NCAA Tournament Ticket Prices

NCAA Tournament ticket prices can vary substantially based on a handful of variables, including the stage of play, the location of the games, and the teams playing. The earlier rounds are typically less expensive. As the tournament progresses and demand for tickets rises in the later rounds, ticket prices tend to increase.

What does a "Full Strip" of tickets mean?

A full strip of tickets includes a ticket to each of the sessions hosted at that venue. For the first and second round locations, this would include tickets to the two afternoon session games, the two evening session games, and the two second round games in the third session. In the case of the Sweet 16 and Elite 8, a full strip would include tickets for the games at the location for both those rounds. In the case of the Final Four, a full strip includes tickets to the two semifinal games as well as the Championship game.

Why are tickets broken into sessions?

Unlike most sporting events, in the case of the NCAA Tournament many tickets include admission to more than a single game. In the First Round, Second Round, and Sweet 16, each session includes admission to back-to-back games. However, in the case of the First Round Session 1 tickets do not include admission to the games in Session 2, and vice versa, even though the games are on the same day.

How does the "possession effect" affect the perception of price?

Price setting for a product or service is the last link in the marketing mix. It is the price that determines the level of costs that corresponds to the benefits of the purchased product. However, both buyers and sellers perceive the same numbers in different ways. In addition, they approach the very process of evaluating the same product in different ways.

To prove this proposition, scientists Ziv Carmon (Ziv Carmon) and Dan Ariely (Dan Ariely) from Duke University (North Carolina, USA) conducted a series of studies, the results of which surprised even themselves.

  • How does price affect the path consumers take to complete a transaction?

The essence of the experiment

Scientists decided to focus on the well-known difference between the two concepts - the selling price (selling price) and the purchase price (buying price). They wanted to find out whether the perception of a person really depends on which "side of the barricades" he is on. The researchers suggested that buyers and sellers focus on different aspects of a transaction. For example, the former tend to think more about their costs, and their calculations are influenced by the average market price. Sellers, during the transaction, rely on the possible benefits and focus on the benefits of owning the product.

100 students from Duke University took part in the experiment. They were asked to rate tickets for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball games. It is worth noting that basketball at this university is a cult and most popular sport, and a small stadium where all games are held is simply not able to accommodate everyone.

The researchers divided the students into two equal groups. "Buyers" had to name the maximum price they were willing to pay for a ticket to an NCAA championship quarterfinal game (assuming they didn't have a ticket).

The "sellers" were asked what the minimum price they would be willing to sell them for (assuming they had only one ticket per game). In addition, the respondents were asked to rate the potential enjoyment they might get from visiting the game and to think of other things that could give them the same pleasure.

  • Pricing lessons: How do hipsters raise beer prices?

The purchase price and the sale price are not the same

As a result of the experiment, it turned out that the purchase price and the sale price, in the minds of students, differ significantly. The value depended on the role played by the participants in the experiment. So, sellers priced their tickets at an average of $2,411, while buyers were willing to spend only $166 for the opportunity to see the game with their own eyes. The price difference is huge!

The researchers also noted that if subjects were brought to the attention of the benefits of owning a ticket before the start of the experiment by asking them to estimate its cost, this manipulation had a positive effect on the purchase price (more than on the sale price). But at the same time, if you draw the attention of respondents to alternative ways of using money before asking them to evaluate tickets, then this manipulation will affect “sellers” more than “buyers”.

In another study in this series, researchers asked 75 students to indicate a price based on 4 factors. The first two were more about buyers, as they are related to costs - this is the base (original) price ($15, $30, or $45) and the discount that was offered to season ticket holders: ($2.50, $10 or $15). Two other aspects were of value to those in the seller's role: the importance of the particular game (regular, quarter-final or final matches) and the climate in the stadium (20° and low humidity, 35° and low humidity, 35° and high humidity).

As the scientists predicted, buyers and sellers pay attention to different aspects of the transaction. Thus, sales prices turned out to be more sensitive to the Game Importance and Climate parameters, while purchase prices were more sensitive to the Base Ticket Cost and Discount attributes.

Researchers also found that the relationship between pleasure equivalent and selling price is stronger. Recall that for ticket holders, the very fact of giving them to someone was a big test, since under the terms of the experiment, students had only one ticket for the game. At the same time, the “Expense Concern” parameter correlates with the purchase price to a greater extent than with the sale price.

Buyers valued the price of a ticket in terms of opportunity cost, while sellers valued it in terms of the value of the experience they would miss by not attending the game. Recall that the division of basketball fans into two groups was random. All that led to such a different attitude towards cost is the simple fact of the presence / absence of a ticket.

Buyers view price in terms of costs, and sellers in terms of the value of the experience they will miss out on

  • Sales psychology: feelings and prices!

Fear of losing or the possibility of winning

But why does this happen? The study explains the phenomenon of "loss aversion". It is based on a pattern that the vast majority of people are subject to: a stronger emotional connection (and a stronger reaction) exists in the area of loss prevention than in the area of additional benefits.

That is why the sellers in the mentioned experiment asked for a higher price, perceiving the exchange of this product as a loss. At the same time, if a person did not purchase a product, he perceived it as just a lost profit.

The experiment of scientists also proves the proposition that when we own something, we value it much more. Even if things do not really have special emotional and material value, we have a strong attachment to them. The phenomenon known as the “possession effect” was discovered in 1980 by the American economic behavior theorist Richard Thaler. Its essence is that a person begins to value something much higher after holding this “something” in his own hands. It is on this phenomenon that the technique of personal selling, which is also called "puppy", is based. A potential client is given to hold the product in his hands or leave it for some time with the future owner. This technique got its name because it is difficult to give away a puppy that you have already let into your house.

One of the authors of the ticket experiment, Dan Ariely, explains this phenomenon in his book Predictably Irrational. When we sell something, we underestimate the profit we get for this thing - the idea arises that we are losing something. To alleviate the unpleasant feeling of parting, we inflate the price.

Besides, the more trouble a thing gives us, the more its price rises in our eyes. For example, if you have assembled furniture yourself, you will value it more than the same wardrobe or bed assembled by a store employee. The fact is that we consider our own efforts applied to a thing as an investment in it and, accordingly, we expect dividends.

Marketers know the tremendous power of the possession effect, so they use a variety of techniques to make customers feel like they already own the item. For example, having bought a gadget with the ability to return it to the store within 30 days, people do not use this opportunity, because it is not easy to give away what they are already used to.
