How to choose a basketball hoop

Goalrilla Basketball Buying Guide - Buy Basketball Hoop Near Me

So Which Hoop is Right for You?

A basketball hoop is a large purchase so it’s important to consider your needs to make an informed buying decision. We break down each of the factors to consider and the types of basketball goals to help you find the hoop right for you.

Top Considerations

A few factors to consider during your search for the right basketball goal are location, frequency of use, age of players, and budget.

An important factor to consider before purchasing your basketball goal is its location. To fully enjoy your hoop, you need to have adequate playing space that can accommodate the size of your hoop and the number of people playing on it. You want a minimum of 10 feet of concrete in front of your goal, but preferably closer to 15 feet which is the distance of the free throw line.

By far the most popular location for any basketball hoop is in a flat driveway. However, if you have an adequate budget and space and are looking to take your basketball experience to the next level, you may consider a dedicated court with two installed hoops on either end of a 94 ft by 50 ft concrete court.

For safety reasons, it is not recommended to place a basketball hoop in or overhanging onto the street where oncoming cars could harm players.

Lastly, be sure to check with your homeowner’s association and local laws, as some neighborhoods and ordinances prohibit goals near the street or in the driveway. If you plan on purchasing an in-ground unit, be sure to call 811 before you dig to mark gas or electrical lines that may not be immediately visible.

The two parts that are most heavily used and usually the first to fail on a basketball goal are the backboard and rim. With the backboard being one of the most expensive parts of the basketball hoop, you’ll want to ensure you purchase the right one from the beginning to avoid problems in the future.

All Goalrilla basketball goals come with a breakaway rim standard so you don’t have to worry about whether or not you can dunk on your goal. Compared to standard static rims, breakaway rims are used in college and the pros and have flexibility, that allow them to “break-away” or compress under pressure, transferring the shock of a dunk to the pole rather than the backboard, or even worse, the player.

The secret is in the spring that allows the rim to move slightly down during a dunk. No matter how often you use your goal or the intensity of play, your rim will be able to stand up to all the shots, dunks and late-night play it’ll experience.

A Goalrilla is an investment. If it’s your first time purchasing a basketball goal, it will be your last time. There are basketball hoops still standing since our inception in 1991. While proper care and maintenance are important, Goalrilla’s commitment to quality parts, durable design, and outstanding customer service are what really help to keep these goals in play.

No matter your age or your children’s age, there’s a Goalrilla that’s right for you. Most people looking for an in-ground basketball goal are also looking for adjustability, so their children can grow with the goal. All Goalrillas come standard with height adjustability from 7.5’ to 10’ so children of any age can easily adjust the goal to the perfect height.

Almost all youth basketball leagues set goals to 8’ or higher, regardless of age. Apart from the goal itself, the only other equipment that changes is the size of the ball. Younger children use a smaller ball, but will still shoot on an 8’ to 8.5’ goal until they reach around 11-12 years of age. Additionally, basketball sizes are different for men and women, even at the pro level.

If you or your children currently shoot on a standard 10’ goal now, you might be thinking you don’t need an adjustable goal. While adjustability isn’t a necessity, it’s a feature that will greatly enhance your satisfaction with the goal. After all, the whole premise of playing basketball or purchasing a goal is to have fun. And what’s more fun than dropping the goal to 8’ or 9’ so you and your buddies can throw alley-oops, windmills, and dunk just like the pros?

Adjusting the height of any Goalrilla can be done and in minutes and is so easy a 6-year-old can do it!

An in-ground unit is by far the most superior goal a consumer can buy. The quality, durability, and performance of a Goalrilla is unmatched. Budget will often determine the size of your goal. Some may opt to have a professional install their goal. These rates will vary from location to location but expect to pay in the range of $200-$500.

Goalrilla currently offers 4 lines of basketball goals, each with their own unique features. For example, our CV series, offers a Clear View backboard that provides the arena style design. Our DC series, features Direct Connect technology that allows over 2800 lbs. of downward force to be placed on the goal. Each line, varies in price and the features they tout.

While the game remains the same, spending a little bit more, might provide some added benefits you’ll enjoy for a lifetime.

Be sure to include any accessories into your cost as well. The LED Hoop Light allows players to continue the game well on into the night and additional accessories like the Yard Guard help keep the ball in play and out of the street or out of your neighbor’s yard.

Once you know where your basketball goal will be located, how often it will be used, who will be using it and what your budget is, the next decision you need to make is what type of hoop you want to buy. There are three different types to choose from - each with their own benefits. Let’s have a look…

An in-ground basketball hoop closely replicates the performance of NCAA and NBA hoops, offering the most advanced performance of any residential goal. Most in-ground goals feature tempered glass backboards which offer the most authentic rebound available while the solid steel pole mounted in concrete offers incredible stability for the entire unit.

The installation process for an in-ground basketball hoop requires multiple tools and people to complete. This process generally takes about 4 days including 3 days for concrete installation and curing and 1 day for final assembly of the hoop. However, once the process is complete, the permanency and performance of an in-ground goal can’t be beat.

The in-ground, concrete installation process makes the hoop much more stable, eliminating the risk of tipping over, especially during a dunk. Additionally, in-ground hoops take up less ground space, reducing the trip hazard of a portable’s molded base.

Although you won’t frequently move your in-ground hoop, premium in-ground goals are installed with an anchor system allowing you the flexibility to unbolt and relocate the hoop if you move homes.

Unlike in-ground hoops that feature a glass backboard that simulates pro-level performance, a portable hoop is unable to support the weight of a glass backboard. Instead portable goals utilize a lighter, plastic backboard which sacrifices rebound and playability.

Because they are made with more economic materials, the average lifespan of a portable system is roughly 2 to 5 years. Most portable hoops utilize a blow-molded base as a support structure, which is typically the first piece that fails.

Because portable basketball hoops feature a counter-weighted base filled with either water or sand, they cannot endure heavy or rough play, such as dunking, due to the risk of tipping or falling over.

If you don’t have the room for an in-ground or portable hoop, then a wall-mounted basketball goal can be a great choice. They don’t take up much space and can be easily mounted to a garage, barn or similar outbuilding.

There are some additional factors to consider when buying a basketball hoop including installation, the basketball goal's backboard, height adjustability, overhang, pole finish, size, and shape, basketball rim and net, and accessories.

The type of hoop you decide to buy will determine how involved the installation process is.

The installation process of an in-ground basketball hoop, including the concrete base, is what sets this league of hoops apart from all the others. The process starts with digging a hole that is 16” wide by 48” deep. This hole is then filled with concrete, and the anchor kit system is mounted in the wet concrete and allowed to cure for 72 hours. Then, the hoop can be assembled and mounted to this anchor plate.

All in all, this process generally takes about 4 days to complete, including 3 days for concrete installation and curing and 1 day for final assembly of the goal. Although some consumers can handle this installation on their own, many homeowners opt to have a professional installer manage the process for them.

Portable and wall-mounted hoops can be installed much easier. Many homeowners opt to handle the installation of these types of goals on their own, but professionals can certainly make this process easier.

When it comes to the backboard, bigger is better. A larger backboard offers more shot opportunities and the arena-style performance of 72” backboards found on college and professional-level courts. However, don’t forget: the bigger the backboard, the more expensive the hoop.

When choosing the backboard size that’s right for you, you may also want to consider the size of your driveway. Do you have a one-, two-, or three-car driveway? Some people opt for a smaller backboard so as not to overwhelm the size of their driveway.

A one-car driveway may be better paired with a 54” backboard while a two- to three-car driveway may work better with a 60-72” backboard size. Don’t forget to consider your children’s aspirational needs as well. Is this hoop for recreational use only or is your child hoping to play at a higher level?

NCAA and NBA regulation backboards are 72” W x 42” H. The more your athlete practices with a regulation-size backboard, the better prepared they will be when they hit the court.

Backboards can be constructed of many different materials, which vary in playability and durability. The highest quality backboard is tempered glass, the same material used in gymnasiums at the high school, college, and professional levels. Because of its added strength, tempered glass backboards feature the best rebound performance and are best for competitive play.

If the glass were to break, tempered glass is like a car windshield that holds the shattered glass in place for a crumbling effect. This safety feature removes the worry of injuring a player below if it ever were to break. Many Goalrilla systems offer a Clear View design preventing the board arms from obstructing your view and delivering a more consistent rebound across the entire board. Clear View glass provides a professional arena-style look in your driveway.

Height adjustability is especially important for families that want their goal to grow with their children. This premium feature allows you to adjust the height of your rim from the NCAA and NBA regulation-height of 10’ down to 7.5’ for younger players. ASTM international safety standards specify a minimum hoop height of 6.5’.

Additionally, a hoop lowered to 5’ is a serious safety hazard when backing a car out of your garage, and many owners have backed into their hoop, damaging both their car and their hoop. If lowered too low, the overhang can encroach on your driveway eliminating the amount of space available for play.

Overhang is the distance from the pole to the backboard. Overhang allows for play underneath the basket without hitting the pole and is an important safety feature. Paired with a thick pole pad, overhang protects players from impacting the pole during layups or rebounding off the backboard.

Too much overhang can reduce the amount of court space and cause excessive shaking due to the weight of the backboard being suspended too far from the main pole. Look for approximately 2 feet to 4 feet of overhang for the best balance of safety and performance.

A basketball hoop with an overhang of 5 feet or more can compromise performance because the weight of the glass backboard will increase shake in the system. A basketball hoop with an overhang of 5 feet will actually encroach on the play surface by more than 7 feet once you add the 25 inches of rim that come out from the backboard surface.

Overhang changes as the basketball goal is adjusted. Goalrilla basketball hoops are adjustable from the safety-approved height of 7.5 feet to the NBA and NCAA regulation height of 10 feet. Use the Goalrilla basketball goal overhang chart to find your model and learn the distance in overhang at each height.

Most basketball hoops either have a paint or powder coating finish. Paint may chip or peel, while a powder-coating finish makes them less likely to rust.

Powder coating protects the steel from the harmful elements and the sun’s UV rays to maintain the performance and the professional look of the hoop. This industrial-grade material is superior against rust and keeps your goal looking like a professional arena-style setup.

Basketball poles come in single or multi-piece systems and in square or round poles. A square pole offers the most rigidity or stiffness for your basketball system. Most single piece poles are 4” square, 5” square, or 6” square.

Standard basketball rims are 18 inches in diameter and have rings to connect a net. The rim is one of the most abused aspects of a basketball hoop, so you will want to be sure to purchase one that will hold up to all the shots and impromptu dunk sessions that it will take.

The two most common types of rims for residential applications are static and breakaway. If you plan to dunk, make sure you have a breakaway rim or a pro-style flex rim.

These rims mimic pro-level performance and feature a spring mechanism that flexes under pressure. This feature keeps players safe by “breaking-away” during a dunk instead of remaining in a static position than can harm the player. The spring absorbs the shock of the dunk, which also increases the durability and longevity of the rim.

Static rims are just what their name implies; they remain static. These rims are often used in entry-level models and are an economic option for hoops if you are on a tight budget. Dunking is not recommended on static rims because of the safety implications for the player and the wear on the rim and backboard. During a dunk, the downward force on a static rim is exerted on the backboard, rather than the pole, which can cause the backboard to break or shatter.

Pole and backboard pads can help minimize injuries and protect players from impacting the sharp corners of the backboard and the hard steel of the main pole. An LED Hoop Light can be added to keep the court lit for night time play. An additional safety feature exclusive to Goalrilla is the Yard Guard, a defensive net system that attaches to the main pole to keep balls in the court and prevent them from rolling into a busy street.

Basketball Hoop Buying Guide | PRO TIPS by DICK'S Sporting Goods

Show off your court skills at home by finding the hoop that fits your needs.

Whether you’re helping your future playmaker improve their game or just looking to shoot free-throws in your spare time, a basketball hoop can become a cherished part of your home for the whole family.

But where do you start? Which kind of hoop is best for you and your needs? You’ll need to take into account a variety of factors, from location to backboard material. There are a number of styles and combinations, so let’s take a shot to find the type that best suits you.

Do you already know which type of hoop you need? Shop all basketball hoops at DICK’S and get the game going!

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Before buying your basketball hoop, you’ll want to have an area with plenty of space. A flat, paved spot is usually best, making driveways a popular option. If you decide to place a basketball hoop on the street or sidewalk, just be sure to keep street safety in mind. Some neighborhoods prohibit installation on these public spaces, so check with your borough first.

TYPES OF HOOPS

Once you know where your hoop will go, start looking at the different types that are available. Each has its own benefits, with designs created for a variety of players:

  • In-Ground: In-ground hoops can offer exceptional stability and durability. These hoops are typically fastened to the ground in one of two ways. The traditional method is to place the pole directly into the ground and seal it with cement — a great option if you plan to keep the hoop in a permanent location. However, if you’d like more freedom to move the hoop, there are also anchor-mounted options in which the pole is fastened to a plate that sits atop the ground. This gives you the ability to unfasten the pole and move the hoop to a different spot (or even a different home if you move).

    Shop All In-Ground Hoops

  • Portable: If you’re looking for convenience, you may want to consider a portable hoop. These stand-alone models feature bases with wheels, allowing you to move the hoop quickly when needed. The bases typically range in size from 27–42 gallons, and they can be filled with water, sand or BaseGel for stability. And, because there is no digging or hanging required, portable hoops tend to have the most straight-forward assembly.

    Shop All Portable Hoops

  • Mounted: These models typically feature a backboard and hoop that can be mounted onto a structure, like a garage or exterior wall of your home. These hoops offer superior stability and allow you to make a court with limited room. Many mounted hoopsare set at a fixed height, though there are some that can be adjusted.

    Shop All Mounted Hoops

THE BACKBOARD

The material used in the backboard will affect how the ball bounces off of it as well as the hoop’s overall durability.

  • Tempered Glass: This is the material used at the pro level. Tempered glass offers players a similar bounce and spin they’ll find in gyms.
  • Acrylic: These hoops offer the look of glass at a lower price. They also tend to be lightweight, so they don’t need as much support. More experienced players may notice a different bounce or spin than they’d see at the gym.
  • Polycarbonate: These backboards are highly durable and offer a similar bounce as acrylic. They are designed to withstand the elements.

Also take into account the size of the backboard. These can range from 44″ up to 72″, which is the regulation size at the professional level. The smaller-sized backboards, typically between 44″ and 54″, save on space and are good for a standard two-car driveway. The 60″ backboard is a great midway point, saving space but still offering a larger size for banking shots.

Backboards generally come in two distinct shapes: rectangular and fan-shaped. Rectangle backboards are more common and offer players more space to spin the ball off the glass. The fan-shaped backboards tend to take up less room. Sometimes, it can come down to which look you like better.

OTHER ESSENTIALS

After figuring out which type of hoop and backboard best fits your needs, you will want to take into account what makes up the rest of the hoop:

  • Rim: The standard rim on a basketball hoop is 18″ in diameter. Most modern hoops are equipped with a breakaway, spring-loaded rim. The springs may be exposed in some lower-priced hoops while most higher-priced options have the springs enclosed to help protect it from the elements.
  • Poles: If you are buying a portable or in-ground hoop, take into account the type of pole used. Round poles are typical for portable and smaller in-ground options. Made of multiple pieces, these are not designed for dunking. A square pole holds up better against shaking and vibrations. These components are made of a single piece of steel and can help provide the support for heavier backboards as well as players looking to dunk. Also, if you’re considering an in-ground hoop, make sure to check if the pole is designed to go directly into the ground or if it bolts down on top of a plate. Go with the plate-mounted option if you want freedom to move the hoop.
  • Nets: Hoops commonly come with nets made of nylon. But you can also use a chain link net, which can have a long lifespan but also rust if left out in wet weather. Breakaway net clips can be added. They will disengage if too much pressure is applied.
  • Height adjustment: Depending on the type of hoop you buy, it may come with a height adjustment mechanism. This is a good option for parents who have a younger player not ready to play on a full-size hoop but will grow into it. Most of these hoops can adjust from 7 1/2 ‘ up to 10’, though some come with a larger range.

Now that you know what to look for it’s time to turn your space into your own personal court. Once you have your hoop set up, you’ll be ready to show off your skills to the rest of the neighborhood.

how to choose what they should be

A backboard and a hoop are essential elements for a basketball court. Without them it is impossible to play matches.

Let's see what a backboard and basketball hoop are. And also learn about their features.

    About basketball backboards and hoops

Basketball needs 2 backboards to be placed on the field. One will be for Team A. The other will be for Team B.

After that, rings are installed on the shields. In them, athletes will continue to throw balls.

Shields are made of transparent material. Mostly glass.

In addition to being 100% transparent, it has high strength. Glass does not break when balls hit it.

The shield itself is very thick. Its width is 30 millimeters.

Shields can be made not only from glass, but also from other materials. They don't have to be transparent. In the manufacture of some shields, materials that are not visible can also be used. Opaque products equip outdoor basketball courts. To prevent thieves from stealing the glass.

The shield color is usually white. But it can be black, orange, red and whatever.

Backboards must comply with the regulations of the International Basketball Federation.

    Front panel requirements

The front of the backboard must have a smooth structure. It should have white lines on the sides.

Draw a small square in the area of the shield where the ring is placed. Its height is 45 centimeters. Width - 59centimeters.

The bottom of the square must reach the level where the ring is fixed.

If the shield is transparent, then white stripes are drawn on it. If it has some color, then black lines are most often used. Their width is no more than 5 centimeters.

    How are basketball backboards installed?

On the basketball court, the backboard is placed in the middle. So that the rings on the "bases" of teams A and B stand opposite each other.

    Shields must be upholstered

Each shield is upholstered with a special material:

    1. A special material with a soft surface is applied to the right and bottom of the shield. It should be placed at a distance of 35 centimeters from the bottom of the shield.
    2. The lower part of the shield is also covered with a special material. Its width must be at least 5 centimeters.
    3. The back and front of the shield is covered with special upholstery. Its width should be at least 2 centimeters.

The structure on which the shield is attached must also meet certain requirements.

Shields are mounted on strong metal structures. In order for them to hold securely, the racks must meet a number of requirements.

Metalwork must be bright. They must differ in color from the hall in which basketball competitions are held. In order for players to see the baskets during the game even in poor lighting conditions.

Racks on which boards are hung must be securely fastened to the floor. So that they do not fall during the game. Or didn't move during the match.

We wrote about basketball stands in this article.

    Backboard stands must be padded

Basketball backboard stands must be padded. It is placed behind the product.

The upholstery on the uprights must be tight. The width of the applied material should be from 5 centimeters.

The front part of the basketball backboard posts is reinforced with a special material. He is soft.

Upholstery width must be from 10 mm. It is applied so that athletes do not get injured if they suddenly hit the rack during the match.

    How are basketball backboards attached?

Dimensions of backboards and basketball hoops are regulated by the International Basketball Federation. If the equipment on the site does not meet the requirements, then the competition will not be held on it.

Each basketball backboard has a special attachment. With it, you can fix the product on a metal structure. Or attach the shield to the wall.

To securely mount the shield to a metal post, request a "hard mount" service from a repairer. As part of it, specialists will fix the product so that it does not stagger. And did not fall during the game.

What are the dimensions of the backboard?

Basketball backboard dimensions are 1.08 by 1.05 meters. Product height is 2.9meters.

The International Basketball Federation has established a uniform backboard size for all types of competitions. It should be 72 by 42 inches.

    Basketball hoop features

The basketball hoop is a product made in the shape of a circle. It has a metallic structure.

A special net is hung on basketball hoops. She has no bottom.

The ring is placed on the shield. It should be fixed at a distance of 3.05 meters from the floor. And also 15 centimeters from the bottom of the backboard for basketball.

The diameter of the ring can vary from 45 to 45.7 centimeters. It can have any color. But the most popular is orange.

Place the basketball hoop very carefully. Otherwise, the main load from the shield will be transferred to the ring. And it can fall right during the game.

How to make a basketball hoop with your own hands?

You don't have to buy a ring to play basketball. You can make it yourself.

For this you will need to purchase thick wire. And also a rope.

And after that, do the following steps.

Make a circle out of metal

The first thing to do when creating a ring is to make its round base. After that, it will be possible to proceed to the interlacing of the wire mesh.

You can make a round base from any round metal product. You need to wrap wire around it. After that, the metal ring will be ready.

Next, we move on to creating the mesh. You will need to wind the rope around the ring as follows:

    1. First, the ropes must be fixed in the middle of the ring. Tie them up. The ends of the rope, however, must remain untied.
    2. The untied ends must be tied with the ropes that are located next to them. The left end with the end closest to it. The right end - with the one that, respectively, is located next to it. So you need to do until you completely tie the basket for the ring.

The homemade ring can be used for playing in the yard. However, we do not recommend using this product for competitions. It is not durable and does not comply with the regulations of the International Basketball Federation. It will be prohibited to hold competitions on your site.

We still recommend purchasing basketball rings in stores. This is a safer and more reliable option.

Basketball backboards can also be made by yourself. However, we do not recommend doing this. Because you will spend more money and time on making a shield than if you buy it in a store. In addition, home-made sports equipment of this type will also not comply with the rules of the International Basketball Federation. And the shield will not be used during the competition.

History of basketball hoops and backboards

Basketball (as well as the first backboards, hoops) was invented by James Nesmith. This happened in 1881.

Nesmith was a PE teacher at the Youth Christian Organization. Thanks to him, basketball first appeared in Springfield, Massachusetts (USA).

In 1881, James Nesmith hung improvised basketball hoops in the school. They were very different from the sports equipment of the 21st century. The then ball rings were made from vegetable baskets.

James Nesmith hung these items in the school gym. The rings were placed in the room opposite each other. At the "bases" of teams A and B.

James Nesmith hung the baskets for balls at a height of 3. 05 meters from the floor. Since then, in basketball, they have been placed at the same distance from the surface of the court.

James Nesmith invented the basketball rules. According to them, the athletes had to throw the ball into the ring. And also observe a number of other rules of the game. How to dribble the ball. How to move around the site. How to intercept opponents' serves. And so on.

There were no basketballs in the 19th century. Instead, Nesmith used football.

According to the teacher's rules, there should be 18 players in basketball. 9 in each team. These rules were subsequently adopted by the International Basketball Federation.

In 1892, all of America learned about basketball

The students liked the game so much that in 1892 they began to tell their parents and friends about the new sport. Thanks to "word of mouth" basketball became known in all US states.

As early as February 12, 1892, students from Springfield College organized the first basketball competition. The match ended in a draw. The score was 2:2.

After that, the sport called "basketball" was officially created. The US authorities contacted James Nesmith and asked him to explain the rules of the game. At that time they included only 13 items. However, by the 21st century they have expanded. And now the full list of rules for basketball is about 200 pages long.

    Conclusion

Choosing basketball hoops and backboards is easy. Often, you do not even have to independently check the products for strength and quality. If shields and rings are sold in major sports stores, then they are guaranteed to have certificates confirming their reliability. You can safely purchase such products in hypermarkets.

We do not recommend mounting basketball hoops and backboards on the court by yourself. To do this, it is better to hire workers who will install the equipment in accordance with the rules of this sport. And they will make sure that the shield and the ring do not stagger, do not fall during matches.

    Choosing basketball hoops and backboards

After the appearance of the game like basketball, the question of accessories for it seriously arose. To play basketball, it is necessary to have not only a ball and self-confidence, but also a platform specially equipped for this. There should be shields to which rings with a basket are attached. Such equipment of the court is the basis for playing basketball.

Basketball backboard equipped with a basketball hoop can now be found not only on the sports field or sports hall. These accessories are found in summer cottages and in ordinary city apartments. And if you also decide buy basketball hoop and backboard, should be aware of the selection options.

    What to look for?

If we talk about a shield, then the main requirements for it are strength and dimensions. Basketball backboard , which will be located on the street, should not be afraid of changes in temperature and humidity. The main requirement is that it must correspond to the strength of a wooden shield having a thickness of 30 mm.

Boards are divided into fixed boards, which can be attached to a pole or wall, and boards, which require posts to be positioned. Racks for a sports hall or playground must be stationary, and, for their location on the street, they must necessarily have an anti-corrosion coating.

The shield must have a edging that gives it extra strength; it is made of a lightweight and ultra-strong material. It can be acrylic, organic glass or plywood. It doesn't matter if the shield is transparent or colored.

Another requirement is the correct marking of the surface. It must be applied with black paint on opaque shields, or with white paint on the transparent material of the shield. The rectangle next to the ring should measure 45 x 49 cm, and the backboard should be located at such a height that there are 305 centimeters from the playing surface to the ring.

As a rule, the dimensions of the backboard are selected based on the age group of the players and their average height. The classic dimensions of the shield are considered to be 180 x 105 centimeters.

    Features of basketball stands

If the purchase is made for children, then you should pay attention to basketball stands that have a sliding design, in which you can change the height of the backboard above the surface of the court. Children's basketball backboards with racks are lightweight, quickly assembled and dismantled.

Requirements for rings are strength and size. A real playing ring must have an inner diameter of 45 cm, must be made of strong steel with a diameter of at least 16 mm. At the bottom of the ring there should be fasteners for the net. It is desirable that the ring has a shock-absorbing effect. The grid is rarely present in the shield kit, and it is sold separately, and for an amateur.

How to choose a basketball hoop Tomsk

Basketball is one of the most popular and spectacular sports. One of the main attributes of which are basketball hoop and ball. All inventory for this game was standardized back in 1893. According to the norms, rings began to be made of metal, equipped with a grid. They were securely attached to a special shield at a certain height. To date, there are also rules and standards that clearly spell out all the requirements for equipping a basketball court.

    Basketball hoop: types and characteristics

First of all, you need to consider that there are amateur and professional basketball hoops. The latter are characterized by the presence of a shock-absorbing system, which, thanks to the spring, prevents the fastening of the basket to the shield from deformation. In turn, along with shock-absorbing rings, there are fixed ones that have a rigid mount, since the ring is mounted directly on the shield. In addition, there is also an anti-vandal ring, which has a reinforced frame and additional stiffeners. As a rule, it is used on street basketball courts. The size of the ring in diameter can vary from 45 cm to 45.7 cm. The color is orange.

Basketball rings. Features and benefits of depreciation varieties

Sports shops that sell basketball court equipment offer several types of rings.

    1. Standard mesh designs. These are the cheapest models, suitable for matches and training in most places, from schoolyards to sports complexes.
    2. Anti-vandal rings. These basketball baskets are suitable for outdoor use. The rim allows sports equipment to serve basketball fans longer.
    3. Cushioning rings. The most expensive option, suitable for competitions and training even at a professional level.

Basketball is deservedly considered one of the most spectacular sports. Often, players, knowing how closely the audience is following their movements, hang on the rings in order to impress and give positive emotions to the fans after the ball is successfully sent to the basket. The main difference between cushioning rings is a spring mechanism that always returns the basket to its original position. Thus, no matter how much the athlete hangs on the ring, it will always return to the proper (3.05 m) height.

Basketball hoops with shock absorbers also soften powerful ball hits, prolonging the life of the basket, and do not allow the structure to break away from the backboard under heavy load. All of these advantages have the model art. 091310.

Basketball equipment was standardized in 1893. In accordance with accepted standards, rings are made of metal and equipped with a 40 cm long mesh. Baskets are attached to shields located 120 cm from the edge of the site. The diameter of the ring varies between 45–45.7 cm. The traditional color is orange.

What to look for when choosing a basketball hoop with shock absorber?

When choosing a basketball hoop, it is important to pay attention to the nuances. If you need equipment for amateur sports, it is better to prefer cheaper models. For professional games and training, designs with shock absorbers are optimal.

What factors to consider when looking for equipment?

    1. Dimensions. They must be standard. Deviation from the rules will cause the ball to get stuck in the basket, bounce off the net and play inefficiently.
    2. Quality. It is also governed by standards. Baskets that do not comply with the regulations are only suitable for children's fun, fun sports relay races, etc.
    3. Damping mechanism. The spring-type design should be sufficiently tight. It is unacceptable that it allows the ring to deviate by more than 30 °. It would be nice if there was a stiffness control system.
    4. Protective coating. Metal rings for basketball need additional protection against corrosion, sunlight, and mechanical damage. This function is performed by powder paint or other similar compositions.

Standard basketball hoop height and size But this is not necessary if you just want to throw the ball into the basket. Now it is possible to purchase ready-made equipment even for placement in an apartment or office.

The size of the basketball hoop, although it has standard values, is only for official competitions. In everyday life, everyone can choose the size of the basket and the ball at will.

    The history of basketball

Experts believe that this is perhaps the only game about which it is known for certain who invented it and when. It happened in 1891 in Springfield, USA. Dr. D. Naismith, a teacher at the Christian Youth Association's Learning Center, decided to come up with an outdoor indoor team ball game to replace American football. According to another version, he wanted to revive gymnastics in this way.

One way or another, they were offered rules according to which the players of the two teams had to throw the ball into baskets suspended at a height. Each team had its own zone and basket. In the hall, D. Naismith simply hung them on the balconies. The players had to hit the opponent's basket with the ball and protect their own from their hits. Whoever hits the target more times in the allotted time wins. There were rules for dribbling, penalties for violating the rules were stipulated. In those days, the size of the basketball hoop was not strictly regulated. Fruit baskets were used for these purposes. And the balls were then far from ideal shape. In order not to get them every time, they took out the bottom of the baskets.

    Development of the game

Trial competitions showed that the rules needed to be changed. The spectators on the balconies, where the baskets hung, prevented the ball from getting inside. So the shields were born. Initially, they served as protection from the fans, but already the first games showed that it was even more interesting that way. The ball could hit the ring after a successful rebound from the shield. This added spice to the game and made it possible for teams to change tactics.

The size and height of the basketball hoop did not change significantly over time. At 1893 year wicker baskets for fruit ceased to be used in tournaments. To replace them, rings made of a metal rod were invented. A net was attached to it so that there would be no disputes about a successful hit. With it, it was better to see when the ball hit the target. In 1894, unified rules for basketball were proposed. The game was liked and quickly spread to Japan and China, South America and Europe. Basketball first appeared in Russia in 1906. In the twenties of the last century, it began to be introduced as a discipline in military and sports schools.

    Professionals and amateurs

For an athlete who has linked his career with the game, it matters what size basketball hoop is used in training. The skills of determining the position for the throw, its strength, trajectory have been practiced for years. In the US, where basketball quickly moved from amateur to professional, good players became highly valued. The cost of individual contracts reached one dollar per minute of play. At that time, it was very good earnings. They encouraged the players to train hard to show good ball control on the court and high performance in shots on the basket.

The difference in the level of professional basketball players in the US and other countries where the game is not so popular was felt. For a long time, the Olympic Committee banned players from the NBA from participating in their tournaments. And when this restriction was lifted, the US team confidently defeated the best team from Croatia at that time. However, the professionals were still put to shame, because they were so sure of their advantage that they promised to win by 50 points. That final match of the Olympic Games ended with a score of 117:85. The victory of the professionals was obvious, but the "amateurs" gave a serious rebuff and managed to lose only 32 points.

    Basketball hoop: dimensions, diameter

Back in 1893, when thoughtful rules of the game were proposed, it was decided to standardize the inventory according to uniform standards. Then the rings began to be made of metal, equipped with a mesh, securely and securely fastened to the shield and supporting structures at a certain height from the site. What are these standards?

Today, the playground should have dimensions of 28×15 m. The height of the enclosed space (ceiling) is at least 7 meters. The shield (bottom edge) is attached at a height of 290 cm from the floor. It has dimensions of 180x105 cm. The basket (a metal ring with a mesh) is attached to the shield at a height of 305 cm (respectively, 15 cm above the lower edge of the shield). The diameter of the ring should be within 45-45.7 cm. For its manufacture, a steel bar 16-20 mm in diameter is used.

The game ball varies in circumference and weight and is respectively: for men - 74.9-78 cm, 567-650 g, and for women - 72.4-73.7 cm, 510-567 g. FIBA controls and approves playground equipment and inventory. Balls for official competitions are made of leather. Air pressure should ensure that the ball bounces to a height of 1.2-1.4 m after it falls from a height of 1.8 m.

    Net

Any sports equipment should be injury-proof. The verified size of the basketball hoop also provides for the use of a standard size net with it and an acceptable configuration. It should be fastened in such a way as to minimize the possibility of pinching fingers during the game.

Net length standard is 40-45 cm. 12 loops are available for attaching to the metal bar of the basket. For the manufacture of the mesh, a white cord of a certain stiffness is used. The weave configuration does not allow its edges to roll over during ring play or entanglement. The ball cannot get stuck and at the same time must pass with some delay, making it possible to capture the moment it hit the basket.

    Design Features

It is not enough to use only a standard size basketball hoop for training. The height of its placement above the ground is no less important. The dimensions of the shield and the applied boundary lines (5 cm - width) marking the quadrangle (45 cm by 59 cm) behind the basket are also important. The material for the shields is often polycarbonate or tempered glass. Its surface should be smooth and even.

The shield is fixed rigidly to the supporting base, with the plane perpendicular to the floor. The structure must not move during the game during throws and contacts. The lower edge and ends of the shield plane to a height of 35 cm, as well as all supporting structures, are upholstered with soft material, which excludes injury. In general-purpose sports halls, mobile racks with a basket are now increasingly used. They can be quickly installed and dismantled if necessary. In basketball halls, backboards are attached to the ceiling or walls. They can also be hung on special stretch marks.

The basket can be attached rigidly or with a shock absorber. In this case, the plane of the ring should not bend more than 30 degrees and immediately return to its original position. Regardless of the method of fastening, the design must absorb 35-50% of the load of the player's weight on contact.

    Do-it-yourself basketball hoop: dimensions

Playgrounds for training athletes and competitions are equipped by the relevant organizations according to existing standards. To be able to practice at home, you can purchase a separate board with a basket and hang it in a suitable place or install a ready-made and fully equipped rack. But you can do everything yourself.

If there are plans to engage in this sport in the future, then when making the backboard, it is desirable to maintain the standard size of a basketball hoop. It will be problematic to bend and weld a steel bar with a diameter of 16 mm without suitable equipment and locksmith skills. But you can adapt an old aluminum hoop for rotation for these purposes. It is cut, bent to the desired diameter and secured with an outer insert.

The shield can be cut from a piece of chipboard, fiberboard of a suitable size or knocked down from boards. It is best to attach the basket to it on the bracket. It can be picked up at a hardware store. It is worth thinking about additional spacers on the sides of the ring, since fixing at one point is not enough and upon contact with the ball, the basket will inevitably sag more and more.

You can make a net using 24 pieces of rope. Their length is chosen 2-2.5 times longer than the diameter of the ring. The edges are knitted to the hoop through equal segments. Then the ropes are tied in pairs in the middle. In the next step, the process is repeated with free edges. And so again. The result is a tapered mesh. The inventory, of course, will be far from standards and perfection, but it should be enough for training at home with the ball.

dimensions and height of the basketball hoop

A basketball backboard and a hoop are essential components of a basketball court. The world has adopted standards regarding these elements: they were established by the International Basketball Federation.

Basketball backboard is a rectangular or square panel on which the hoop is fixed. The shield is equipped with a mount for mounting on a pole or hanging on the wall: rigid mounting is required so that the product does not wobble or move. The size of the product is 1.8x1.05 meters, while the distance from its edge to the floor should be 2.9meters. The NBA has set the following standards: the size of the backboard is 72 x 42 inches. There should be two shields, they are installed at opposite ends of the field, the material is durable and resistant to shock (for example, tempered glass, acrylic, wood). The surface is marked with lines, it must be smooth. Non-stationary basketball backboard models with a net use the same mounting elements as the brackets for hanging punching bags. This allows you to withstand a large weight of the product and securely fix it. Also a popular product is considered to be a goal with a basketball backboard, which you can buy on our website.

What should a basketball hoop look like? This element should be installed at a distance of 3.05 meters from the floor and 0.15 meters from the bottom edge of the shield. The inner diameter can vary from 45 to 45.7 centimeters. The basketball hoop is painted in a bright color, most often orange. The load on the basket should not be transferred to the shield, so special attention must be paid to the installation of the product.

    history and modernity - Articles

Basketball is a game about which you can tell a story with exact numbers and names. In 1891 in America, in Springfield, Dr. D. Naismith came up with the idea to come up with an outdoor team game. What for?

    Fig. 1. Dr. D. Naismith

    Version 1

A Christian Youth Association training center teacher needed a substitute for American football so that they could play indoors in the winter.

    Version 2

Naismith wanted to diversify his gymnastics.

    The first rules in basketball

In the 19th century, the rules of the game were similar to those of today. Participants of two teams had to throw the ball into baskets located at a height. Each team had its own zone and its own basket. The winner is the one with the most hits in a certain time.

Certain rules for dribbling have been developed. There were fines for violations. The basketball hoop in those days did not have strict size regulations. Traditional fruit containers were used. Later, the bottom disappeared in them for a simple reason: the players were too lazy to get the abandoned balls every time. The balls also did not have an ideal shape.

Photo 1. The first basketball baskets

Baskets were hung on balconies. The people who were sitting there prevented the balls from flying in the right direction, so they had to build shields. They became a kind of protection from the fans. Then the players noticed that the ring can be hit when the ball bounces off the backboard, it was entertaining.

    Basketball hoop dimensions

The size and height of the basketball hoop have not changed much over time. Fruit baskets are no longer used in 1893 years old Replaced with metal rings. To avoid disputes over a successful hit, a net was attached to the ring. With her, it became more noticeable whether the ball was in the basket or not. In 1894, uniform basketball rules appeared.

The game quickly spread around the world, but in the US it has gained particular popularity. Professional basketball players began to be valued very highly, the cost of some contracts amounted to several dollars just for a minute of the athlete being on the court. The earnings were huge. This gave the players the opportunity to train even more in order to show the highest skill in matches.

For a professional player, the dimensions of the basketball hoop and the height at which it is fixed are important. Constant values allow you to better develop skills in determining the position, strength and trajectory of throws. It was decided to standardize the rules and equipment in 1893. It was then that the rings became only metal and with a grid, and the optimal height was determined.

    Photo 2. Modern basketball baskets

Today the parameters are as follows:

    • platform 28 x 15 m;
    • ceiling height not less than 7 meters;
    • lower edge of the shield at a height of 290 cm from the floor;
    • shield dimensions 180 x 105 cm;
    • basket at a height of 305 cm, i.e. 15 cm above the lower edge of the shield;
    • ring diameter 45–45.7 cm;
    • diameter steel bar for basketball hoop 16–20 mm;
    • mesh 450 mm in diameter, with a mesh of 50 mm.

The ball must also have strictly defined dimensions. However, for men's and women's teams they are different. Balls for basketball players are 74.9-78 cm in diameter and weigh 567-650 g, for basketball players, respectively - 72.4-73.7 cm, 510-567 g.

How to choose a basketball - a complete guide to choosing basketballs If you have a desire or need to purchase a basketball, then you will be interested to know: how do they differ and which one is right for you? Basketballs are made from different materials and different sizes. There is also a risk of buying low-quality goods, because there are not so many really good ball manufacturers. In this article, you will learn which basketballs are used under various game conditions. And you will be able to understand which one is right for you.

    Types of basketballs

    INDOOR basketball

The first type of ball is for indoor or INDOOR. Such balls are made of leather or synthetic materials. The production of leather balls is more expensive. Therefore, their cost is higher than that of balls made of synthetic materials. In addition, modern synthetic materials are more durable. The INDOOR ball is not recommended for outdoor play. A hard and dirty outdoor surface will quickly make the ball unusable. Balls for the hall are the most comfortable and pleasant for hands. Therefore, it makes sense to buy a more expensive ball.

    OUTDOOR basketball

The next type of ball is for playing outdoors or OUTDOOR. They are used for outdoor play and are less prone to wear on hard surfaces. Made from synthetic materials.

Such balls are rarely made of leather, because they quickly lose their properties and appearance on outdoor surfaces. A leather basketball on the street is a waste of money.

    INDOOR/OUTDOOR basketball

The third type of balls is universal ("INDOOR/OUTDOOR"). They are suitable for playing in any conditions. Often made of rubber, making them more resistant to rough street surfaces. Rubber is the cheapest material, so the price of such balls is low. True, they are less pleasant to play than synthetic or leather ones.

How to choose the size of a basketball

    Basketballs come in four sizes:

    • size 7 is the largest. This size is used in men's competitions;
    • size 6 - this is how women play, as well as children in adolescence;
    • size 5 - suitable for players under 12;
    • size 3 is more of a souvenir than a game ball. But it is suitable for children under 7 years old.

Special considerations when choosing a basketball

The best known manufacturers of basketballs are Spalding and Molten. They are used by professional leagues and teams.

The basketball must be well inflated to give sufficient bounce. If you throw the ball to the floor with an outstretched arm at shoulder level, then it should bounce to the waist. You can also just press it with your thumb. The deflection should be about 3-5 millimeters. A poorly inflated ball will be uncomfortable to play, and a pumped one will wear out faster.

A good ball should be round. If it is elongated or has a bulge or "hernia", then such a ball is not suitable for the game. Tap the ball. It should bounce up. If it is pulled to the side, then the ball is not round.

Any ball does not like dust and moisture. Therefore, try to play on a dry surface, and after playing, clean it from dust and wipe it.

General recommendations for choosing a basketball

Now you can choose the ball yourself, based on your requirements and wishes. For example, for outdoor play with teens and women, a size 6 OUTDOOR basketball is best.

If you want to buy a quality basketball, it is best to buy a ball from modern synthetic materials from a well-known manufacturer. If you are not ready for an expensive purchase, then take a rubber basketball for all surfaces. Get serious about choosing a basketball, and then it will become your true friend in the game.

What to look for when choosing a basketball stand?

One of the main advantages of playing basketball is accessibility. All that is required is a ball, a rack with a ring and a flat area. Basketball stand can be installed anywhere, for example, in your yard or country house. But in order for it to last longer, when choosing, you need to pay attention to several important parameters:

    • Rack type . Depending on the method of installation, they are divided into stationary and mobile. Stationary racks are mainly equipped with professional platforms. This is a rather massive steel L-shaped structure that will be concreted into the ground outside the site at a safe distance, and the shield will hang above the site and protrude 1. 2m beyond the marking line. For amateur games, mobile or folding stands are the best option - they are easy to assemble and move. This rack features a compact design, light weight, speed and convenience when preparing the court for the game.
    • Manufacturer . You should not chase the cheapness of Chinese inventory, its quality in most cases leaves much to be desired. The best balance of quality and price can be considered such world famous brands as AND1 or DFC . This is the best option for your home or garden! And when used in school gyms, you can be sure of the safety and stability of these racks. As for the professional segment, the cost of equipment from brands such as SCHELDE SPORTS , although justified, it is quite high. Therefore, it is worth taking a closer look at domestic manufacturers offering more affordable similar professional basketball stands .
    • Material . The safety of the players depends on how strong the structure will be. Most often, stationary posts are made of steel, and basketball backboards are made of tempered glass, plastic, acrylic, aluminum and plywood. Mass racks, as a rule, are made partially collapsible and lightweight. But in professional racks, the strength and reliability of the structure are valued, the massiveness and absence of vibrations of the shield when the ball hits come out on top. If the inventory will be used outdoors, the metal parts must be painted or protected with an anti-corrosion coating.
    • Height adjustable . This feature will come in handy if not only adults but also children will play. Although it must be understood that there is a regulation for competitions and training, according to which the height of the ring from the surface of the playing field is the same and is 3.05m.
