How to look good while playing basketball

What to Wear on the Basketball Court This Summer

What to Wear on the Basketball Court

With the NBA playoffs in full swing, we've been spending a lot more time in our local cage putting up — admittedly disappointing — shots. Even during lockdown, Netflix’s The Last Dance managed to inspire many of us to find an empty court, practice our crossover, and start working on our fadeaway three-point shot. Watching Michael Jordan’s game-winning mentality was enough to make even the most rookie of basketball players eager to try and imitate it. After five minutes of throwing airballs, though, we realized that playing basketball isn’t as easy as the GOAT makes it look. But he inspired us on another front, too: clothing.

Few sports are as closely connected with modern culture as basketball. From music to fashion, the NBA — and basketball in general — has become a leading style hotspot. That makes it doubly important to look good while you hoop, because if you’re going to trash talk then you need to back it up and your 10-year-old running shorts aren’t going to work.

Look to Reebok, adidas, and more for retro perfection or more modern offerings from PUMA to upgrade your on-court clout.

Selecting the right gear for your basketball game

Team Singapore Basketball Athlete Jabez Su Ming Rong (Photo credit: SportSG)

One of the best things about playing basketball is that you don’t have to invest in hefty equipment. Besides a basketball, the other basketball gear you require to play the game is basic and relatively affordable.

The overall aim is to have the right gear for better comfort and to improve performance.

So, what to wear for a basketball game? You’ll need a basketball jersey, basketball shorts and basketball shoes.

Basketball Gear

1. Basketball jersey

How do you choose a basketball jersey?

Basketball jerseys have evolved over the years as the fabrics has gradually become lighter.

These days, the ultra lightweight fabric available are durable and they should allow players’ skin to “breathe,” providing ventilation to help players stay cool and prevent overheating. A good jersey should “wick” moisture away and keep players from getting too sweaty and uncomfortable.

At the same time, the jersey should not be so absorbent such that it retains sweat, causing the jersey to become heavy, in turn and adding unnecessary weight.

2. Basketball shorts

Basketball shorts typically share the same fabric as jersey tops, but it is important to get bottoms that are neither too snug nor loose.

Basketball shorts will usually have an inner layer to provide better absorption of perspiration and prevent abrasions. The rubber waistband should not be too tight or else it will cause discomfort from constant abrasion due to body movements when playing a game.

Basketball shorts should be long enough to reach the knee caps. The length varies but generally, longer shorts help to keep thighs warm during games and prevent muscle cramps.

3. Basketball shoes

Getting the right shoes that fit is important as basketball requires a lot of running and jumping. Shoes that fit poorly can cause injury, especially if they do not provide sufficient support.

  High-top Cut

The high-top shoe cut has been associated with basketball. They are popular with basketball players because they provide a high level of ankle support. The shoe extends all the way up to protect the ankles, but as a result, they tend to be heavier as a result of using more material.

  Mid-top Cut

Shoes with a mid-top cut rises just below a player’s ankle. Although it lacks ankle support, it helps players increase speed as the ankle can bend unhindered by the shoe’s material, allowing players to react and run faster.

Choosing the right shoe size

Basketball shoes should not be too tight as they need to allow the foot to have some flexibility and breathing room to manoeuvre about.

To find out how much room to leave in the shoe is appropriate when the shoe is worn, press your thumb into the space between the front end of the shoe and your big toe. If the space available is roughly the length of a thumbnail, the shoe is a good fit.

The other thing to note about shoes is that the upper on the top of a shoe that the foot slips into when it is worn must keep the foot securely in place within a basketball shoe while a player is in action.

The Basketball Player’s Style

Players should assess which type of player they are before purchasing basketball shoes, as different playing styles, such as being a power player, all-around player, or fast player, require different shoes.

Power players will require a high level of cushioning and stability from a heavier shoe. All-around players need a moderate amount of shock absorption from relatively lightweight basketball shoes. Fast players need moderate support as they have quick reaction times and flexibility.

5 reasons why you won't get better over the summer.

Nikita Yamshchikov, founder of Ball In

@nikyamschikov

Summer is a great opportunity for basketball players to improve. There are few competitions, mostly only 3v3. Sites are freely available around the clock. Train, develop and prepare for the next season, what could be better?

In the harsh reality, things don't work like that. Really add a couple of players out of a hundred. Keep 5 reasons why this could be about you. For each we have added a solution. This point will help you progress.

Reason 1

You will miss training for a couple of weeks because of exams and a couple more weeks just to relax. In total, you miss a month without normal training. Maybe you will play once a week or quit, but in any case, this will not be the kind of work to progress. At best, you won't lose shape.

Yes, you need a rest and it's normal to live a week without basketball. But turning off for a whole month from the process is an unaffordable luxury. After 30 days without training, you will not be able to immediately join the process, which means you will lose more time.

Solution: Stay out of the process for more than a week. If you have exams, leave training for an hour and a half a day. This will not prevent you from passing everything, but for this you may have to sacrifice entertainment.

Reason 2

“I don’t have a playground here”, “I went to the village, and there is no one / nothing there”, “The ball is bad”, “The asphalt is broken” and another thousand excuses for training. Sometimes it comes from laziness. Sometimes due to not understanding what to do and how to be in the conditions received, for example, if there is no ring.

These excuses are common among young players. This does not happen on purpose, but it interferes with development. Basketball is a unique game, to get better you only need a ball and a couple of square meters. Sometimes even the ball is not needed, you can always work on the body.

Solution: Making the most out of any situation. If there is not even a ball, work on the body. If there is no ring, you can still train and improve your dribbling + body. You will always find something to do. The main thing is to have a goal and a plan of action that suits your conditions.

Reason 3

“Let's go play” - “Let's go”. And so every day. Play cool. Play great. Need to play. Only most often this "game" looks very passive and has no meaning and purpose. Lazy threes, no defense and no attempt to do something beautifully, if at all possible in such conditions. Such games only waste your time and energy, but do not move forward.

Solution: Don't just play. Soberly assess whether the game will help you become better. If not - better give up and practice.

Reason 4

Today you will go to the court to practice a three-pointer. Tomorrow you will only shoot from under the basket to work on the form of the throw. The day after tomorrow you will jump, and another day you will do something for dribbling. Every day you do a variety of workouts and exercises.

This is not the worst case, especially if you still train every day. Only the result and progress will be random because there is no system.

Solution: Set a specific goal and schedule your workouts. It would be better to find a coach/mentor and work with him.

Reason 5

For advanced. You have a lot of training. Every day you work hard and give 200%. This is great! Just feel your body and don't forget to recover. Your muscles may become tight/tight and your nervous system "tired", which will impair body control and mess up your movements. The potential outcome in this case is injury. You know why it's bad.

Solution: Learn to feel your body better and monitor your condition. Add recovery procedures to the training plan. Sleep well and eat well.

How to spin a basketball on your finger

day. After a week of practicing your skills, you will master the technique of this trick and show it to your friends. In the step-by-step instructions below, we will show you how to learn how to spin a basketball on your finger.

Tossing the ball correctly

You can practice on the sports ground, near the house or even in the apartment, but in any place you need to take into account the environment. For example, when practicing a trick in a room, the ball can bounce and break fragile objects. When a place is found and inventory is prepared, you can begin training. Initially, you need to learn how to properly hold and throw the ball into the air:

  • Take the ball so that its stripes are vertical. Horizontal scrolling looks ineffective and it is very difficult to catch a projectile from this position.
  • Select throw method:
    • Two hands. You need to keep the ball not on the sides, but so that 1 hand “looks” at you, and the second from you. Having fixed the object, sharply spread your arms and slightly “throw” the ball up.
    • With one hand. To throw with one hand, place your fingers along the lines of the ball. It is important that there is free space between the palm and the inventory. Lightly squeeze the ball. Turn the brush outward until it stops, and then gently turn it back. At the last moment, you need to give additional rotation to the ball with your fingertips. But we do not recommend using a large one, because. this will upset the balance and the ball will fly away.
  • Throw the ball parallel to the floor, do not let the projectile wobble. It is important that when thrown, the projectile rises above eye level. When its bottom surface is visible, the ball is easier to catch.

These steps must be repeated until fully automatic. Usually it takes two days. When the throws are confident, you can move on to the second level.

Learning to catch the ball

Once you have learned how to throw correctly, try catching the ball with your finger. To do this, remember the following nuances:

  • You need to catch the projectile on the nail, not the finger itself. In this case, it is important that the brush is turned with the palm towards you.
  • The finger must be placed strictly in the center, at the junction of the vertical lines, otherwise the ball will slide off.
  • When your finger touches the ball, gently and smoothly lower your hand down. So you will improve the cushioning, the inventory will not bounce, and you will not damage your finger.

This stage is one of the most difficult and requires patience on the part of the freestyler, athlete and just wanting to master the skill. When you learn how to catch the ball, at first it can control you: jump off and make you “run” after it to keep your balance.
