Vadim Vorontsov is the youngest legionnaire in the history of Real Madrid

Vorontsov's story is not at all like the story of another Madrid Russian Yegor Demin. Yegor managed to become a superstar by his age back in Russia; Vadim, on the contrary, hardly played here, choosing a different path of development - training camps abroad, international competitions and participation in the travel team.

What is it, why between Real Madrid and Barcelona Vorontsov chose the former and how Spanish children's basketball differs from Russian - in this article.

Unusual kindergarten

Vadim Vorontsov's childhood was filled with sports: his parents wanted to send him to kindergarten, but there was no place in the state kindergarten; so the boy ended up in the kindergarten of the CDSC - this is the Central Children's Sports Club. The family lived in the CSKA area, and it was necessary to look for a garden there. Of the available ones, there was only a garden with a sports bias.

Everything was serious at the CDSC: from the age of 4, the boy was brought up in the paradigm of “industriousness through sports”, he learned punctuality and responsibility. There was no goal to make an athlete out of every pupil in the kindergarten; here, study was also important - in particular, English. But this did not negate two workouts a day and a 40-minute yoga session. There were four sports - football, hockey, judo and swimming. In the first year of study in such a kindergarten, Vadim became an MVP.

As if all this wasn't enough, a year and a half later Vadim also joined the hockey section of CSKA. He was quickly noticed and connected to training - in addition to those that he already had in kindergarten. He managed, and by the beginning of the summer before school, he had several invitations to CSKA - in football, hockey and swimming.

But Vadim's dad, Vadim Vorontsov Sr., always loved basketball, so he decided to show his son this sport. Everything was nearby in the area, and the boy ended up in CSKA with coach Natalya Pinaeva. She Led Two Ages – 2009and 2007 years of birth - and immediately determined Vorontsova to work with guys two years older. The family began to understand: it is necessary to decide on one sport as soon as possible, because it will not work here to walk snatches.

In the summer the Vorontsovs went on vacation, bought a basketball there, and a month later Vadim said: "I don't want to play hockey, I want to play basketball." Dad won.

“I remember choosing between hockey and basketball,” Vorontsov Jr. shares. — It was really difficult, because I liked both. But after the decisive summer, when I didn’t have the opportunity to play hockey and I only played basketball, it became clear to me that basketball was closer to me.”

Training at CSKA

“In transit through this kindergarten, he went to the CSKA sports school from the first grade and immediately began to work with older guys,” says Vorontsov Sr. “I think it helped him a lot to get off to a good start at his age. Until the last moment, he always played with guys two years older than himself, a year older - only this year he held the first training camp with his age. Naturally, when competing with older and stronger guys, he did not have an advantage in speed, strength and anthropometry - only by playing with his head he could win his place under the sun. I think it's a good story in any sport if it's possible."

Six months later, Vadim's team at CSKA was headed by Vyacheslav Fedorchenko. He trusted Vorontsov's game in the endings, patiently corrected mistakes and saw a good future for Vadim. At the same time, CSKA senior coach Ivan Kucherov worked individually with the boy a lot.

Vadim had a lot of individual lessons, physical training, morning workouts with older guys. The coaches made a plan and followed it clearly. The task was not to overload the player, but to fill the training time with the most effective and necessary at that time. What was needed was high-quality game practice: , for example, Vorontsov played in the Moscow championship only with the strongest opponents, and for his age he joined exclusively in the playoffs.

There were no official all-Russian competitions at this age, but Vadim participated in all the tournaments he could - in the Moscow championship, for example, he was entered for three ages at once. In addition, CSKA sports school students went to the Baltics to play in the Baltic Basketball League and participated in top-level commercial international tournaments. In addition, CSKA traveled to Spain and played friendly matches with the strongest teams.

During one of these trips, a travel team appeared on the scene.

What is a travel team

In one of the tours of the Baltic Basketball League CSKA met with a strong Lithuanian team VKM, which had not lost to anyone for two years, and won in its own home hall. Vorontsov stood out in this game, and after the match, one of the well-known basketball functionaries approached dad with an invitation to participate in his project. The project was to attract promising children from all over the world to participate in mini-basketball tournaments. Once this functionary, David Fatu, worked as a coach in Toulouse, but then he moved to the Baltic States, went into business and as a hobby began to take teams to various tournaments - including the USA, Australia, but mostly traveled around Europe.

“Back then, we treated this with distrust, and began to ask our friends what kind of person, what drives him, what kind of project,” says Vadim Vorontsov. - In the end, everything was confirmed. This Frenchman created his team in the likeness of American systems. I got into this idea. Literally a few months later we went, played quite well. We realized that you can’t cook only in Russia, in our basketball, that there is another kind of basketball, that you need to get bumps, learn and try different games - Baltic, Balkan and especially Spanish ".

Travel teams originated in America in the 70s and still exist. Then it was a pretty simple story: there is a club, and the club has schools, these schools gather teams and play in the summer tournament, and players from other cities and states join them. This movement began to gain momentum, associations and leagues began to appear, then famous personalities began to join them - for example, there is a travel team of LeBron James, Kevin Durant, teams of famous actors and singers. They take groups under their patronage, for them it is such a hobby, entertainment. Gather children and give them a start in life.

In European realities, this is not so common, but similar projects work in Italy, Switzerland, and Spain. Often players from 5-6 countries gather in one team - they get to know each other and play with the same teams. Before Vadim Vorontsov, Russians did not participate in such camps (or, at least, this is not known).

“In addition to my son, I took two or four people with me, that is, those who were familiar to me, accessible, whose parents agreed,” says Vorontsov Sr. - They were looking for money. Those who could not pull it financially were helped in various ways. For two years we skated actively, played in Catalonia and in other areas. Sometimes we won against good teams like Barcelona, Hoventut. At some point, they realized that Vadim gave out his best games on the road [and not in CSKA] - there was a certain atmosphere there, the coach motivated me a lot, individual skills came to the fore. It is very difficult to play in 2-3 training sessions, each time there are new lineups. Therefore, the one who understands basketball better, who is more gifted, draws. In essence, this is the mode of the national team from an early age .”

“The first time it was a little scary - a new team, a different language, a new coach,” Vorontsov Jr. recalls. - But after a couple of games you quickly get used to it, and it becomes easier. I liked the practice with foreign teams, I basically like the fast basketball they play more.

Vorontsov and travel team

The Vorontsovs traveled regularly and tried their hand at various travel teams. Vadim liked this atmosphere, he lived from one tournament to another. In the intervals - or when it was not possible to go - dad tried to arrange participation in some other tournaments for his son, because there were not enough trainings with CSKA.

“Top-level teams have a problem finding playing practice with equal teams,” explains Vorontsov. — This is also true in children's basketball, because in U12 children can show meaningful basketball. Going to an expensive tournament in the Baltic States for the sake of one or two games or holding the first stages of the Russian championship without a single tight game is everywhere. We tried to find these matches in different countries, I contacted many tournament organizers, found out their level, looked for friendly games for CSKA. If a team wins "+30", it's bad for both it and its opponent. Some have to remove the crown and tune in to the next serious opponent; others need psychological rehabilitation and search for motivation to continue playing basketball.

The coronavirus pandemic prevented Vadim from playing in several important competitions. Among them was La Roda - teams usually prepare for it purposefully, this is the main U12 tournament in Europe, a category A competition. La Roda is a Spanish town that has almost nothing but a basketball hall, and since this place has no home advantage none of the teams have venues; this tournament has been held there for 25 years. The line-up is always top-notch: even before the pandemic, the teams of Spain, France, Italy and other countries, as well as European top clubs, came.

La Roda is played once per generation of players, and a whole generation has been dropped due to the cancellation. But the tournament for 2008 was canceled - Vadim planned to play in it, but in general he was born in 2009. A year later, nothing could stop him.

“In the second year of the pandemic, everyone trained as best they could. Fortunately, in Russia and specifically in CSKA, training did not stop for a week. The school management went along, developed a regulation that if any cases arise, then a separate team goes into quarantine, while the rest continue to train. This allowed them to get in good shape by the end of the season. La Roda in 2021 was held in July, at that time European countries had just begun to open, but not for Russians. We realized that it is impossible to get there legally, but this chance is given once in a lifetime - and we decided. A lot of fake documents, a legend for transfers and control ... At that time, there was a high percentage of denied boarding. All in all, it was a big adventure for us. I also took two Russian guys and basically took responsibility for everything.”

But everything worked out. At La Roda, the team in which Vorontsov played beat Barcelona, at the last second could not drag Real into overtime and, in general, although they did not win, they played decently. Vadim went for the MVP title until the last game, and eventually got into the symbolic five of the tournament.

The main thing that players get at such competitions is recognition. The halls are full of scouts, representatives of various agencies. Vorontsov Sr. thought that it makes no sense to twitch and try to get somewhere, because this is usually done at the age of 15-16. But on the way back to Russia, he got a call.

“One of the well-known Russian agents called. To which I was very surprised, I didn’t even have the thought that someone could be seriously interested in a 12-year-old child. At the request of his Spanish colleagues, he offered to look at some options, and immediately sent me a video clip, which was made by the Spaniards. The organizers of the tournament themselves have not yet managed to do anything. I didn’t even know how to relate to this - with distrust, not seriously, because my son is 12 years old and there were no plans to move from his native CSKA. We flew to Moscow, another agent called, another one ... They began to offer options. There were general chats with the sports directors of the academies. We began to communicate within the family. At that time, we decided that we would listen to everyone, we would not offend anyone, ”recalls Vorontsov.

Training in Spain

David Fatou's travel team is for U12s only. In January 2022, Vadim turned 13 years old, and the Vorontsovs needed to figure out what to do next. Dad wanted his son to continue to play in Spain - periodically train in club systems or play individual tournaments, it doesn’t matter. The Spaniards develop in children the desire to play high-speed basketball, move the ball, and from a young age quickly move from defense to attack. But perhaps the main advantage of the Spanish training systems is that they allow children to make mistakes and be relaxed in any situation. The Vorontsovs liked it.

“FIBA rules are the same, but the content of the game is completely different,” says Vorontsov. - Spaniards under 16 almost never use screens, they don’t play pick-and-rolls in attack, they promote cut-offensive with sharp openings and jerks, they cultivate the ability to play without the ball, you don’t have to give the ball to the referee to withdraw from the sideline, which increases the pace of the game, no one individualizes, everything is focused on the team movement of the ball. Double defense and zone pressing is allowed from the start so that the player quickly learns to make decisions before he gets into a trap. Therefore, the Spaniards are ready for pressure at an older age, they play like this from 10-11 years old. In general, the system is focused on the development of quick decision making. For example, if the Spanish coach takes a time out, then, most likely, after it, exactly those players who played before the pause will enter the floor, and the replacement will follow in a minute. That is, the coach will explain what he wants from the player and give him the opportunity to try to do it; if he fails, then he will replace it - this happens even in the finals. Coaches trust their basketball players, and if you played well in terms of timing and placement, but didn’t shoot in a free position a couple of times, then wait for a replacement. If the team played on you, and you don’t give an sharpening pass and don’t shoot, they are punished for this - it’s the other way around with us. There is no rule to play in fives at younger ages: yes, this is done so that all players get time and develop evenly, but in Spain the coach already allows everyone to play. But due to the absence of this rule, variability appears and there is no need to guess, as in sports lotto, what combination the opponent will have. The Spaniards immediately after U12 play with the ball "seven", without transitional sizes, there is no need to get used to it again with a frequent change of generations of teams. There are a lot of nuances."

The Vorontsovs managed to arrange trainings in Spain. For example, dad knew the scout of the Barcelona youth project well and sometimes wrote to him, asking if his son could come to train with the team for a couple of weeks. In response, he received: "Well, come." Vadim rode and trained. He had no specific conditions of arrival or obligations; he just came to training and showed himself. Vorontsov Sr. says that after returning to Russia he saw a fuse in his son, noticed how liberated he began to play.

At the same time, my father continued to communicate with various agents who from time to time invited me to participate in tournaments. Once Vadim was invited to play for Barcelona, and a day later they called and invited him to play for Real Madrid. It was here that Vorontsov Sr. realized that this was one and the same tournament, and communication with the clubs should already be transferred to some kind of official plane.

The choice was not easy. In addition to Barça and Real Madrid, several other Spanish clubs wanted Vorontsov. But even under the condition that their systems are also good and also allow for rapid development, nevertheless, the opportunities - infrastructure, residence, finance, and so on - were incomparably greater between the two giants.

The Vorontsovs negotiated, but did not burn any bridges. The family decided that they needed to play in the tournament for Real Madrid. But it turned out that the roster was already full, and Vadim ended up in Barcelona. I had a good tournament in terms of age a year older, joined the team, got used to it and began to think what to do next. It was October 2021.

Everything went to the fact that the boy would end up in Barcelona: the family liked a kind of “red-blue brotherhood”, and Vorontsov Jr. had already managed to get to know the guys from the team and make friends with them. The Vorontsovs attended a trial at Real Madrid, held several training sessions in Madrid and took a break - after all, in Barcelona Vadim was accepted as a native, plus, there is the sea. At some point, Juan Carlos Navarro, who until recently headed the club's youth project, even approached dad and offered to stay.

“When Vadim finished the tournament, we took a break of 2-3 days to decide where to stay,” says Vorontsov Sr. - It was a very difficult choice, because it was great both there and there, they got used to it, everyone liked it, the attitude was excellent. Personally, I could not choose on a sporting basis. The programs are different, I will not go into details, but they are both at a very high level, a serious attitude to physical form, and to details, and in general in general. The daily routine, food, study - everything is fine.

“I liked Barcelona,” says Vadim. - Before I arrived, I had already played with this team several times and knew many of the guys. When the choice arose between the two clubs, I really wanted to choose Barcelona, because I had already played the tournament for them, lived with the players and became good friends with them. I spent only four days with Real Madrid and went to three training sessions. It seems to me that if it were not for the lack of English at school, I would have chosen Barcelona ... But after a couple of weeks at Real Madrid, I realized that I made the right choice.

As a result, the choice was made in favor of Real Madrid, and one of the main factors was the fact that in Catalonia the school was taught in Catalan and Spanish. The family decided that English was still more promising, especially since Vadim was already fluent in it.

Barcelona called and wrote for another month and was unable to believe that the Vorontsovs eventually chose Real. But one of the Spanish giants would still find himself in such a situation; CSKA found itself in the same situation, from which Vadim also had to leave - perhaps it was Vorontsov who was not enough for the young "army team", who recently lost the championship to their peers from Perm.

The Vorontsovs had two plans:

Plan A was to get a student visa and actually move and start training in January. But Vadim was about to turn 13 years old, he was the youngest legionnaire in the history of the "creamy" and no one knew if he was psychologically ready for a full-fledged move.

Therefore, Real Madrid proposed plan B, which meant that Vorontsov would travel to tournaments and play in session mode, but would remain in Russia until the end of the season.

In general, Real Madrid takes care of the adaptation system so that both the player and his family are psychologically comfortable. Initially, the plan was that at this age, family members would come every month to his son, and he himself would sometimes go on vacation to Russia. But life has made its own adjustments, and travel has become much more complicated. Vadim showed character and at such a young age he went through the adaptation on his own. There were no problems even with the language barrier: initially, Vorontsov did not know a word of Spanish, but after a few months he began to communicate tolerably, no longer required translation in training, and successfully passed the exams at a serious school in Madrid. I missed the first six months in the class, but thanks to the hardening of the CDSC kindergarten and the developed sense of timing, I learned to solve my problems.

And most importantly, he accepted the philosophy of Real Madrid.

“Before, I was always there and helped, prompted,” says dad. - Now there was no such opportunity, and the son went his own way on his own. I am confident in the correctness of the choice, today he found himself in an ideal environment for himself, and I fully trust his development to the club's system.

Everything is there for this. For example, three mentors live in the residence - they are former players with a psychological education, they help, support, solve problems and give advice - anyone can even play ping-pong with the child while the rest are in training and he is left alone. The base also has clinical and sports psychologists, as well as assistant coaches who immerse themselves deeply in the lives of players. But they themselves do not relax: everyone got there not by chance and knows what kind of competition he will face. This environment builds character and motivates.

All this allowed Vadim to move to Madrid and immediately join the team.

“The conditions at the residence are excellent,” says Vorontsov Jr. - Delicious food, spacious rooms - I like it. It is difficult to live away from my parents, but I constantly communicate with them, and life is much easier this way. At the residence, all the guys are focused on basketball, but when there is free time, everyone jokes and supports each other. All in all, the environment is amazing."

Injury and delayed debut for Real Madrid

Vorontsov's full-fledged debut for Real Madrid was delayed by an offensive injury that he received at his first training session in Madrid. Vadim injured his foot and flew to Russia to recover.

“We returned to Moscow and began to think,” says Vorontsov Sr. - He just tried a little bit of that life, that atmosphere, the period of addiction passed. Walking on crutches, he said that's it, he's ready, he liked it there, he's mature. We in the family have also already digested and accepted. Before the New Year, we signed a contract. The club offered a 6-year agreement, after 16 years it can be re-registered as a professional one. As the director of the youth program told us, he has never had younger athletes. I would like to note the careful attitude towards the players in the club: the doctors immediately joined in the recovery, the Spanish doctors were in contact and acted together with Alexei Rykunov, the surgeon who dealt with exactly the same injury to Mikhail Kulagin. After we were allowed to start exercising without restrictions in Moscow, Real Madrid doctors spent another month and a half in rehabilitation and brought Vadim to team training, increasing the degree of contact. But players are not squeezed like a lemon, they do not demand results here and now. They allow you to recover and do not overload, health is in the foreground here.

As a result, in February Vadim moved to Madrid for permanent residence and is still there. Now he is 13 years old. He is not tied to a team of a certain age - the contract only implies getting into the system, and how the coaches will decide next, only they know. Despite the long period of recovery and return to playing form, Vadim managed to make his debut for the team born in 2007 and has been constantly training since 2008.

“I get here what I was looking for - I can progress with the elders and hone my leadership skills in games with my age. Coaches say I'm even better with seniors because I "read" the game. The system here is focused on the fact that, moving from age to age, I already know what awaits me, I already know the philosophy of the team, I know combinations, requirements and I am ready to effectively interact with partners on the site from the first minutes of .

Children's basketball in Spain is not the same as in Russia. There, people go to watch matches regardless of the age of the players, and this is not only the parents of the players: there are several thousand people in the halls, and some broadcasts on YouTube are gaining 10 thousand views. The finals of children's tournaments are shown on national television, they are commented by professional commentators, and the competitions themselves are actively supported by sponsors - even the halls are branded. All this helps the players: when they get into the U16 team, half the country already knows about them.

In the spring of 2022, Vadim managed to take part in four international tournaments and got into the symbolic five in all of them. I even received an invitation to the viewing camp of the Russian national U14 team, but could not come because of my studies.

“The club sees Vadim in the position of a playmaker, they actively develop him in this, often even to the detriment of the team result,” says Vorontsov Sr. - I was told that Sergio Rodriguez is the prototype, a player who can control the pace and organize the game in the opponent's half, not aimed at scoring, but when the team sags, he is able to take over the game. In addition, Vadim is able to defend against the opponent's leaders. As I understand it, in the Spanish academies, it is from the first number that the team building at a younger age begins. Often they are fast and smart Spaniards, then “big” is added as they grow older, often these are dark-skinned guys from Africa. Further, when screens start to play, wingers and pure shooters appear. It is very pleasant that the son withstood the competition with the local guys in his position, because he does not have impressive anthropometry, an ordinary guy, but now it is around him that the team is being further built.”

The goals for the next season are to win the championship of Spain in terms of age, take the Minicopa tournament and gain a foothold in the senior team rotation. This is not yet the team in which Yegor Demin plays, but is close to her in age. By the way, Vadim and Yegor live across the wall from each other and learn Spanish with each other.

Vorontsov Sr. continues his Jumpball.ru project to work with travel team.

“Despite everything that is happening in the world, Russian guys continue to travel for international practice and progress. Today I have the opportunity to individually and as a team organize such cases: to Europe, to the USA by age from U11 to U18. There were many partners and connections among the same basketball enthusiasts. My goal is to make sure that Russian guys get a start in life through the sport of ,” says Vadim’s dad.

By the way, he has already sent not only his son to Spain. But more on that next time.

"Analytical equipment can theoretically replace a person." 20 naive questions for a basketball scout - I Feel Devotion - Blogs

CSKA scout Denis Godlevsky (@dgodlev) says:

• what is the job of a scout;

• what are the trends in European basketball;

• which of the trainers is the most interesting;

• why basketball is a smart game;

• and how to become a scout.

1. What is the Scout's job?

In a nutshell, in the match review, the scout answers certain questions. The more questions, the more answers he has to find.

For example, I want to know if a team is running into a fast break. If he runs, then how many times, how the “big” ones run, how the little ones run, whether they attack from under the ring or watch the throws in the transition.

These are the questions I have to answer. A fast break is an example, there can be many variations depending on what the head coach requires.

Another example: the head coach is interested in what interactions the opposing team plays. Then the scout looks at the interactions, what they are called, how many times they were played, how effectively they were played.

The game is divided into these details.

2. Why should a scout watch matches live?

I can see things live that are very hard to find on video. If a scout has the opportunity to watch matches live, then this opportunity should be used. I know that in the days of Jonas Kazlauskas, the scout flew to the games of the nearest opponent. I don’t fly to games, but when Khimki played in Mytishchi, I regularly went there to look at both Khimki and their rivals.

Watching the game live, you can see, for example, the names of interactions that are very necessary for preparation and at the same time it is very difficult to see them on the video. These are signals, this is the language that the team communicates in… Sometimes teams hide these interactions, like Barcelona, which comes up with complicated/unusual names for interactions. Or the coach says something only to the point guard, and he passes it on to the partners - and then no one can know at all that the team will play in the next possession. Well, or simply shows the interaction so that rivals do not see. Live you can hear what the coach calls, and use it further in preparation.

3. How is the report communicated to the team?

Our entire coaching staff works in preparation for the game, everyone does their part of the job. There is no such thing that one coach was responsible for all the preparations - there are a lot of games, and they go one after another, it would be very difficult for one.

A video presentation is made for the team, various printed materials are distributed to the players so that they study personalities, tendencies, actions that can be used against us, and our possible countermeasures.

This is important for the players. How well they learn this knowledge is an individual question. They receive information, and when they enter the court, they must know what the opponent will do. I know, for example, that when Andrei Kirilenko came to CSKA, he asked the coaches for even more information than what was given to the players for preparation.

4. What does a scout do during matches?

During away matches I am on the bench. I have some work to do while playing. If I see signals that the opponent wants to use, then I suggest what will happen on the court now. Then we try to convey all this to the players.

During home games, I don't sit on the bench, but at the side of the computer. I disassemble the game on the computer, into episodes. If the coach wants, then in the big break we will have material that can be shown to the players. There can be anything - a bad defense, a good defense, our mistakes or something in the opponent's performance that can be shown additionally. For example, the opponent put a zone defense on the last possession and is going to play it further. It makes sense to show how we act, or suggest how to act in the future.

A picture helps convey information more clearly.

5. When are you satisfied with your job?

I'm happy if there is a result, but the result somehow depends on the players. Whatever we do, athletes come to the site. This is the essence of basketball - there are things that are hard to predict, no matter how good the preparation is.

We are satisfied with our work if the game develops according to our plan. Teams in preparation try to anticipate some things the opponent will do based on the information they have.

6. Are there coaches in Europe that you look up to?

Naturally, this is Dimitris Itoudis.

I also really like the way Barcelona plays and the way Zalgiris played with Jasikevicius.

Sferopoulos has an interesting strategy.

Bartzokas' team play is a clear concept, it is clear what he wants from the players. He always sticks to his game model, and this model does not change depending on the opponent.

Pablo Laso and Ettore Messina are right there, definitely.

Personally, the ideas that the coach is trying to implement in the attack, or to put up such a defense that it is difficult for the opponent to outplay, are important to me. Some thoughts in the timeout that the coach suggests. Decisions that the coach makes in terms of squads or substitutions, use of players.

7. Europe has stable lineups, well-known coaches, well-known players… What is there to study in particular for a scout?

If it were that simple, it would be easy to play. A coach can use combinations of players in different ways - for example, he can release a small forward to the fourth position and gain mobility. This will create a problem for a team that does not have mobile fourth numbers.

Or another example, Zeljko Obradovic, while at Fenerbahce, drew two new interactions in every timeout. It was unrealistic for the opposing team to know what Fenerbahce would play when they entered the court. Two time-outs is four possessions, plus possibly an opponent time-out, plus the start of the quarter. And in just one quarter there are 24-25 possessions, that is, very often the opponent was not aware that the attack would play.

Or another example. Javi Pascual, working in Panathinaikos, in the matches with Fenerbahce put zone defense on these first two attacks after the timeout. It turned out that there was a new attack, but it did not work, because the idea was against personal defense.

It's moments like these that make the game interesting. Everyone knows what kind of players, everyone knows what kind of coach, but how they will act and what decisions the coach will make, that's the whole point.

9. What new trends are emerging in European basketball?

Trends are constantly emerging.

Granted, it has always been considered very difficult to stop two player interaction (pick and roll), but in recent years there has been more three player interaction when a back screen is added to the pick and roll. This is the so-called "Spanish pick-and-roll" - the situation is complicated by the fact that the defending players not only need to figure out how to interact together, but also a third player is involved, there are a lot of variables in such a situation. Who is responsible for whom is not always easy to figure out. Some teams are trying to introduce the interaction of three players in other situations - for example, clearances in the last seconds.

In addition, there are more isolations, more one-on-one play. Where before there was one strong player who could decide on his own when the interaction did not work, now teams like Villeurbanne have interactions built for one-on-one play. A special situation is created for the leader in order to use his strengths as effectively as possible.

10. The use of pick-and-roll is constantly increasing. Will this trend stay?

The development of basketball is not easy to predict. There are teams that are trying to get away from the pick and roll game.

Pick-and-roll is an offensive weapon that cannot be 100% stopped. Pick-n-roll appeared in the 70s in college basketball and at one point disappeared, no one paid attention to it, and then spread widely. Pick-n-roll is being studied very actively, but no one still knows how to deal with it.

I don't think he will leave at all. Perhaps it will become less. For example, in Barcelona, the pick-and-roll is only part of the attack, they have a lot of play from the post and from behind the screens.

11. How has the advent of statistics affected scouting and can numbers replace the scout?

Numbers cannot replace a scout. Statistics are only part of the picture that the coach and scout get in preparation for the game. You can understand trends from statistics, but you can’t see things that are visible when watching matches.

Analytical equipment, video filming, when the game is filmed from eight cameras, can theoretically replace the scout, but this requires more advanced technologies, artificial intelligence is needed that recognizes rather complex things.

12. Are there any statistics that you keep within the club?

Yes, we often need statistics that are not publicly available. For example, statistics on the effectiveness of some game actions that are important only for us. It's impossible to calculate this with regular statistics services, because no one knows what these actions are and how often they are played.

I know that Rick Pitino is very fond of counting the number of “touches on the defensive”, this is also a unique statistic that special people count.

13. Do scouts make mistakes?

Necessarily, no one works without mistakes. There is a so-called human factor.

When I was working in Samara, one part of my job was to create a playbook - the interactions that the opponent plays. And one of Bazarevich's assistants (Russell Bergman) showed the players these interactions. One was very complex and long - he said that he did not remember him. And then my turn came, I got up: “I remember everything, I’ll call it now.” I started calling, but it really was very long (it was we who were preparing for the game with Triumph), and at some point I realized that I had missed an important detail and then everything would go wrong. I had to stop and confess to the coach that I had made a mistake… Sergey Valeryanovich was in a good mood, it all came down to a joke, but I remember the moment for a long time.

14. Journalists say that basketball is a smart game. And what does it look like from the inside?

Like a game for smart people.

In basketball, you have to make decisions in a limited amount of time, in a limited space, with a large number of unknown factors. The player is under pressure from time, result, judges, fans, and all this must be taken into account when making a decision - to make, for example, a pass or a throw. It's complicated. This is a game under pressure where you need to think very quickly. I do not want to compare with other sports, but here, in addition to the fact that players have to move from one half to another, they have different roles in defense and attack. Here we must also add the knowledge that the players should have regarding a particular team, specific personalities, and you need to know all the opponent's players and understand how they will act and how the team generally operates.

If you add up all of the above and imagine that it is reflected in a single game moment, then, of course, basketball is a game for smart people.

15. What is the difference between club basketball and team basketball?

In club basketball, the coach has more time to prepare the team. Plus, the players spend more time together, it is easier for them to establish relationships.

The national team has more personalities, more stars, because the best players in the country are called there. It is more difficult to distribute roles in the national team, because there are too many good players, they all want to have a certain number of attacks, playing time. Here the job of the coach is to balance it all.

16. Which coach changed your understanding of basketball?

I would name Sergey Bazarevich and Dimitris Itoudis.

Also Ettore Messina - I saw a lot of his clinics live and on recordings, it all influenced the understanding of the game.

Basketball is interesting because each coach has his own view of the game. And he conveys his philosophy to the players. Let's say Messina has its own system - other coaches have their own, I have my own. When they share this, then certain details fit my philosophy, in my vision, I understand that it is really better to do this and it will be more effective.

Coaches are constantly learning from each other. In 2013, coaching clinics were held in Barcelona, where coaches from all over Europe came together, and the coaches said that by listening to each other, we learn some nuances, and by revealing the secrets, we begin to think how to play and more interesting, harder.

17. Everyone is worried about the lack of Russian coaches in the VTB League. Do you think they have some kind of global problem?

This is a very complex question that requires a long and detailed answer. I'm not ready for it right now.

18. What do you like about your job?

I generally like my work. It is difficult to single out something that I like more - probably, I like to watch the work of coaches at a high level, I like to watch top players, and being next to them is even more interesting.
