Like most other ball games, to win in a game of basketball is to land more baskets or outscore your opponent and yield a higher field goal percentage.

Therefore, it is essential that you are familiar with the different ways that you are able to make a basket and score points. In this article, we will be sharing with you the different types of basketball scoring shots and how you can execute them.

To shoot accurately, square your shoulders to the basket and place your feet shoulder length apart. With your knees bent slightly and back leaning towards the basket, put the fingers of your shooting hand under the ball and tuck your elbows close to your body.

Flick your wrist towards the hoop to release the shot. Your index finger should follow through facing the basket after releasing the ball.

Here are a few commonly used types of shooting in basketball.

1. Jump Shot

A jump shot is most frequently used for a mid to long-range shots, including shooting beyond the arc.

To achieve balance when facing the basket for a jump shot, you have to take a wide stance, usually, shoulder width apart, bend your knees and square your shoulders.

Make a fluid, explosive upward leap and at the apex of the jump, follow through by shooting the ball.

When the ball is released at the apex of the jump shot, keep your elbows straight to ensure that it is pointed in the direction of the basket. Concentrate on the flicking of your wrist and holding it in position to provide the ball with momentum and spin.

2. Hook Shot

A hook shot is when the shot is made while your body is not directly facing the basket.

To execute a shoot shot, you need to face the basket sideways so that your shooting hand dribbling the ball is facing away from the basket. This is also the stance to help guard the ball against your opponent. This makes it difficult for your opponent to try to block the shot due to the distance created between you and your defender.

To make the shot, jump with your left foot pushing off the ground if you’re making a right-handed shot or vice versa. The shooting arm should be slightly bent, and it should thrust upwards as the ball is lobbed with a flick of the wrist.

The hook shot is a staple of many players in the National Basketball Association, including notable stars such as George Mikan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Yao Ming.

3. Bank Shot

A bank shot is when any shot made where the ball hits the backboard before heading into the net.

To execute a bank shot, treat it as though you’re taking a jump shot but this time, aim slightly higher by shooting for the backboard.

Jumping higher can also sometimes mean jumping slightly backwards when aiming for the basket to prevent defenders from blocking the shot.

The ball should not be hitting the rim too much after bouncing off the backboard. The ball should then bounce off the backboard and into the net.

4. Free Throw

A free throw is a shot attempt given to a player that was fouled and it is taken on the free throw line. The player must stay behind the free throw line when taking the shot.

Before attempting to shoot, one must maintain their balance. Find the nail or dot in the middle of the free throw line and line your shooting foot against it. For right-handed shooters, the shooting foot will be the right foot and vice versa.

Your elbow on your shooting hand must be lined up to make an “L” right under the ball with fingers spread out for the backspin.

Aim for the back of the rim with your eyes focusing on the rims, do not look at the ball while you execute the shot.

Follow through your shot by keeping your hands up in the air for a second or two after releasing the ball.

5. Layup

A layup is a shot made from short range by a player moving towards the basket. Usually utilising the backboard if he approaches the hoop from an angle. This is also one of the most basic and common way of scoring a basket in the game.

To execute a layup, dribble the ball towards the basket. If you’re on the right flank, dribble the ball with your right hand.

At the three-point line, or within two metres from the basket, take two giant strides towards the hoop and attempt to score by throwing the ball at the top corner of the backboard or lay the ball gently into the basket.

6. Slam Dunk

The dunk is usually the most spectacular shot and is one of the toughest feats in basketball.

It usually requires more jumping ability than shooting skills.

To execute a slam dunk, dribble and charge towards the hoop when ready to execute the dunk.

Jump explosively to get as high as possible and leap towards the hoop. Lift the ball above the rim and push or slam it forcefully through the rim.

Two and Three-Pointers

The most basic ways to score in basketball are two-point and three-point field goals. When a player puts the ball through the hoop during play, it is known as a field goal. Field goals are worth either two or three points. The amount of points a basket is worth depends on where it is shot from on the court. Shots taken from within the three-point arc are worth two points and shots taken beyond the three-point line are worth three points.

The three-point arc is a curved line that runs from the end line near the basket out to a little over halfway between the end line and mid-court. Based on the level of play, the distance of the arc from the basket varies. The arc is 19 feet, 9 inches from the basket on high school basketball courts. The arc is 20 feet, 9 inches from the basket on college basketball courts. The dimensions of the arc in the NBA are slightly different, as the sides of the arc are located 22 feet from the center of the basket and extend 16 feet, 9 inches from the baseline. The arc then flattens and is 23 feet, 9 inches from the rim.

Free Throws

A free throw occurs after a player is fouled by another player in the act of shooting the ball. After the player is fouled, gameplay stops, and the player goes to the free throw line, which is located 15 feet from the front of the backboard. The player is then given one, two, or three separate attempts to shoot the ball into the basket. The number of free throws a player is given depends on if they were shooting a two or three-pointer and if they made the shot when they were fouled. Each free throw the player successfully makes is worth one point. When shooting a free throw, players must make sure that both of their feet are behind the free throw line to be awarded the points.

Free throws can also be awarded to a team when their opponent commits a technical foul or a foul while they are in the bonus.

Bonus

Players will also shoot free throws if they are fouled in any manner while they are in the bonus. The bonus is a situation when any defensive foul for the remainder of the quarter will result in the opposing team shooting two free throws. The bonus is activated when a team reaches a certain number of fouls, which depends on the level they are playing at.

In the NBA, the bonus begins when the opposing team commits their fifth foul in a quarter or two fouls within the last two minutes of a quarter.

In college basketball, there is a bonus and a double bonus. The bonus begins once a team commits their seventh foul in a half. In this case, any defensive foul will result in the opposing team shooting a “one-and-one.” This means that a player needs to make the first free throw in order to get a second shot. Once a team commits their tenth foul of the half, they get two free throws regardless of whether or not they make the first one. This is called the “double bonus” and is usually stylized as “bonus+” on the scoreboard.

The bonus rule was created to discourage excessive fouling in basketball.

“And Ones”

A unique way to score in basketball is through an “and one.” An “and one” is when a player is fouled in the act of shooting and successfully makes the basket. This is referred to as an “and one” because even though the player made the basket, they are given the chance to score an extra point through a free throw attempt. If the player is fouled while shooting a two-point shot and makes the basket, they have the chance to earn three points on that play. If the player is fouled while shooting a three-point shot and makes the basket, they have the potential to earn four points on that play. 

Referees

Basketball games feature a set of game officials called referees. In relation to scoring, referees determine if each basket is legal and whether it is a two or three-point basket. They are also responsible for calling fouls that result in free throws and violations during gameplay, such as travels and goaltending. Referees will determine if a shot was taken before or after the clock expired, which can result in last-second baskets counting or being overturned. While players are the ones making shots and scoring points, referees have a major impact on the game.

In basketball, teams score points by successfully shooting the ball through the hoop. There are various ways to score in basketball:

  • Field goals are shots made during play from anywhere on the court, except free throws.

1. Hands up

Also, do not forget to train the throwing technique from the opposite position. The next step in mastering the throwing technique from a place is a straight throw in relation to the shield. To take the correct position, you need to go a couple of steps straight from the foul line in the direction of the ring. You should not go too close under the hoop, as in this case the ball's flight path will have a very large arc, which increases the difficulty of hitting the target. The target in this case is the middle of the upper side of the rectangle depicted on the shield. If the ball hits the front arc of the ring during the rebound and does not hit, the force of the throw should be reduced. After mastering the throws from a place, it is necessary to move on to throws on the move. The throw begins immediately after the second free step, simultaneously with the removal of the foot to the third step. It is optimal to choose the moment of the throw when the body is at the highest point and is about to fall. Approximate start of free steps when moving at an angle to the ring is the second marker of the trapezoidal zone, in case of rectilinear movement - the penalty line. The first free step should be performed from the foot with which hand the throw will be performed.

The performance of a basketball throw can be conditionally divided into three phases: preparatory main final In the preparatory phase, the player visually determines the goal, provides an opportunity for an unhindered throw by performing backward, sideways bends, and jumping. The main phase is determined by the direct work of the hand, giving the ball the necessary speed, trajectory and rotation. The start of the final phase is the beginning of the free flight of the ball.

Three step throw The three step throw technique is practiced as follows. First you need to stand on the line of the penalty area, a little obliquely in relation to the ring. It is necessary to take a couple of steps for a run, while not forgetting to dribble. As soon as you feel that you have already accelerated enough, take one long step with your right foot. The ball should already be in your hands at this point. After that, a short step is taken by rolling from heel to toe with the left foot. At the same time, you push off with your left foot, swing with your right foot, and carry the ball over your right shoulder so that it rests on your right hand, and your left supports it to the side. At the highest point of the jump, the arm is straightened to the end in the elbow joint, the throw ends with a sweeping movement of the hand. After the ball is released, the player lands on both feet. The description of the throwing technique on the move is given for players throwing from the right side. In the situation with the passage on the left, accordingly, everything is done the other way around: you take the first long step with your left foot, and the second with your right. As a rule, in the technique of throwing from a three-step, another way to throw the ball into the basket is used - a throw from the backboard. Its essence lies in the fact that, being at an angle with respect to the shield, it is quite difficult to throw the ball directly into the ring. This is where the white square line drawn on the shield around the bow of the ring comes to our aid. It is quite simple to train the technique of throwing from the side. To do this, you need to stand within the penalty area, at an angle of 45 degrees with respect to the shield. To throw the ball from this position, you need to hit the upper corner of the square line on the shield closest to us. That is, if you are to the left of the ring, you throw it to the upper left corner of this square, and if you are to the right, then to the right. Everything is quite simple and clear.

Jump shot The basic technique for shooting at the opponent's basket in basketball is the jump shot. As a rule, in this way, players try to hit the target from a long distance. This type of throw can be roughly divided into three stages. First you have to get the ball in motion. Having caught it, you take a short stopping step with your left, simultaneously placing your right. Then you take out the ball with your right hand (if you are right-handed) over your head, along the way holding it to the side with your left. Take off from the ground with both feet. The technique of the throw itself is similar to the technique of performing a free kick: when releasing the ball from your hands, remove your left hand, and with the fingers of your right palm, give the projectile a reverse rotation. In the final stage, it is necessary to ensure that the distance between the points of repulsion and landing is approximately equal to 20-30 centimeters, so as not to collide with the player of the defending team.

Then the following description of the technique of throwing from above will help you achieve this. A proper slam dunk begins with the fact that a three-step throw also starts with a running start. Take the allowed two steps, dribbling the ball with your arm and controlling your approach. Jump off your lead foot, opposite your kicking arm, extend your arm towards the hoop and throw the ball into the net. Try throwing with one hand first, as a two-handed dunk requires a higher jump. Coaches recommend starting with a smaller ball as it is a little easier to control. Also, there is a very important point with the landing. This must be done with support on both legs, softening and bending them at the moment of touching the site. Experts strongly advise beginners not to mow under the NBA stars, hanging after the throw on the bow of the ring, since at this moment your balance may be disturbed and it will seem to you that you are falling backwards.

Hoop shot in motion The hoop shot is considered one of the most basic and easiest in basketball. Most of the combinations are intended to allow the player to go under the ring to make this throw. However, this relatively easy throw is prone to misses quite a bit, especially when the player is moving at high speed.

Basic Shot Technique Tips on the Move 1. Hold the ball with the fingertips of both hands, pointing upwards over your head, until the ball is released from your hands. 2. Place the fingers of the throwing hand behind the ball. 3. Carry the ball in front of the body a little closer to one side. 4. Release the ball from your hand at the highest point. With your other hand, hold the ball almost to the end and then take it to the side. 5. When throwing with your right hand, push off with your left foot, when throwing with your left hand, with your right foot, regardless of which side of the ring the throw is made from. 6. Coming out from the side, use the shield. With a direct exit to the ring, perform a “clean” throw. 7. Hit the ball very gently on the backboard. The angle formed by the arm and torso in relation to the backboard reduces the need to spin the ball. 8. Before throwing, raise your head, look at the aiming point. 9. Jump as high as your strength allows. Jump, up, not lengthwise. 10. Learn to land after a throw so that you can quickly return to defense. 11. Reach with the ball to the ring. Don't lean back. The habit of leaning back when throwing is usually caused by the player having practiced a lot on backboards attached directly to the wall.

Two-handed chest throw is mainly used to attack the basket from long distances if there is no active opposition from the defender. This method of throwing is mastered by those involved most quickly, since its structure is close to the structure of passing the ball in the same way.

Main phase: with a sharp turn of the hands and fingers from top to bottom, the player lowers the ball into the ring. Final phase: after the throw, the basketball player lands softly on both feet, taking the “starting” position for further actions.

When repulsed from the site, the ball is carried over the shoulder and transferred to the turned part of the right hand. One-handed overhead jump shot (jump shot) is the main attacking tool in modern basketball. In the competitions of the strongest men's teams in the world, up to 70% of all shots from the field are made in this way, from various distances. There are several varieties of this throw. They are chosen depending on the distances and the characteristics of the counteraction of the defender. Let's analyze this throw from an average distance as a typical one. Preparatory phase: The player receives the ball in motion and immediately takes a blocking step with his left foot. Then he puts his right foot to her, bending his elbows, takes out the ball on his right hand above his head, supporting it from the side-top. Main phase: the player jumps with a push with two legs, while the body is turned directly to the ring, the legs are slightly bent. Upon reaching the highest point of the jump, the player directs the ball into the basket by straightening the right arm forward and upward and with an energetic, but smooth movement of the hand and fingers. The ball is spinning backwards. The left hand is removed from the ball at the moment the right hand begins to move. The distance from the place of separation from the site to the place of landing of the player after the throw should be minimal and be no more than 25-30 cm, which allows him to avoid a collision with a defender. When performing a jump throw from a relatively close distance, there is no need for a large amplitude of extension of the arm with the ball. The main throwing movement is the movement of the hand and fingers, due to which the level of the initial position of the ball immediately before the throw and the point of release of the ball increase - then the player can successfully overcome the opponent's resistance.

Jumping throw with a back tilt of the body was also used to attack the ring from close and medium distances with tight guarding of a tall defender with good jumping ability. The ball is released overhead outside the central field of view of the player - it flies along a hinged trajectory, which makes it difficult to achieve a high accuracy of the throw to a certain extent. Of great importance in the competition is the speed of the throw, or, as they say, its rate of fire. Experience shows that a slow throw is usually met with opposition from opponents that is difficult to overcome. The rate of fire of the throw can be increased by reducing the time for preparatory movements and their implementation.

The one-handed “hook” throw is often used by center players to attack the rim from close to mid-range while being actively countered by a tall defender. Preparatory phase: the player takes a step with his left foot away from the opponent, turns his left side to the shield, slightly bending his left leg. The ball lies on a bent right arm and is supported from above; the head is turned towards the basket. Main phase: pushing off with the left foot, the player jumps up, at the same time takes the right hand with the ball away from the body and lifts it up in an arcuate movement. The left hand, bent at the elbow joint at a right angle, as if fencing off the ball from the defender. The knee of the right leg is pulled up. The ball is released at its highest point as the hand approaches the head. Then it is sent to the basket. With tight guarding and safety net, some centers prefer not to make a full arc with the ball. They carry the ball with both hands away from the defender, then with one hand they carry out only the final part, i.e. throw the ball with a "half-hook".

A one-handed underhand throw is used in approximately the same situations as a two-handed underhand throw in a jump. In addition, some post players have successfully used this throw in combination with turning and feints when grappling close to the opponent's backboard.

Hitting the ball. In a number of playing positions, when the ball bounces off the backboard after a bad shot or flies close to the basket, the player does not have time to land with the ball, aim and shoot. In such cases, you should finish the ball into the ring in a jump with two hands or one. When finishing with one hand, the basketball player manages to get the ball at a higher point. Having jumped out and received the ball on an open hand, the player slightly bends his arm and immediately straightens it, while simultaneously performing a soft final movement of the hand with his fingers (without a slap). When the ball is very close to the ring, it is better to send it with a short push without delaying the brush.

Basic tips for throwing the ball into the ring 1. Follow the ball after the shot, regardless of the method used. 2. Focus on the aiming point of the backboard (if you are going to hit the basket from the backboard) or on the nearest edge of the ring (if there will be a "clean" throw into the basket). 3. Consider the percentage of your shots from different positions. 4. By continuous training, increase the rate of fire, i.e., the acceleration of the process of throwing around the ring. 5. Timing your shot accurately. 6. Learn and practice as many throwing techniques as you can. 7. Learn to use in a particular situation the method of throwing that is most suitable for a given playing position. 8. Develop the ability to throw the ring with the same right and left hand. 9. Learn which throwing trajectory is most comfortable for you. Throw softly. 10. Slightly twist the ball when throwing. This will help the ball fall into the basket if it hits the hoop. 11. Train the ability to maintain balance when throwing. 12. Work on throwing techniques that best suit your physique. 13. Learn to apply this or that throw, depending on the degree of your fatigue. 14. Decide exactly how you will take the free throw on the ring. 15. Listen wisely to sound advice about shooting, but above all rely on your judgment. 16. Learn to use a shield when throwing and be able to determine the degree of elasticity of various shields. 17. Throw the ball into the ring at an angle with the touch of the ball on the backboard, make the rest of the throws “clean”. 18. If you are tired, put a little more effort into the throw than usual. In this case, even with a miss, your partners will have the opportunity to fight for a rebound from the shield. 19.
