How to get separation in basketball

Basketball Dribble Moves To Create Separation

There’s a killer lil’ move I’ve had in my arsenal for a while now. Take the time today to really drill and execute this one guys, it’s extremely helpful if you’re looking for more buckets.

I used it all the time playing professional ball overseas in Germany— I thought I would make a video about the move, why it works, and what drills you can use to incorporate it into your game.

If you’re looking for an effective, high-light reel addition to your existing basketball dribble moves, you’ve come to the right place.

Check This Separation Move Out:

This move is essentially a “Through the Legs ‘Stop on a Dime'” move. If you guys want to name this something, make sure to comment and share! I’m sure the move has been done before, but I don’t think it’s as widely known as it should be, or that anyone’s labeled it yet. Together, maybe we can advance basketball knowledge, you know? : P

Anyways, it’s almost like a jump stop, but unlike a normal jump stop, it leads directly into a shot or a counter if the defense bites on the shot.

It’s simple, it’s a little difficult to master, and it’s ridiculously effective.

The beauty of this move is that you can go into it at full speed.

Often times, I see guards trying to execute a jump shot from full speed. But they haven’t stopped all the way. They’re off balanced. I see their bodies drift in the air waaay too much to make a reliable and consistent shot. Some off-balance shooting is manageable, but to do so from full speed requires practice.

This move solves that consistency problem.

Go from a wide stance, with the jump-stop through the legs to regain balance. After, you’re into your normal, on-balance, shot stance. Easy money. $$$

That being said, I’m going into drills below; Make sure to actually practice this move to make it consistent. There’s no point in learning a new move that increases consistency if you don’t actually practice that consistency. Drills and alternate drills below guys!

After the execution of the jump-stop through the legs portion of the move, there are also counters to the move to protect it. No defender should be able to read you. Having counters ensures the defense stays honest and you get more buckets.

Here Are The Move’s Primary Options

  • Normal finish: Into a jump-shot. Stay on balanced for the easy shot.
  • Counter 1: Shot fake into a "Blow by" move to cross the defender who reached for the normal jump-shot.
  • Counter 2: Step back to gain even MORE space for the jump-shot.

The Drill for This Move

The cool thing about this move is you can practice and execute it many different ways. It’s hard to tell you exactly how to drill it because there are numerous variations.

You can practice this move stationaryinto a shot, and from full speed. Perhaps drill the move about 20 times with every version or alternate of the move you choose.

Drill Tip

When you rep this move, make sure not to bobble the ball after the between the legs portion. It's crucial. Get that ball into your shot-line. You're trying to work out the inconsistencies while you drill and this will be the most difficult part of the repetitions.

If you’re looking for alternate ways to drill this move, you can also do the following variations:

Drill Variations

  • 1

    Variation: Alternate/Scissors

Repeat the through the legs portion of the move twice in a row. Really quicken those fast twitch muscles. Again, make sure not to bobble the ball on it's way to your shot line. You need a consistent shot after this move or it's worthless.

  • 2

    Variation: 3-peat

This is almost the same as scissors but it's 3 in a row. You can also do this 4 or 5 times. Too many though and you won't be used to catching the ball in your shot line.

  • 3

    Variation: Shot Line Catches

Perhaps you really want to learn not to bobble the ball. Maybe you've got the footwork and ball handling down, but the shooting aspect doesn't feel "all day." Rep the normal through the legs portion of the move, catch the ball in your shot line, and then repeat that exact motion 3 or 4 more times until you finally shoot the ball. Yes, it's double dribble. It's about the catching aspect for this alternate. Find more information about this drill in the video.

And if you’re looking for 3 MORE moves, make sure to check out the video below: 3 Shifty Moves to Create Space and Break Ankles.

Just throw me a social media shout-out, it takes

5 seconds, and it’s all yours. Thanks for the support guys, it means quite a bit to me.

However, these documents can become very complex and often require the legal assistance of a family law lawyer. No couple decides to marry with the intention of divorcing later. Unfortunately, some relationships don`t work in the long run. This means that there is a time when separation and divorce decisions need to be discussed. If both spouses are not entirely certain that divorce is the next step, a separation without a break in body might be the best choice. This is a less serious and non-permanent solution that should be considered before divorce. There are benefits if you opt for a legal separation instead of a divorce to consider. Separation agreements can protect both spouses and help resolve written issues such as debt, property, custody, visitation, child maintenance, child support, and other important issues. In addition, a separation without dissolution of the body allows the spouse to remain married in order to maintain insurance coverage in the event of a spouse`s disability or death. Even if your appointment is not legally held against you in the custody decision, the children may still be angry. It`s quite difficult for children to understand that a parent is back after a divorce.

If you`re still married, it may be even more difficult for her. To decide if a separation without body rupture is the right option, it is important to know exactly what other possibilities you have. The legal separation lawyers at Martin Heller Potempa & Sheppard PLLC can guide you through the process and help you work out the specifics of your separation agreement. If you want a divorce, our lawyers can advise you on the best strategy. To apply for legal separation, at least one of the spouses must be legally resident in Tennessee or have resided in the state for at least six months. Number three. Suppose you and your spouse get a decree on legal separation. At the end of 2 years, each of you can "turn" the separation into a divorce without the consent of the other. You have already borne the costs of body breakage. Two years later, you could be tried again for a divorce verdict. Matrimonial property that was not divided at the time of legal separation must be distributed upon divorce.

If the divorce follows separation without dissolution of the body, and it often does, the total cost may exceed what the divorce alone would have cost. While there aren`t many differences in Tennessee between separation without a break and divorce, it`s important to know that while you may want to continue in life, meeting and moving in with a new partner can be a problem for you later. A separation agreement protects both parties. This agreement defines in writing the settlement of matrimonial matters such as property, debt, financial matters, custody, visitation and maintenance issues. Separation agreements are legally binding and are used to settle matrimonial matters. The main difference between a separation without legal breakdown and a divorce lies in the fact that an absolute divorce dissolves the bonds of marriage, but not the legal separation. In Tennessee, a separation without dissolution of body is recognized when a judge signs an order legally "separating" the parties It is much the same as a divorce, except that the spouses cannot remarry until they formally divorce. The reasons for a body breakup in Tennessee are the same for divorce. The judicial system may rule on any question of legal separation, with the exception of the dissolution of the marriage. Legal separation regulations may include financial assistance, child custody and asset distribution. A separation agreement is a legally bound contract to which every spouse must consent and sign....

Fast break attack in basketball

Hello, dear visitors of the website basketball-training.org.ua ! This article begins a series of materials that tells about organizing a fast break in basketball (which I used to call a fast break).

In general, the fast break should be one of the most important offensive options on any basketball team. Of course, there are exceptions to any rule, and it would be foolish to force a veteran team to run into fast breaks after every successful rebound. However, surprise your opponent with a sudden increase in pace and score easy points - why not!

Basketball fast break

Fast break situations

Fast break usually occurs after:

  • Losses by opponents . The loss of the ball leads to the fact that the opponent will have to rebuild from tactical offensive schemes to defensive schemes. Often, such a rebuilding becomes impossible, or it takes too much time for which a successful attack can be carried out.
  • Defense rebounds. If, immediately after picking up the ball, you give a pass to a fast partner (as a rule, they should open to the left and right of the player who picked up the ball), then your team will have the opportunity to disperse a fast attack.
  • Blocking the opponents' throw (block shot). Do you know what a really cool blockshot is? Not the one after which the ball flies into the stands, and the audience jumps up from their seats. After a good block shot, the ball is either in the hands of the blocker or in the hands of his partner. It was these block shots that the legendary Celtics center, Bill Russell, was famous for.
  • After a successful throw by the opponents. While the opponents are celebrating the successful completion of the attack, you have literally a couple of seconds to catch them off guard with a quick attack. Take advantage of these moments.

8 reasons why you need to regularly run into a fast break.

1. A fast break is the best way to create an easy scoring opportunity.

2. The regular use of fast breaks will allow your team to control the pace of the game . Often in the game against more skilled, but tired opponents, the imposition of a high pace of play leads to a number of errors in opponents. Thus, you can get an advantage that will allow you to bring the match to its logical conclusion.

3. The fast break is the most effective way to break pressure. Moreover, this applies to such types as zone pressing, full court pressure and half-court pressure.

4. Fast break is very effective against zone defense. You need to deliver the ball to the opponents' basket as quickly as possible before they have time to build a zone.

5. Regular fast breaks (you always want to write “fast breaks”) create some kind of constant pressure on opponents, affecting the pace of their attack and forcing the coach to take timeouts to rebuild defensive schemes. By speeding up the pace, you can cause the opposing players to play slower (deliberately slowing down the pace of the game). By playing slower, they risk making unprepared rolls due to the attack time limit ( 24 second rule that saved the NBA).

6. The constant expectation of a fast break makes the “big” opposing teams get out of the rhythm: they may not be as aggressive on the rebound, worrying about protecting their ring. By the way, in the opposite case (great desire to take the rebound at any cost to prevent a quick break), the opponent's centers will not only get tired quickly, but also expose the rear for the fast players of your team.

7. Another excellent psychological factor in the use of fast breaks is the high number of fouls on the part of defenders. Agree: it is much more difficult to play cleanly against an opponent who has gained good speed than against an opponent who is just starting to accelerate. A quick collection of fouls by key players on the opposing team can play a key role in a match. A living example - Marc Gasol in the finals of the Olympic Games "caught" 4 personal remarks in a few minutes - and spent almost the entire game on the bench.

8. A fast break can turn every player into a top scorer. For example, if your percentage from the middle distance is 50%, then in fast breaks it can rise to 90%. And as you know, after a couple of quickly scored points, a player can start flying everything, even the most incredible balls. So to say "on fire".

So now that we've identified the benefits of fast breaks, let's talk about how to organize and complete them. But it will be already separate item , because there are more than a few dozen schemes alone.

Travel, stops and turns | Basic Techniques

Basketball technique, except for ball possession (catching, passing, dribbling and throwing into the ring), includes the player's movement on the court. A basketball player must be able to run at different paces, stop quickly, change direction, make unexpected turns, good jumps and a whole range of distracting movements that disorientate the opponent and help the player's freedom of action on the field.

The movements of a basketball player must be varied, based on jerks in various directions. A basketball player during the game should always be at the start before the maximum exertion of forces, all the time he should be ready either for a rapid breakthrough or for an abrupt stop.

Especially important is the ability to move with and without the ball at a variable pace. It is not difficult for a defender to "hold" an attacker who is constantly moving at the same pace and in the same direction. Having adapted to this pace, he easily copes with this task. Another thing is if the attacking player often and abruptly changes the pace and direction of the run. A sudden stop after a dash and a new dash in the other direction completely disorients the defender and allows the attacker to break free of his control even for a moment. This time is enough to receive the ball and shoot the basket.

Skillful movement of the player on the field helps him to increase his maneuverability in difficult conditions of the game, i.e. the ability to act actively. The player's maneuverability depends on his ability to maintain the balance of his body in any position. Balance depends on the location of the body weight, which should be distributed on both legs as much as possible at all times. Loss of balance most often occurs if the player acts on straight legs. Legs bent at the knees allow the player to always maintain balance and move equally well in any direction, stop abruptly and change direction.

If a basketball player has lost his balance, then, if necessary, to change the direction of movement, he must first expend time and energy to restore balance and only then change direction. Unskillful movement requires an extra expenditure of energy, time and causes many errors.

A player of the attacking team, using his movement skills (good start, sudden stop), seeks to break away from the defender and go to an empty place to receive the ball or go with the ball to the backboard.

Running . The player's run on the court must be very fast and varied. A basketball player must be able to run forward, backward, sideways, etc. Due to the small size of the court, he rarely has to run more than 12–15 m, more often 5–7 m. It is known that in basketball it is quite enough to break away from the opponent by 60-90 cm to receive the ball or even throw it into the basket. This requires a sharp start and speed of the first steps. For these one or two steps you can always get an advantage of 30-40 cm; this is enough to be inaccessible to the enemy. The effectiveness of a jump start is increased by its unexpectedness.

The beginning of the movement depends only on the attacking player, and this gives him a great opportunity to take the initiative. The start can be taken from a place and on the move - a change in pace with a jerk. A sharp decrease in pace or a sudden stop can also help to break away (behind) from the opponent. A sharp start, a fast run and a different pace of running (acceleration and deceleration) are necessary for every basketball player.

Player stop . A basketball player in a game, moving along the court with or without the ball, if necessary, must be able to stop abruptly at any speed without making a run so as not to lose the ball. The art of a good stop can be mastered only through long and hard work. The faster the movement, the harder it is to stop. The stop mainly depends on the work of the legs (their strength and ability to place the soles of the feet correctly) and the work of the torso.

When moving slowly, a stop can be made with a large step of one (either) foot forward to stop.

Harder to stop when running fast or very fast. To stop while running fast, the player takes one longer step and puts the main emphasis on the foot that first touches the ground after this step. The second leg, landing later, consolidates the stop and, together with the back tilt of the body, eliminates the danger of further movement by inertia (jogging or falling).

When running very fast, the stop must be carried out by jumping with simultaneous landing on both half-bent legs and turning the body by 90 °. The player, in addition to turning, must deflect the body in the direction opposite to the movement. This is necessary to overcome the inertia of the body obtained during fast running. After the jump, the legs should be shoulder-width apart and land simultaneously on full feet with the desire to switch to gliding. Stopping after any pace of progress, the basketball player must strive to maintain the balance of the body on both legs at all times.

Jumping . The game uses a wide variety of jumps. With the help of a jump, you can intercept a high-flying ball sent by a partner or opponent, take possession of the ball after rebounding from the shield in the fight against the enemy. The jump allows the player to free himself from the opponent in order to shoot the basket or pass the ball to a partner. The ability to jump high gives an advantage in the fight against the enemy during the initial rally of the ball or during a controversial throw.

Jumps can be done with one or two feet, with or without hands. Jumps are made from a place and from a run. All types of jumps are equally important and are used equally often in the game. The small size of the court, the large crowding of players in small areas often require it from a basketball player using running jumps to take off only up without moving forward. The inability to jump only up can cause collisions and, consequently, personal errors. Stubborn struggle for the ball sometimes requires athletes to perform several jumps in a row from a place.

The complexity and versatility of the use of jumping in the game require intensive work on increasing jumping ability.

Turns . In basketball, a player can only take one or two steps with the ball, after which he must pass the ball to a partner, throw it into the basket or dribble. Opponent resistance often deprives the player of this opportunity. In this case, in order to free himself from the opponent, protect the ball or throw it into the basket, the attacker uses a turn. The turn is made as follows: the basketball player leans on one leg, on which the weight of the body is located, and, without moving it from its place, with the other foot, with a push, makes a turn in any direction.

Turns can be performed to the right or left depending on the movement of the pushing leg (fig. 1 and 2).

Fig. 1. Right turn

2. Turn to the left side

The main purpose of the turn is to get rid of the enemy and get away from him as far as possible.
