Football Playoff Pairings Revealed October 22 on IHSA TV Network; IHSA To Stream Pre & Post Shows on NFHS Network

Nine weeks of regular-season high school football action in Illinois gives way to the second season, as the 2022 IHSA Football Playoffs officially get underway on Saturday, October 22 with the revealing the playoff qualifiers and fields.

The IHSA Football Playoff Pairing Show, which will unveil the brackets and first round match-ups of all 256 playoff qualifiers across eight classes, will air live on statewide television via the IHSA’s new TV Network partnership with Weigel from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

“Pairings night is one of the great traditions for Illinois high school football. It is our privilege to highlight the accomplishments of teams around the state on live broadcast television,” said Steven Farber, Weigel Broadcasting Senior Vice President of Operations.

The TV show will air on the following stations and channels by market. Fans are encouraged to check local listings, or the station websites, for exact channel details. Football fans outside of these markets can tune-in to the NFHS Network at 7:30 PM and watch all three shows. An NFHS Network account is required, but there is no fee to watch. All of the shows will also be simulcast on IHSA.org.

IHSA TV veterans Dave Bernhard and Matt Rodewald will team-up to reveal and react to the first round matchups in what has become one of the most anticipated nights of the high school football season.

“October 22 has been circled on the calendars of high school football players, coaches and fans since August,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “We are excited to be partnering with Weigel on the annual playoff pairing show and are confident more fans in Illinois will be able to view it than ever before. We also appreciate the efforts of the NFHS Network on our streaming pre- and post-game shows that will only make this night bigger and better.”

One hour coverage just isn’t enough for one of the biggest nights on the IHSA calendar, so the IHSA and NFHS Network will once again be streaming a pre- and post-show.

The IHSA Playoff Pairing Preview Show and IHSA Playoff Pairing Breakdown Show will feature WRMJ’s Jim Taylor, Illinois prep football guru “Edgy” Tim O’Halloran of EdgyTim.com, and the state’s resident high school football bracketologist Steve Soucie of Friday Night Drive. The IHSA Playoff Pairing Preview Show will stream on the NFHS Network from 7:30 PM to 8:00 PM, before returning with the IHSA Playoff Pairing Breakdown Show on the NFHS Network from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Both NFHS Network streams can be viewed IHSA.org.

The trio of O’Halloran, Soucie and Taylor will highlight the top storylines of the night from 7:30 to 8:00 PM, hand the baton off to Bernhard and Rodewald for the TV broadcast, and then return from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM to react to the pairings.

Fans and teams are encouraged to use the hashtag #IHSAPairings throughout the evening on social media to interact with both shows, ask questions, and share pictures from team watch parties.

First Round IHSA Football Playoff games will unfold on Friday and Saturday, October 28-29, beginning the drive toward the State Championship games at Memorial Stadium on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana. The Fighting Illini, Visit Champaign County, and LegendsPlayHere.com will host the 2022 State Championship games on Friday, November 25 (1A-4A) and Saturday, November 26 (5A-8A).

September 22, 12 women's teams start the fight for the medals of the World Championship in Australia

women's teams, which will be held in Sydney, Australia from September 22 to October 1, will be the 19th in a row. More than half of the previous tournaments - 10 out of 18 - were won by the US team basketball players, who will be clear favorites this time as well. Note that the winner of the 2022 World Cup will receive a direct ticket to the Olympics, becoming the first team to qualify for the women's basketball tournament of the Paris 2024 Games.

12 teams will take part in the World Championship, which are divided into two groups at the preliminary stage.

Group A: Belgium, China, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Puerto Rico, Republic of Korea, USA.

Group B: France, Serbia, Japan, Mali, Canada, Australia.

Matches of the round robin tournaments in groups will be held from 22 to 27 September. The four best teams from each six go to the playoffs, where they will compete for medals according to the classical Olympic system: 29September quarter-finals will take place, September 30 - semi-finals, October 1 - the match for third place and the final.

The main contenders for gold medals are US basketball players, who have not only won ten such tournaments in the past, but also five of the previous six. Thus, in the 21st century, only once - in 2006 - the victory at the World Cup went not to the Americans, but to another team, which was then the Australian team. Team USA's roster for this tournament includes five Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions: Jewell Loyd , Ariel Atkins , Chelsea Gray , Aja Wilson and Brianna Stewart. The main rivals of the Americans at the preliminary stage in group A will most likely be the Belgian basketball players led by the magnificent Emma Meesseman . The remaining four teams from this six will most likely have to fight for the remaining two vacancies in the playoffs, and basketball players from China will be the favorites in it.

A much more even line-up has gathered in Group B, which will feature the hosts of the World Cup from the Australian team, as well as three of the four participants in the semi-finals of the Olympic tournament in Tokyo (that is, all but the US team) - Japan, France and Serbia. The sixth-placed Canadian team in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) rating will play in the same group, the leader of which is Natalie Achonwa . So in this six, a serious struggle will begin from the very first days of the group stage, as one of the five very strong teams will not even be able to get into the playoffs.

In the teams of this group, we also note the legend of Australian basketball, still remaining in the ranks - 41-year-old Lauren Jackson , who was the 2006 world champion, and won her first Olympic medal 22 years ago - it was the silver of the Games in the same Sydney, where the current World Cup will be held.

The main favorites for the European Basketball Championship starting on September 1 will be the teams of France, Serbia, Slovenia and Spain

(Photo © 2022 Getty Images)

countries - Germany, Italy, Georgia and the Czech Republic. 24 teams will take part in the tournament, which at the preliminary stage are divided into four groups of six teams.

Four winners from each group advance to the playoffs and then compete for medals according to the classic playoff system, starting from the 1/8 finals. The full schedule of matches of the European Championship 2022 can be viewed here .

For the first time in almost eight decades, the tournament will take place after a five-year break. From 1947 to 2017, the European Championships were held with strict frequency - once every two years. However, on the eve of the European Championship 2017, it was decided to change the entire international basketball calendar, and the interval between the EuroBaskets was supposed to be four years. But then the pandemic intervened, due to which the current tournament was postponed for another year, so the pause between the European Championships this time turned out to be completely unique in duration.

It is very difficult to name the favorites of the European Championship 2022, which confirms the completely unpredictable development of events in the European qualification of the upcoming World Championship in a year. It is unlikely that anyone could have imagined that the first of the Old World teams to travel to the 2023 World Cup will be won by the Finnish team, and in the group with Serbia, Greece and Turkey, the Latvian team will take a confident lead. So there will certainly be a lot of surprises at the upcoming EuroBasket.

Particular interest in the tournament is given by the participation in it of two, perhaps, the main stars of European basketball, playing overseas. The most valuable NBA player of the last two seasons will play for the Serbian national team - Nikola Jokic from Denver, and the leader of the Slovenian national team will be Luka Doncic representing Dallas. In the NBA, Jokic's status has been noticeably higher lately, but the Serbian center still does not have a single major international title in the national team - his best achievement for it is the silver of the 2016 Olympic Games. Doncic is the reigning European champion as part of the Slovenian team, which, largely thanks to his game, was able to get into the top four at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. So the dispute between the main basketball stars of Serbia and Slovenia promises to be very principled. Moreover, according to the tournament grid, they will definitely not meet before the quarterfinals, and at this stage, each match will already be in the spotlight.

Of course, the main favorites of the tournament include the best European team at the 2020 Olympics - France, which lost only 5 points to the US team in the final of the Games in Tokyo. Evan Fournier , Rudy Gobert , Thomas Ertel and their partners will certainly try to return to their country a title that Basketball France held only once in history.
