Some teams have assistant coaches; some get paid, while others do it for free.

Referee

There are two referees in AAU basketball games. The fee for each referee starts at $20-35 for youth games and $45-$150 for competitive high school games.

Is AAU Basketball Worth It?

Criticisms are part of life, and there will always be a reason to criticize. Parents, basketball coaches, and alumni criticized AAU. Even NBA great Kobe Bryant says it is not teaching the fundamentals of the game to meet the requirements of modern basketball.

This material explores some of the criticisms and the benefits of the AAU program. Hopefully, parents and players can find the answer to – is AAU basketball worth it? Or at least to understand the issues to come up with a sound decision to join or not the AAU program.

Criticisms

Little or no practice

Basketball is a fun game, and not playing much or practicing takes away the fun. AAU doesn’t have practices; it’s just about scrimmages if they do. Practicing with someone improves your movements, dribbling, and shooting skills. And just playing basketball won’t make you a better player; practice makes perfect; it is the key to success.

Lack of fundamentals

AAU is no place for beginners; they don’t put time into the fundamentals. Look for a program that will teach your hoopster about the fundamentals of the game before joining the program.

Coaching

Many AAU coaches have little or no experience teaching and working with kids or young adults. Coaching in AAU doesn’t require a certificate; a self-appointed coach gathers 10-12 players in an age group and registers in the AAU program.

Burn out

If playing is your goal, you’ll have tons of it in AAU. However, it’ll be like a useless exercise, bringing your type of game from one game to the next. There is no time to learn and work on mistakes, no practice to execute plays. A player will bring his bad game to every game and tournament and can burn out.

Benefits

Time on the court

There are basketball scouts in the bleachers that are your ticket to play college basketball. Your time on the court depends on your ability; the exposure is worth it if you’ve got a game. Some of the games kids play are huge with the best talents around.

You have to earn your playing time by lighting up the stats sheet. Points, rebounds, assists, and less turnovers are the keys to more time on the court.

Competition

AAU tournament has excellent competition. The best players are gathered, bringing in talents from other cities allowing players to advance their game. Competition is fierce. There will be tough losses, challenging games, and tough plays; players and teams must deal with adversity.

These experiences will teach your player grit, determination, and toughness that will help them later on in life

Zero preparation

Without any scouting report, no practices, and no defensive game plan, a player is forced to react in real-time. Forcefulness makes a player physically and mentally demanding, building confidence to overcome roadblocks to be a better player.

Friendship

Basketball allows the players to make new acquaintances while having fun. Traveling basketball will enable you to meet new people and experience new places that you may never have.

Teamwork

Learn to play as a team going after competition. You’ll be able to read your teammates’ roles, personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. Embracing your role for the team’s benefit is a valuable life lesson.

Wrapping Things Up: How Much Does It Cost to Play AAU Basketball?

If you ask yourself, is AAU basketball worth it? This question is not for you but your player. Talk to your child; know his goals, needs, and wants. Before coming up with a decision, consider these suggestions:

Research the coach’s experience. Talk with him about their exposure to the game, skill development ideas, and travel.
Ask the club about the costs to avoid any surprises.
Check the club’s website look at the record of credibility. Seek information from alumni about their experiences.
Inquire about the tournament schedule. The club should plan ahead of time, be well organized, and be consistent with how they do things.

Finding the right AAU basketball program will be an excellent opportunity to develop your hoopster’s skills and a rewarding experience. Ending up with the wrong one will be a terrible experience in many ways.

The True Cost Of AAU Basketball

With AAU basketball coming to an end and school just around the corner it’s a great time to take a closer look at the expenses associated with participating in AAU. I took to Twitter to ask my followers from all over the country about how much they pay to be part of their team, what college exposure they receive, and if they believe AAU is worth the investment!

One of the primary advantages of AAU is that these tournaments bring together top talent from all over the country and as a result, these players get to experience an elite level of competition they wouldn’t usually face in their local neighborhoods. Matthew, a 15u player from Ohio, pays $500 to be a member of his AAU team but to him, it’s worth every cent because the tough competition has allowed him to test himself and grow as a player! There’s no denying that playing against better players challenges us to improve and brings out the best in us.

Another factor parents consider when deciding whether or not to pay for AAU basketball is the possible exposure the player may potentially receive from college coaches which they hope could lead to a free education. At any given tournament, hundreds of college coaches and scouts gather to watch up-and-coming talent in the hopes they’ll find players that have the skill set to take their program to the next level. To many parents, AAU basketball is often perceived as a worthwhile investment if there is even a chance it may lead to a college scholarship but in my experience, not every tournament is created equal when it comes to receiving exposure. Avree, a 17u player from Iowa, paid over $1200 to play for his AAU team only to find out that the majority of the tournaments his AAU program played in didn’t have many college coaches in attendance. When evaluating a program it’s important to find out if the team will be playing in tournaments that colleges actually attend because if the player isn’t getting noticed it’s probably not worth the investment.

When people calculate the cost of AAU basketball they often mention team fees and end their calculations there but the truth is there are many other expenditures that parents often overlook. These include the cost of hotels, plane tickets, gas money, food, sneakers, and sometimes lost pay for those who have to take off work to accompany their child to tournaments. I spoke with Derick Newhouse, the father of a talented 10-year-old in California, about how much AAU basketball has cost him this summer and the numbers are staggering. It usually costs him around $300 to join his AAU program and $50 a month team dues. In addition to the team fees, it costs him around $800 to $900 every time the team takes a trip out of town and the team takes about 6 trips every summer. When you combine the team fees and his out of town expenses the total falls in the range of $5100 to $5800. Derick was shocked when he took the time to think about how much money AAU has cost him this summer but he feels the networking opportunities AAU provides him and the relationships he has built with other coaches really makes the investment worthwhile. If your child is paying anywhere near $5800 you have to make sure you’re 110% committed to working hard like Derick’s family is or else you’re just wasting your time, money, and energy.

On the other end of the spectrum, not every AAU team comes with a huge price tag. There are teams across the country that are either sponsored by major shoe companies or are run by non-profit groups and as a result, cover all costs for their players. Jordan plays 17u for Greenwood Elite in Michigan and pays absolutely nothing to play on his team. Greenwood Elite not only takes care of the tournament entry fees but also pays for the hotels, flights and three meals a day for their players. AAU teams such as Greenwood Elite are not only hard to find but are also extremely competitive as the low cost attracts top talent from all over the state!

Last but not least I spoke with a 17u player from Michigan named Dasean. After investing large amounts of money into AAU it’s every parent’s hope that their child will play end up playing college basketball. In Dasean’s case, he’ll be attending Eastern Michigan University but not for basketball as he’s going to be focusing on his schoolwork. When asked if he would still consider AAU a worthwhile investment he said he’ll “never regret AAU basketball because it provided him with some of the best experiences of his life, created friendships that will last a lifetime, and had the opportunity to experience new places. ” In conclusion, AAU is without a doubt very expensive but it’s up to the parent to decide what he or she values and whether they’re willing to invest their hard earned money!

For the first time in Khanty-Mansiysk, the Open Regional Basketball Tournament started — AU "UgraMegaSport"

Today, on August 24, in the Universal Sports Complex-1 of Khanty-Mansiysk, the grand opening of the Open Regional Basketball Tournament among the teams of the LPR, DPR, Kazakhstan took place and Yugra - Yugorsk and Khanty-Mansiysk.

It is worth noting that the facility is new and this is the first major competition at USC-1. Vladislav Nigmatulin, Deputy Governor of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, drew attention to this fact, greeted the participants and opened the tournament: “Ugra has always been famous for its hospitality, many events of various kinds are held in our district. Today's tournament opens a series of major sporting events at the Universal Sports Complex. You are the first here. I want this tournament to become popular, traditional, so that the number of participants grows. Guys, I envy you and I myself would play here with great pleasure and train with you on this beautiful site, there were none like that in my youth. The ceremony was continued by a bright performance of sportswomen from the Federation of Sports of Ugra under the guidance of coach Yulia Voloshchuk, a theatrical and choreographic number "Shine of the North" from the creative team of the center for the development of dance sports and modern choreography by Natalia Rogina and the traditional parade of camp participants in the tournament.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Culture and Sports of Ugra Sofya Konukh, Deputy Director of the YugraMegaSport Autonomous Institution Oleg Dress and Soviet Russian basketball player, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, Olympic Champion Irina Sumnikova. During the ceremony, the champion was congratulated on the anniversary of "30 years since the victory at the Olympic Games 1992 years in Barcelona. And immediately after, a meeting with Irina Sumnikova took place in the USK-1 conference hall with athletes and all interested spectators of the tournament. She spoke about her achievements, about meeting with Michael Jordan, the story of victory at the Olympics, answered the athletes' questions, signed autographs, held a photo session with everyone and gave some advice to the younger generation:

“Don't waste your energy before the game. An hour before is sacred and 20 minutes on the site. Look for an audience for yourself - play for him. It helps. The rest - only by means of physics. Get ready for the game so that emotions do not take over and no one will unsettle you. Practice endurance and patience, and everything will work out. Sport is the norm! Guys, do it, and you will always have time to go to the cinema. God gave you the opportunity and chance to be in basketball, why are you here, think about it. Set goals and achieve them, don't be afraid to dream, play while playing. I played big basketball until I was 40. I beg you - do not give up the sport. Use every chance, ”the champion motivated.

Note that the first round of games started today. It was opened by the teams of Kazakhstan and Yugorsk. From the very beginning of the game, guests from Kostanay took the lead, scoring a point to the opponents in the first minute, thus opening the score. 25:71 - the result of the first meeting of the tournament in favor of Kazakhstan.

Coach Alexander Derbush commented on the victory of his team: “Some moments were very pleasing, as for the team game, the ball was moved from time to time just perfectly – this is not always the case with adult teams. The attacks were good too. I must say, the opponent allowed a little and was not particularly aggressive in the first half, so a lot worked out. Well, we, in turn, due to aggressive defense, were also able to create such a gap. It remained a matter of technology - to delay and build up. Everyone managed to play, even the young players of the team. Satisfied with the game! Such an account cannot but rejoice. There is little time for rest. The next game we have at 16:00 with the team of Lugansk. To be honest, the teams are all unknown and there is not much difference against whom to go out against - all the rivals are serious.

Next on the court were the hosts of the tournament against the guests from Makiivka. In the course of a stubborn and beautiful struggle, the team of Khanty-Mansiysk won with a score of 22:77.

“The opponents traveled to Khanty-Mansiysk for a day and, for obvious reasons, did not train all summer. They fought with us until the last second, and you know, I am grateful to them. Any game is not only a victory. The guys have added today, I'm happy with the outcome of the meeting. We, as a team, have existed since August 12th. We have 10 new players, now we are developing. The leaders of the team have not yet been determined. There was no time to find cons among the athletes. Today there was pressure on the opponents all four quarters,” said the coach of the winners Vladimir Grobman.

Danil Khanyukov, the captain of the Makeevka team, shared his emotions after the game: “So far, the team is not very good at resisting the opponent. A lot of mistakes due to the fact that there was a long break due to the special operation. But we try to catch up with what we missed. We try, but the opponents are very strong. At any expense, this is a great experience for us, it is very interesting to play with teams from other countries, especially in Russia basketball is more developed than in our country. In general, we really like it here. The city is beautiful, I would like to express my gratitude to the organizers - everything is at a decent level. ”

The teams of Kazakhstan and Lugansk opened the second round of games, where representatives of Kostanay were stronger. The score was almost equal in the first quarter, but Kazakhstan nevertheless seized the lead. 67:45. Luhansk team coach Oleksandr Bezuglov spoke about the mistakes of his wards: “For almost half a year we did not assemble a team for training. Judging objectively, today the team of Kazakhstan is really stronger. For us it is a great experience in every way. The guys looked at what an international tournament is. We're glad to be here."

And in the final game for today, Yugorsk and Makeevka met. From the first minutes, the leadership was intercepted by the Yugorsk team, by the third quarter the DPR was able to close the gap to one point, the score of the meeting was 55:50. According to the results of two periods, the Yugorsk team broke the victory. Team captain Konstantin Kiselev, who scored about 20 points to the opponent, told how this victory came to Yugorsk: “I think that the team showed itself quite well. We got together, discussed tactics and did not lose. The DPR is not a weak opponent. It was not easy for us to beat them. I think our secret is nerves of steel. Whoever is stronger in this regard wins. Tomorrow we have to meet with the hosts, during training we already played a friendly match with them and lost. Tomorrow we will try to win."

There are two competitive days ahead. Tomorrow, August 25, the third and fourth rounds will be played, four games will be held, where the semi-finalists will be determined. The winning team will be announced on August 26, the final day of the tournament.

Children and Youth Basketball Sports School of the Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren. N.K. Krupskoy has been preparing young athletes for more than fifteen years.

The purpose of the activity of the sports school is to create optimal conditions for the personal development of children and adolescents, the formation of the need for a healthy and safe lifestyle, the organization of reasonable leisure based on basketball.

Tasks:

- promotion of basketball among the younger generation; involvement of children and adolescents in systematic physical education and sports;

- promotion of comprehensive physical fitness and health promotion of students, achievement of an individual level of sports results of young athletes in the chosen sport;

- formation of skills of adaptation to life in society, professional orientation;

- identification and support of children who have shown outstanding abilities in the chosen sport, preparing them for admission to educational organizations that implement professional educational programs in the field of physical culture and sports.

Principal activities of DYUSSH:

- implementation of additional general educational programs in the field of physical culture and sports;

- organization and holding of mass sports events.

1. Children from the age of 8 are accepted to the Sports School for Basketball.

3.
