While there are no matches in Russian basketball, CSKA scout Denis Godlevsky conducts Instagram streams with eminent coaches, including Russian national team coach Sergei Bazarevich, and shares his knowledge with novice colleagues. Izvestia contacted a specialist who spoke about his career, the most talented domestic players, basketball geeks, the professionalism of Nando De Colo and the reasons for the defeat of the national team from Poland at the 2019 World Cup.
— How did you get the idea to stream during the quarantine period?
- I opened my account and thought that it could be a developmental tool for young coaches. I have a lot of novice specialists, players who are interested in learning something new. It seems to me that it is necessary to share experience with them, and it is most interesting to do this in a conversation with people who have already traveled a certain path. I can say that I get good feedback. Perhaps this does not affect the number of subscribers, but there were unexpectedly many personal messages about the nuances of basketball.

— How did you become a coach yourself? Did you play basketball?
— I was in the basketball section, but I quickly realized that I did not have enough physical data. On this topic, we talked with my first mentor Nina Alexandrovna Dolmatova, and she began to orient me towards coaching. I helped her with the younger guys and gradually began to get involved in the profession. At about the age of 16, he began to conduct the first training.
— How did you manage to get to the CSKA sports school from Nizhny Tagil?
— When I worked with children in Nizhny Tagil, I had an idea: if I do my job well, then later I will get to CSKA. I don’t know where such confidence came from, but I sometimes said this to my relatives and friends. And so my friend Nikita, who moved to Moscow to study, found out that Sergei Panov (a long-term captain of CSKA, now the general manager of Nizhny Novgorod. - Izvestia) is opening his own basketball school. He called me and convinced me to give it a try. I arrived in Moscow and we went to meet Panov, who was still an active player then. We were on the subway and got lost. I thought that if we are late, then it’s not fate. In the end, by some miracle, we managed to have a conversation with him. Sergey referred me to his deputy, and after the interview, the next day, we agreed on cooperation. I went to Serbia for an internship for the whole summer, and in September I was supposed to start working in Moscow.
As a result, Panov, after completing his career, headed the CSKA school. Together with Sasha Gruich (head of the youth project of the army team. - Izvestia), they recruited new coaches, including my name. So I ended up in CSKA.
— Do any of your pupils play at a high level in CSKA?
- Grigory Motovilov (point guard of Lokomotiv-Kuban. - Izvestia) - today he has reached the highest. Elkhan Akhmedov plays for the youth team of Khimki. Of those with whom I still had the opportunity to work, I would also single out Slava Fedorchenko. According to the children, he looked very strong, but injuries did not allow him to continue his professional career. Now he coaches at the CSKA school at a very decent level. Sasha Martynov now plays in Superleague-1 (season 2019/20 spent in St. Petersburg "Spartak". - "News").

— Were you the initiator of Motovilov's invitation to the national team before the 2019 World Cup?
- I didn't lobby any of the players in the open camp before the World Cup. Just because of a series of injuries, we were faced with a shortage of defenders, and in a short period of time we had to look at all possible candidates. Not so long ago, I saw Motovilov in the U-20 team, where he worked with Anton Yudin. Therefore, he suggested that Sergei Valerianovich [Bazarevich] look at him. Of course, he joked with me, they say, you are pushing your pupil into the national team, but in the end Grigory really suited us and looked quite decent at the 2019 World Cupin China.
— You worked with Bazarevich at Dynamo, Krasnye Krylia, and now you have reunited with the national team. How did you meet?
- His son - Dima - trained in the CSKA team born in 1997, and I trained in 1998. We crossed paths when Sergei Valerianovich came to Dima's training. Hello, but nothing more. Then I went to the congress of Euroleague coaches in Barcelona, where Bazarevich was also present. We met one day and got to talking. It turned out that we are both interested in scouting, and on this basis our communication began, and then everything went on increasing.
- As far as I heard, Bazarevich cannot stand advice and criticism from his assistants. Is it so?
- Sergei Valerianovich is very critical when he considers the work of assistants. He himself carefully studies each opponent, and he has his own opinion and his own vision of the upcoming game. More often he wants to hear some additional facts that will confirm or refute his conclusions. But these facts must not be distorted. He really can't stand it. The coach accepts advice, but it must be to the point.
— What is the main feature of Bazarevich as a coach?
- He has a huge store of knowledge, a clear understanding and sense of the game. Your built system. He pays a lot of attention to the development and training of players, likes to introduce new interesting tasks into the training process. Many players like this approach.
- Can you think of the two or three most memorable moments in your career so far?
— The first one was when I came to Dynamo and discovered how coaches in a professional club are engaged in their self-development. For example, Alexander Vasin (former head coach of the Russian women's team. - Izvestia) constantly watched some kind of basketball seminars, processed a huge amount of information in addition to the current one. So I realized that I need to constantly work on myself.
The second one is the victory in the Euroleague in the very first year of my stay in the coaching staff of CSKA. Before that, I won trophies in the Krasnye Krylia - the Russian Cup, the Challenge Cup, but the Euroleague is something special. It was an incredible moment. And the third one was the match with the Spanish national team in the game for the third place of EuroBasket-2017, which we lost in a close fight (85:93). They had a very stellar team - the Gasoli brothers, Navarro, Rodriguez, Rubio, people who won a lot of trophies in their careers, but they were so excited about the award that they almost destroyed the dressing room. Honestly, I did not expect this from these guys.
— And the most memorable seminar?
- Just the one where we had a good talk with Sergei Bazarevich. I then worked at the CSKA sports school and paid all the expenses myself. The amount was rather big for me, but I was sure that this contribution would bear fruit. I came to the seminars in a CSKA T-shirt, and this played a certain role. I was noticed by Ettore Messina and a few other basketball people I met. They gave me valuable advice, and I also understood how you can change your attitude to the game by listening to top coaches. Obradovic, the same Messina, Dimitris Itoudis performed ... The latter made a splash. After the lecture, colleagues did not let Dimitris go for another 40 minutes and bombarded him with questions.
— What strikes you the most about the head coach of CSKA?
— The level of his professionalism. When I worked with Dimitris for the first year, I was shocked by the details that he notices, from what angle he looks at different episodes. Before hiring, I had two interviews with him. And then the thought slipped through that even if they didn’t take me to CSKA, then the knowledge that I received from him in two hours of communication would already make me stronger.

— How do you interact with the coaching staff? What are your responsibilities besides parsing an opponent?
- There are several options for which I am responsible. We have a lot of games in the Euroleague and the United League, and all the work is divided into all members of the coaching staff. Someone is processing video, someone is processing statistics, someone is a combination of opponents. The head coach also collects ideas that he wants to present to the players. During home matches I do life scouting. I analyze all the game moments on the computer and try to immediately analyze the key ones. There is no such possibility at away matches, since everything is strongly tied to the quality of the Internet. In such cases, I deal with advanced statistics.
— In terms of home matches, how much time do you have to convey your observations to Itoudis? About 30 seconds while the team walks from the parquet to the locker room?
— No, due to technical issues, I am the last to enter the dressing room when the discussion is already underway. For two quarters there are about 170 game episodes. My task is to find 2-3 key ones that we need to discuss and show to the players during the big break.
— Have you met a basketball geek, a person who was interested in micro-nuances?
— Yes, that was Aaron Miles in Samara. He liked to discuss tactical or statistical things. Usually we had long flights, he sometimes sat down next to me, and throughout the flight we analyzed game episodes, combinations, the smallest details of the game.
— How long do meetings at Bazarevich's and Itoudis's last on average?
- Depends on many factors: the intervals between games, the level of the opponent, the first or second game with the club / team this season. If the average is within 30, maximum 40 minutes to finish the meeting. After that, it is difficult to perceive information.
— How many games do you need to watch a potential newcomer to draw conclusions from?
- If we talk about CSKA, the club often considers players who are in the public eye, they already have a solid reputation. These are not newcomers who need to be tracked, to watch a lot of matches with their participation. It is much more important to find out more in-depth information - about his character, behavior in the locker room, work ethic. This is more important than conventionally watching 10 matches of a player whom everyone already knows very well.
— Has there ever been a basketball player in your career who came to the club as a reserve but managed to come out on top?
- This is the case of Nikita Balashov in Krasnye Krylya. He came from the second team of Dynamo, where he only occasionally pulled himself up to the base games. He did not play very confidently in the first matches for our team, and the management had questions about his stay on the site. But gradually he became one of the best in the Samara club, Nikita played amazingly in defense at that moment. It was possible to train people on his video cuts.

Special mention deserves Dejuan Collins, who also played in Samara. He was already a veteran who had not played for a long time. At the first training session, he made several jerks and stopped. At that moment, everyone had big doubts about his condition and the correctness of his signing. But Dejuan reached the final of the Challenge Cup and almost single-handedly outplayed the Turkish Karsiyaka. Due to the crazy experience and attitude, he played this important match just incredible.
— If we return to Balashov, then why did he fail to gain a foothold in big clubs in the end?
— I will express my subjective opinion. Sergey Valerianovich let Nikita into the starting five, gave him a lot of playing time, believed in his talent. All this is essential for the development of any basketball player. To prove yourself, you need to be able to make mistakes. From other coaches, I think Balashov did not receive such support and trust, because of this his career went in the wrong direction.
- Name a player who surprised you with his professionalism?
- Nando De Colo. This is a man for whom there was not a single passing game, not a single passing training session. No matter which team we play with, the Frenchman has always been 100% ready. He is in pro mode for 24 hours - young players who are lucky enough to be around him should learn this. He knew what he wanted to do in the morning, evening training, between classes. He knew his routine thoroughly and did not experience any unnecessary emotions that could interfere with the case.
- Let's move on to the national team. Is this a special story for you?
— Yes, this is a special team. Players and coaches come there from different clubs not only to defend the interests of their country, but also to get an emotional recharge, to be close to their friends, to chat, to play together. There is such a “chemistry” in the team, where every nuance, every person matters.
— The team went to the 2019 World Cup in a semi-reserve squad. With what thoughts did you fly to China?
— Feelings were mixed. When leaders drop out one after another, it affects the psychological state. But there were other guys who wanted to fight and fight for the highest places. There were no thoughts about doing the minimum task and calming down. I remember well the friendly tournament in China a few days before the start of the group stage of the World Cup. We lost to Argentina, and it caused unsettling feelings. But literally the next day we managed to beat the Spaniards, which gave us confidence. We had other leaders, and each member of that team contributed to the game.
- Could you explain the main reasons for the fatal defeat to Poland in the second group round?
- I think any explanation will look like an excuse. I'll tell you about the technical side of the situation. After a hard, late match, we flew to another city in the early morning. Upon arrival, we sat on our suitcases at the airport for four hours and were forced to immediately go to train, because the next day, due to the early time of the match, there was no such option . I think the accumulated fatigue affected some key episodes at the end of the game. Recovery for players in such tournaments and when changing time zones is of tremendous importance.

— Grigory Motovilov became the main discovery at the 2019 World Cup in the Russian team. In your opinion, can he become a key player in the United League club?
- I can not answer unambiguously. In my stream, Sergey Bazarevich said that he was interested in how Motovilov trains. Not in the sense of whether he lifts a barbell or runs crosses, but how well he can “reveal” pick-and-rolls after a long pause without basketball. Understanding the game at the highest level comes with experience. And to accumulate such experience in order to take leading roles in the club of the United League, it is possible only through playing practice. Gregory has data that can help in the future, but for this there is still a lot of work to be done.
— What can you say about young CSKA core players Alexander Khomenko and Andrey Lopatin? What are their prospects in the first team?
- I think that a lot depends on them. One must be able to withstand competition, criticism, overcome oneself even when nothing works out. Constantly work on the weaknesses of the game, add stability. Only after going through a difficult path, you can get a chance to gain a foothold in the squad.
— Your predecessor Benas Matkevičius has been working as an international scout for Boston since 2014. Would you like to repeat his path or are you more interested in training?
- I would not say that I wanted to repeat the path of Benas. More likely no than yes. I'm more interested in the work of a coach - after all, I would look in this direction.
— Are you ready for independent work or do you still want to learn from experienced colleagues?
— There must be certain circumstances for independent work. I think this is a very important point. But for now, studying at the CSKA coaching staff is an invaluable experience. For this I am grateful to Dimitris Itoudis and the management of the club. Now I would like to get as much knowledge as possible, which can then be applied in practice.

Weak team, Personal graters and Minus morale / Sudo Null IT News
Spent half a day on the basketball court. A good warm-up, and, as the Americans say, “thought-provoking”. I want to share some observations - common, in my opinion, for team sports and team development.
Observation 1: WEAK TEAM
The formation of a team of unfamiliar and unfamiliar players on the site is happening rapidly. We crashed three-on-three, more or less fairly in terms of height, in terms of the level of play, and off we went. If after a couple of minutes you realize that you are in a weak team, it is difficult to enjoy the game.
Funny pattern: think “I'm on a weak team” instead of “we're a weak team”. Moreover, regardless of their own level of play. It would seem that both are the formulation of a fact, but there is a nuance. I tried to repeat to myself several times, to observe the sensations:
- I am in a weak team, I am in a weak team ... I am in a weak team. It feels like something like: “I am my poor thing,” such an injustice happened to me, what can you do.
- We are a weak team, we are a weak team... we are a weak team. At first, a similar annoyance, but with each repetition on the word “we” I start to wind up, a much more active reaction to, in fact, the same fact.
Conclusion:
There are no passive donors in the team. We can change a lot about the original “given” when we take responsibility for teamwork. Think “we” more often when you notice someone else’s or your own weakness.
Observation 2: PERSONAL GRATERS
Several times I observed this effect: you need to break into teams, but you really don’t want to get into the same team with that type. And of course, someday you will have to play with him, or even worse, program in pairs. How to be? Quit the game? Change project?
There is a belief that in a good team everyone should be friends, practically love their neighbor. But many virtuoso teams of athletes, scientists and musicians prove it false. If the task is the reason for the team, then only personal contribution is the reason to play together. Bank robbers gather in teams not for musical and gastronomic tastes, but for the benefit of the cause. In the vast majority of cases, we have something to appreciate even those people whom we do not like.
Output:
We like people who are like us, and the project benefits from people with different styles and skills. Look for reasons to work together instead of reasons to like each other.
Observation 3: MINUS MORAL
Minus morality - this is how in sports and team games they call actions that undermine the morale of the team, endangering the results, health and even life of its members. Regardless of the technique of the game and the stellar composition, often teams that have not learned to recognize and get rid of such actions lose out to those that have strong team spirit and a sense of support.
The effect of minus morale may not be so obvious in the office, but it is perfectly observed on the sports ground. Often the dynamics of the game, and even the score, change radically when getting rid of a player who makes scathing comments and reproaches.
The job of an engineer is to solve problems for which there are no ready-made solutions. Technological expertise plays an important but far from decisive role. Fear of experimentation, inadmissibility of mistakes, criticism from technical leaders are social stoppers that block the flow of value creation.
Output:
The social context determines the team's success. We can achieve better results by agreeing on the rules of engagement. Decide what is “minus morality” for us and gradually get rid of such actions.
